Character Creation

Jun 18, 2016 4:35 pm
Welcome to Gamer's Plane!!

This thread is for discussing what type of characters you'd like to play and how to go about creating them. For those new to either D&D 5E and/or Gamer's Plane I have a thread that may help a bit in one of my other games (which is being run for a few people that are completely new to RPGs and PbP): Szemely's Character Creation Guide

For this game anything in the Player's Handbook or Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide is fair game. Attributes should be rolled in this forum so that we can all congratulate you on your awesome luck or mock your newly created sickly character.

1. Using the GP die roller, roll 7x4d6, for each roll throw out the single lowest value. From the seven totals left, throw out the lowest total and assign the six values in anyway that you'd like.

2. If after step one your rolls are pretty miserable, feel free to use the standard array of 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8, and assign them anyway you'd like.

You should also determine why your character is in Neverwinter and how they know Gundren Rockseeker and establish any relationships with other PCs.

If you have any questions at all, feel free to post them here, and we'll get you sorted.

Thanks for playing!

Alright, here we go!

Rolls

4d6

(3623) = 14

4d6

(5346) = 18

4d6

(2226) = 12

4d6

(4362) = 15

4d6

(2153) = 11

4d6

(1615) = 13

Jun 18, 2016 6:44 pm
So 12, 15, 10, 13, 10 and 12. Pretty close to standard, actually.
Jun 18, 2016 6:45 pm
Add one more roll if you'd like. We're doing 7x4d6 and dropping the lowest total.
Jun 18, 2016 6:47 pm
Well, that's new!

Rolls

4d6

(6325) = 16

Jun 18, 2016 6:52 pm
I've seen a couple of other DMs do it while running games on here and I thought it was kind of neat, so I, "borrowed" the idea.

For those who have submitted characters I'm going to reject them and have you go through the creation process in this thread.
Jun 18, 2016 7:26 pm
Well I'm down to make what ever. I'm kinda leaning towards a wizard or multi clashing wizard with something. That's as long as multi-tasking is allowed.
Jun 18, 2016 7:31 pm
If it's in the PHB or SCAG then you're good to.
Jun 18, 2016 8:46 pm
I'm kinda leaning towards a cleric.
Jun 18, 2016 11:23 pm
Looks like we may have a Fighter, Cleric, and a multi-classing Wizard so far. Good mix... :-)
Jun 18, 2016 11:46 pm
Ok. Submitted my character. Now just brainstorming the backstory. I've got ideas, but I gotta put them together.
Jun 18, 2016 11:49 pm
You need to roll up the stats on this thread like Sampai has before I'll accept a new character. I guess I wasn't clear enough about that, sorry. I'll update the top post.
Jun 18, 2016 11:52 pm
So how do I roll the stats?
Jun 18, 2016 11:55 pm
Link in the top post will take you to a little step by step guide I'm working on: Szemely's Character Creation Guide

That guide shows the 6x4d6 method, but we're using the 7x4d6 as described above. If you have any questions along the way feel free to ask.
Jun 18, 2016 11:56 pm
Ah. Ok.

Rolls

4d6

(6643) = 19

(3446) = 17

Stat - (4d6)

(1332) = 9

Jun 18, 2016 11:58 pm
So go plug these stats into my toon?
Jun 19, 2016 12:00 am
Yep, just adjust the values as described above and use them as your starting stats.
Jun 19, 2016 12:02 am
Do I add my racial bonus and can I use the human feat start build?
Jun 19, 2016 12:05 am
Yep, what you rolled is just for starters. Add any racial bonuses that you get for your race selection (and you can use the human variant build if you'd like).
Jun 19, 2016 12:07 am
Ok. Plugged in the new stats. Hope everything is in order.
Jun 19, 2016 12:08 am
Thank you😄
Jun 19, 2016 12:14 am
OddEyesGardevoir says:
Ok. Plugged in the new stats. Hope everything is in order.
Almost....

I approved your character, but you'll need to adjust the stats. From the top thread - "for each roll throw out the single lowest value", so your six highest stats are 16, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 15. Go ahead and adjust them and I'll take a closer look over the sheet.

*facepalm* oh yeah....

OK. Now it should be good. I also remembered the bonuses from my race, so the stats should be in order.

