Crivelln looked out over the battlements of his keep, maintaining his eternal vigil over the twisted spires of the Temple of Elemental Evil. The dark edifice maintained its sinister aspect, but it had been quiet of late.

The stones of the keep shuddered, conveying to his fingertips a vast shock from deep within the earth on which it stood. Instantly his hand went to the hilt of his greatsword, alert for any danger, but the disturbance vanished as suddenly as it had come. The Temple stood unchanged.

Moments later, a breathless Knight-Captain joined him on the battlements. "Lord Commander, we're mustering our defences. Is it... do we know the cause?"

Crivelln shook his head grimly. "Nothing obvious. Yet."

From the darkening sky, a pale white dove descended to alight on the battlements. It ruffled its feathers with a strange sound - the rustling of paper, which Crivelln could now see that it was constructed from. It walked a few steps toward him, stretched its wings, and... unfolded itself, the intricate pleats and creases vanishing from its form until it lay as a flat sheet of white paper with words scribed in black ink. Crivelln caught it before it blew away in the chill wind. His own name was written at the top, in a familiar hand.

Silvanus stayed silent while the High Druids argued, showing no sign of supporting one side or the other. This was one of the more tedious aspects of these annual gatherings - banal matters of policy, funding allocation, the squabbles of those aligned in purpose but divided in approach. It wasn't truly necessary for the Arch-Druid himself to attend the discussions, but he felt it was important, both to keep himself informed and to provide final arbitration should the Circle be too evenly split to find resolution. Still, not all the details were essential, and he allowed his mind to wander as he stared into the Eternal Flame that illuminated their council.

The magical flame guttered, and for an instant it vanished entirely. Though it roared back to life in the span of a heartbeat, Silvanus was shaken. No mere movement of air could extinguish it; this was an ill omen indeed.

An oak leaf landed on the table in front of him. He barely noticed it amid the sudden silence as the druids waited, pondering what the flickering flame could portend. Then it began to move of its own accord, and suddenly had his full attention. It unfolded into a sheet of deep green paper with writing that looked to have been scorched into its surface.

---

Altea finished her sermon, the echoes of her clear voice ringing through the temple. The congregation of worshippers were hushed, staring up at her - most had tears in their eyes, a mixture of joy at being in her presence and sorrow that the sharing of her divine wisdom was concluded. She could read their faces, their emotions, so clearly... but could she truly sense their inner thoughts, their deepest fears and desires, as a goddess ought? She told herself that she could, and indeed, she truly believed it.

As she turned over the final page of her speech, she found an extra sheet of paper which she was certain hadn't been there when she began. She picked it up curiously, watching the words - which seemed to be written in gold leaf - catch the light. Her audience remained deathly silent, unsure of what was happening but grateful for a few moments more of her glory.

Avaris sat in a deep trance, his consciousness expanding in contemplation of the universe and its mysteries. It was a pure and perfect calm - the dissolution of self as he subsumed into all of Creation.

But like the shadow of a vast and deadly predator beneath the surface of a pristine lake, something moved with barely a ripple disturbing the tranquility - some Calamity, rushing swiftly toward Becoming. He barely had time to comprehend it before it became manifest, a terrible wrongness wrenching at the heart of everything. He cried out and fell as if struck, his meditation broken, a terrible fear coiling in his chest.

As he lay, trying to focus on his breathing as Master Fleeple had taught him so many years ago, an exquisite origami butterfly fluttered into his chamber and unfolded itself into his hand.

Theo! seeing that name is enough to snap Avaris out of his trance, my dear friend he had seen from many politicians and others trying to win his support, but never did anyone mention the name of the others, and certainly not while signing off, this was not some man trying to make his way in the world by standing atop others shoulders this was someone one of the very few people in the world Avaris had actually cared about, sure he cared about everyone but that was why sometimes he would put his life before the lives of others, it was calculated, if I die there I can no longer do good, he had risked his life not once but twice for Theo though and at least as many times for the rest of the group, he reached over to the wall beside him and pulled on a rope, he was barely ever disturbed but this was to ensure that he wouldn't be disturbed at all, then he began to read.
'death is natural...' he tried to tell himself but he had died once and with him some part of him had died even when he was brought back, memories prehaps he wasn't sure all he knew was that the other told him he'd changed. he made a quick count of how many years had passed, 'No' he breathed out the word silently but projected the thought to the rooms beyond, 'he shouldn't have died yet' wherever he died we could go there and... Beyond hope of resurrection those words scared him he knew what that looked like, in there last fight they we're painfully aware of the fact that we're any of them to die about that lava it would be a permanent death, but even that they had found a way around it after the battle, the tower... these messages... of course he would be in the tower but the these messages that meant he contacted all of them.

He grabbed the dragon vial, one of the few possessions he'd chosen to keep on him, why? He supposed it was because it allowed flight, and flight had become something he felt starved without every night he would fly through the air but those flights rarely lasted longer than a few minutes, he needed a longer stretch of flight at the moment, pouring the potion that came out of the vial directly into his mouth, taking his boomerang from the shelf where it now lived and strapping on his boots he was startled to see High Priest Elavin Moodshadow standing behind him, "I heard your cry" was all she said but so much more that that was clear she was shaking something that frightened Avaris was bound to be dangerous, "I just received a call from my friends," he said somewhat stiffly "I'm setting out Immediately."

With that Avaris stepped forward and like the bird that had came to him he vanished out the window towards the tower soaring through the air. One might have thought a baby dragon was flying overhead if they didn't know about Avaris's nightly flights Instead though tbe people wondered where is Avaris going and possibly in there minds they called him there Savior there god, a practice Avaris had been and may never stop needing to discourage.

"Send a squad to survey the temple environs, and report back. Observation only, see if anything has changed. No foray unless I command it. Raise the banner for third alert, that means twenty-four hour watch." Crivelln's chain of command was used to his adminstering orders and executing them without question. Gareth, the Knight-Captain who had scrambled up to report the disturbance. "I need to speak with Solanath." Crivelln moved with a speed which belied his advancing years as he pivoted down the steps from which his captain had just exited from.

Down from the battlements, down the flight of watchtower stairs, the Knight-Errant of Heironeous reached the second floor where his meeting chamber was, a room which sat above the great hall of the first level where he held audience. His second-in-command, Sir Solanath the Rook, sat behind a large desk perusing through a large sheaf of missives.

"I need to leave on a matter of urgency." Those words would have been shocking, not just to Solanath, but to anyone else who knew Crivelln, for the Knight-Errant had not yet found any justifiable reason to leave his self-appointed post for as long as his men could remember. "You're in command until I return. Recall the Velderguard if necessary; they can oversee the northern and eastern districts without you overextending our men here." Crivelln laid the letter he received on the table: he was nothing if not accountable to his men as much as their were to him, and he kept no secrets from them. "I go immediately, but will send word once I have reached the wizard's tower. I expect my former companions to have been notified as well, but nonetheless dispatch a note to each of them as well." He scribbled some words, and pressed his signet against the wax seals quickly as if he had no time to lose.

