[Moon] Caught In the Middle

Apr 12, 2022 7:55 am
The city is full of color, voices of people murmuring, discussing, shouting, in fact outright living when Rauka was away from all those trouble. Duty awaits. She was in the middle of another standard pen-testing, already got in. Although the job was dull, the location was a bit unusual this time. Usually she was tasked with breaking into official places to ensure their security. There were some out of the ordinary jobs, of course but this one seemed particularly odd as it was a regular house. Nothing fancy, nothing official, just (apparently) the residence of someone. It's a two floor building, Rauka standing in the first. Although a bit disorganized, nothing unusual catches Rauka's eye.
OOC:
Let's go! I left that "replacing a red coin with a blue one" issue intentionally open. You can decide what did your client wanted you to replace here, or even they did or did not want something like that.
Apr 12, 2022 4:00 pm
Rauka had spent some time beforehand scoping the house, spotting patterns and noticing weaknesses in the security of the house. She even had her familiar give the house an areal sweep. Now the flying serpent was coiled around her neck.

She takes out a red coin and places it at a high pile of books. This is their normal procedure, never the less, she continues toward the second floor.
OOC:
When doing pentesting the defenders are often called "blue team" while the hackers are called "red teams", hens the color coding of the coins. Its importen not to steel anything, but to show that you have been there
Apr 12, 2022 4:41 pm
As you go upstairs, the stench of something horrific fills your nose and lungs. Only your dwarven constitution prevents you from coughing or outright puking. The upstair room is smaller than the entrance with only an uncomfortable looking bed with a single table. In the middle of the room lies a young dwarven man. It's impossible to understand if the body has been there for quite some time or just that the weather is so hot that it stinks. When you get closer, you notice a familiar necklace. This man belonged to Clan Orothiar, maybe the biggest rival of Clan Kundarak. The blood on the body is dry and it stained the wooden floor.
OOC:
Just to let you know I've only taken the name of the clan from Forgotten Realms wiki. I don't intend to use its official features.
Apr 13, 2022 5:00 am
Crag! This is way beyond the normal. Clan Orothiar are jerks at the best of times, but killing?
Rauka retreats taking the same path back as she got in.

Out on the street, she looks around for a member of the law, a Shield. How should she handle this? Let the Shields handle the dead body and all that, while she and her house representative investigate this false assignment?

While out of sight, she uses her Masquerade Tattoo to activate the Disguise Self ability. Looking like a teenage human girl, she approaches a Shield.
Sir, excuse me, sir? I was over by this house you see and smelled something bad. You know like when a piece of meat has been left out in the sun for days? Do you think someone died in there? She gives him the address and hopes he will take care of the dead body problem.

The shield you were talking to listens to you calmly, giving her attention to you fully. When you finish she turns to her partner and says "See that, Planko? The citizens of this city are good." As she approaches the house, her partner keeps an eye on you to make sure you don't run away. The shield inspects the house and its surroundings. Smells the air, then grimaces. She comes back and thanks you for informing them. Then she says to Planko "Little girl is right. Something stinks there. Let's see if we can identify who lives there. We can't just barge into the place but things will be a lot easier if we can get a clearance." They now completely lost interest in you, discussing how should they approach this issue as they continue patrolling.
Apr 16, 2022 3:20 pm
Good, now for my investigation The teenage girl slips off now the guards are distracted.

She goes into a shop, drops the magical disguise and returns to the street as Rauka. She is headed directly to House Kundarak head office to find Matron Talaraka.

Rauka enters her office and gives a respectfull salute. Matron Talaraka, we have a problem

Matron Talaraka
Now girl, be specifik. Are you having a problem that you think involves me, or the house. Or do you know?

We... Rauka points to herself and then Talaraka. ...took a pentesting contract to evaluate the security of [insert adress here]. It looked a bit odd as it was a worndown residential residens, but that could have been a clever cover. I got in easy enough, but on the second floor I found a dead member of Clan Orothiar. I think we are being setup. I summoned the guards to take care of the body. I wanna know who asked us to investigate the adress

Matron listens to you carefully, becoming slightly more confused and worried with each word. When you ask about who gave you the job, she walks towards one of the shells, pulling out a large binder. This is one of the many binders in House Kundarak that solely exists to keep record of official business. "You said that house, right?" she murmurs as he goes through it. It takes her quite a bit of time to check the records, or she seems to do it again and again. Finally, she lifts her head up.

