OOC and Set-Up

Hey! Feel free to talk about character creation and whatever else you'd like. This game is set in a world that I've been running games in for a couple of years now so if you'd like to get extra information on the relevant places and people then let me know and I can post it here or put a link to the World Anvil page.

Are we using standard point buy and standard array attribute options?
If you are variant human do you get two feats?
How much gold can we have to spend on normal equipment (like armor and weapons)?

Point buy and standard array are fine for stats. If you'd prefer to roll for stats I can make a thread that allows dice rolls.
Variant humans will get two feats.
You can take whatever armor and weapons you desire, as well as an equipment pack of your choice and 200 gold. The gold can either be spent on items or saved if you wish.

Could you tell us a bit about the guy we're working for?

Sure thing! Zharakh Daemonhammer is the Sorcerer-King of Khazat-Hal. He worships the demon lord Zaanatch, who is patron of intrigue, change, and sorcery. Like the other dwarven sorcerers of Khazat-Hal, he is afflicted with a curse that slowly turns him to stone. His arms and legs turned to stone decades ago. Zharakh commissioned an artificer to create an adamantine suit for him to wear which would act as a new set of arms and legs. Once it was complete, he had the petrified limbs removed so that he could fit into the magic suit.

Sounds like a perfectly reasonable and sensible chap.

Anyone have some thoughts on the character they wish to play? I was thinking a rogue or fighter (or a fighter/rogue). I like classes that keep it simple in combat so I tend to avoid spell lists. :)

No ideas yet on the actual race and persona, maybe something a little slick and oily to get in on the evil vibes. Maybe lackey of the sorcerer-king or something? Dunnow yet.

I don't have a strong character preference right now. I was also thinking rogue or fighter. I've played a lot of arcane spellcasters recently, so I'd like to avoid those. But if others have strong convictions about what they want to play, I'm more than happy to fill a gap in the party.

I've been itching to play a cold-blooded lizardfolk. Question for DM: would that be allowed? (using stats from Volo's Guide to Monsters)

Yep! Lizardfolk would definitely be fine

I have a couple of ideas:
One is Battlemaster Artificer, but he would likely be a damage dealer, so if others are planning on playing full-on DPS types, I might go with Circle of Stars Druid for a healer-ish type, or possibly Genie Warlock if a caster is needed. All three are subclasses I've wanted to try.

BTW, is multi-classing OK? I wasn't going to do anything crazy but a 1 or 2 level dip might be good for some write-ups.

So I'm leaning towards a Circle of Stars Druid which will make me a healer/caster, since I figure most people aren't going to want to be healers.

Are we using custom origins? (I.e.- moving stat bonuses for races around?). I was going to be a Luxodon, because.. you know.. Ganesh.. but if that's too wacky I'll go with something else. If we can move around stat bonuses, I might even go Tiefling for a demonic tie-in.

Ok, then. One of my lizardfolk ideas was a healer. If we have a healer now then I'll switch to my other concept: lizardfolk rogue/scout.

Either way you want to go.. I have other concepts also: warlock or perhaps battlesmith alchemist. All of them are in the middle of creation so I can do whatever.

I have made a character: lizardfolk rogue/scout. Great ability to move about the battlefield (Skirmisher feature + Mobile feat). Skills focused on being sneaky, aware, and surviving in the wilderness. Still need to decide on his magic item, but it will probably be a magical weapon of some kind. With all this said, I could be talked out of this character if everyone wants to play a rogue and we really need something else.

I think I'll go for a Kobold Fighter/Rogue to add to Scaly Squad!

Hi all late to the party. I have a character mostly ready to go but if you prefer I can reroll stats.

Since the game is about mpnster hunting. I went for a human ranger with leanings towards hunting

Missed chance to go Dragonborn and join Scaly Squad there...

We can draw scales on his face and make him an honorary member.

I wanted to be a Dragonborn but the stats are terrible for a WIS caster :)

Not optimal.. just kinda "functional". lol. Lizardfolk is actually very good for WIS caster, but I don't wanna be a copy-cat :)

Maybe your human has a little yuan-ti blood from a few generations back. Human stats, but also a few scales. ;)

Also, Clickclack is not his given name. He got the nickname from non-lizardfolk because of his habit of clicking his claws together when he is bored or impatient. He introduces himself as Clickclack now because it is more efficient than trying to get softskins to say his name correctly.

