Character creation and worldbuilding

Welcome! I chose your four characters out of those presented because they seemed to tie together well, but also provide contrast, particularly in their relationship to the divine. A paladin, devoted servant of a higher power; a monk, enlightened through perfection of the self; a druid, empowered by the natural world; and a sorcerer who sees herself as a god. That seems like a group that can find commonality in their spiritual outlook on life but also challenge each other's core beliefs.

(If you're having second thoughts about your character and would like to play something else, that's okay! Happy to talk about other options.)

The background to the campaign is essentially as discussed in the thread: Once upon a time there were five young adventurers who met in a tavern, formed a party, delved dungeons, fought dragons, and achieved wealth, fame and success. You bonded together through the formative years of your lives, overcame great hardship and peril as a result of that bond, and then slowly drifted apart as your non-adventuring responsibilities grew.

(Yes, five. The fifth member of your party was a wizard called Theobald, now the world's greatest archmage.)

As far as character creation, you're welcome to use whatever (official) sources will best let you realise the character you had in mind. In particular, I'd recommend the options in Tasha's around customising your origin, so you can play any race without worrying about getting the right ASIs (the Custom Lineage is also a fine way to go).

Don't bother with a Background though, unless you desperately want to: instead, just gain two Skill Proficiencies and two Tool and/or Language proficiencies of your choice. Your Background is essentially "Legendary Hero", and the associated Feature is that people will treat you as such.

Equipment-wise, you can have any mundane equipment that you want, without limit. You can also select up to three uncommon, two rare, and one very rare magic item.

I'll also ask that you help me out with a bit of worldbuilding related to your character. Primarily, what organisation(s) are you connected to, what is their purpose, and what kind of resources are at their disposal?

Also, feel free to discuss ideas about specific heroic feats that you performed together in your adventuring days. This is more or less a Greyhawk-style fantasy world. Ask about anything you need to know, and I'll do my best to provide!

I think we should spend at least a week on this, and we'll see if we need more time at that point.

Chose the following Magic Items

Magic Items

Boomarang
Notes
You have a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.

The boomerang is a ranged weapon, and any creature proficient with the javelin is also proficient with this weapon.
On a miss, a boomerang returns to the thrower's hand.
Paper Bird
Notes
After you write a message of fifty words or fewer on this magic sheet of parchment and speak a creature’s name, the parchment magically folds into a Tiny paper bird and flies to the recipient whose name you uttered. The recipient must be on the same plane of existence as you, otherwise the bird turns into ash as it takes flight.
The bird is an object that has 1 hit point, an Armor Class of 13, a flying speed of 60 feet, a Dexterity of 16 (+3), and a score of 1 (−5) in all other abilities, and it is immune to poison and psychic damage.
It travels to within 5 feet of its intended recipient by the most direct route, whereupon it turns into a nonmagical and inanimate sheet of parchment that can be unfolded only by the intended recipient. If the bird’s hit points or speed is reduced to 0 or if it is otherwise immobilized, it turns into ash.
Paper birds usually come in small, flat boxes containing 1d6 + 3 sheets of the parchment.
Winged Boots
Notes
While you wear these boots, you have a flying speed equal to your walking speed. You can use the boots to fly for up to 4 hours, all at once or in several shorter flights, each one using a minimum of 1 minute from the duration. If you are flying when the duration expires, you descend at a rate of 30 feet per round until you land.
The boots regain 2 hours of flying capability for every 12 hours they aren't in use.
Amulet of Health
Notes
Your Constitution score is 19 while you wear this amulet. It has no effect on you if your Constitution is already 19 or higher without it.
Actual Con: 12
Bracers of Defense
Notes
While wearing these bracers, you gain a +2 bonus to AC if you are wearing no armor and using no shield.
Dragon Vessel Wakened
Notes
This vessel can be a potion bottle, drinking horn, or other container meant to hold a liquid.