Jun 19, 2016 12:34 am
Just submitted character 😃 I'm so excited
Jun 19, 2016 12:34 am
OddEyesGardevoir - adjusted your attack/damage bonus on your crossbow (you shorted yourself a +1) other than that, everything looks good.

Everyone - Start thinking about why your character is in Neverwinter and how they've come to know (or recently have met) Gundren Rockseeker. Do any of your characters no each other?
Jun 19, 2016 12:45 am
Windstead: I've approved Dayvon, but you'll need to adjust the stats a bit. From your rolls you should have started (after dropping the lowest roll from each) with:

14, 13, 16, 9, 13, and 14.

With the Variant Human Traits you'll get the Healer feat and you'll get to add +1 to any two of your stats. So go ahead and adjust your stats when you get a chance and I'll take a closer look at your sheet then.
Jun 19, 2016 12:48 am
Colten takes a look at his coin purse, and counts 110 gold coins. Waterdhavian nobility must travel in style, after all.

Confused I rolled a 15,15,18,11,14,17,9 so I drop the 9 and I'm left with 11 str, 18 dex, 15+1=16 con, 14int, 17+1=18wis, 15chr how do I adjust these to be right?

My charter is a human herbalist and Doctor. I sell potions and do medical treatment for those who can't afford the magical kind. Gundren asked me to come be to phandelver to offer my self to the community as the expanding community is In Need of good medical attention. if any one wants to say they know me lets chat and figure out how you do 😄

You have to subtract the lowest die from each of the 4d6 rolls as well. In roll20 terms, it is /r 4d6dl1, or roll 4d6, drop lowest one.

My name is Delg Cavedelver, I'm a Dwarf wizard. Me parents hailed from Mirabar, and on the rare occasion Gundren would visit our fine city. Word was about, Gundren is a fine adventure, finding only the best to sell in the cites along the sword coast. Ever since i was a wee lad I wanted to be like Gundren, me parents were proud of my choice of mentor. When I was of age, I asked Gundren how I could be like him and he mentioned that If he were able to do it better magic is a great way to find treasure to trade. Not a lot of dwarf wizards, but I was able to seek out a wizard willing to train me. After I got my training as a wizard I set off to Neverwinter. I am new to being a wizard and an adventure, so i need to seek out Gundren or companions to help me start my journey.

I wasn't a very strong dwarf, str only being 5. Its the reason wizardry was my choice.
Jun 19, 2016 1:31 am
"Perhaps you should lift more weights.", Colten eyes the dwarf incredulously.
OOC:
Wait, aren't your stats 11,15,10,15,12 (drop the 5)?

Well i could take the 11 and 10 but I thought it would be fun to have a flaw to my character.

As long as its all ok with the gm

Luka never knew her parents. She was born from the union of a elf mother of a noble house, and a traveling bard father. Her mother's family never approved of the pairing, and banished them from the family. The two lovers did not despair tho. They believed they were brought together by fate. They found sanctuary in a church for the goddess of beauty and love, Sune. A few years later, the couple would meet their death at the hands of a raid party on a traveling path in between Mirabar and Luskan. Their only daughter, 8 year old Luka, miraculously survived. Scared, and alone she hid in the wreckage of her parents, and prayed that help would come. Her prayers would be answered in the form of a caravan who was on their way to Luskan. Luka was left in the care of a small, and unkempt orphanage in the outskirts of town. Life continued to be hard for Luka as she, and her 10 younger siblings had no choice but to live under the harsh conditions they found themselves in, but Luka's faith held strong that her parents undying love would protect her. After a few more years, a 16 year old Luka was bringing food back to the orphanage when she spotted a familiar looking banner in the distance. She recognized it as the banner of the raiding party that had killed her parents years ago. She suddenly broke into a sprint as she burst into the orphanage, and began rounding up the children, and fled into the city. As she and the children ran, she turned back to see the old orphanage burning. Had she been minutes slower...

The raiding party was soon driven away, but not until they had caused havoc to the city. Luka, for the first time, felt blind rage. She was angry with the city's slow response to the attack, lack of help for the orphans, and even their living situation for years before. This anger turned to fear and concern, and then into determination when she looked at her siblings. She loved them more than anyone else in the world. She gripped her holy symbol of Sune, and got to work. She spent all her money to buy a wagon, rations, and made the long, hard journey to Neverwinter. Upon reaching Neverwinter, she secured a home for the orphans in the form of the much nicer establishment of the private Neverwinter orphanage. She even gained employment with the orphanage to help raise her siblings, and the children already there.