Matron Talaraka
"Darling, there are no records of us comissioning you to that adress. How did you receive this mission exactly?"
OOC:
Let me know if you want me to continue the story myself instead of you answering that question. I like keeping some things open ended and let players decide in crucial moments like these. It's easier in PbP as I can easily edit the post later should you want me to decide it rather than coming up with it on your own.
Apr 17, 2022 7:49 am
You were out, but as many times before, you had left me instructions and I started my stakeout and assessment of the house exterior. It would seem that someone has found a weakness in our security.
Who has access and what would their motive be?
Apr 17, 2022 9:07 am
Matron Talaraka
"Oh, so you say we were pen-tested ouselves? You know this place as much as I do, let's check here to see if anything is misplaced or are there any signs of intrusion."

As she finishes her words you start to investigate the place. The room you're in right now is the head office, with a door connecting it to outside and a few windows on the sides. There is a big table behind which Talaraka was sitting and a big shelve containing lots of documents and books. You trace your own steps, approach the situation like you would if you were to intrude here. First you check the instruction paper. At first glance it's exactly how it should be with the handwriting and stuff but when you look a bit closer you realize it's a bit too perfect. You reach one of the shelves to compare this instruction with previous ones. That's when you realize one of the papers seems off. You always fold it exactly twice with complete overlap but this one has some additional wrinkles and folding signs you're not used to. When you compare this odd one with your cuurrent instruction you realize every word in these papers exactly match with all the little details one puts into writing. People are usually not that perfect when it comes to handwriting, you can observe lots of different styles on one person's writings. You and Matron discuss this.

Matron Talaraka
"Well, it's official then. Let's keep a low profile on this. You alerted the guards, which means they've already found the body and even those guards can find your red coin lying there. Once this gets out, other clans will have heard of this and it won't be late until they figure out it was us that sent you there. First things first. Do you have any acquintance from Clan Orothiar? Someone who doesn't care much about clan rivalries? It'd be nice to have someone our back should they accuse us of anything. I'll contact my superiors in the mean time to get to the bottom of this. You have any other ideas on how should we proceed?"
Apr 17, 2022 8:58 pm
I have met some of the dignitaries from Clan Orothiar, but they are very much into the rivalries.
But how about we just inform Clan Orothiar of the murder and offer our assistance in the investigation?

Matron Talaraka
"Good idea. I hope even Orothiars are smart enough to understand we won't make such a daring move, even under worst conditions." she answers thoughtfully. "Alright, you go to that. And Rauka, please deal with this situation with great care. Any wrong move can put us into a potential war with Clan Orothiar."
Apr 18, 2022 6:34 pm
Yes Matron

Rauka leaves for the Clan Orothiar house. Along the way she makes a detour. South of the Court of Whispers, lives her very good friend Dazrun. She meets him with a hug
Hey Dazrun. Would you do me a favour? She explains matters

Dazrun
Not a problem dearest. I got a business appointment later this evening, but right now I am free and at your disposal. He gives her a courteous bow and dawns his swordbelt. Dazrun is a man of honour but is not held back by ancient traditions. That is a common flaw among the dwarfs and Rauka finds it very refreshing.

With her Hobgoblin friend, Rauka lifts the knocker at Clan Orothiar door. She gives it three powerful knocks and then stands back.

You wait for some time after knocking the door. Then, just when you were about to think it's time to leave, the heavy door opens and the sight of a grumpy dwarven man salutes you. Rauka knows this man, he is the equivalent of Talaraka, though not called "Matron" here. He's known as Master Kurbatin among the Orothiar. He's fond of you, finds you a decent and skilled person but your social positions made him distant to you.

Kurbatin Orothiar
"Oh, Kundarak and her hobgoblin friend. Why are you here?"

He says these right in front of the door, not welcoming you inside.
Apr 19, 2022 12:25 pm
Greeting Master Kurbatin. As you know House Kundarak specialises in security. That means that we often are the first to hear about breaches in security. I am sorry to tell you that one of your clansmen has been found dead. She gives the address
I thought that you should know, and House Kundarak offers my assistance in the investigation if the Orothiar so desires.

