I think the reason that it wasn't editable is that the searchable dropdowns (combobox) really hate angular binding.

You can have dropdowns where you can type, or dropdowns that remember settings, but not both.

The - and -- indicators of nesting could. maybe. be clearer, but I tend to name my sub-sub-forums in ways that make recognising them easy, even without the hierarchy visible.