With that, and without bothering to pack, Crivelln headed not to the stables, but back up another tower to what he termed his eyrie. There was stabled his own mount, Estralus, one of the finest specimens of pegasus anywhere in the Flaness. The groom wasted no time in hitching Estalus up, and off Crivelln went. His comrade, no his ex-comrade had summoned; something was wrong and Crivelln intended to find out exactly what it was.

Silvanus hesitates only for a moment...even if this is a trick or mistake it's source of significant power. I must seek immediately.
He rises. "High Druids, it is The Day I have foreseen!"

He takes an ancient shield from the ancient oak tree and put it on his back and everyone see him in a terror, whispering all at once.
Silence!

He put his arm on two druid shoulders, and they bow. He speak to the rest of them:
Gather any information about changes to ecological stability in the area around archmage Theobald's Tower. Martin and Petra will return with further instructions. Together we will preserve life!
And three of them step into the oak tree as he casts

Silvanus, flanked by his High Druids, steps out from the mighty and ancient oak tree at the centre of Greyhawk's public square. Normally a riot of colour and activity, with vendors hawking their wares and performers putting on all manner of entertainment, the square now resembles a blasted wasteland - carts and bodies lie broken amongst the rubble of collapsed buildings, the air is thick with dust and smoke, and the scene is cast in a ghastly red light as the sun struggles to penetrate the thick pall that hangs over everything. The great tree from which they've emerged is mortally wounded, its limbs shattered, bleeding sap from huge cracks in its trunk. A few people are picking through the rubble, half-dazed and smeared with ash and blood, but otherwise the square is deathly silent.

Theobald's Tower, which should be a few hundred yards away from the square, is gone. In its place is a smoking crater a hundred yards wide and fifty feet deep, some of the stones still glowing red-hot near the centre. The smoke is thickest in that direction.

---

From the air, the scale of the devastation is more apparent. The rising column of smoke can be seen from miles away as Avaris and Crivelln approach at speed. A gaping hole has been torn in the city, buildings knocked aside and scattered like a child's blocks away from where the Tower used to stand. Crowds of battered, frightened survivors gather around makeshift field hospitals in the areas that remain intact, as the City Watch attempt to maintain order and prevent panic.
OOC:
Silvanus, you'll have a little less than an hour before Avaris and Crivelln arrive. How do you want to spend that time?
Mar 18, 2022 12:52 pm
Silvanus order his druids to help treating wounded. Keep an aye for anyone blaming wizards for the disaster he say and turns into giant eagle to fly a circle around the city to check any damage made to wild nature around it or other signs of broken ecological balance.
OOC:
Graned he find that away from city everything is fine I would like to suggest that he will eventually spot his old friends arriving and join them
Mar 18, 2022 1:09 pm
Fortunately there doesn't seem to be any significant damage to the city's hinterland, although falling ash and dust might cause problems for small waterways in the area. Whatever happened, it was very localised and surprisingly well contained.
OOC:

Mar 19, 2022 3:35 pm
The expanse between Hommlet and Greyhawk was not unfamiliar to Crivelln, being a central part of the civilised areas of Oerth. He flew over forests and farmsteads and not too much wildlands in between. This flight though was not for sightseeing. Estralus knew their master well enough to comprehend his purpose, and flew unwaveringly towards the city of Greyhawk, the jewel of the Flanness. As he neared the city proper Crivelln could make out a strange duo in the skies, a giant eagle and an aerial dragonborn side by side. His knew his former companions well enough to assume that they had arrived just before he did. Only Altea was missing from the quintet. And of course, Theo as well.

"Were it better that we met under different circumstances." Crivelln called out when he neared. "Have either of you surveyed the tower?" From his vantage he could see the smoking riun of where the wizard's tower once stood. "I shall report to the commander of watch of our arrival, and speak with the Mayor himself. Unless it was an accident, and Theo seemed certain that it wasn't, an attack on the tower in the heart of the city is an attack on Greyhawk itself."
Mar 19, 2022 6:26 pm
KoldikSteelskin says:
"Do you think that whatever it is is coming to us?"
Telepathic answer to Avaris : We must coming to him first

Telepathic to Crivelln: please do report, I will see what's left of the tower. Meet soon

And eagle flies toward the smoking crater that stands instead of the tower now. He turns into a human right after landing. Silvanus takes his
Decanter of Endless Water and speak word of pover to cause Geyser pour water on the stones still glowing red-hot and any other source of the smoke. He repeats that (since the magic item has endless water reserves) until it is possible to move into the crater to investigate it

The torrents of water from Silvanus' decanter produce huge clouds of steam as they hit the hot stone, which crackles and pops as it is rapidly cooled to the point where it is safe enough to walk on. The smoke and dust begin to clear, revealing an odd sight - a crumpled humanoid figure, bundled in heavy robes, suspended about a hundred feet above the floor of the crater. As the steam swirls around it, Silvanus can see the outlines of solid walls of force surrounding the figure on all sides.

Crivelln quickly locates the Lord Mayor - with the City Hall partially destroyed, a marquee has been set up as a headquarters for the Council. Some of the guards stand dumb-struck as Crivelln's pegasus lands near the tent; the higher-ranking veterans simply salute and wave him through to the makeshift Council Chamber. The Lord Mayor and various members of the Council are discussing their plans over a large map of the city. They turn to Crivelln as he enters, their tired faces displaying plain relief at his arrival.

"Lord Commander!" Lord Mayor Gasgal strides forward to clasp Crivelln's hand. "We just received word of your arrival - would that it were under better circumstances! We can't thank you enough for coming to the city's aid."
Mar 21, 2022 11:30 am
"Nothing can prepare you for this..." 'and I might have even seen it coming,' Avaris has seen the ripples of big events across the Astral Plane before, he should have noticed something this time, and he had but he'd grown to accustomed to peace...

"Nobody has addressed the people of the city, I guess that's my job." Avaris says as the other two leave him, boosting himself up to around 70 feet he turns himself around focusing on where many people have gathered to see what has occurred.

"Citizens of Greyhawk, I wish we could have met in more pleasant circumstances, but before now I could not afford the time of a visit I assume you saw what happened here, and perhaps that means that you will prove more useful than you think but fist lets address what happened, In the centre of this city stood a great tower, which my Dear friend Archmage Theobald, called home today that tower is destroyed, we try to not look behind ourselves to what one could have done better but when someone has died everyone finds themselves looking back considering what they would have done if they knew he we're to die, I do not claim Theobald was the only one to die today but certainly he was the one which I most strongly feel the loss of perhaps he had an apprentice that also died, I do not know, and even now I am wishing I did know wishing I'd spent more time with Theobald,

I will ask all of you to keep yourselves safe, however I am also in need of Information so I can best keep everyone safe, so if you have information I would ask that you come and meet me I will be beside the Statue of... Where Theobald's statue once stood."

he files himself over to the statue and awaits the onslaught of worried citizens asking as many if not more question then they answer.

