Continued from the Interlude
You are your own characters again!
As the door creaks open after having been picked by Stina, it opens onto a dark hallway, illuminated by nothing but some flickering lights. There are doors to both sides and after a good couple of meters, the hallway splits in three. You can estimate that the way to the right from there would lead to the front entrance of the facility while the left way and the one forward lead deeper into the facility.

Between you and that crossway, a woman is standing, a flashlight in her hand as she faces you and the door. She must have been alerted by Henry's previous attempt to get the door open. She's wearing what looks like janitor overalls over a turtleneck sweater that reveals nothing but the very tip of a black tattoo on her neck. You haven't seen her before but she's definitely not one of the prophets from Rektor Järnek's photo.
"What are you doing here?", the woman asks in a hushed voice. "Don't you realize this place is dangerous? You wouldn't want to interrupt Dr. Sundgren's experiments!"

You do recognize the name Dr. Sundgren. She is one of the prophets, the tall beautiful woman that Dr. Liv Himmelshöjd, the woman who created the machine fetus, seemed to admire in the photo you found.
May 29, 2022 8:49 pm
"That's exactly what we want." Sabine corrects the woman. "Dr. Sundren's experiments are altering our world and making our family and friends vanish. If we don't interrupt, all of us..and you too are in danger of being non-existent. That woman's crazy..."

"It sounds like you’d have a problem with that." Henry pushes into the space as he stuffs his break-in kit into his pocket, frustrated.

"What is she doing here?"
May 30, 2022 4:49 pm
Mikael stands back, ready to help push inside the building if needed.
May 31, 2022 7:46 am
The woman looks uncertain between your group, unsure if she'd be able to hold you back.
"She's just trying to help!", the woman says. She glances over her shoulder uneasily. "There are these children, they're not supposed to be here. They're... I know this sounds ridiculous, but they're from another universe. She just wants to send them back home!"
May 31, 2022 8:17 am
Stina feels a surge of hope within her, hearing the woman's words. Children... will you be there among them, Max? Please, be there... she thinks, her brother's face looking at her in her mind.

"Children have disappeared from OUR universe. We are looking for them. We know things, about them. Maybe we can help. Or prevent a bigger catastrophe. Take us to Doctor Sundren. Whatever she is doing... it is changing reality. Please..."
May 31, 2022 10:23 am
"No, you don't understand," the woman argues. She tries to position herself firmly in the middle of the hallway to block your way. "Elisabeth is trying to fix everything. And she can't be disturbed. By anyone!" She tries a reassuring smile that falls flat a bit, however, considering the circumstances. "Just go home. Everything will be fine, I promise."

"Max! Is there a six-year-old child named Max? I must see him, he's my little brother!" she says, stepping up to the woman and tugging at her arm. "Let us help! Let us through!!"
Jun 1, 2022 5:14 am
Sabine rushes the door with ball bat in hand. If the woman continues to be stupid and not have heard a word she said or those of her friends, she is going to use the bat and knock this woman down.

'Morons and fanatics. I'm sick of them.'
Jun 1, 2022 5:25 am
The woman's face softens a bit at Stina's mention of her brother. "No," she replies. "They're all older than that. Younger than you, but older than six for certain." Then she shakes her head. "I can't let you pass. Elisabeth told me not to let anyone through to her. And I trust her that she's doing the right thing!"
OOC:
Henry (or anyone), if you want to try and convince her to let you pass, make a charm roll. But you'll need a good argument as well. She seems pretty loyal to Elisabeth.
If you want to attack her, that would most likely be a Force roll.
Jun 1, 2022 5:30 am
As clueless lackey woman opens her mouth again, Sabine rushes and Smack! hits her with the ball bat and the force of her body pushing into the space beyond the door.
OOC:
Is that enough, or should I take the complication and re-roll all missed dice for more successes?

As the group files by the downed woman, Henry stops up for a moment.

"Sorry. But we have to stop this. I know you only want to help. You should get away from here, if you can. And quick. Sorry, again."