Slumbering (Uncommon). As a bonus action, if the vessel is empty, you can speak the command word to fill the vessel with one of the following (your choice): ale, olive oil, a potion of healing, or a potion of climbing. Once this property is used, it can’t be used until the next dawn. A potion you create in this way loses its magical properties if it isn’t imbibed within 24 hours.

Stirring (Rare). In addition to the options for a Slumbering vessel, you can fill a Stirring vessel with mead, a potion of fire breath, or a potion of healing (greater).

Wakened (Very Rare). In addition to the options for a Slumbering or Stirring vessel, you can fill a Wakened vessel with wine, a potion of flying, or a potion of healing (superior).

Creatable Potions

Potion of Climbing
Notes
Potion, common
When you drink this potion, you gain a climbing speed equal to your walking speed for 1 hour. During this time, you have advantage on Strength (Athletics) checks you make to climb. The potion is separated into brown, silver, and gray layers resembling bands of stone. Shaking the bottle fails to mix the colors.
Potion of Fire Breath
Notes
Potion, uncommon
After drinking this potion, you can use a bonus action to exhale fire at a target within 30 feet of you. The target must make a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw, taking 4d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. The effect ends after you exhale the fire three times or when 1 hour has passed.
This potion's orange liquid flickers, and smoke fills the top of the container and wafts out whenever it is opened.
Potion of Flying
Notes
Potion, very rare
When you drink this potion, you gain a flying speed equal to your walking speed for 1 hour and can hover. If you're in the air when the potion wears off, you fall unless you have some other means of staying aloft. This potion's clear liquid floats at the top of its container and has cloudy white impurities drifting in it.
Potion of Healing (Superior)
Notes
Potion, rare
You regain 8d4 + 8 hit points when you drink this potion. The potion's red liquid glimmers when agitated.

I am not familiar with Greyhawk and "Greyhawk-style fantasy world" say exactly nothing to me
To decide what druidic or druid-led organisation goals are I would need to know what are threats to the wild life, ecology and world as a whole. Does countless evil dragons exist in the world only concerned about wealth? Is it full of undead and aberrations, or they are only seldom summoned by greedy humans hunger for power? Would druids need to prevent civilization from encroaching on rare animal habitats?
Also - what are the planes of existence? At LVL 20 traveling between planes is super easy. Does our world have to constantly repeal demon invasions, underworld interruption, etc. ?

P.S. In any case I'm rather flexible to both Organisations and the deeds we performed together. I would only want to stick druid of the chosen subclass as I feel it would be most appropriate

For ages, sages have debated whether Bahamut actually was a deity or not. Many believed he was the archetype of good dragonkind, the avatar of another deity, or even a mortal dragon so powerful that other dragons revered him like a god. Avaris of course never cared for such things, weather o not he was a god he was who Avaris followed

Temples to Bahamut are extremely rare, and it is possible that the one Avaris built is one of maybe three. Because the Platinum Dragon didn't appreciate being honored by objects, taking into account deeds instead. The few temples that were made to honor him were beautiful and elegant buildings with simple furniture and no embellishment or adornment. Those temples had meeting rooms where followers could gather, and a few smaller rooms where individuals could pray, meditate, or rest in privacy.
Avaris's Temple was special because it was highly practical with no Ornate qualities about it at all, for a time Avaris even preformed works for Bahamut Inside the temple but when he learned people thought him a god he stopped.

Members of the Temple Seeking Bahamut's Devine grace follow these Tenants:

Justice and Good above all.
Honor and Fealty to the King of Dragons.
Honor and Respect to Righteous Innocence.
Honor and Protection to the Lesser Races.
Honor and Correction to the Enemies of Justice and Good.
Honor and Acceptance of oneself.

Hi all.
Thanks for the invite!!

I will be playing Altea, an Elven Divine Soul sorceresss with indeed a bit of a divinity complex.

I am also not too familiar with Greyhawk itself, though I do understand the feeling that should go with it.

The seeming religious group we have going on (agreed with Kadeton, that is very interesting!).

The main organisation Altea would be connected to is of course the Temple to Altea. Yes, that is right, she has her own temple. She isn't the high priest of the temple, nope she is the diety being worshipped there (her clerics don't seem to get magic though).