Although the location is different, life still is not that easy. A now 23 year old Luka has taken up many odd jobs to help support the orphanage. Whether it be becoming a maid for a noble, giving sermons for her church, or helping caravans with her powers bestowed upon her by her god, Luka does it all in the name of love. One day, while looking around the jobs board, she came in contact with Gundren Rockseeker. The kind, but gruff dwarf knew of her abilities, and offered her a job as a wagon escort. As always she was hesitant about about potentially dangerous jobs, but she knew any form of income would help the orphans. Luka agreed to take the job, and returned home to get ready. With her equipment, holy symbol, and small farewell to the children, she headed out to meet her compatriots, and lend them her full support.

ok submitted, looking for character approval. If anything needs to be changed or you need more i'll be happy to do so.

Luca love the back story you and I could know each other. as I often provide medicine to the orphanage and tend to minor injuries when the kids play to ruff

Are you a stickler for spell components?
Jun 21, 2016 9:28 pm
As long as you have a component pouch I won't pay much attention to components. The only exception to this if for spells that consume their components or have components that cost more than say 50GP.
Jun 22, 2016 2:27 pm
Oh because my barbarian has the magic initiate feat and can cast 2 cantrips and a first level spell. Do you mind if I buy a component pouch even though we have already began?
Jun 22, 2016 2:34 pm
Not a problem.

Well I'm a wizard not totally sure who's still playing and what they are.
Sep 16, 2016 2:02 pm
I'm deciding between melee or ranged, in reality. With that stat line, though, melee seems the more helpful bet (as I can have good Str, Dex and Con without sacrificing my classes tertiary stat - Wis). Stay turned for a great weapon fighting half-orc demon hunter ;)
Sep 17, 2016 3:04 pm
Etch 'awoke' in the middle of a hunt, aware of himself suddenly as a beast of the night lunged for his then-master and creator. His awakening slowed his response, which should have been swift and automatic, to interpose himself between the beast and hunter. Instead, he stood awkwardly as the werewolf slammed, claws and teeth first, into the hunter. The hunter dead, the mongrel turned towards the awakened-automaton and charged. Ten seconds conscious and Etch killed a werewolf.

His master and creator dead, Etch had little to guide him forward. The hunter's pack contained a collection of books detailing a variety of night terrors, their habitats, hunting patterns, and physiology. There was a writ, sealed with wax, from which Etch learned they were beast hunters, with sanction from the local lord to do what they must to save the villages of his realm from werebeasts.

Etch continued the hunt. One particularly evasive beast drew him well beyond the borders of the land the writ, but as Etch knew nothing of sovereign territory, this fact never occurred to him. Eventually, he found himself in Neverwinter. Their reaction was less than friendly, and the stoic warforged took to wearing a hood to conceal his metal face. While seeking a purpose, Etch found a posting that had recently been removed from a job board and discarded to the waste, a worn note asking for assistance. It was, as with the writ that had previously guided his purpose, eloquently inked upon paper. This, he decided, meant it was a formal request for aid. A new task in hand, he set out on the road to Phandalin to find this 'Gundrin Rockseeker' and assist him in whatever way was possible.
Sep 17, 2016 7:41 pm
For character introduction purposes you could have Etch walk into the Stonehill Inn as the others are waking.

Your character has been approved. Since you're playing a halfling I can write you in right at the Alderleaf farm, if you'd like, as a possible acquaintance of Qellin. (Unless you have some other way you'd like to go about it - just let me know)
Sep 27, 2016 2:43 am
Possibly as a nephew or the like. See possible background below.

Cori grew up starving on the streets of Neverwinter. At age 10, the young halfling snuck his way into a caravan on prospectors bound for the village of Phandelin. When Qellin caught the Cori trying to filch food from her farm, she adopted him and took him under her wing. While her tender care was able to tame his wild ways, the fury that allowed him to survive the streets was still resting far below the surface.

Freshly turned 15, Cori is foolish and endlessly curious. The young halfling is always ready for an adventure whether it be climbing the hills around the Alderleaf farm or exploring caves around Phandelin.

Sorry for the delay, everyone. Got caught up in some real life gaming yesterday that carried on longer than I thought.

@Elttat: I like it! I'll bring Carp out and you can follow right along behind him and introduce yourself how you see fit.

You do not have permission to post in this thread.
