Laurent looked back at Jenks, discreetly. The prices the gnomish scrivener expected for the scrolls were beyond his range, but the young man tried to dissimulate his lack of means with a slight air of indifference.

"How may I address you, Master Scrivener?" he stated, opening what he hoped might be a fruitful exchange. "Some of your wares are of interest to me, though I wonder if you are only interested in gold as a means of payment?"

Scrivener
The scrivener stops writing and peers down at Laurent from their perch. Silently the gnome tosses a piece of parchment down to you.

Have you anything to offer that's dearer than gold?

As soon as you read it, the paper disappears in a wisp of sulfurous smoke.

Though he is surprised by the silent method of communication chosen by the Scrivener, Laurent attempted to display as little emotion as possible.

"Far more precious," he stated, "though nothing displayed here would be worth such an exchange. Services, or information, perhaps? Knowledge is far more precious than gold, in the right hands. And every scrivener has tasks that need taking care of."

The scrivener is neither deaf nor mute. Maybe they just really love to write. The gnome cackles with delight at Laurent's words. Eyes a-glitter as another note is penned and allowed to float down to you.

Knowledge. Information. Secrets! Yes.

What secrets would you share with Sablefrimbiddle and Sablefrimbiddle alone?

As Berry and Squiddly leave the silk merchant's stall, something very strange happens. Berry's head swims for a few moments and then everything comes into incredibly clear focus! It's a little disorienting at first—his vision seems strangely segmented at the edges—but then he realizes those edges now extend almost all the way behind him! As if he had eyes that wrapped around most of his head—like those of a dragonfly!

"Ya alright, boss?" Squiddly asks.
OOC:
Berry temporarily has advantage on sight-based Perception rolls. You don't know how long the effect will last.

We're going to move on. Whenever @matmaisan comes back, he can post his responses to the Scrivener.

But now the question is whether you're resting before heading down into the nasty pits. It is now around 8:00 in the evening.

"I could give you an impeccable account relating to the criminal activities of a certain notable, and his clashes with not one, but two rival factions in the Harborside district, for instance, he stated discretely, looking about to make sure they were not being overheard.

Sablefrimbiddle
The scrivener rolls his eyes, lazily pens another note, and pushes it your way.

Booooring!

Albeit not worthless, this currency will gain you little. Give Sablefrimbiddle something truly scandalous about this personage! Or better yet, about yourself!

The parchment doesn't vanish this time, but is wiped blank when you finish reading. Sablefrimbiddle sends down his quill and a floating inkpot. It appears you are meant to write the secret (or secrets)!

Berry rubs his eyes, "Oh, yes, fine." He's a little disconcerted but he doesn't reveal to Squiddly what he's experiencing but will find a quiet moment with Laurent and Tilma to explain what's happening.

Sablefrimbiddle
You all find Laurent at the scrivener's podium. The gnome looks over you all greedily from his high perch. The next message reads:

Come, spill your guts to Sablefrimbiddle!

More secrets buy you more magic!

Sablefrimbiddle wiggles a spell scroll tantalizingly.

OOC:
Anybody got any embarassing secrets? Just make some up. More creative = higher value. 😉

OOC:
Berry does not want to get involved. He knows the value of secrets and where they can get you if getting in the wrong hands. He keeps his own to himself.

OOC:
Fair enough. What about Tilma and Laurent?

Meta: Yes, those scrolls would come in handy if you had them. No, they're not necessary to achieving your goal here.

Laurent observed the proffered sheet of paper with a perplexed air as he scrutinized the script. His brows knotted somewhat, as his lips were pursed in an expression of slight displeasure. He took the quill, and began scribbling. After a few moments, he handed the sheet back.
Quote:
Sablefrimbiddle is not interested in a child slavery ring being run by a well-known personage of this great City? What titillates one man might leave a sagacious gnome indifferent. The source of the recent earthquake: would that be a matter of interest to a Master Scrivener?
He observed the gnome's reaction politely. He did not expect this to be a matter of interest, and was preparing himself to leave empty handed.
OOC:
Laurent could possibly string this conversation over many exchanges, but given my time constraints it might be wiser for us to drop this particular line of inquiry. Not sure Laurent wants to reveal anything truthful; I toyed with the idea of providing a completely false account of Bartoz' doings — with enough scandal to pique this gnome's curiosity — but I fear that might also open us to additional threats.

OOC:
Sure, let's skip it.
Nothing's gained from the scrivener but you have your gear and the determination to forge ahead. Squiddly draws you a crude map of the route you're to navigate. The three urchins salute you and scurry off to conduct their own search around the Night Market.

With that, you begin your descent into the Nasty Pits.

Our adventure continues in Chapter 4: The Nasty Pits.
