Thanks Greyword, I appreciate very much making new gaming friends, whether at a real life gaming table, or over PbP, and I definitely appreciate different playstyles and different expectations.
Like you I also responded to our DM's ad for the game, but I did not focus on the proposed pace of the game. This is because in much of my PbP experience here, games inevitably pick up or slow down depending on player and DM schedule. So I am now a little concerned if there are times at which my pace might not fulfil your expectations. Kadeton, I'd like to express that I have not felt the pace to be slow nor problematic at all, but I respect Greyword's view of course. I do feel though, that Greyword has been, consciously or otherwise, been trying to push the pace forward. For exampke, Silvanus acts first ahead of the other two PCs at each juncture. I would normally attribute that to characterisation, but now that I understand Greyword better, I understand that that might be his playstyle, to try to 'get through' each encounter efficently and quickly.
I did not think to bring this approach to this game. Again, going by our DM's ad, I read the invitation as an exploration of what a level 20 character would do, eg they have many powers at their disposal, many social responsibilties, unlimited resources, much political clout, etc, to quote Kadeton's ad. So I am expecting some degree of world-involvement and role play, not so much 'what power do I have to dispel Peregrine's bubble', 'how do I cure his blindness', 'how shall I best burn cobwebs and hack a door down'. So my PC choices so far have involved trying to rally the city, speaking with the mayor, evaluating whether Peregrine ought to be trusted, debating whether to destroy the sanctuary, etc, things like that. For example, I would use Crivelln's power and influence to go back out, recruit a bunch of mages, and come back to dispel the sanctuary's defences. I would try to figure out why Theo still has the dragon heart. It may sound strange, but I can't imagine trying to hack the door down to be honest, because it isn't some lich's fortress for Crivelln to destroy. It's something a lvl 5-10 PC in a dungeoncrawl would do, and I didn't expect to play a level 20 the same way but with bigger traps and bigger damage. If Theo's clone were active, he would've made himself known already.
So because it's just the prologue, I have not felt that the PCs have been doing the 'wrong' things. But I confess I might be wrong here, that the game our DM has been trying to run is one I'm not playing properly in because I haven't figured out what this PbP table entails. I guess that's what session 0s are for.
GreyWord says:
I play DnD because I want to imagine being a PC ready to risk his life, having unique powers/spell casting and involved in exploring unknown. I'm fine having some small-talk between PCs, intrigues and solving problems, but this is what I do in my Life anyway - I don't need to play DnD to do that.
I admit though that while I agree wholeheartedly with Greyword on the first point, I completely differ with him on the second in what I imagine a game could be. So Greyword, you might be right in saying we could be a wrong match of players. If so, then I apologise in advance to all here that we might find it hard to play together moving forward because of our different preferences. And to borrow what Greyword observes, I have deadlines to meet in real life, and do not wish to also have to worry about a daily deadline to meet in my recreational gaming as well.