When you mention the dead body he quickly pulls both of you from your arm with a strong grip and leads you inside, shutting the door with his foot on his way. He takes you one of the side rooms of the office, again shutting the door and pulling the curtains. "Are you our of you mind? You Kundaraks and your passion for diplomacy!" he says with an angry but concerned voice. "Look, Rauka. Unlike your other companions, I don't dislike you. So I'm going to give this extra bit of information, just to make you put yourself together. We are aware of the body but we didn't know that it happened in one of your investigations. Well, at least I didn't know, word does not spread that fast sometimes. My best advice to you is to stay away from this. It won't be long when the others find out that Kundaraks were involved. See-" he lowers his voice down, almost inaudible. "The body belonged to a superior's child. Tensions are high. Do not make a move that would stir the pot."
Apr 21, 2022 8:41 pm
We had nothing to do with this death. We just found out about it and as a courtesy would let you know. House Kundarak is not involved in this at all. I will leave you now, to let you handle this as you see fit, but the blame does not belong on our door step
Rauka gives Kurbatin a respectful bow. Good day Master Kurbatin

As he finished his words you leave the Clan Orothiar's main office, standing in the street now. It's almost dark outside, the sky bears that beautiful reddish orangish color, mixed with purple. It's such a beautiful scene in this city, despite all the things happening.

What do you two do now?
Apr 22, 2022 8:45 am
Hey Dazrun, how about an early dinner? Somewhere public? Rauka leads them off to a public and popular restaurant. Apart from having a pleasant meal, it was also to establish a good alibi.
Apr 22, 2022 2:09 pm
With a short walk you arrive at the restaurant. As always it is booming with people talking, plates being put together, clanking voices all over. Waiters are shouting for orders, people laughing or discussing with each other. You know this place very well, so there is always a spot for you and your companion. You are now sitting at a tiny table in the corner, a bit away from the nearest table.
Apr 22, 2022 8:17 pm
Rauka and Dazrun are just eating and talking about normal stuff. There is a good chance that life is going to get complicated soon, but now they can just enjoy eachother.

Once Dazrun is off to his other appointments, Rauka returns to House Kundarak
Apr 23, 2022 8:33 am
Ae you arrive at the head office, you notice a gnome woman entering the building just before you. When you enter you find Talaraka talking with her.

Ibabnin
"What is the meaning of this?" the woman asks angrily. She was pointing to a red coin, left to the places you pen-test by you. You recognize the woman as the local sheriff Ibabnin. She's a tough but trustworthy woman whom Kundaraks, especially Talaraka has a good history with. "Would you care to explain why was this thing lying around in a friggin murder case, eh?"

Matron Talaraka
Talaraka, just when she opens her mouth sees you entering the room. "Good day to you too, Ibabnin. As my good friend Rauka can also explain, there has been an attempt to fraud us into this murder. It was just a regular pen-test, just that we have been infiltrated and the mission was given to Rauka from a false source."

Ibabnin
"So you're tellin' me our friggin' security specialists have been infiltrated? What's next? Shields will start murdering people, eh?" She was obviously angry but she takes a deep breath, collecting her thoughts. "Listen. I believe I have taken this coin without anybody seeing. Apparently some girl has reported a smell-" She stops in thhe middle of the talk, slowly turning his head to Rauka. "I'm an idiot. Of course! Whatever. Guards were there pretty quick so I don't think anybody else were able to enter the building but one can never know in this city. The dead body belonged to one Hakhur of Clan Orothiar. Apparently he was the illegal child of the Orothiar council member Tutak. Well, nobody has confirmed anything but we got a letter from the man's body. It talks about a local gang threatening him to reveal his true identity. If anybody finds this letter, check out the Ratabands was his exact words, I guess. We haven't got the faintest idea what the hell is a Rataband."

As she says this word, Rauka's mind starts shouting danger! In your area of work, one must accustome oneself to the art of misdirection and hidden messages. Security systems usually contain false sources that lead to nowhere or alerts the owners should you temper with them. Something about that word bothers you. After a while you remember that it is an anagram of a word once was very popular in coded letters, both to indicate there is more to that text and serve as a password. If anything, you are almost sure that this letter found in the man's corpse contains more information than these guards were able to extract from it.

