Armageddon: The End Times, Second Edition

"Let those curse it who curse the day, who are prepared to rouse Leviathan."..........................................................................................................................-- Job 3:8

Armageddon is a roleplaying game first published by Myrmidon Press in 1997. The second edition was published by Eden Studios, Inc. in 2003. One can think of the setting as a mash up of Delta Green, World War Cthulhu, Scion, In Nomine, and Twilight 2000.

The premise is as follows: One night in 2008, a mysterious figure known as the "Dark Apostle" rises in Europe. To the world's shock, he demonstrates evidence of possessing supernatural abilities. With unprecedented swiftness, an entire extremist religion forms around the self-professed prophet. This so-called "Church of Revelations" begins aggressively working to convert the rest of the world to the worship of its deity, Leviathan, of which the Dark Apostle is a herald. Leviathan is a sanity-breaking being from outside our reality; a Lovecraftian cosmic horror bent on remaking our Universe in its twisted image. The Church's military arm, the "Army of Revelations," fights to turn everyone into believers. Those that refuse to convert are killed. Along with fanatical cultist-soldiers, the Army of Revelations boasts mystical powers and inhuman creatures that defy explanation: walking corpses and tentacled monstrosities that could only come from nightmares. Those who worship Leviathan deeply enough display strange mutations and grotesque deformities.

So great is the threat represented by Leviathan that beings of myth and legend begin revealing themselves to the world, en masse, to aid in the fight for survival. Humanity collectively reels as it confirms the existence of angels, demons, vampires, and other creatures long overlooked by science. Secret cabals of sorcerers and ancient lodges of immortals offer their services to the nations of Earth, while pagan gods and their demi-human children walk the planet once more to take up arms. Faced with an enemy that could destroy everyone and everything in existence, even the forces of Heaven and Hell agree to an uneasy truce in order to prevent the planet from falling to the Revelationists. The militaries of Earth and these disparate supernatural factions make for a formidable but rocky alliance, marred by old rivalries, personal agendas, and constant infighting. Soldiers adapt to the new realities of magic and monsters on the battlefield.

The year is now 2022, and the world is embroiled in an apocalyptic war of biblical proportions. It's effectively World War Three - the forces of Leviathan battling what remains of the Earth's free nations. The Church of Revelations currently controls Central America, most of Europe and South America, a third of Asia, and half of the Middle East. These conquered areas have robust resistance movements, but these homegrown bands of rebels are drastically outclassed. Only most of North America, Asia, and Australia, as well a few isolated parts of South America and Europe (including Great Britain and Scandinavia) remain free from the invaders. At least for now. The United States is holding out, but the Army of Revelations is constantly hammering at the southern border and threatening to spill into Texas.

If the Church of Revelations wins, Leviathan will be able to fully manifest on Earth and all is lost. The stakes have never been higher. The End Times are here.

What Can I Play?

The game has a large assortment of options for players. In this setting, humans have access to many different kinds of metaphysical abilities - magic spells, psychic powers, occult relics, divine miracles, and much more. On the non-human end, there are angels, demons, vampires, werewolves, immortals, pagan demi-gods, and many other types of supernatural creatures. If the supernatural options don't quite pique your interest, then you can always take on the role of a mundane human soldier or resistance fighter relying on your skills and military firepower. The choice is yours.

Here are just a few possible concepts that one could explore in Armageddon:

● A U.S. Army special forces operative who specializes in raiding the temples of Leviathan, and he is slowly losing his mind as a result.

● A ritual magician who contributes to the war effort by providing arcane support to military units on the front lines.

● A psychic who astrally travels the Land of Dreams in order to protect sleeping minds from invasion by Leviathan.

● A Catholic priest who can, very literally, perform God-given miracles. He can heal the sick with a prayer and call upon the wrath of the Lord to smite the wicked.

● A trenchcoat-clad Lesser Seraphim who hunts down Leviathan's cultists and turns them into pillars of salt. If that doesn't work, then shotguns.

● A demon who wears that face of a business magnate and fights Leviathan by seducing its followers into selling him their souls.

● A half-human child of a certain Norse God, who is capable of wielding the elemental forces of thunder and lightning with the same ease as her famous father.

● An ageless immortal alchemist haunted by vague memories of an ancient civilization that he believes is legendary Atlantis.

Interesting pitch. Looks like an interesting mashup of Twilight 2K, In Nomine, Scion and Delta Green. I'd be interested in a spot though I can't remember if I've ever played Unisystem before.

Played some Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel RPG back in the day. And once a short 5 session campaign of All Flesh Must be Eaten, so I have some experience with the system (though I haven't looked at any of it the last 10 years). Would love to try this out though.

I have also played Buffy and AFMBE long ago; the system for Armageddon is definitely closer to the latter. It’s too bad Eden Studios doesn’t produce much any more. The company’s site has been inactive for years.

That’s definitely an apt description of the setting, for sure. Think I’m gonna use that

Definitely interested, though I have no knowledge of the system, or any similar ones unfortunately.

It's a simple enough system. Unisystem is not terribly crunchy, so you can easily learn it as you go. I'll also try to write up a brief reference for the rules.

Since that's four people, I'll start putting something together while I wait for any other potentially interested parties.

I'd like to give this game a try. I am marginally familiar with some Eden games' systems but have never actually gotten to play in any of them.

Would be interested in playing Thorsdottir

The immortal alchemist sounds very intriguing as well and could easily be Tyr.
