OOC:
A non-gameplay introduction thread to give folks an idea of the start of the campaign. Feel free to introduce your characters IC, what their role on Abzu's Bounty is, what their interests are and their day-to-day looks like, if they're establishing any relationships with their fellow crew members or keeping to themselves, etc.Life aboard the Abzu’s Bounty isn’t glamorous, but it’s also not the worst posting most of the crew have ever had. The Bounty is a colossal ice hauler, a refitted colony ship with a hollow cargo bay for capturing space ice, owned by the Earth-based Krystal Kleer Water Company. The current crew complement is 49, a fraction of what it could serve for bigger operations or in emergencies. The fact that a handful of the crew get their own small room is a luxury not always afforded in smaller, cramped vessels. The pool table installed in the mess is a popular feature, even if billiards in .3 G is its own unique game.
The crew is made up of a handful of Earthers, mostly long-time Krystal Kleer employees, with Belter labourers filling out the ranks. There are a couple of Martians, but they mostly keep that to themselves, especially these days. The ship is captained by a woman named Xin Reyes, a no-nonsense, by-the-book officer who dislikes surprises, captain of the Bounty for the past 8 years. A middle-aged woman of mixed Chinese and Latino heritage, she looks young for her age, but her small frame still packs a wallop. She’s put down a couple of squabbles easily enough, knocking people a foot taller than her on their ass when she needs to. Reyes is an Earther who’s kept her head down and assimilated into the Belt to make a modest living for herself. A "company woman" through and through, everyone knows she’s just counting down the days until she has enough to retire to someplace comfortable, probably on Ceres or Ganymede, still about a decade off. Captain Reyes is fair, and appreciates reliable workers, but like many people in her position she keeps a professional distance from the crew.
Her second is a thick-necked brute of a man named Mitchell, although most people just call him "XO". It’s pretty clear he has a combat background. Rumour has it he’s former station security on Eros, but was fired. Most people understand what that means and give him a wide berth. A couple of small tattoos identify him as OPA-sympathetic, if not affiliated. He keeps things running efficiently, so even if he occasionally crosses the line the captain overlooks anything that doesn’t cause her trouble.
There’s a few other crew members who seem closer to Reyes, by seniority aboard the ice hauler if nothing else. There’s Raisa Arnova, one of the Bounty’s pilots, a capable Earther who is always willing to drink her fellow crew members under the table in spite of her petite frame. Saveen Patel is the chief engineer, an older Belter who takes any chance to proudly remind people how his family helped settle Mars, even though he’s never been there himself. He’s also the galley’s unofficial cook, and is actually pretty good. People look forward to his meals, even if it means listening to him obsess about life in the Mariner Valley for a couple of hours. Kat Kowalski, one of the ship’s medics, is a Belter known for her discretion. Sweet and caring, she’s become an unofficial "confessor" to the crew, always willing to lend a sympathetic ear. Comms officer Gabriel Olivera is just attractive and sufficiently aware of it enough to be a shameless flirt, although the handsome Earther seems to enjoy the chase more than anything.
Normally, the day-to-day doesn’t change very much. Almost a week of acceleration matched with a week of deceleration to Saturn. Krystal Kleer runs a standard operation, three eight hour shifts, every role on the ship has three people. The survey crew coordinates with navigation, the mining crew cuts up and secures ice as it's captured in the hold, day in, day out.
This would be a normal three week run… if no one made the mistake of turning on the news.
Earth and Mars at each other’s necks, ships blowing up, and now an entire station gone dark, thousands upon thousands of voices on Eros suddenly quiet. There are people from Eros on the Bounty; the XO, the sanitation technician, a couple of the miners, the pilot kid. As the silence draws out they do what Belters do; mourn, keep their heads down and count their grievances. Propagated by social media, "Remember the Cant," has become a secret mantra between Belters and anyone sympathetic to their plight aboard the ice hauler.
Still, the Bounty is ahead of schedule. The haul’s been running smoothly, there’s a modest bonus in it for everyone barring any delays…