He does feel bad for the useful idiot they just barged through, but he didn’t know how things were going to go next, and he didn’t want the woman to be a casualty either…

You head past the woman and down the corridor until you reach the point where it splits in four. As you expected, the right just leads to the main door and outside. Ahead, the corridor looks just like the one you've passed so far. Closed office doors on both sides.
It's the left way that catches your attention.
The left side of that corridor also consists of nothing but doors but the right has windows that seem to lead into some sort of larger room. You see light spill from those windows but from your angle, you can't make out what's going on inside. Eventually, the corridor turns to the right and out of your sight.

Sneak - (8d6)

(25465251) = 30

Jun 2, 2022 2:22 pm
Henry sneaks ahead of the group and glances through the first of the two windows. Behind it, he finds a large open room. In the middle of the room is a huge machine and attached to that are what at first glance looks like a number of dentist chairs. On closer inspection, the chairs are heavily modified however. Pins on the backs and the armrests that look long and pointy enough to penetrate deep into anyone sitting on them have been built into them, as well as a number of computers and machines to monitor something on them. Those needles look like they could have been what caused the weird lines of puncture marks on Mette's arms that you noticed when visiting her.

Oh, and also, two of those four chairs are occupied. There are two boys sitting on them. They look to be unconscious, their heads drooping to the side and their eyes open but looking at nothing. He also spots a third boy, younger than these two, trapped behind glass to the side of the room and trying without success to break the glass keeping him in. A tall and broad-shouldered woman is moving swiftly and with purpose between the chairs. Her hair is white like it should belong to a much older woman. She's wearing a dress shirt that is only buttoned halfway up and whose arms are rolled up to just above her elbows. Every bit of skin that is exposed below her neck is covered in tattoos of what appears to be complex mathematical formulas. Henry doesn't get a good look at her face but he's pretty sure she is Dr. Elisabeth Sundgren, the third of the Prophets who hasn't been seen in ten years.
She's so absorbed by her work that she doesn't notice the boy peeking in through the window.
Jun 2, 2022 9:00 pm
Sliding past the doorway with the others, Mikael looks at the woman on the ground and shakes his head before continuing forward. He waits while Henry checks out the situation ahead.

"Jesus…" the boy whispers back.

"This is the place. She’s in there. She… she’s busy. We’d have to rush her."

The boy peers around for a door in, and wonders how hard it would be to smash the glass in a lab like this. It was probably designed against that very occurrence.

"If we are quick, we can get her. She’s big!"
Jun 4, 2022 4:00 am
From what Henry can see, the door appears to be on the other wall of the room, around the bend in the corridor. It's a glass door and it's currently closed, though it's impossible to tell for him whether it's locked or not.
Jun 4, 2022 10:12 pm
"We have the spray cans, right? ... maybe if we rush her, we can go for her eyes first? She'd be big and blind..." she whispers to the others.

She then casts a glance from the direction they came from. "That woman back there. Do we want to do something about her too? Not too hot at the idea of having her behind our back."
Jun 4, 2022 11:34 pm
"I have rope," Mikael suggests. "She probably wont like me tieing her up though."
Jun 5, 2022 3:25 am
"Let's get inside of there quick." Sabine suggests. "If these windows are glass we can knock them out with crowbars and bats. If not, we can use hair spray blow torches to heat up the plexi, make it brittle, and then knock it out with bats and crowbars. If the door proves too resistant, I'll shoot out the lock."

"Our objectives: Save the kids and not let this monster escape."
Jun 5, 2022 4:33 am
"You got it, Sabine," Mikael says, "let's all just watch each other's backs. We've got this. " He removed the crowbar from his backpack and nods to indicate he was ready to press forward.

trying to bring Stina's Shame into play for one automatic success.
Focus, goddammit! she thinks, ignoring the pain in her hand and trying to force the back panel of the machine open. You cannot let those trapped kids down now!

Just then, the recurring memory of her failure pervades her mind - a film clip she has played a million times over in her head. A younger Stina riding her bike at high speed, upset for a stupid discussion with Mum. She had let her rage do the driving, over to Anna's house to let some steam off... but her cat... you didn't react in time, you clumsy idiot... your reflexes were shit. TOO SLOW, STINA...