Avaris is quickly swarmed by confused and frightened citizens, most simply asking for help rather than offering any useful information. The best he can glean is that everything seemed normal - it was a typical market day, the weather was fine, and then the wizard's tower simply exploded, bursting from within. There was no warning, no sign of attack.

---

On closer inspection, Silvanus can recall seeing this kind of spell before - Theo used to call it a "force-cage". It is an impenetrable, barely-perceptible cube of pure magical energy, and while Silvanus does not fully grasp the nuances of its formation, he is aware that once conjured, it is stable for a considerable time without further attention from the caster. Roughly an hour, if he recalls correctly, which if it were cast around the time of the explosion would mean it could collapse at any moment...

As if on cue, the barrier shimmers and evaporates into nothingness. The figure begins to fall, screaming and flailing, and Silvanus catches it in his talons. Fists beat at him in panic, but weakly, and he ignores the blows while guiding them both to a relatively gentle landing. The figure collapses, then struggles to its feet. The hood of its robe falls back, revealing a dark-haired human man - Silvanus vaguely recalls the name Peregrine, the most promising of Theobald's apprentices. The skin on his face and hands looks sunburned, and his eyes are clouded to the point where they appear almost completely white. He reaches out blindly with a shaking hand, and says, "Wh-who's there?"
Mar 22, 2022 12:40 pm
"Lord Mayor, apologies for our most sudden appearance. The safety and well-being of your good city and its people, and of course our erstwhile colleague, is of paramount importance to us." His other friends had wasted no time in immediately investigating the cause of the explosion, and in fact Crivelln could hear Avaris flying above to address the concerned citizens of Greyhawk. More used to observing the protocols and sovereignties of countries and city-states, Crivelln had instead gone straight to the City Council.

"Tell me everything you know of the sequence of events that led up to this point. Have you spoken with witnesses and bystanders yet? Do we have a safety cordon around the area, ringed with guards as well as a protective magic circle? If you require it, I shall mobilise some of my men to lend aid. Let us manage the scene in such a manner first before we proceed to investigate the area ourselves."
Mar 22, 2022 2:45 pm
Gasgal looks frankly relieved at Crivelln's suggestion of handling the investigation.

"We don't know much, unfortunately. Theobald would sometimes warn the Council in advance of one of his experiments if he thought there was a chance it might go awry, but we hadn't had word from him in some time. Today seemed much like any other, and then the whole damned tower exploded! Thank goodness we weren't in session, otherwise the whole Council might have been wiped out."

"If you're willing to help with the investigation, we would truly appreciate it. We've got our hands full just trying to make sure that everyone has food and shelter, and making tallies of the missing and the dead. We can't spare the guards to keep the area secure, though from what I'm told, everything in the tower was destroyed, so I can't imagine why anyone would want to go back there. But yes, by all means - bring in your knights if needed, and conduct the investigation however you wish. I'm officially placing you in charge of those matters, and I'll have my people report to you if they encounter anything suspicious or hear any credible rumours among the populace."
Mar 22, 2022 3:50 pm

OOC:
Cure Wounds will provide him some measure of relief, as he is badly burned. It unfortunately won't do anything to restore his sight.
At the mere mention of Theobald's name, Peregrine's face crumples and he slumps to the ground in despair, weeping openly. He is inconsolable for quite some time, despite Silvanus' best efforts. By the time he has composed himself enough to speak, Crivelln and Avaris have returned to check in.

"Master Theobald was experimenting with the Heart of Scrallimenaxian - though the dragon is long dead, it still held considerable magical power, and he was convinced that if he could just find a way to harness it... I don't know how his ritual was supposed to work. He only had me assisting with circles and wards - the geometry was so complex. I must have made a mistake." His weak frame heaves with huge sobs.

"I'm finished as a wizard. Everything I've worked for, my whole life is over. There's no way he'll keep me on after this. Months of preparation, priceless components, all for nothing because of me. I'm sure there will be some damage to the Tower as well. And on top of all that, he'll have to start growing a new clone. I saw his body disintegrate - it's the last thing I saw, I can't stop seeing it - so he will certainly have had to rebirth. Is... is he back yet? I don't think I can face him. Oh, why couldn't he have just let me die!"
Mar 23, 2022 1:48 pm
Typically Avaris could sit for hours, maybe even weeks answering the same question to many different people, but today he knew something was different sitting there wasn't going to get him anything, even though he knew he should be comforting the people at the same time he knew that he couldn't not with everything in turmoil, eventually he stood walking up the side of the nearest building so he could more easily address everyone once again,
"I thank you all for your time today, in this very city there has been much loss, but you are a strong people! you have what it takes to make it day in and day out, you can despite all that it takes to live daily you are a people that goes above and beyond helping one another out, as I leave I ask you to remember that though lots may happen to you i ask you to remain strong, we may soon be facing another difficult time in our lives a time where the people need to look out for one another, But let me remind you that wherever you are whatever your doing the gods will always be with you, unlike us they cannot be killed and they are nearly unchanging they will continue to support you forever!"

with that last speech out of the way hopefully addressing the very questions the rest of the hoard was coming to ask him Avaris dashes off towards the remains of the tower.

Green talks to apprentice: You need to relax young man. Based on amount of damage I don't believe it was your mistake. It was rather a sabotage. Done on purpose.
Do you know where did Theo get the Heart of Scrallimenaxian from? Who had an access to it?

Silvanus share what he has learned with Avaris and telepathically only to Avaris: "I did not tell him Theo may be gone forever. Not yet."

"Master Theobald's had the Heart in his possession ever since he and his companions slew the dragon. Wait..." Peregrine looks nervous as it suddenly dawns on him who he's dealing with. "Did you say your name was Silvanus? As in... the Arch-Druid? Did you not know that he had taken the wyrm's heart for his research? And why would you be here at all... unless..."

The colour drains from the man's face, and he looks like he's about to faint. "Has... has something gone wrong with Master Theobald's rebirth? Was the clone damaged somehow? Oh, gods..."
Mar 24, 2022 12:57 pm
"Peregrine, It seems you survived for a reason, from what I've heard anyone in the tower shouldn't have survived without powerful magic, it seems in the end Peregrine Theo chose to save you over the his own life, however you said he has a clone, where might we find this clone, for it is possible that the clone is still alive." he pats Peregrine on the shoulder, "My boy if Theo saw something special in you I believe you will one day become something very special, he always seemed to expect I'll from people and well I'll admit it might have saved our lives it wasn't the sort of thing that made a person likely to save someone else's life over their own. which means either he survived or he saw something very special in you."

Avaris holds back all the question about Theo that keep pounding into his mind, How had he changed? Did he look older now? What was the purpose of his experiments?

He looks at Silvanus with a newfound joy, he can still reconnect with the others he won't make the same mistake twice.