"Well, you're lucky that I've taken a note of everything on that letter. I knew you guys are terrific detectives. Now make me proud." She then hands you a piece of paper with a terrible hand writing on it. Pushing yourself to understand the words, you manage to read the whole thing. Just as you have suspected the letter contains some seemingly non-sensical sentences. You take a pen over the Matron's desk, sit down and start working on it. The word Rataband is a code to crack the other words' meanings. Talaraka and Ibabnin just watches you as you work flawlessly, without even flinching in the moment. You eventually crack the code, which interestingly reveals you only one sentence.

WATCH OUT FOR THE SEWERS

This whole letter is written just to convey that one sentence. But why?

Who would try and involve House Kundarak in Clan Orothiar's hushed-up murder? What would they gain? A real goal or just confusion...

Rauka snaps out of it

Matron Talaraka, Sherif Ibabnin, is this something we should get involved with. Wait, that is to late now, how much should we get involved? The planted pen-test order can't be ignored, but there are little to no clues to go on there.

You came back and Ibabnin takes you stroll through the city after a mysterious look to your kit. Now the night has finally fallen and you can't decide if the city is more lively during the day or night. It is like a carnival around here with all the lights and people walking, talking. After almost twenty minutes of walking you arrive at a fancy building. It's one of the oldest structures in the city and it's the Shields' main office. The city administration has reserved this beautiful, strong building for the Shields' to pay them their respect. Just when you were about to enter the building, Rauka feels a light touch in his belly. When she turns around she notices a burgler a few feet ahead of her with her kit. Alright, you move your body accordingly, your voice is now like a lullaby, focused on only the burglar. Your voice moves like linear, conical wave, instantly putting the struggling burglar to sleep. In the mean time a few innocent bystanders are affected by your spell as well, falling to the ground. You instantly run towards the thief, restraining (you can describe how you do that in your post) him. As you were about to wake the bystanders you notice two Shields approaching your way. One of them is a tall, broad shouldered human woman, almost 1.9 meters. The other is an average size half-elf male with short silver hair and little, green eyes. "What’s going on here?" the woman asks with a firm, confident voice.

This man stole my gear while I was walking with sherif Ibabnin. I stopped him, and house Kundarak will be pressing charges.

I am so sorry sir, you were unintentionally caught in a sleep spell. My deepest apologies. She hands him a gold coin. I trust that this will relieve you of any distress I might have caught you.

When you make your case clear the two Shields listen to you carefully. You understand that they believe in you. Even if they did not seeing that burglar's appearance would probably convince them. They thank you for your cooperation and take the sleeping burglar away.

As you wake the citizens up they show signs of confusion. One minute they were walking in the street, minding their own business and the other they are unconscious. They all were about to get mad at you but when you explain the situation clearly they understand. Two of them accept your gold but the third one rejects it. "Stoppin' crime, eh? No need for money! Next time yous can even hit me!" he says with a thick accent, laughing to his own comment as he wanders off.

In the mean time, when you turn back to meet Ibabnin you find her crossing her arms, watching the scee as it unfolds. "What a city, eh? You handled that pretty well. You ever thought of a carreer in Shields?" she asks.

Captain Cenemoy
Captain Cenemoy greets you with his overly enthusiastic attitude. "BOY ARE WE POPULAR TODAY! A man cannot just leave work here, can he? Oh, hello Ibabnin." he says, giving a quick and little suspicious look to the sheriff. You get the feeling that these two have a history beyond work-related relations.

Ibabnin
"Hello, Cenemoy. This is Rauka of House Kundarak. We'd like to know if there has been any disturbances in the sewers lately. A private case we're working on requires knowledge on this issue."

Captain Cenemoy
"SEWERS? You're not the first to ask that today, surprisingly! Two of our patrols asked the same thing earlier today. I'm saying the same thing I've said to them: go ask the archivist."
May 4, 2022 6:41 am
Rauka follows Ibabnin to the archivist, where she leans that an investigation into the sewers has just begon. Watch out for the sewers that are just wage enough to fit anything going on down there.
While I have disturbed you from your sewer research, may I trouble you for the blue book? I wish to get some background into the leadership of Clan Orothiar and their families. I will read it here, not to deprive your archive of it books.
May 7, 2022 10:41 am
Archivist listens to you. He then goes in the back, takes a ladder and climbs to it to reach the highest shelf. He grabs a heavy, hard-covered blue book. The books seems so heavy to you that it must be hard to carry it, especially on top of a ladder. Lackshmist carefully steps down from the ladder, minding his every step, returns to the desk and places the book on the desk with a heavy thudding. "Here. If you'd like more information on sewers, I suggest you to contact two of the Shields named Terilith and Kaez. Earlier during the day they were investigating the same thing and went to the council hall to gather more information. Maybe they have progressed further into the case." He then returns to his own work.

