The Calamity

Mar 15, 2022 9:25 am
Crivelln looked out over the battlements of his keep, maintaining his eternal vigil over the twisted spires of the Temple of Elemental Evil. The dark edifice maintained its sinister aspect, but it had been quiet of late.

The stones of the keep shuddered, conveying to his fingertips a vast shock from deep within the earth on which it stood. Instantly his hand went to the hilt of his greatsword, alert for any danger, but the disturbance vanished as suddenly as it had come. The Temple stood unchanged.

Moments later, a breathless Knight-Captain joined him on the battlements. "Lord Commander, we're mustering our defences. Is it... do we know the cause?"

Crivelln shook his head grimly. "Nothing obvious. Yet."

From the darkening sky, a pale white dove descended to alight on the battlements. It ruffled its feathers with a strange sound - the rustling of paper, which Crivelln could now see that it was constructed from. It walked a few steps toward him, stretched its wings, and... unfolded itself, the intricate pleats and creases vanishing from its form until it lay as a flat sheet of white paper with words scribed in black ink. Crivelln caught it before it blew away in the chill wind. His own name was written at the top, in a familiar hand.

Silvanus stayed silent while the High Druids argued, showing no sign of supporting one side or the other. This was one of the more tedious aspects of these annual gatherings - banal matters of policy, funding allocation, the squabbles of those aligned in purpose but divided in approach. It wasn't truly necessary for the Arch-Druid himself to attend the discussions, but he felt it was important, both to keep himself informed and to provide final arbitration should the Circle be too evenly split to find resolution. Still, not all the details were essential, and he allowed his mind to wander as he stared into the Eternal Flame that illuminated their council.

The magical flame guttered, and for an instant it vanished entirely. Though it roared back to life in the span of a heartbeat, Silvanus was shaken. No mere movement of air could extinguish it; this was an ill omen indeed.

An oak leaf landed on the table in front of him. He barely noticed it amid the sudden silence as the druids waited, pondering what the flickering flame could portend. Then it began to move of its own accord, and suddenly had his full attention. It unfolded into a sheet of deep green paper with writing that looked to have been scorched into its surface.

---

Altea finished her sermon, the echoes of her clear voice ringing through the temple. The congregation of worshippers were hushed, staring up at her - most had tears in their eyes, a mixture of joy at being in her presence and sorrow that the sharing of her divine wisdom was concluded. She could read their faces, their emotions, so clearly... but could she truly sense their inner thoughts, their deepest fears and desires, as a goddess ought? She told herself that she could, and indeed, she truly believed it.

As she turned over the final page of her speech, she found an extra sheet of paper which she was certain hadn't been there when she began. She picked it up curiously, watching the words - which seemed to be written in gold leaf - catch the light. Her audience remained deathly silent, unsure of what was happening but grateful for a few moments more of her glory.

---

Avaris sat in a deep trance, his consciousness expanding in contemplation of the universe and its mysteries. It was a pure and perfect calm - the dissolution of self as he subsumed into all of Creation.

But like the shadow of a vast and deadly predator beneath the surface of a pristine lake, something moved with barely a ripple disturbing the tranquility - some Calamity, rushing swiftly toward Becoming. He barely had time to comprehend it before it became manifest, a terrible wrongness wrenching at the heart of everything. He cried out and fell as if struck, his meditation broken, a terrible fear coiling in his chest.

As he lay, trying to focus on his breathing as Master Fleeple had taught him so many years ago, an exquisite origami butterfly fluttered into his chamber and unfolded itself into his hand.

Theo! seeing that name is enough to snap Avaris out of his trance, my dear friend he had seen from many politicians and others trying to win his support, but never did anyone mention the name of the others, and certainly not while signing off, this was not some man trying to make his way in the world by standing atop others shoulders this was someone one of the very few people in the world Avaris had actually cared about, sure he cared about everyone but that was why sometimes he would put his life before the lives of others, it was calculated, if I die there I can no longer do good, he had risked his life not once but twice for Theo though and at least as many times for the rest of the group, he reached over to the wall beside him and pulled on a rope, he was barely ever disturbed but this was to ensure that he wouldn't be disturbed at all, then he began to read.
'death is natural...' he tried to tell himself but he had died once and with him some part of him had died even when he was brought back, memories prehaps he wasn't sure all he knew was that the other told him he'd changed. he made a quick count of how many years had passed, 'No' he breathed out the word silently but projected the thought to the rooms beyond, 'he shouldn't have died yet' wherever he died we could go there and... Beyond hope of resurrection those words scared him he knew what that looked like, in there last fight they we're painfully aware of the fact that we're any of them to die about that lava it would be a permanent death, but even that they had found a way around it after the battle, the tower... these messages... of course he would be in the tower but the these messages that meant he contacted all of them.