Very well said, my old friend. Now Peregrine you are absolutely right, we are here because something went wrong with rebirth.
Now why don't you tell us everything from the moment ritual begun till you saw body disintegrate?
But wait... you a wizard

"Very well Lord Mayor, you have my assurance that we will get to the bottom of this. You may dedicate your efforts to disaster relief. I recommend you set up your chirurgic centres here and here, and draft your temple clerics to man them. The clerks from town hall ought to bring their census documents to begin accounting for the populace who used to reside here. Send for the labourers, but have them on standby, we'll need their muscle once we start working through the ruins.

I understand the problem to originate from the tower, than from an external threat. All the same, put the city watch on alert. I will send for one detachment of my soldiers, but they will take a day to arrive. Now if you will permit me, I shall want to look over what is left of the tower myself."
Crivelln spoke with the confidence of one who was used to adminstering an entire city itself as he described what immediately needed to be done. With a written note handed over to Estralus, he urged his pegasus to the skies to deliver a message back to Hommlet to have Sir Regil deployed with a squad of his garrion hospitallers. That done, he turned and headed towards the tower.

His approach was swift, purposeful but deliberate, intended to take in the full view of the environs towards the tower. As he neared, instead of heading straight towards the ruins, he made a circle around the radius of the explosion, attuning his senses to his surroundings to see if he could detect anything untoward that either might have caused the explosion, been the result of the explosion, or inadvertently caught in its wake. If there was something that was out of the ordinary, Crivelln wanted to pick it up. He continued circling in smaller circles until he reached where Avaris and Silvanus were.

Extending his magical senses, Crivelln makes a thorough sweep of the area. He does not find any abberations, celestials, elementals, fey, fiends, or undead anywhere in the vicinity, nor any consecrated or desecrated areas.

Peregrine seems a bit lost and confused as Silvanus abruptly departs, but returns to Avaris' question. "Ah... the clone, yes. It was hidden in a secret laboratory, protected by magical wards. I know its location, though I don't know how to bypass the defences - I think it would permit only Theobald himself. I would be happy to take you there... except that it would be very difficult to navigate while I remain, er, in my current state." He waves a hand in front of his blind eyes.
Mar 26, 2022 4:27 pm
Criv! the boys blind make your way this way!" Avaris says as he runs towards Crivlen carrying Peregrine.
Mar 27, 2022 1:16 pm
Crivelln kept his composure in the face of the devastation wrought by the explosion. A crater in the heart of the city was no small matter. He saw a figure floating in the air, as if in a bubble. That figure fell, but he could see Silvanus already present to intercept it, followed by Avaris' arriving. He picked his way across the circle of rubble and ruin to see if he there were others fallen, injured, or worse, dead, but he found no one in his path. As her neared he found Avaris heading towards him with the fallen man in his arms. It was time to call upon the most important power he had at his disposal: not the ones that caused injury and death, but the one that healed and saved lives.

Instinctively he reached for the figure, needing no further explanation. His true sense immediately knew what was needed, and with his massive strength he cradled the man while with his other hand he channeled healing.

"How are you feeling? Are there others with you hurt? Is Theobald ... ?" He looked at the other two, their expressions confirming his conclusions. "Have you swept the place yet? Any clues? Evidence to investigate?

Peregrine blinks and stares at the devastation around him. "This... this is impossible."

Looking back to Avaris and Crivelln, he frowns. "I don't mean, 'Oh no, I can't believe this has happened.' I mean that this is impossible. The Tower was suffused with powerful abjurations, reinforced way beyond anything that could have happened if the experiment went wrong. Even if all the energy in the Heart had been released at once, there were failsafes, contingencies... Master Theobald maintained those himself. The Tower should have been indestructible for anything less than the direct intervention of a being of godlike power."

After a moment, he recovers. "But yes, I can take you to the Sanctuary whenever you're ready."
Mar 28, 2022 11:02 am
Avaris only nods as Peregrine speaks of how Impossible this is knowing that comparably he was easy to kill all someone needed to do was make there way into the Astral plane find him and cut that cord... or any being even one from the Astral plane itself.

"Yes we're aware this shouldn't happen some would say couldn't but not to long ago I remember when they called what Theo himself could do Impossible, so I have given up on the Idea of the Impossible, however as Silvanus told you this was certainly not an accident, come let us see if Theo's Clone lives."

He looks at the boy in a new light, why hadn't Theo told the boy that not to long ago his own magic was considered Impossible, some of what all of them did was considered Impossible, until they did it, but that aside maybe Theo was a poor teacher, after all what had he ever learned from Theo, except to fear his life, Theo had taught him the fear of death like nobody else could.
Mar 29, 2022 1:43 pm
"Peregrine is correct. This should not have happened." Crivelln considered how to proceed. If Theobald had a clone as contingency, it would be the obvious thing to have the clone recount whatever had happened in order to have caused the accident. But only when they were done here. "Answer Silvanus' question. You were assisting Theobald in his experiments? What exactly was he doing? Who else was present? What did you last see before the explosion occurred? Understand these questions are directed at you because you are possibly the only witness. "

"Silvanus, do you have divinations to perform here?"
Mar 29, 2022 2:46 pm
"Yes Perengrine anything you can tell us is appreciated." he shoots Crivlan a look that comes with a message, 'Criv I'm trying to make the boy feel safe not feel like he's in an interrogation room!'

Silvanus returns after fruitless ruin search and explains that he do not find in necessary to use any spells right now.
Then he excuse himself to find his druids (he would tell them to return home to there is no immediate threat to the world balance, but they may need to continue without Silvanus presented. He have immediate matters right now).
He will be back to join the team visiting Sanctuary.

"Hmm, how can I explain... It's a bit like a cask of ale, I suppose. The barrel, or the Heart in this case, is full of magical energy... er, ale... bursting to get out. You can't just smash the barrel, the ale will go everywhere and be lost, you'll barely get any of it. But if you carefully tap it with a spigot so that you can control how the ale comes out, you can get mug after mug of ale whenever you want. Right? That's what Master Theobald was trying to do with the Heart, although it's a bit more, uh, metaphysical than just knocking a tap through wood."

"Before the explosion, I was working on one of the containment circles. I heard Master Theobald shout a warning - he was standing over near the Heart - and by the time I looked up he'd already conjured the force-cage around me. I couldn't hear anything once the cage manifested, but an instant later the Heart lit up, brighter than the sun, brighter than anything I've ever seen. I saw Master Theobald's silhouette against the light, then it disintegrated. After that, I couldn't see anything."
Mar 30, 2022 12:45 pm
"That must have been horrible, Peregrine, i'd like to make it clear that if you don't want to join us heading to the sanctuary you need not, however that is where we wish to head so I would ask that you at least point us in the right direction."
Mar 30, 2022 1:42 pm
Peregrine shakes his head. "No, it's fine - I'm happy to take you there. I need to find out what's happened to Master Theobald more than anyone. That said... I won't be coming inside with you, if that's all right. Master Theobald's sanctuary is where he went to be alone, and it is very much designed to keep everyone else out. I don't think he would have used any lethal intrusion countermeasures, but I honestly can't say for sure, and it probably gets worse the deeper you go. Anyway, I'll get started."