You choose one of the tables from the archive room. Ibabnin seems a bit bored. "Books. I never were good with them. I'll be waiting outside, getting some fresh air. Feel free to ask me should the need arises." She then walks out of the room.

You spent your next hour reading the blue book. There are some things there that you already know like how Clan Orothiar is specialized on craftsmanship and construction. Lots of the ancient and/or big buildings in the Citadel have been either designed or completely built by Clan Orothiar's contributions. Even more houses are filled with lots of tools or ornaments, again created by the same clan. This is one of the reasons why they are so rich and powerful in the Citadel. Also, they exhibit a strong form of inner mating, meaning that almost every marital union among the people of Clan Orothiar are being decided beforehand by the elders or Orothiars in high places. That is why a member of the Council having an illegal child is a very, very serious matter, especially in terms of Orothiar's house rules.

Council of Dwarven Communities (shortly referred as Council among the Houses) is the dwarven executive branch of the Radiant Citadel's government. Each of the ten houses has one representative to work in the council, who may be thought of as the most powerful person in that clan. Each clan has its unique inner organization, of course and Clan Orothiar is one of them. They elect a Governor, differing from the Council representative. Governor is the head of in-clan affairs and representative is the head of out-of-clan affairs and unless there is an extreme case, former always dominates the latter. Two of them rarely disagrees on some issue, however. Clan Orothiar is not known for its inner disarray bu there have been some cases in history that it happened.

As you skim thorugh some parts you also gain some new insights into the rivalry between the two Houses. Apart from a few events that happened way before anyone you know ever lived, there are no apparent indications that these two clans are in a feud. Radiant Citadel is a peaceful city, at least in verisimilitude. Even if any part of any civilization were to be in direct confrontation with each other such a crisis would qucikly be forced to be solved by other Council members or by means of Shields. As you read, you slowly intelectually validate something you've felt your whole life: this rivalry is only perpetuated by people growing with the stories of the rivalry, not the actual thing.
May 10, 2022 11:56 am
Rauka returns the book and joins Ibabnin out on the sidewalk. Setting and watching the city pass by, she tries to gather her thoughts.

There is a murder of an illegal offspring
We are dragged into it by a fake pentest order
The assumed killer relies upon our clan's rivalry to muck his trace
Something wage about the sewers

She turns to Ibabnin. What do you think? I can wait for the archivist to sort out the sewer clue, but that is the only real actionalble clue.

"Hmm. Maybe it's best if we wrap this thing up for today and wait for extra info. I'll talk to these Shields the archivist mentioned. I'll drop by your main office tomorrow. It's been a long day, you should go and rest." As much as you like to solve this thing once and for all, you accept that she's right about this. The sky is full of stars, shining your way alongside with the stores and houses. You reach your house and quickly go to your bed. It really has been a long day. You go straight to bed.

You wake up to the sound of your door getting knocked. When you open the door you see a street urchin with dirty hair and rugged clothes. "Another delivery for the missus!" he says as he hands you a letter and quickly dashes away. As you wonder what the hell did he mean with another, you see beneath your feet another letter. It seems like you're quite popular today. You carefully read both of them. The first one, the one that probably got slipped under your door bears the sigil of Master Kurbatin. It's a short but firmly written letter.

"Hello dear. There has been some developments on the case. You can imagine how desperate I am to reach out to you. Please drop by our office as soon as possible. PS: Bring that lovely friend of yours too."

The second one does not have any marks on it. When you open it it seems like somebody in a great rush has written it.

"I've talked to the Shields. I'll visit Talaraka during the day, if you're not there I'll just inform her. -Ibabnin"

What do you do?
OOC:
I don't like taking the agency of the player by making their character do stuff but both the story is tied up and it is play by post. Also let's speed up the stroy of Terilith as the info he gets will be important in this story as well. I'll try to post as quick as I can.

Rauka leaves her apartment, collects her morning brew and looks for Matron Talaraka. Once she has checked in with her, she will visit Clan Orothiar. On her way there she will pick up Dazrun, but Matron Talaraka doesn't need to know that.