She sees the scooter tyre over the white fur, feels the bump - hears the crunch of broken bones.

The metal cuts deeper into her hand, she groans in pain. She tries to tap into her burning rage, surging within her like a red tide Can you react now, or will you let people down again? CAN YOU, YOU USELESS PIECE OF SHIT??

The panel gives way and opens, exposing the wires inside - Stina sighs in relief, dives in and starts disconnecting with bleeding hands.

With the Shame, we're at five successes now. It looks like at least the partial success is within grasp

Jun 6, 2022 9:14 am
Mikael runs up to the machine near Stina. He looks into her eyes and nods. "Let's do this together. You keep working the system while I dig in and see if I can't find a way to navigate through the shut-off procedure while getting the kids out safely."

He looks around for some sort of system manual, but seeing nothing, begins routinely studying the controls and studies it as swiftly as he can. As he does, he finds that he is beginning to understand not only what the controls must do, but what order they are meant to be operated, based on how the machine is designed.

A small voice in his mind nags at him, telling him maybe things are better this way. Dad's not in prison now, we might have another chance. He pushes past the thought - even if there was a chance with this new reality that things might be different, he would always know they weren't right. He is determined to get these kids out safely.

He tells Stina which levers to reset and then which to pull, what buttons to press, and in what order. At the end is a big red shut-down button behind a thick plexi-glass shield, screwed to the machine. He whips out his swiss army knife and uses the screwdriver tool to pry the shield free. It slips as he puts his weight behind it and it stabs painfully into the meat on the palm of his hand. He yelps in pain as blood runs from the wound, but he sets the tool back and manages to remove the shield after several more moments before smashing down on the button with a bloody hand.

Sabine rushes into the torture room the second Henry bashes in the door. She keeps low and blindsides Dr. Sundgren, as the evil woman is threatening the boy locked separately in the side room, with a gun.

'Come on Sabine. Don't let these kids down. Don't let them die by the hands of this maniac. You have to stop her from shooting someone. Don't let these kids die on your watch. You are here for them when you couldn't be for Mom an Dad. Stop this killer...'

She brings the bat down across the tattooed arm holding the gun and hears bones breaking. As the woman screams, she keeps swinging..and swinging...and swinging...

Mikael steps forward, closer to the bat-wielding Sabine. "Sabine," he says, then louder, "Sabine!" He places a hand on her shoulder, "Sabine, stop. I still have that rope - let's tie her up and figure out the best way to do this. Regardless, I don't think we should let her walk away from this. Not like Jarnek and Dr. Liv. I'm tired of seeing the bad people walk away like they did nothing wrong." He looks to Henry and Stina. "They can't keep getting away with this shit. First, lets get the kids out of this machine."
Jun 7, 2022 8:16 am
Sabine stops abruptly at the urging of Mikael's voice. She instantly grabs up Sundgren's pistol and aims it at her head. "Tie her up if you want, but I see no other way of reversing all the damage she has done to our reality, besides tossing her in her own twisted machine so that she ceases to exist in our reality. We should spray her down with paint too in case those tattoos are calculations to get back. We don't need people like her in our world."

You all rush into the room, Stina and Mikael working on the machine while Sabine heads straight for Dr. Sundgren, attacking her violently with the bat. Despite the very quick entrance and acting of all the kids, Dr. Sundgren reacts surprisingly quickly. She can't stop Sabine from knocking her gun away from her, but she shields herself against the blows that Sabine keeps raining down on her. The white-haired woman's arms must hurt like hell after all these strikes with the bat. It's a wonder they're not broken. But she keeps strong until Mikael, his and Stina's work successful and the machine deactivated now, turns to Sabine and stops her from further assaulting the woman.
Stina and Henry quickly check on the kids attached to the machine. They're alive and conscious, though they appear very dizzy und unsure of their surroundings.