There is an amazing Chrome extension that converts from D&D Beyond to Gamer's Plane char sheet.

I have submit0my character. Though still somewhat incomplete...my device real does not like working with the character editor. I have some gear I meed to add. Adjust the info for spells. Also DM I two questions
1st my magic Item I would like to be my sword just a simple +X....what would you allpw the mod to be?
2nd I topk Tough as my feat. I get add +2 to my HP at each leveling. BUT ot states when I take the feat I get to double the HP gained at the level I took it at..since Sonce you gifted us a feat oh gracious DM how do you rule on applying that?

That is just poor wording of the feat. You simply get extra 2 HP for each level.
If you read carefully this is what it is saying.

And you'd get a +2 weapon.

For a sorcerer I'd not worry too much about defensive items and instead would just pick up a spell or two to protect yourself unless you insist on wading into melee for some reason. Same goes for War Caster. There are definitely builds that do that, but it's perfectly fine not to and instead hang back and do magic from there.

That would also free up your magic item. Forget all those min/max guides, pick something fun or thematic for your character. At the rare item level there are some cool staves, wands and wondrous items. Staves can really add to your theme (staff of spiders, charming, swarming insects) while wands allow you to spam spells (like the wand of fireballs). If you want to pick something stupendously powerful instead, you can pick something like the Helm of Teleportation.

it just that my AC 15 is really low...and if something attacks me I am doomed :P thats why the cloak gives

While you wear this cloak, it projects an illusion that makes you appear to be standing in a place near your actual location, causing any creature to have disadvantage on attack rolls against you. If you take damage, the property ceases to function until the start of your next turn. This property is suppressed while you are incapacitated, restrained, or otherwise unable to move.

About feat I am into Lucky...its common and easy to use :P

Or, in the case you do get attacked somehow, you cast Shield. Or you are already (Greater) Invisible. Or after being hit you Misty Step to safety. Or your are Flying so they can't reach you. You are the magicky-magick! Do the magick! :D

I happen to have the cloak. But do note the effect suppression is harsh if you have low AC; follow-up blows are then also likely to land. Instead, consider the Shield spell. You can reactively use it after seeing the attack roll to cancel it out, and it lasts until the next round keeping your AC pumped until then. Invisibility gives the same disadvantage as the cloak. And so on.

If you are concerned about AC, instead consider Ring of Spell Storing and fill it up with Shield spells at the end of the day. 5 Castings per day will probably do more for you then a cloak of displacement. Plus if you find you're not getting attacked all that much and don't need those spells, you can put other ones in it, drastically increasing your daily spell allotment.

You can pick whatever you like! Personally I would go for a something fun like a staff. But the ring is definitely a powerful item on a sorcerer that you will never regret having. Just look at what spells you use most in a day and wish you'd have more and boom, the ring solves that for you.

I decided on a good old fashioned +2 shortsword for Clickclack. So now he's done.

Erimeade is an average sized human male in his 40s. His long hair and beard are dark brown and is starting to show wisps of gray. His eyes are a steel blue and his face shows his age and time spent out of doors. His clothes are nothing to speak of plain, rain stained and patched. He has a gray cloak lined with fur about the neck. A sturdy leather wrapped hilted sword hangs comfortably on his hip. A well worn pack rides his back along with a quiver and a bow.

How do we proceed from here as players? Are we RPing the travel, or will we be cutting to another scene?

Assuming no one wants to do anything in the city, I'll do some encounter rolls and if there are any encounters we'll run through those. If there aren't any then we'll jump to the mountains

I'm actually stuck in Dublin right now because I tested positive for Covid so I can't get on a plane back to the US.

Make no mistake.. this Omicron is serious biz. I am vaccinated and had a booster in early December. Tested negative before boarding my first leg to Dublin. It's likely I contracted Covid while stuck in Paris airport for too long among the mass of people in security and immigration.

Just a heads up I am in line to be hit with a pretty big snow storm. I have a satelite internet and live really remotely I may be out of contact beginning some time tomorrow and it might be several days depending on the damage

My house (in the US) is on a large hill in Los Angeles.
I got an alert on my phone this morning of a "Tsunami Warning" (due to that volcano eruption in the Pacific) where I live.
That was pretty unexpected. However, if the water rose up to the level of my house there would be more serious issues.. like LA would have been destroyed.