He draws a pouch of arcane components from within his robe, and begins scribing a magic circle in chalk on the scorched stone. When the circle is complete, he speaks a few words and waves his hands, and it begins to glow, the air above it shimmering. "If you'll follow me, please," Peregrine says as he steps into the circle, and vanishes in a flash of light.
Mar 30, 2022 4:00 pm
And for all we know the apprentice might be the cause of it, intentionally or inadvertently. Crivelln replied to Avaris. If Theobald had judged Peregrine worthy enough to be an apprentice, then Peregrine ought to possess sufficient moral fiber for cross-questioning, if he truly cared for his master as he ought.

"Regil of my Hospitallers will arrive shortly to help organise the city's repair efforts and secure the zone from further contamination, and also to prevent others from snooping around a wizard's ruined tower. I believe we can now investigate the sanctuary, assuming that that place has not yet been adversely affected. Theobald suspected foul play, so there's no reason to assume everything is what it seems until we examine and verify all we look into." Crivelln stepped into the circle, intending to be first to arrive.
Mar 30, 2022 4:29 pm
Silvanus follow silently. He keep his worries to himself
Mar 30, 2022 4:33 pm
"Then Why did he get saved in the force cage?" Avaris responds Immediately realizing it came of much harsher than intended, but Crivelln is gone so he doesn't get a chance to change what he meant, Oh why does telepathy have to reveal so much of your emotions? Avaris wonders the realizes perhaps it's only my method of Telepathy that reveals such perhaps other methods are more like speaking.

Slowly Avaris takes a step forwards and into the circle.

You arrive in a small, circular room with rough, unfinished stone walls. There are no windows. Much of its floor space is given over to another teleportation circle, permanently inlaid in silver into the rock. The faint glow from the circle is the only source of illumination, until Peregrine speaks a word and conjures a ball of light which rises to hover overhead.

The room has very few other features: a small arrangement of comfortable-looking chairs, a doorway beyond which you can make out a staircase leading down into the darkness, and a small silver bell hanging from a bracket affixed to the wall. Next to the bell is a hand-written note which reads, "Do not disturb unless it is an EMERGENCY".

"It's a bit like a tower," Peregrine explains, "Only in reverse. This is the top floor - I'm not sure how many there are in total. I'll wait here until you return. Let me know if there's anything else you need."
Mar 31, 2022 2:07 pm
"I think right now is certainly an Emergency though I don't know how useful the bell will be, I guess it's worth a shot though," Avaris says ringing the bell.

SIlvanus summons his Wildlife spirit, it looks just like Crivelln and Avaris remembers it - it looks like a small floating fire elemental, does not talk and hovers.

He say to the spirit "I'm involved in a dangerous situation yet gain, would you watch my back please"
Then he turns into a giant spider and moves down the stairs, not touching the stairs however - he would keep to the ceilings or walls. Spirit would follow him some 30-40 foots behind, hovering.

Crivelln waited as Avaris rang the bell. "The force cage could simply be a fail safe spell." he continued the conversation with the monk, talking through the possibilities of what had happened since they still had so little by way of evidence.

"If he had a fail safe set up it would be on himself..." It's becoming obvious Avaris is less and less sure of himself the more Criveln holds to his position, at least less ready to argue.
Apr 1, 2022 1:41 pm
"True, and yet it's worth noting Theo did not conjure up the force cage for both of them, even if we assume he was selfless enough to want to save his apprentice." The paladin continued his analysis; it was one of his traits, a dogged determinism to get to the bottom of anything once he had set his mind to it.

Not sure if your conversation is telephatic and Silvanus could hear it, but assuming he does

Maybe Theo were certain he is safe due to his clone, while apprentice not. The question don't sound like a question - seems Silvanus get used to talk authoritative to his druids lately and can't stop doing that.
He probably realise that and you feel actual question in next message There is just one way to figure out, don't you think? Shall we?! Spider stops in and wait for reaction.
Apr 1, 2022 1:56 pm
"Are you suggesting the force cage came not from Theo at all but from another who wanted to save Peregrine?"
Apr 1, 2022 2:36 pm
Spider crawls back into into the room and turns into human. Silvanus and talks slowly Probably I missed the reason of your concern. Here is how I see it happened: Theobald understand he can't stop the blast. He knows he has clone so he will will not die, but Peregrine will. It is only obvious he would cast that force box spell on Peregrine being certain his soul will transfer to clone.
The important question is - why we have not met him in his clone body yet!
Who and why saved apprentice is secondary question don't you agree?
OOC:
Sorry, I really don't get it as a player what's your concern and why don't we proceed with the story? Do you want to interrogate Peregrine before we move on? If he is indeed BBEG then we break the story. If he is not we just waste time. That's how I see it as a player

OOC:
Oh no concern at all GreyWord, I was just roleplaying the conversation between Crivelln and Avaris while waiting for the DM to post. In terms of story, Avaris rang the bell, and Crivelln is waiting as well for a response to the bell before investigating. Silvanus has on the other hand already gone ahead (and returned on hearing that his companions are having a telepathic conversation.)
Apr 1, 2022 3:04 pm
"That Question Was Directed towards Crivelln, because after all I agree with you, I don't think that Theo was worried about death which is why he put his efforts into saving Peregrine however I can't dismiss Crivelln's point as easily as I expected because there is some merit to the thought."
OOC:
Sorry that my post came after your first post there that made things confusing...
But Yeah, I'm waiting to see what we find out from the DM and since we're supposed to be a close group I figure it's best to RP with the other characters as much as possible especially when we have different points of view.
Apr 1, 2022 3:16 pm
The bell does nothing but make a soft tinkling sound as Avaris rings it. Peregrine looks over at him, startled. "Oh! Yes, that's for getting Master Theobald's attention when he's in the sanctuary. Which hopefully he is, I suppose - that would be the best-case scenario, that his rebirth went according to plan but he's just preoccupied or trapped for some reason. This way he won't be surprised if you barge in on him, which is probably for the best. Good thinking." He pauses for a second. "I've never had sufficient cause to ring it myself."

Silvanus descends in the form of a giant spider, followed by his wildfire spirit. After only a few dozen feet, the stairs become thick with spiderwebs - as a spider he can navigate them fairly easily, but the others would have a much harder time forcing their way through. The wildfire spirit simply glides through the webs, burning them away as it passes and leaving an easy path to follow.

Silvanus comes to a landing. The staircase continues downwards, but there is also a polished oak door with iron bands and a wrought-iron knob. There is no keyhole, but it seems to be locked.
Apr 1, 2022 3:55 pm
Seeing that Silvanus had already gone ahead of them, and that Peregrine had declared that he was going to stay put and not accompany them down, Crivelln nodded to Avaris and made his way forward as well. The wildfire spirit Silvanus had summoned was particularly helpful in clearing them a path.