"I've been removed from this reality once before," Dr. Sundgren says. If she's scared of the gun pointed at her, she doesn't show it. Her voice is dripping with confidence, even arrogance. "It took me ten years to come back. I bet the next time, it would take a fraction of that. Still, I would much prefer not to be erased or even killed." She rises back up to her feet, her hands lifted in seeming surrender. "I am sure there has been a little misunderstanding here. I am only trying to help this world. All that my colleagues and I ever wanted was to improve the lives of everyone. I'm sure you would want the same thing." She glances over to the shut-off machine and flashes a confident smile at Sabine and Mikael. "I'm sure we can come to an understanding. We all want our reality back the way it used to be. You promise to let me go as soon as reality is fixed and we'll go our separate ways. Doesn't that just sound wonderful?"
Elisabeth Sundgren
Jun 7, 2022 1:03 pm
She stands up from the kids on their torture seats, enraged at the woman's words.
"You caused all this! You are in no position to negotiate, bitch!" she shouts, pointing a finger at her, hand dripping blood. She gestures at the dizzy kids in the Lab, "You kidnapped and TORTURED these kids!! You want promises?!? What did you promise THEM?"

She steps closer to the woman. "My little brother ceased to exist because of your fucking experiments!! You do what you need to do to... fix reality, or whatever. You do it RIGHT NOW - then we'll see about you!"

Stina walks to where the Doctor's gun has fallen, and collects it.

The evil scientist doesn't seem too impressed by Stina's outburst. Or maybe she just pretends to be calm. "Progress demands sacrifice. I never meant to harm these children. "Many great minds were regarded as monsters in their time," Dr. Sundgren replies. "Partially, yes. My return caused some issues. But my work afterwards caused more. You see, Sven, Natasha and I, we could have really made a difference back in the day. And yes, it was because of our, frankly, brilliant minds, but also because we had access to the most ingenious technology in the world. The Hephaesteum, a laboratory created from Flesh and Steel and filled with technologies you can't even imagine. We were going to change the world. But the police didn't understand. Narrow-minded fools. They wanted to stop us, so I tried to keep the Hephaesteum safe. I wanted to move it forward in time, so they would not find us and we could pick up our work now. I failed. Instead of sending it forward, I sent it sideways, into a different universe. And me with it. After I returned, I obviously had to find it as well. And I was so very close. Until you kids came in and interrupted me."

Jun 7, 2022 4:02 pm
"You don't restore it," Sundgren says. "You're children. I have spent the last ten years doing nothing but interdimensional physics." She unbuttons her shirt further, revealing that her entire body is covered in tattoos of scientific formulas. "You don't put a bullet in my head. You don't remove me from this reality. You leave here and return to Stenhamra or Kungsberga or Bona or wherever you live. And by the time you get home, everything will be back the way you remember it."
Jun 7, 2022 5:00 pm
"Yeah, or something worse happens! One of us blinks out of existence, or we find out we don't know each other anymore. Or we're in the midst of World War III." He looks to the others, "We cannot take the chance. Not this time. Stina...guys, we might not be able to go back to how things were if we end this now." He raises the gun halfway from the floor towards Sundgren, tears in his eyes from the anger and fear wracking his brain and body.

She shrugs, then looks all of you over. She clearly doesn't look afraid. Your talk of shooting her or using her machine to erase her is clearly just empty talk. "So, what now then? Just go home and I promise, everything will be fine. We never even have to cross paths again."

That couldn’t be allowed.

"No. We can’t do that."

Henry couldn’t begin to imagine how to use the machine. Nor would he risk further instability by tinkering with it. Turning it off was the only option.

"Are you sure you know how to use this thing? What if it messes up the world even more?!" Henry asks, hammer still in hand. He didn’t pretend to understand anything about machinery. He just wanted things to go back to how they were a few days ago.

She rushes to what seems to be the main lever activating the thing- a bulky metal handle. "I'm not sure about anything... but trying is better than leaving things as they are. Right?"