He grabbed the dragon vial, one of the few possessions he'd chosen to keep on him, why? He supposed it was because it allowed flight, and flight had become something he felt starved without every night he would fly through the air but those flights rarely lasted longer than a few minutes, he needed a longer stretch of flight at the moment, pouring the potion that came out of the vial directly into his mouth, taking his boomerang from the shelf where it now lived and strapping on his boots he was startled to see High Priest Elavin Moodshadow standing behind him, "I heard your cry" was all she said but so much more that that was clear she was shaking something that frightened Avaris was bound to be dangerous, "I just received a call from my friends," he said somewhat stiffly "I'm setting out Immediately."

With that Avaris stepped forward and like the bird that had came to him he vanished out the window towards the tower soaring through the air. One might have thought a baby dragon was flying overhead if they didn't know about Avaris's nightly flights Instead though tbe people wondered where is Avaris going and possibly in there minds they called him there Savior there god, a practice Avaris had been and may never stop needing to discourage.

"Send a squad to survey the temple environs, and report back. Observation only, see if anything has changed. No foray unless I command it. Raise the banner for third alert, that means twenty-four hour watch." Crivelln's chain of command was used to his adminstering orders and executing them without question. Gareth, the Knight-Captain who had scrambled up to report the disturbance. "I need to speak with Solanath." Crivelln moved with a speed which belied his advancing years as he pivoted down the steps from which his captain had just exited from.

Down from the battlements, down the flight of watchtower stairs, the Knight-Errant of Heironeous reached the second floor where his meeting chamber was, a room which sat above the great hall of the first level where he held audience. His second-in-command, Sir Solanath the Rook, sat behind a large desk perusing through a large sheaf of missives.

"I need to leave on a matter of urgency." Those words would have been shocking, not just to Solanath, but to anyone else who knew Crivelln, for the Knight-Errant had not yet found any justifiable reason to leave his self-appointed post for as long as his men could remember. "You're in command until I return. Recall the Velderguard if necessary; they can oversee the northern and eastern districts without you overextending our men here." Crivelln laid the letter he received on the table: he was nothing if not accountable to his men as much as their were to him, and he kept no secrets from them. "I go immediately, but will send word once I have reached the wizard's tower. I expect my former companions to have been notified as well, but nonetheless dispatch a note to each of them as well." He scribbled some words, and pressed his signet against the wax seals quickly as if he had no time to lose.

With that, and without bothering to pack, Crivelln headed not to the stables, but back up another tower to what he termed his eyrie. There was stabled his own mount, Estralus, one of the finest specimens of pegasus anywhere in the Flaness. The groom wasted no time in hitching Estalus up, and off Crivelln went. His comrade, no his ex-comrade had summoned; something was wrong and Crivelln intended to find out exactly what it was.

Silvanus hesitates only for a moment...even if this is a trick or mistake it's source of significant power. I must seek immediately.
He rises. "High Druids, it is The Day I have foreseen!"

He takes an ancient shield from the ancient oak tree and put it on his back and everyone see him in a terror, whispering all at once.
Silence!

He put his arm on two druid shoulders, and they bow. He speak to the rest of them:
Gather any information about changes to ecological stability in the area around archmage Theobald's Tower. Martin and Petra will return with further instructions. Together we will preserve life!
And three of them step into the oak tree as he casts

Silvanus, flanked by his High Druids, steps out from the mighty and ancient oak tree at the centre of Greyhawk's public square. Normally a riot of colour and activity, with vendors hawking their wares and performers putting on all manner of entertainment, the square now resembles a blasted wasteland - carts and bodies lie broken amongst the rubble of collapsed buildings, the air is thick with dust and smoke, and the scene is cast in a ghastly red light as the sun struggles to penetrate the thick pall that hangs over everything. The great tree from which they've emerged is mortally wounded, its limbs shattered, bleeding sap from huge cracks in its trunk. A few people are picking through the rubble, half-dazed and smeared with ash and blood, but otherwise the square is deathly silent.