"No reply to the ring." Crivelln stated the obvious. If the clone had been activated, this would have been an opportunity for Theo to show himself. The battle-hardened paladin was used to all manner of deception and contingency, and did not let down his guard for even a moment even if all seemed fairly obvious."With these cobwebs it means Theo hasn't emerged. It seems excessive for me to break this door down though." He rapped his knuckles on the door and prepared himself.

"I will continue to weigh the various possibilities in my head, as you know that is often my habit." Crivelln spoke to the others mentally in case they wondered why he had persisted in considering various options even though the most obvious interpretation had presented itself. The years he spent guarding against the forces of evil trained him to expect duplicity and illusion. As Avaris had said, the impossible had happened, which meant they could not be over certain of anything.

"Keep going. We didn't come here to demolish another building." If it were as Peregrine described, that this were a reverse tower of sorts, it would stand to reason that the sanctuary proper would be the room at the lowest level. When the clone body would have been kept though, would be somewhere else. All the same, it made sense to search all the levels.

Even to Silvanus' keen eye, aside from the masses of cobwebs choking the stairs, the tower is spotless - not one speck of dust rests on any surface, as though it had just been thoroughly cleaned. You cannot see evidence of any creature passing through the area. The cobwebs do not seem to be the product of neglect, and indeed you can see no spiders of any kind, but the webs that were burned away are already starting to reform across the upward stairs.

As the group descends further, a thick fog fills the stairway. You can follow the glow from the wildfire spirit as it burns through the webs, but even from a few feet away you can barely make out its shape. You can't even see the stairs beneath your feet. Cautiously, you proceed until you reach a second landing, with a door identical to the first. The stairs seem to continue downward at the end of the landing.

"Some sanctuary. Passive defences designed to keep intruders out." Crivelln appreciated the wards as necessary. It's just they did not have the right arcane abilities to negate them. All the same the paladin now took out his lantern. He used to deploy it as if it were a mini lighthouse, used to reveal hidden and invisible things.
OOC:
Crivelln will light his Lantern of Revealing as they proceed further down.

I will quickly go check Peregrine. Silvanus moves back and ask apprentice if most probable reason for webbing here is Thro defenses. Is it something his master would use fir protection? Ir would it rather hint of intruder left webs ... whatever reason be.
Then come back share info and go one lvl deeper.
Apr 3, 2022 9:43 am
Crivelln nodded in agreement. There was still much to be gleaned from speaking with the apprentice, as he had considered earlier. "We can all go. It doesn't look like time is of essence here. If Theo's clone were revived, he would've heard and responded by now. If not, either there is no activity in this sanctuary, or something else is happening."

"How are you getting along?" Peregrine asks as the adventurers re-emerge. After you ask about the magical defences, he nods and says, "Yes, that's about what I'd expect. Webs to impede progress, fog to disorient and conceal. I wouldn't be surprised to also find that some of the more important doors are glamoured to look like ordinary walls. Oh, and the magic will probably try to mess with your heads, so watch out that you don't find yourselves getting lost. The whole place probably isn't very big. That's just the passive stuff - if it was me, I'd also put in some spell traps to injure or confuse more powerful intruders who aren't dissuaded by the simpler wards."
Apr 3, 2022 3:09 pm
While Peregrine knew enough about Theobald's magic to be able to describe what the former archmage might use, he was obviously not powerful enough to be able to bypass them.

"Silvanus, if you are senses are able to pick them out, look for these doors. Also, we best analyse if we're going in circles. We need to mark the doors as we pass them." He looked at the others to see if they had anything to contribute before they went charging off again.
Apr 4, 2022 8:05 am
I would like to believe that new webbing my wildfire spirit is burning down proves we do not yet go in circles. Not yet. But it may be a good idea to stay close. turning back into spider Silvanus moves down again, but does it slowly checking all walls in attempt to discover hidden doors and to allow his spirit to burn webs just behind him
OOC:

I am also hoping that spider's blindsight out of range 10 foot will help against fog
By the way how much room are there in each landing? Would it be feasible turn into Huge beast (i.e. Mammoth) i.e. to try to break the doors out?
Apr 4, 2022 1:37 pm
OOC:
Crivelln is stronger than a mammoth, so you can save your wildshape for when we need it. :)
"Let's smash up Theo's sanctuary only if really necessary." Crivelln smiled.

I have nothing to save - lvl 20 is insane At 20th level, you can use your Wild Shape an unlimited number of times.
And it was not just about mamooth. With Shapechange spell my PC could assume form of any creature with CR up to 20
Anyhow I was only asking it OOC, my PC never mentioned that idea
Smash up? Are you about the webs I'm burning? Yeh sure no need to burn them. time has not helped Silvanus improving his sense of humour and he dismiss the spirit and continues in the spider form through the webs.

Oh yeah, gotta get used to the level 20 possibilities :) And no worries, perhaps Crivelln was speaking his thoughts aloud because he contemplated smashing them in himself as a means of investigating what was behind those doors, but held back from doing so because he didn't want to trigger anything unnecessarily.
"I was thinking about ways of gaining access to those rooms in the event that we do not find Theobald. But our priority is still to search throughout first for Theo's clone, and if necessary, go room by room if we fail to find him. Let's proceed."
Apr 6, 2022 11:16 am
"Peregrine, is this a different plane of existence, or where he is is that a different plane?" Avaris says was he writes a message on a piece of paper,

Theobald, I hope this finds you well, I am attempting to use this to find you, if you receive this message I am likely soon to follow behind.

Silvanus' spider form's blindsight will definitely help with the fog (out to ten feet, anyway) and will also "see" through simple illusions, so you should have no trouble navigating or finding glamoured doors. The landings are barely large enough for three humanoids to stand together, certainly much too small for a mammoth. :)

The webs, even when burned away, return very quickly - while you've been talking to Peregrine, the ones on the stairs you just came up have regenerated. You can't tell where you've been, let alone whether anyone else has come through.

Avaris, let's say you have one box of paper birds on you, with 1d6+3 sheets. You can get more whenever you have access to the rest of your assets.
As Avaris releases the paper bird, it flies up to the ceiling but then dramatically flares into ashes.

"No," Peregrine shakes his head sadly. "We are still on our native plane. Unless he has travelled to another plane himself - which is possible, though I can't think why he would - then that is not a good sign."

The three of you continue to explore the tower. You don't find any hidden doors, but the magical effects are definitely beginning to play with your minds - you get turned around, walking up stairs when you thought you were going down, even finding yourselves arguing with each other about which direction is down. Eventually, after what feels like a dozen flights of stairs, you reach the end of the staircase.

An imposing door, seemingly fashioned from mithril, waits at the end of the landing. Silvanus stops as the bricks in the wall next to him start to move, grinding together and parting to reveal something like a mouth formed of stone. It speaks in a deep, gravelly voice.

"INTRUDERS. I AM IMPRESSED THAT YOU HAVE MADE IT THIS FAR, BUT NOW PLAY TIME IS OVER. GO NO FURTHER. THIS IS YOUR FINAL WARNING."