Basically, it would be a magnificent temple raised in worship to Altea, the self-proclaimed daughter to one of the gods. From this place of worship, Altea generally tries to do good to the world around her. The temple also doubles as orphanage and a school. The temple is at the coast.

Greyhawk is just the "default" generic fantasy world of D&D. Technologically medieval, politically feudal. Monsters like dragons lurk in the dark corners of the world, but are rare. The planes are the standard D&D cosmology (including the Feywild, Shadowfell, Astral, Elemental and Outer planes and the Far Realm), though I'd prefer to omit Sigil and the Outlands because this isn't intended as a plane-hopping game. Extraplanar creatures tend not to visit the Material plane unless summoned to a particular task by magic. Undead are deliberately created for a necromancer's purposes, at least originally. Anything that exists in the Monster Manual can be found here somewhere.

Let me flip your question around: what threats to wildlife, ecology and the world as a whole are you interested in as the focus of your druidic circle? I'd like to give you all the opportunity to shape the world within your spheres of influence, and I'll fill in the gaps from there. That includes contradicting anything I've said above - if you decide that your circle was created specifically to fight against demonic invasions, then those invasions will be something that happens frequently enough to justify the circle's existence.

Thanks again for the invite! I'll get right on character creation. I'm familiar with the Greyhawk setting, so I'll be able to set up my paladin to have defended against the drow / elder elemental evil plot, or maybe something vs Iuz. If we were missing a wizard I might've offered to play one instead, but I'm happy to see we got that covered.

Looking forward to this, and to gaming with the other 3 players. I see we're rolling for stats, so let's go!

I have an idea about world settings and druid involvement - idea that would make sense without adjusting the "default" generic fantasy world described above. Not sure if it is fun though, may want to break "balance of "default" world to give druids more interesting problem to solve
[ +- ] Wizard issue
What started as wild fire distinguishing organisation involving peasant, woodman, woodcutter and other lower class citizens grew into druid led organisations who declared their independence from feudal lords but unlike Robin the hood brotherhood they did not care for people and did not rob nobles, they still took care of fire distinguishing and capturing/curing/returning to normal life those mad and escaped wizard apprentices.
Nowadays those druid circles even maintain communication with lords who end them their failed wizards otherwise cooperate to prevent magic usage going out of control. Those druids are some form 112 in the medieval environment.

I did some serious going through spells and feats list (equipment still to do).

Setting up a character at level 20 from nothing is not easy.
... to wish or not to wish... wish I knew :)

Taking a custom lineage elf. Going for the small sized elf. Never into those very tall high elves :)

As a bit more on the world and the characters, religion is a big thing in it. Are we going to steal gods from other realms? I noticed Bahamut already being a part of it. I am looking for a religion like Pelor or Lathander or maybe Pallas Athena, if going into true mythology, basically, which would be the basics of Altea's claimed origin. Also looking at tradtional elven gods.

Also, what the view on equipment/magic items and extra spells in the spellbook (ritual casting feat)?
Edit: guess I found the most logical answer https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items/spell-scroll

Svan Derh, interestingly, for Greyhawk, there's a god of magic, Boccob the Uncaring, who might not be too bothered if Altea made up her own magic-focussed religion. Whereas a deity like Pelor is more akin to a classic sun-god, or god of light type. Corellon Larethian, the head of the elven pantheon, is also a good bet, being also a god of magic. Just my two cents since I'm reasonably familiar with the setting lore.
Mar 3, 2022 2:46 pm
Oh right, I need to also roll stats and think about feats, no just the world :)
But I will be choosing race only after world building. I feel like Vedalken race description reflect the role-play aspects I'm looking into as it would allow my Druid PC to act in desire to seek perfection rather than wealth or power. But probably a more aggressive race would be more appropriate.

Did some reading. Corellon sounds good. Thanks for the sufgestion Bedzonell.

So Altea is a selfproclaimed daughter of Corellon. The temple, however, is that of a small cult that follows her.

