Actual gameplay coming soon
The game works as follows, roll a d6 and draw a card. Based on the result of the die roll and the suit/value of the card write down a response to the prompt you are given. (I used my actual dice for this.)
*As an aside, I created ad hoc tables for this game by assigning numbers to the examples listed in the rules for the suits of cards. For example, there were 12 ideas listed for Diamonds, so I rolled a 1d12 went with the random suggestion.
First draw/roll: 6 of diamonds - roll = 2
Diamonds are - treasure and useful items (a roll of 6 on my ad hoc table was "weapons")
A roll of 1-2 - you find it whilst slowly exploring
The entrance to the dungeon was obvious, as there was a surprising well-worn track that led directly to the crevice that acted as the doorway. Silence greeted me, save for the natural ambient sounds that would have been present anyway, but I tripped over something ominous as I slowly made my approach. A very decayed corpse lay in the weeds off to the right of the path, the body was all but decomposed, but a perfectly good dagger was still on what was left of the body. I wasn't sure what to make of the fact that no one had helped themselves to the blade, despite the bearer having long since been dead.
Second draw/roll: 4 of diamonds - roll = 3
Diamonds are - treasure and useful items ( a roll of 9 on my ad hoc table was "light sources")
With a weapon at my side, I felt a bit better about my odds, but the darkness within always stresses me out a bit. It's not the first time I've made my way into the depths, but just the same, it's not something to undergo lightly. As luck would have it, there was another body further in. They had torches with them, and while they weren't quite as decayed, they hadn't fared better. Despite my good fortune of finding useful resources, I wasn't feeling like the odds were with me. Maybe not even the gods, although that remained to be seen. Two corpses before I'd even entered the dungeon and things were looking bleak. At least I'd be able to see with the torches.
Third draw/roll: 2 of hearts - roll of 5 (roll of 5 means "you find it through a trail, sound or smell)
Hearts are - creatures found in the dungeons (a roll of 7 on my ad hoc table was "strange lifeforms")
The light didn't make my trip much better. A short while on, I'd start seeing something almost drain itself from the walls, and then be re-absorbed by the stone on the opposite side of the corridor. It wasn't my first time in a poorly lit passageway, but I told myself that the light was playing tricks on my eyes. I knew better. I'd one this too many times, and as I slowly crept, further along, the form kept moving from one side to another, and always too far to make contact with. I was definitely unsettled, and I'd never heard of anything like this before, certainly not in connection with this particular dungeon. The bodies just outside made me wonder though if I wouldn't be joining this as my "companion" kept pace with me.
Fourth draw/roll A of Clubs - roll of 1 (roll of 1 means "you find it whilst exploring)
Clubs are - peculiarities of the dungeon (a roll of 8 on my ad hoc table was "pillars")
The further on I walked, the more I tried to ignore my companion. It was more important to try and take in as much as I could, despite the fact that I knew I was being watched. Running my hands along the walls, I felt small grooves, and textures that weren't rough-hewn stone. Instead, they felt like they could even be words, and I noticed that the path I'd been on was opening up revealing pillars that served as a sort of corridor. "Interesting, I thought to myself. "This corridor must have a purpose or at least did at some point. Then I thought back to my watcher, and shuddered a bit at what that realization might entail.
Fifth draw/roll 5 of Clubs - roll of 1 (roll of 1 means "you find it whilst exploring)
Clubs are - peculiarities of the dungeon (a roll of 1 on my ad hoc table was "pillars")
I kept my search going, intrigued by what I'd found. However, as I continued, I'd accidentally depressed some sort of switch,..."uh oh." "This was it," I thought. "I'm done for." Then, to my surprise, the symbols I'd felt etched in the wall rotated themselves. I felt myself recoil in surprise. Now, I didn't know what I was looking at, or if the information I thought I'd found was reliable. "Was this some sort of puzzle? A joke?" I was thoroughly confused but relieved to not be dead.
Fifth draw/roll 9 of Spades - roll of 4 (roll of 1 means "you find it whilst following a map made by a previous delver")
Spades are - hazards of a dungeons (a roll of 7 on my ad hoc table was "vile smells")
The fun didn't stop there though. A short distance further and a vile smell reached my nose. I'd been following the map I'd received before setting out on this trip, and it led me to an olfactory nightmare. Worst of all, I couldn't pinpoint the origin of the stench, and my shadowy watcher gave me second thoughts about how I went about looking the the source of the stench I resolved myself to suffer through it, but it was absolutely putrid I could only hope I wasn't breathing in some kind of poison.