Having delivered its message, the wall returns to normal.
Apr 6, 2022 3:00 pm
You foreseen. What would we smash, though? Doors or wall?
Apr 7, 2022 1:13 pm
Crivelln looked at Avaris' attempt to contact Theobald. The failure was not a good sign. "That means Theo isn't here is he?" He asked Avaris, just for confirmation. He then turned to both of them. "Is there any point in ransacking this place? Are we expecting to find clues and will tear down everything to do so?" He largely ignored the magic mouth that had spoken. If there were more wards and defences, then they had to be ready to breach them if they felt that there was something to learn here.
Apr 7, 2022 1:22 pm
"Yeah, it seems to mean he's not here that either he's hidden himself on another plane of existence because of some danger we don't know about or... like he said in the letter he's dead,"

I don't know what are you thinking, I will tear this tower down if that has even a slight chance to give clue how to return Theo's soul back to the world. Or figure out who or what killed Theo before that kills me or anyone I love.
As for Peringrine, if you suspect him, let's go kill him right now - we will be able resurrect him once out investigation is over. Do you need my help doing that? Just make sure his body is safe and put it into this bag.

Silvanus suggest Avaris a "Bag of Holding" (creature can't breath in it but a dead one will not need to, so this is absolutely safe "morgue".

"I'm not going to do things that are morally wrong just because Theo Died, I'm not somehow above the people just because we saved them, if Peregrine thinks that if people think him a risk they will kill him then he would seek to make himself as insignificant as possible, if I wanted the world to be a safe place for us to live, why I could just kill everything but that certainly doesn't make it right, I know for a fact that the babies of the Volcanic dragon are a risk yet I let them live, I have far less evidence that Peregrines is dangerous, yet if I even so much as entertain the possibility you suggest I kill him." Avaris say Telepathically for a moment he considers Including Peregrine in the conversation but decides against it, "I'm here to make rational decisions not to take action and then deal with the consequences later.

Hey, we both understand I don't talk killing, just suspending body activity for a period of time. All frogs do this during winter - what it has to do with morale? That was in any case just a suggestion how to help you with your worries, sorry if my suggestion do not fit your morale.
Anyhow, I'd like to concentrating on finding way to Theo clone now. Or clues to what happened to the clone, because it is almost evident that there was no clone when Theo died.
OOC:
I mean I want to use brute force on current situation, this place is the only clue. Unless this game was supposed some riddle/detective investigate game rather than DnD it is the most obvious thing for a PC to do, isn't it? Am I missing confusing anything as a player ?
Apr 7, 2022 3:02 pm
"If you think there is no clone then what he said is true..." Avaris says aloud "because there we're no remains left of his body...
However it is possible this person killed the clone as well, after all destroying the clone before it is out of the box is almost impossible"

Avaris think for some time before saying "We Still have to get in there if only to see what happened."

then he turns to address the door "I am no Intruder, I am a Friend of Theo's and I mean to enter, If you could talk to him he would let me enter right now."
then he waits not knowing if the door will respond in any way.
OOC:
I think we probably still should enter, but I'm not sure what all we will find, to me we're still in the Roleplaying stage where we are coming to the understanding that we can't get Theo back, the reason I haven't done more active investigation is because my abilities aren't very suited for that, and I would expect that I would let those with better suited abilities do what they can, that said all of us might not have abilities great for this sort of thing.
Apr 8, 2022 8:50 am
OOC:
We're missing a fourth PC after all, everything covered except for wizard.
Crivelln appreciated the strong views his friends had expressed. Their companion, whom they hadn't seen in a long time, had been killed. That was enough to make them want to get to the bottom of the matter, regardless of cost. "I agree with Silvanus' idea that we'll probably have to do what it takes to unearth whatever clues we hope to discover in order to solve Theo's death. His tower in Greyhawk gave us no leads. We only have this Santuary to investigate, either that or his apprentice to further interrogate. As far as we know, we have gotten all the information we can from Peregrine, assuming that that's truly all he knows or is revealing to us. That leaves this place. I don't want to destroy his property, but I can be persuaded that it's necessary to do so, otherwise we're at a dead end."

He waited to see if Avaris' speaking to the door had its desired effect. Perhaps the wards were keyed to recognise them.
OOC:
If not, we can try presenting our letters from Theo, or saying our names, etc
Apr 8, 2022 2:49 pm
OOC:
The game isn't intended as a detective adventure, no. The current mystery is more like a prologue setting up the central hook, but we should get to some action soon enough - I know that your characters are a lot more geared for combat than investigation. All I'm really doing in this bit is experimenting a bit with "If I was a high-level wizard with plenty of time to prepare, what spells would I cast to make a retreat that would keep most people out?"

I will suggest that everything of Theo's you've encountered so far, from the letters to the sanctuary's defences, has been entirely automated - Theo was very keen on magical contingencies for a range of circumstances. There's no guiding intellect behind the magic mouth (which just replayed its pre-recorded message) that you can bargain with for entry to the chamber beyond. Just so we avoid going back-and-forth trying to argue with a wall. ;)

Peregrine has seemed quite willing to help so far, but genuinely confused about why all this has occurred. You're fairly certain he's not being deceitful, but I'm sure there are some Paladin spells that would force him to reveal the truth if you want a definitive answer. If you decide to kill him, I'd suggest having a plan for how you're going to get out of here and find your own way back to Greyhawk!
There is no reaction to Avaris' plea.
Apr 8, 2022 3:57 pm
"You going to force your way in?" Avaris asks the others as he knows either of them could have far more success that he forcing their way in, Raw force had never been something he'd built up in fact he'd relied on people perceiving him as weak because of his muscles many times and missing him as a threat.

Crivelln. Time to smash up!
OOC:
Good to know it isn't intended as a detective adventure. I began to worry we need to get back to the city for more NPC interaction and information gathering.
Apr 9, 2022 1:56 pm
OOC:
I have no issue even if any part of the adventure were investigative, that wouldn't be out of place in any D&D game. Greyword I think your expectations of this game and mine might differ quite a bit! :)

I'll probably tweak Criv's prepared spells to include Locate Object / Locate Creature? And I've been assuming that these were all automated defences anyway, I think the DM's dropped enough descriptions for us to surmise that. My only relevant bit of RPing so far is in deciding whether it was justified to tear down a friend's house because he's dead.
Well, it's an archmage's sanctuary. Attack it and it'll fight back you know. It's already been trying to get rid of us." Crivelln stated the obvious with a hint of a smile. "Best step back and be prepared for the defences to act up again." Without other magic to counter Theobald's defences it meant they had to open the door the old fashioned way. Crivelln conjured up a spectral axe and began hewing at the door before him.
OOC:
Using Spiritual Weapon to 'attack' the door. Or if there's an object AC to ovecome I can start rolling. Or if there's a object damage threshhold I can start smiting instead.