She puts her hand on the lever and looks at the others. "Don't want to do this on my own. Let's all do it. Grab this lever..."
Jun 13, 2022 7:54 am
Sabine grabs the handle at Stina's insistence and watches for signs that the evil woman is being affected.
Jun 13, 2022 7:59 am
Mikael, unsure of exactly what they're doing, shrugs. They have no idea how to operate this machine - no clue how it functions, or whether what they are doing is going to fix anything or make anything worse. Yet, it seemed they had decided. He nods to Stina's suggest and grabs handle near where is stood. "I hope this doesn't break reality," he says with a lack of confidence. He pulls the lever, wincing as he does so.
Jun 13, 2022 8:48 am
Together, you all pull on the handle. The machine powers up, screens light up displaying information that none of you are quite sure how to interpret. Initially, Dr. Sundgren doesn't show a reaction. She's still unconscious, bleeding from her head wound.
But just as you're starting to worry you might not have done it right, you notice her briefly flickering out of existence for a fraction of a second before she reappears. Closely watching her, you notice her flickering again and again until, after a while longer, she disappears completely. You hold your breath, waiting for her to reappear, but she doesn't. Instead, the room is suddenly plunged into darkness.

Using your flashlights, you create enough light to look around again. The machine is gone with no trace of it remaining. So are the kids that Dr. Sundgren had imprisoned. It's as if they had never been here.
Slowly, the realization sets in. Even though you still remember her, Elisabeth Sundgren never existed. She never kidnapped a bunch of children, she never built this interdimensional travel machine. And, unless you're mistaken, that should mean she never changed your reality. Right?
You return home and, to your relief, find that everything is not as you left it this morning but as it's supposed to be. Stina might miss the amazing motorcycle she owned for just a few hours but when she enters her home, her little brother is right there, sitting at the kitchen table and munching on some fruit, not understanding why she looks so happy to see him. Sabine, who's life had been the least affected, finds the cat gone from Kajsa's home, though Kajsa, when she subtly asks about it, decides that getting a cat would be a wonderful idea. Henry's room looks just the same as it always had. There is no trace that Sonja has ever been there, none of her belongings strewn around. And while he might feel a bit disappointed that she is gone, she did at least, before the reality shift, agree to a date. So maybe he will be able to actually win her affection, rather than just being thrown into it. Mikael also finds things returned to normal. When he speaks to his mother, he finds out that his father is still in prison and his own apartment is back in existence. Part of him might have enjoyed that moment of his family being back together, but this is how it's supposed to be...

Over the next days, you also discover that everything else seems to be back to normal. All the missing children, including Jillian, are with their families with no memories of what happened to them. Erik Granfors is the same grumpy drunk as always but when you check in on him at his home, at least his wife is there as well. And even the comic book shop, The Strip, is back to its old glory.

But that is not all. When you return to school, you spot someone in class that you never would have expected: Mark Mäkinen, the student who died the previous year at the hands of the robots of the Totem Clan, is just attending school as if it was no big deal. You realize that not only the influence of Elisabeth's machine has been undone but all the deeds throughout her life, including all that the Prophets did. Checking in on everyone involved, you find that Louise Tannenbaum is living in her strange house no longer by herself but together with her mother, Michaela, who no longer has been killed by Järnek.
Järnek himself is not principal of your school and most students seem to not even recognize his name. From Mia, you learn that her father is a scientist at the Loop. He also seems to be good friends with a female colleague of his, Dr. Natasha Lintov, the woman who in your reality changed her name to Liv Himmelshöjd but who here still goes by her birthname. While their involvement with Krafta and the Loop makes you worry for a while, it does seem like they never delved into dark and dangerous experiments as they had in your memory. They seem to just be leading ordinary lives, untouched by Elisabeth Sundgren's corrupting influence...
OOC:
And with that, we'll wrap up our Prophets of Pandora campaign!
If there's anything I forgot to mention that you're curious about, ask about it. Other than that, I think it would be nice to get some epilogues for your characters. Where do they go from here? How do they deal with these experiences? Do they haunt them? Do they make them feel like heroes? Do they just forget them and decide this must all have just been their imagination?
Since we're finishing up these characters' adventures here, feel free to go into as much or as little detail about their futures as you want.

