Into the Woods

You’ve been summoned to meet with Lord Dagult Neveremember of Neverwinter. He meets with you in his home in the city, a handsome and well made house that speaks of success and wealth. A servant leads you into a well lit, expensively decorated sitting room. A tall broad shouldered man with pumpkin-brown hair and deep set dark eyes stands before you, drinking from a goblet of wine. He wears fine cut clothes of blue and silver, and regards each of you with a steady gaze before addressing you all.

"Hail and well met adventurers." he says. "I'm Dagult Neveremember. I’ve called you here to help me deal with a serious problem. I’ll get right to it. A group of hill giants have been attacking villages and settlements in and around Neverwinter Wood. A scout I hired tracked them to their lair in the forest, but they’re too powerful for her to deal with alone. I’d like you to attack them at their steading and end this threat to the countryside. I’ll pay you 1,000 gold pieces each. What say you?"

Scar being a man of money and such asks, Hmmm. About how many such giants do you think there for that 1000gp.

Neveremember smiles charmingly. "My scout has observed a dozen or so coming in and out of the steading, sometimes accompanied by ogres or orcs." He looks at each of you again. "You all are warriors of renown, or in a couple of cases infamy. That's why I summoned each of you here. I'm sure you're up to the task."

Well, I do have a score or so to settle with those giants and some gold to boot sounds fine. I'm good for some giant killing. says Scar the known smuggler. Also known to have brutally dismembered a double crosser. He has a history of violence but also someone that never crosses those he works with.

Sunosha sat, still as ever, listening to the offered job. Hill giants attacking settlements. Not exactly out of the ordinary, but definitely worrisome. she thought to herself, her mind calling back to a campaign early in her time with the Tumult. Attacking giants of any kind in their strongholds was a dicey move, but with competent enough adventurers it was doable.

Have you sent anyone else to attempt this yet? she asks Lord Neveremember, as she leans back into her chair, running her hand over the short spiked hair over mohawk. I'm curious if we know anything of their fortifications.

Neveremember's smile grows just the tiniest bit strained. "As I've said, I've sent a scout. But she alone isn't enough to solve this. Her name is Mira, and if you take the job I'll have her guide to the steading, and she can tell you all she knows."

"Giants." Asa clicks her tongue. "Very dangerous foes, though hill giants are less so. Still, a steading of giants? A dangerous mission indeed." She seems to suddenly notice that there are others in the room with her. "Oh, I will take the assignment. I can use the money. "

Zagreus listens to the man with an obviously unpleasant attitude. Giants, huh? he thinks. Why would they attack people? He turns to the Neveremember and says "Are there any cases similar in the past? Why would they start attacking people in a sudden? Also, you must think killing giants is an easy job if you offer ony 1000 gold pieces for a hoard of them plus ogres and orcs." Zagreus didn't care about the money much, he just wanted to see what kind of a man this Neveremember was. He wondered how would he react to such a response.

Neveremember's smile fades a little. "Surely you jest. Giants are well known for attacking travelers and settlements. As far as the fee, I think this is a reasonable amount, certainly enough to meet your needs for quite some time."
Feb 18, 2022 11:48 am
"Well, what are we waiting then?" he turns to the people who were talking with Neveremember. He turns back on the man and asks "When can we meet with this scout, provided everybody is okay with taking task?"

Gale studies a shelf in the office. It holds a beautiful golden challis. His finger follows its rim and finds the crack. I thought that the Blackstaff promised to mend this after he dropped it? He must have been at a gathering in Neveremember's estate where a party accident had happened.

He is almost elven looking, with pointy ears and almond-shaped eyes, but there the similarities end. He is blue-skinned, with blue markings. His hair is very light and almost white. There seems to be a wind current playing with it always.

He turns to Lord Neveremember. Thank you for recognising our skills for their own. What means are we to use to deal with the giants? If they can be bartered with, how much are the city willing to trade? Do you have an aid I can contact to get the particulars if this becomes relevant?

"I had not thought to treat with these monsters." Neveremember turns to Annastellar. "Much of my wealth is currently tied up in rebuilding the city, but if you find they're willing to bargain send Mira back with the details."

And he looks back to Zagreus. "Mira waits for you just outside my villa. She's ready to leave now if you are."

Zagreus turns to the group. His eagerness is already visible from his face. For those who have been around him, this looks implies that his mind is set. The mission is taken and for the remaining time he will not stop until those giants are dealt with. He stands up, in the mean time asking the group "When will everybody be ready to embark?"

Atgørvimaðr Jötnarblóð is a massive man. So much so that he had to duck through every door of Lord Neveremember's abode. He had first looked at the building and thought it a massive festhall. Once inside and treated to the wealth within he thought whatever southerner must call this place his home must be as powerful and greedy as a dragon to amass such a hoard. He knew southerners did things differently. Thus he was not surprised this chieftain of the southerners did not look like a warrior.

That everyone was allowed to sit on a throne was another odd southerner thing. Still, Atgørvimaðr did not complain. He sat and resisted the idea of putting his boots on the table. He did take his great horned helmet off and placed it in front of him, letting his long blonde hair flow free. Atgørvimaðr was considered handsome among his people. A face hard as stone, muscles like stone, eyes hard as stone and fists like stone made him a great warrior. Mighty were his deeds, enough to wipe out the shame of his birth. Now he had come south. Hunting giants was the life he lived, and he did so with relish. So when the soft little girl spoke of bartering with them he laughed.

"BWOHAHAHAH! Trade? With giants? The only thing they understand is trading blows!"

His voice was of the Frozern North, one of a savage man from a savage land. The Uthgardt turned to the southerner chieftain.
"Worry not! Once we return it shall be wet by the blood of your enemies, chieftain of southerners. Keep your word to Atgørvimaðr Jötnarblóð, ja? Shower me in gold, and I shall bring you their skulls to mount on your walls so these beasts know to stay away from your lands!"

A thousand gold pieces. Did this southerner have any idea that his entire tribe did not make such wealth in ten years? Perhaps. It just meant he was too rich to care..

With that Lord Neveremember considers the deal done and summons his servant to lead you back out again.

Waiting for you on the street is a young half-elf woman in dusty leathers, with long dark hair, carrying a longbow.

"Hail. I'm Mira. I'm to lead you to the giant stedding. Are you ready to depart?"
Feb 18, 2022 4:51 pm
Considering his food store Scar asks, How many days of travel to the giants?
Feb 18, 2022 4:59 pm
"I Cannot speak for my companions, but I am prepared." Asa nods.
Feb 18, 2022 8:06 pm
Likely as ready as I will be, unless there are some weird weather considerations deep in the woods. Sunosha says with a grin. So long as we have a bit of time before we set camp each night, I can make sure we have a nice safe place to sleep.

Thinking back on the meeting, she smiled at the very "wild man of the north" attitude of this Atgørvimaðr. He reminded her of her clansfolk in many ways. It was going to be interesting to fight alongside him.

Mira looks at Scar. "The stedding is four days walk into the woods. I set up a base camp a day from it that you can fall back to if you’re careful you’re not followed."
Feb 18, 2022 10:12 pm
Then we better get started. This way gentlemen. Gale turns and leaves the office. He walks assuredly as if he has been in this house before.