OOC:
The door has AC 21 and 40 HP. It has no damage threshold, but is resistant to piercing and slashing damage. You can roll your attack!
As Crivelln's ethereal weapon slams home, the door's surface lights up. Magical energy in the form of glowing runes pulses out of it, condensing toward the centre and coalescing into a tiny, fiercely bright point of light.
Apr 10, 2022 1:35 pm
Crivelln was well prepared for the repercussions, but the first blow was very much a test, to see if anything more serious might result. It appeared that he wouldn't have to wait very long to see what that might be.
OOC:
If we don't want to play this out I can unleash all other actions as well. :) I've added those attacks and will include the following post.
Crivelln thought it best to quickly bring the door down before it could trigger anything further.
OOC:
12hp force damage, plus 32hp slashing halved to 16hp.

The solid metal slab buckles and warps under the force of Crivelln's blows. It shouldn't take much more to tear it from its frame.

The mote of light hangs in the space in front of the door as Crivelln works around it, growing brighter by the second.
Apr 11, 2022 8:53 am
Crivelln continued his hacking. If the bright light meant something, they were sure to find out about it soon enough. While his spectral weapon was effective against the door, Crivelln's greatsword was ill-suited to the task. If he knew that there was going to be demolishing of objects, he would've brought a maul or great hammer to smash his way through.
OOC:
I'll keep going! Unless anyone wants to do something else. Total 12hp force damage. The other attacks missed.

Silvanus simply steps back on the stairs to give more space to Crivelln mighty blows and turns into giant spider because he feel uncomfortable in human form among webbing. Eventually he decides to watch for anything that could endanger them from the upstairs.
Apr 12, 2022 3:27 pm
A second blow from the divine axe rends the door off its hinges. As it falls, the mote of light flares impossibly bright and then explodes in a ball of flame.
OOC:
Everyone within 20 feet of the door is hit by the fireball - DC 21 Dexterity save for half damage. I'm assuming Silvanus has moved far enough up the stairs that he's not in range.

Just for fun, let's assume spider is exactly 20 feet from the door.
Because druid in lvl 20 could cast spells in wildshape
Silvanus cast casting Absorb Elements as reaction to get 14 damage (57/2/2) to the giant spider. Spider is partially burned at 10/26 HP, but still standing when fire is gone just as webbing around spider :)

Both Avaris and Silvanus get +5 on your saves due to Crivelln's Aura of Protection, 30ft range.
Crivelln knew that his divine aura would keep his friends safer from the full brunt of the explosion, whereas he had positioned himself to bear the entire blast of the fireball he knew was inevitably coming.
OOC:
Crivelln takes 57hp damage.

Yes, don't forget about Aura of Protection - that bonus means Avaris emerges unscathed.
The persistent fog near you is temporarily evaporated by the fire, though it begins creeping back almost immediately. You barely catch a glimpse of the chamber beyond the door before it is once again shrouded, but you do have time to note a large, ornate sarcophagus.
Apr 13, 2022 2:40 pm
"Thank you, now let us proceed to see if the clone has for some reason not yet been activated. Watch for traps." Crivelln led the way, bearing his illuminating lantern in one hand, sword in the other.
OOC:
Recover 15hp

Avaris takes a quick glance around before continuing, if he can figure out where the fireball came from perhaps they can be better prepared for anything else that assaults them.

Just as Crivelln is about to step over the threshold of the room, Avaris' hand on his shoulder stops him in place. In the light from the Lantern of Revealing, a shimmering symbol spreads across the floor of the chamber, so faint and fine as to be almost invisible while it lies dormant.

Avaris has seen its like before. Death.
Apr 14, 2022 6:51 am
Crivelln saw the near invisible outline of the symbol at the same time as when Avaris laid a warning hand on him. That was the moment to give Silvanus' pause on his wildfire spirit as well, for it wasn't fire they had to deal with now, but a sigil of death.

Crivelln looked more carefully to see if the symbol would affect the entire room they were about to enter.
OOC:
With Avaris' roll, would he be able to tell whether the entire room would be affected by the sphere's effects?
Apr 14, 2022 7:52 am
When Silvanus see that Crivelln ignore his suggestion to send spirit to trigger any other magical attacks (because spirit is renewable resource) he sends spirit back up the stairs to burn any webs that may want to spread their way.

When Silvanus see silent communication between friends he send tepehatic question to sends "What's wrong?"
OOC:
As far as I understand Silvanus don't understand why Crivelln is stopped in the doorway by Avaris. He do not see the shimmering symbol yet and even if see then only Avaris recognise it.
Apr 14, 2022 8:37 am
"Sigil of death inscribed on the floor." Crivelln replied. While he had understood Silvanus' methods, having been teammates for so many years, Crivelln continued to marvel at the differences in their approach.
OOC:
Haha, another playstyle difference! I don't see Crivelln as treating summoned creatures as renewable resources. Crivelln can summon a celestial, but he would treat that celestial as an ally, just like how he has named his pegasus from Find Greater Steed.

@BedzoneII
The difference in play style i see is this: until DM say that Crivelln knows this is "Sigil of death" your PC can't claim it. It was only Avaris who did recognize it

As for attitude to summons - it is not a play-style it is a role play I choose for the particular PC. I have done it different for different PCs
[ +- ] Some details
Apr 14, 2022 11:02 am
"Death" The Word Immediately goes out through Avarris's Mind Transmitting to Crivelln who is in danger, he takes the time to point out the Symbol to Crivelln and then Turns back to Silvanus, "A Sigil of Death This Direction may just be a trap, however it looks like we're encountering some of the strongest wards which I would expect to be placed at the entrance." looking carefully for a way around Avaris takes a look from every angle moving himself on to the ceiling of the hallway so he can get a better look a the ceiling of the other room without straining his neck and so on Investigating from every angle before proceeding, there must be some way around this, flight? walking on walls? even just going around, that or a way Theo would have disarmed when he was headed through.

OOC:
I have edited to delete 'death' from my post. I will however point out that it is Crivelln who owns the Lantern of Revealing which reveals invisible creatures, and it is the DM's perogative whether it also reveals near-invisible things like a Symbol spell. If the DM were to play it RAW, only an Investigation check would reveal it, so Avaris the PC can't claim it either. I do not agree that this is a play style issue, but a DM perogative issue. I do agree with your correction though, and have corrected myself unless the DM says otherwise.

Your comment 'renewable resource' leads me to understand that it is a play style issue and not a role-play issue. But thank you for your further clarification in your further explanation. It is a play style issue because one of the ways to treat summon creatures is as expendable resources, to be cast and recast to serve exploration. It is the equivalent of sending minions, henchmen, etc to trigger traps, wards, what we call cannon fodder. I did not only specify Find Greater Steed but also Summon Celestial. It is a role play issue if you presented some role-playing with your wildfire spirit. I only now know about your roleplay details from your additional note explaining your previous experience with warlocks, paladins and druids.

I think for a PbP game it's fine to assume that anything which is "open knowledge" is available to all the characters (especially when everybody is telepathic) - it helps keep the game moving when people don't have to wait for their character to be told stuff the player already knows.
While you can't see the entire room due to the fog, the size and extent of the Symbol seems like it would cover a large area - most if not all of the room, assuming it's a similar size to the portal room.