Tried as he might, Henry couldn’t fully repress the memory of the brief alternate reality that he had inhabited. Every moment spent with Sonja was also a moment wondering if this night, or this action might have been one taken by alternate Henry and Sonja on the path to their arrangement which he had stumbled into accidentally.

Still, it wasn’t her fault, and they seemed to like each other well enough. And how could be even bring any of it up. Even if she had known something was off at the time, in that alternate place, all of that was gone now. Reversed for everyone but the unlucky few that had put a stop to it.

He tried to keep close to them, for as long as circumstance allowed. He would probably follow Sonja off to whatever corner she ended up in for her studies. Maybe that meant sharing a new place with a few of the others, if he was lucky and the stars aligned, but it also might mean the inevitable break up of the group that had saved the world.

The moment she enters her kitchen, Stina runs to hug her protesting little brother Max. He is annoyed at the sudden surge of affection (Stina is not a touchy-feely kind of sister), but Stina is too happy to refrain herself.
The huge knot of anxiety she has felt at the pit of her stomach since pulling that lever, only really disappears as she sees Max alive and bothered like he would always have been in any given ordinary day.
It had been agony until that point, the permutations of her many possible mistakes overlapping in her mind like a house of cards ready to crumble.

She surprises herself not missing the motorbike. She would have thought that her dream bike was pretty high on her priorities.
Except that, when Max disappeared... her priorities had somehow changed. Despite herself, she now does not feel the same emptiness within her for the bike's absence that she had felt when Max had gone.

But now, looking at Max pulling faces and pushing away her hug - in such a natural, vital reaction - she feels grateful, for having managed with her friends to push that emptiness away, for now.
That emptiness, she knows, will surface again in her life, like it does in everyone's life. And it will take many forms. Dealing with that emptiness will be part of growing up, painful as it will be.

She looks at Max again, and ruffles his hair.
Not today, she thinks. Perhaps soon... but not today.

Finally. Sabine and Kajsa graduate and in the summer they move, as expected to Stockholm. They keep in touch and make trips back to visit, those friends who didn't move out when they did, and Kajsa's parents. Settling in an apartment, they get a cat and enjoy the summer without any world-threatening events. They both enroll in university and pursue their dreams: Kajsa with being a model and Sabine becoming a rock star.

Mikael returns to a reality where his father is in jail, his mother is distant, and Mikael's friends are all that remember a world in which the Prophets had existed and worked their schemes.

Because she was never impacted by the Ugliness, Kristina had never grown close with Mikael again, and though Mikael was shaped by his experiences, she was not - she remained the person that existed prior to that ordeal, more concerned with herself than the world around her. Seeing her at school, he had thought about approaching her, but when he heard her quietly making fun of 'Pimples' to her friends, he decided against it.

Mikael finished high school uneventfully and tried to keep his friendships from degrading as everyone went their separate ways after school, eventually wondering if he had dreamt the whole thing.

@C1NDER, That's really sad. Mikael can always move to Stockholm, keep the band together, and maybe get together with Hare?
Jun 16, 2022 4:42 am
Sure! Maybe he follows after a short time, once he gets some of his affairs in order. He'd love to keep the band going!

It's not all sad, there surely is a lot left out from my post that is good. I wanted to highlight those aspects because it gives more weight to the decision we made - not everything was made better by our decision, though it was likely the best thing to do. The personal sacrifice in exchange for saving lives and such makes it feel more heroic in a way (more so if he considered this outcome before the switch was thrown).

I'll add a portion of his outro from our first story together:

"Many years later, Mikael would go on to start a company developing mobile technology designed to help track and locate missing children. He would proudly say that his devices contributed to saving the lives of dozens of kids in the first couple years of production. When asked what drove him, he would explain: "My friends and I went through a traumatic event when we were kids, a kid in our school was killed. I still feel the effects of that every day in my life, still think about it all the time. I remember what it did to his family, I remember the faces of everyone when it was announced, and I never want another parent or friend to feel that pain. So really, I do what I do for one simple reason: empathy."

Adding: "Oddly, any journalist that tries to fact check that story finds no record of the mysterious death."