Theobald's Tower, which should be a few hundred yards away from the square, is gone. In its place is a smoking crater a hundred yards wide and fifty feet deep, some of the stones still glowing red-hot near the centre. The smoke is thickest in that direction.

---

From the air, the scale of the devastation is more apparent. The rising column of smoke can be seen from miles away as Avaris and Crivelln approach at speed. A gaping hole has been torn in the city, buildings knocked aside and scattered like a child's blocks away from where the Tower used to stand. Crowds of battered, frightened survivors gather around makeshift field hospitals in the areas that remain intact, as the City Watch attempt to maintain order and prevent panic.
OOC:
Silvanus, you'll have a little less than an hour before Avaris and Crivelln arrive. How do you want to spend that time?
Mar 18, 2022 12:52 pm
Silvanus order his druids to help treating wounded. Keep an aye for anyone blaming wizards for the disaster he say and turns into giant eagle to fly a circle around the city to check any damage made to wild nature around it or other signs of broken ecological balance.
OOC:
Graned he find that away from city everything is fine I would like to suggest that he will eventually spot his old friends arriving and join them
Mar 18, 2022 1:09 pm
Fortunately there doesn't seem to be any significant damage to the city's hinterland, although falling ash and dust might cause problems for small waterways in the area. Whatever happened, it was very localised and surprisingly well contained.
OOC:
Yes, I think this is a good time for everyone to meet up in the sky!
Mar 18, 2022 1:59 pm
OOC:
OK, I hope you don't mind I as a player will take lead in our conversation
Greeting, old friends. Guess you also got the message. The tower it was. Silvanus is laconic just as you remember him. Shall we investigate?
Silvanus would assume we split to speed up investigation. Silvanus would like to try investigate anything that's left of the tower and hope anyone else could take care to talk to people who may have some insight on what's happened.
OOC:
Silvanus is using Telepathic to communicate in eagle form and hear could hear you normally
Mar 18, 2022 5:18 pm
"It's true... and I doubt the body survived." as he stares at the remains of the tower another thought comes to his mind, "Do you think that whatever it is is coming to us?"
Mar 19, 2022 3:35 pm
The expanse between Hommlet and Greyhawk was not unfamiliar to Crivelln, being a central part of the civilised areas of Oerth. He flew over forests and farmsteads and not too much wildlands in between. This flight though was not for sightseeing. Estralus knew their master well enough to comprehend his purpose, and flew unwaveringly towards the city of Greyhawk, the jewel of the Flanness. As he neared the city proper Crivelln could make out a strange duo in the skies, a giant eagle and an aerial dragonborn side by side. His knew his former companions well enough to assume that they had arrived just before he did. Only Altea was missing from the quintet. And of course, Theo as well.

"Were it better that we met under different circumstances." Crivelln called out when he neared. "Have either of you surveyed the tower?" From his vantage he could see the smoking riun of where the wizard's tower once stood. "I shall report to the commander of watch of our arrival, and speak with the Mayor himself. Unless it was an accident, and Theo seemed certain that it wasn't, an attack on the tower in the heart of the city is an attack on Greyhawk itself."
Mar 19, 2022 6:26 pm
KoldikSteelskin says:
"Do you think that whatever it is is coming to us?"
Telepathic answer to Avaris : We must coming to him first

Telepathic to Crivelln: please do report, I will see what's left of the tower. Meet soon

And eagle flies toward the smoking crater that stands instead of the tower now. He turns into a human right after landing. Silvanus takes his
Decanter of Endless Water and speak word of pover to cause Geyser pour water on the stones still glowing red-hot and any other source of the smoke. He repeats that (since the magic item has endless water reserves) until it is possible to move into the crater to investigate it
[ +- ] Geyser
OOC:
Should the crater be hard to move by for a human SIlvanus would turn into a giant spider or something to prevent falling or any other troubles
Mar 21, 2022 4:22 am
The torrents of water from Silvanus' decanter produce huge clouds of steam as they hit the hot stone, which crackles and pops as it is rapidly cooled to the point where it is safe enough to walk on. The smoke and dust begin to clear, revealing an odd sight - a crumpled humanoid figure, bundled in heavy robes, suspended about a hundred feet above the floor of the crater. As the steam swirls around it, Silvanus can see the outlines of solid walls of force surrounding the figure on all sides.

