bug/unauth_public_forums

May 17, 2022 5:49 am
vagueGM says:
Is there anything we can do about the inability to make subforums private in Public games? We can only prevent players in the game from accessing them, but they can log out (or Open in an Incognito Window, or something) to bypass those restrictions.

It would be nice if most of a game could be public and some parts marked as private or only for some people; or if some parts of a Private game could be set as publicly viewable.

Edit: Maybe I should turn this into a bug report?

Maybe there could be a second set of group permissions. Not just the one that's named after the game that includes all players but also a "Public" one that affects everyone who isn't a player

Could be just me but I've always disliked that the group's name is identical to the game title. I feel like it wouldn't confuse me so much if it was called "All players of game X" or something obvious enough a dumdum like me can understand it. As it I never use group permissions.

Yeah numerous times I've run into the issue of a new player joins the game and now I have to scramble to set up permissions for them so they can't read any subforums they shouldn't be reading.

Never even occurred to me that someone might log out to go peek. But that's a people problem, not a tech problem.

Bowl's suggestion could work.

Even if we don't worry about cheaters, it means that all public viewers can read the GM's private notes, which probably isn't intended.

Another option would be that maybe the permissions given to the "game title" group also apply to outsiders

You can edit people's permissions after they apply but before you accept them. Also, you can set the default permission for a forum to be invisible and then only give the players permission individually. That way, you wouldn't have to scramble

I think that would mean that outsiders can post too.

Hm, that might be true. Maybe separate permissions then after all

...but I think you're right from the user point of view - it's kinda the expected behaviour.

Perhaps it should use the read permission of the game group (but not look at the other permissions).

Check staging.

If the user is unauthenticated and the group has read denied for a subforum, then the subforum isn't visible.

If people follow the suggested way of managing groups then it should work as expected. If they've decided to leave the group settings alone and deny access to individual users, then it won't block unauth access.

Checked staging. That looks perfect. Makes sense and is what people would expect.
I do agree that the group name should probably be 'everyone' or something so it does not imply it only applies to people in the 'game group'.

Deleted source, no need to bug the Guides, it just makes them harder to read. :)

You do not have permission to post in this thread.