That would be the main organisation connected to her. I can imagine that she was involved is some very impressive heroic deed to gain such status. Defeating a vampire lord or big dragon.

Don't worry too much about fitting in with established Greyhawk history - feel free to draw inspiration or take elements wholesale from there if you want to, but otherwise it can be safely ignored. :)

I love this, especially the "fighting fire with fire" aspect of them being Wildfire Druids, and the restrained and thoughtful use of a spiritual fire magic tradition in contrast to the reckless and destructive use of an intellectual fire magic tradition. The prevalence of fire magic in historical warfare might also have subtler persistent effects, like fortifications being made without any wooden components, and therefore a tendency towards much more long-term stability of small fiefdoms with well-established borders. Great suggestion!

Feel free to take Wish if you wish! I'm not the type to play "gotcha" with twisted interpretations of precise wording. And it's otherwise just a really flexible way to cast any 8th-level or lower spell that you need in the moment.

Steal any gods you want. Gods can have many names and faces, so where there's overlap they might be different gods or aspects of the same god. I'm more than happy for Altea to consider herself a daughter of Corellon Larethian; depending on who you interact with, they may recognise Corellon by other names.

Yep, grabbing scrolls as your magic item choices is the simplest way to do this. Note that "common" magic items are unlimited, so you can collect every ritual at those levels if you like.

This is a great prompt - let's have everyone in the party be best known for the same impressive heroic deed, each with their own role to play. A big dragon is a classic and fits well with Avaris' concept as well, is everyone happy with that or are there other suggestions?

Yeah, I am taking it. But only to copy spells. No way I am going to risk a 1/3 chance to no longer cast 1 of my 15 main spells.
It will basically by my 1/day spell wildcard :)

Yes, killing evil dragon would be a great deed especially it is fire-breathing. I would prefer brass or green, but fine with any evil one. Could we please agree on that dragon color? I would like to pick my very rare item Dragon Scale Mail made of that particular dragon skin.

Also I've decided that my PC will be a human, a simple human (not variant) to fit the background. Will finalise character during weekend

With the final vanquishing of the ancient gargantuan dragon Scrallimenaxian (just a placeholder name, please pick a better one), thus ensuring the safety of the great kingdom of Nyrond, the companions, now proclaimed heroes of the realm, found themselves finally able to retire to their own pursuits. For some though, their life's purpose consisted of unending commitment and sacrifice to the greater good. Sir Crivelln of Hommlet, Knight-Errant of the Order of Heironeous, found further purpose, not in retirement, but in doing what he did singularly, which was to continue to defend the known realms, this time against the shadowy forces of the other planes. Garrisoning himself at the ruined moathouse outlying the infamous Temple of Elemental Evil, he rebuilt the keep in order to serve as a staging point for his incursions into the realms of the Elder Elemental God, in order to hold the forces of darkness at bay. Now the territory of Hommlet and its surrounding environs stood as a bastion against the demonic armies of Iuz to the north, and supported the good kingdoms of Furyondy and Veluna adjacent. But Crivelln kept his watchtower focussed on the unholy temple, with its deepest most levels yet unrevealed. There were yet other rumours across Oerth which hinted at other invasions, notably the giant troubles in the southwest, but nothing pressing enough to cause Crivelln to abandon his strategic position near the centre of the lands of weal. He was after all but one man, even with the contingents he had gathered around him to be activated at a moment's notice, and the years of battle had not been too kind to him. But so long as evil did not rest, neither would he.

I am fine with any dragon color. But I agree it should have been evil, viscious and known for a long reign of terror.
Mar 4, 2022 3:18 pm
I think red makes the most sense, if we're to assume this dragon is a basic dragon but I think that we took on something with more personality prehaps a red dragon that had allied it's self with the elements to become a Volcanic Dragon whoever this dragons descendants are though Avaris while not killing them has tried to help them grow up without resorting to evil.
Mar 4, 2022 3:37 pm
I love the volcanic dragon! May I suggest a volcanic island near the mainland where said dragon had its lair?