Crivelln quickly locates the Lord Mayor - with the City Hall partially destroyed, a marquee has been set up as a headquarters for the Council. Some of the guards stand dumb-struck as Crivelln's pegasus lands near the tent; the higher-ranking veterans simply salute and wave him through to the makeshift Council Chamber. The Lord Mayor and various members of the Council are discussing their plans over a large map of the city. They turn to Crivelln as he enters, their tired faces displaying plain relief at his arrival.

"Lord Commander!" Lord Mayor Gasgal strides forward to clasp Crivelln's hand. "We just received word of your arrival - would that it were under better circumstances! We can't thank you enough for coming to the city's aid."
Mar 21, 2022 11:30 am
"Nothing can prepare you for this..." 'and I might have even seen it coming,' Avaris has seen the ripples of big events across the Astral Plane before, he should have noticed something this time, and he had but he'd grown to accustomed to peace...

"Nobody has addressed the people of the city, I guess that's my job." Avaris says as the other two leave him, boosting himself up to around 70 feet he turns himself around focusing on where many people have gathered to see what has occurred.

"Citizens of Greyhawk, I wish we could have met in more pleasant circumstances, but before now I could not afford the time of a visit I assume you saw what happened here, and perhaps that means that you will prove more useful than you think but fist lets address what happened, In the centre of this city stood a great tower, which my Dear friend Archmage Theobald, called home today that tower is destroyed, we try to not look behind ourselves to what one could have done better but when someone has died everyone finds themselves looking back considering what they would have done if they knew he we're to die, I do not claim Theobald was the only one to die today but certainly he was the one which I most strongly feel the loss of perhaps he had an apprentice that also died, I do not know, and even now I am wishing I did know wishing I'd spent more time with Theobald,

I will ask all of you to keep yourselves safe, however I am also in need of Information so I can best keep everyone safe, so if you have information I would ask that you come and meet me I will be beside the Statue of... Where Theobald's statue once stood."

he files himself over to the statue and awaits the onslaught of worried citizens asking as many if not more question then they answer.

Silvanus turns into eagle again and fly up to see the figure close and understand where does the energy to maintain the wall of force originate from? He is looking around for possible other wizard concentrating on the wall.
But first of all he don't want to let figure to fall from that height should it be what's left of Theo. He would catch it if the wall disappear.

Avaris is quickly swarmed by confused and frightened citizens, most simply asking for help rather than offering any useful information. The best he can glean is that everything seemed normal - it was a typical market day, the weather was fine, and then the wizard's tower simply exploded, bursting from within. There was no warning, no sign of attack.

---

On closer inspection, Silvanus can recall seeing this kind of spell before - Theo used to call it a "force-cage". It is an impenetrable, barely-perceptible cube of pure magical energy, and while Silvanus does not fully grasp the nuances of its formation, he is aware that once conjured, it is stable for a considerable time without further attention from the caster. Roughly an hour, if he recalls correctly, which if it were cast around the time of the explosion would mean it could collapse at any moment...

As if on cue, the barrier shimmers and evaporates into nothingness. The figure begins to fall, screaming and flailing, and Silvanus catches it in his talons. Fists beat at him in panic, but weakly, and he ignores the blows while guiding them both to a relatively gentle landing. The figure collapses, then struggles to its feet. The hood of its robe falls back, revealing a dark-haired human man - Silvanus vaguely recalls the name Peregrine, the most promising of Theobald's apprentices. The skin on his face and hands looks sunburned, and his eyes are clouded to the point where they appear almost completely white. He reaches out blindly with a shaking hand, and says, "Wh-who's there?"
Mar 22, 2022 12:40 pm
"Lord Mayor, apologies for our most sudden appearance. The safety and well-being of your good city and its people, and of course our erstwhile colleague, is of paramount importance to us." His other friends had wasted no time in immediately investigating the cause of the explosion, and in fact Crivelln could hear Avaris flying above to address the concerned citizens of Greyhawk. More used to observing the protocols and sovereignties of countries and city-states, Crivelln had instead gone straight to the City Council.

"Tell me everything you know of the sequence of events that led up to this point. Have you spoken with witnesses and bystanders yet? Do we have a safety cordon around the area, ringed with guards as well as a protective magic circle? If you require it, I shall mobilise some of my men to lend aid. Let us manage the scene in such a manner first before we proceed to investigate the area ourselves."
Mar 22, 2022 2:45 pm
Gasgal looks frankly relieved at Crivelln's suggestion of handling the investigation.

"We don't know much, unfortunately. Theobald would sometimes warn the Council in advance of one of his experiments if he thought there was a chance it might go awry, but we hadn't had word from him in some time. Today seemed much like any other, and then the whole damned tower exploded! Thank goodness we weren't in session, otherwise the whole Council might have been wiped out."

"If you're willing to help with the investigation, we would truly appreciate it. We've got our hands full just trying to make sure that everyone has food and shelter, and making tallies of the missing and the dead. We can't spare the guards to keep the area secure, though from what I'm told, everything in the tower was destroyed, so I can't imagine why anyone would want to go back there. But yes, by all means - bring in your knights if needed, and conduct the investigation however you wish. I'm officially placing you in charge of those matters, and I'll have my people report to you if they encounter anything suspicious or hear any credible rumours among the populace."
Mar 22, 2022 3:50 pm
Silvanus send telephatic message "You are safe now. This is Silvanus speaking. You have to drink water" he turns from eagle to human and repeat the message in voice passing his waterskin.
OOC:
Silvanus would also cast cure wounds if that would mechanically help apprentice to ease pain or even heal him.
Only after treating apprentice he would ask him: What could you tell be about... I mean what just happened here in last few hours. I have magically received a letter from your master Theobald... and he explains the content of the message and then give time for apprentice to share his insight.
Mar 23, 2022 1:22 pm
OOC:
Cure Wounds will provide him some measure of relief, as he is badly burned. It unfortunately won't do anything to restore his sight.
At the mere mention of Theobald's name, Peregrine's face crumples and he slumps to the ground in despair, weeping openly. He is inconsolable for quite some time, despite Silvanus' best efforts. By the time he has composed himself enough to speak, Crivelln and Avaris have returned to check in.

"Master Theobald was experimenting with the Heart of Scrallimenaxian - though the dragon is long dead, it still held considerable magical power, and he was convinced that if he could just find a way to harness it... I don't know how his ritual was supposed to work. He only had me assisting with circles and wards - the geometry was so complex. I must have made a mistake." His weak frame heaves with huge sobs.

"I'm finished as a wizard. Everything I've worked for, my whole life is over. There's no way he'll keep me on after this. Months of preparation, priceless components, all for nothing because of me. I'm sure there will be some damage to the Tower as well. And on top of all that, he'll have to start growing a new clone. I saw his body disintegrate - it's the last thing I saw, I can't stop seeing it - so he will certainly have had to rebirth. Is... is he back yet? I don't think I can face him. Oh, why couldn't he have just let me die!"
Mar 23, 2022 1:48 pm
Typically Avaris could sit for hours, maybe even weeks answering the same question to many different people, but today he knew something was different sitting there wasn't going to get him anything, even though he knew he should be comforting the people at the same time he knew that he couldn't not with everything in turmoil, eventually he stood walking up the side of the nearest building so he could more easily address everyone once again,
"I thank you all for your time today, in this very city there has been much loss, but you are a strong people! you have what it takes to make it day in and day out, you can despite all that it takes to live daily you are a people that goes above and beyond helping one another out, as I leave I ask you to remember that though lots may happen to you i ask you to remain strong, we may soon be facing another difficult time in our lives a time where the people need to look out for one another, But let me remind you that wherever you are whatever your doing the gods will always be with you, unlike us they cannot be killed and they are nearly unchanging they will continue to support you forever!"

with that last speech out of the way hopefully addressing the very questions the rest of the hoard was coming to ask him Avaris dashes off towards the remains of the tower.
