Scene 1: The manor

A few days ago, you all found a letter bearing the seal of the Rookwood family. As you looked around, you saw no sign of the messenger who dropped it, but it was clearly intended for you. As you opened the letter, you got momentaneously distracted by the flapping of wings as a small murder of crows that was flying by. You focused back on the letter and quickly noticed the elegant calligraphy, though you couldn't recognize the handwriting. The letter was and invitation to your grandmother's Ceremony, an invitation to return to the Rookwood Manor in the Countryside... the same place you decided to run away from years ago...

Your presence is hereby requested at the Family Manor
to attend to the ceremony in honor of your grandmother
within the seventh day after the new moon falls.

May the Lord bless her soul with eternal life,
Your most humble servant,

Somehow, you get an uneasy feeling about this letter. You don't really know why, but looking back, you don't ever remember being to a Family Ceremony before... Surely people died before... right?
OOC:
So, we will start slowly as everyone is doing the final updates for their PCs :D This is kind of the introduction post, so you can introduce your character, how or where you got the letter, what you thought about it, any preparations you made, and maybe a bit of the traveling or your arrival to the small town near to the manor (but not there yet). Feel free to add any details of things your PC may notice or remember. I'm leaving the town mostly blank for now, so it's all acceptable :D

It's also an opportunity to explore your character's inner thoughts (in a very gothic/romantic literary style😝) to let us know what your PC thinks of the others. Looking forward to seeing someone or maybe hoping they don't show up?

Outside of the local dosshouse, an envelope is slipped under the door of the spartan room where a young man lays back, exhaling plumes of smoke that ensorcell his mind. The deep nothingness that was so welcoming was interrupted by the messenger's rather insistent pounding on the door. A rhythmic, heavy thudding only reminded the young lad of the burgeoning pain in his head.

"I hear you, damn you, I hear you... Alex said, slithering off of his bed and barely remembering how to take the form of a proper man. His latest conquest, a girl who remained better unnamed, slept deeply in the thin, bare cot beside him. The little stove nearby had gone cold as the rays of morning light pierced through, chilling the air and skin alike. Alex opened the door, ready to curse the cur that dared wake him from such wonderful slumbers. The stark hallway remained empty, despite the last strike resonating right before his very own face.

"Curious." Alexander murmured, closing the door. As he stepped, the crinkle of paper was heard and he looked down to find an envelope laying upon the ground. Lifting it, his glassy-eyes widened at the symbol of his home imprinted in the red candlewax. Cutting the paper open, he retrieved the elegantly written paper and read over it with squinted eyes. He then read it over again. A third time. "Impossible...me?" Alexander muttered, tossing the paper onto the desk.

"Wh-what is it darling? Come back to bed." The girl in his bed muttered. Last night, her hair reminded him of Annabelle. Today, the light cast her in all the wrong ways. A mirror stretched profanely to fit the dreams and nightmares he longed for.

"Nothing. And no, no more bed. Get yourself dressed and gone. Oh, I lied about there being breakfast served. My apologies." The girl sat up, covering what little remained of her modesty, before throwing his tin cup at him with all the force she could muster. He ducked down as he buttoned his shirt, paying her and the litany of profanities that escaped her lips no mind. His focus was entirely on that letter, on that dreaded symbol of family, blood, and terrible disappointment. Before she could find his bucket full of unmentionable liquids and throw that at him as well, he was out the door and onto the streets.
The thoughts of the old manor consumed his mind entirely throughout the day, even as his small entourage of poets, sycophants, rakes, and would-be lovers talked amidst themselves and to him. Would he even remember its hallways? He was so young when he was made man of the branch, left to take care of so many things. An inheritance, a terrible burden, all crushing down on him. All he wanted to do was paint and make what he saw in his mind into reality.

"...gonna do?" The voice said, gruff and inquisitive. A silence had filled the room before Alexander noticed it, his remaining eye lifting in a questioning arch. All the faces there were looking upon him like a savior.

"The blind leading the lost." Alexander thought, clearing his throat as he shifted in the worn seat in what was once a beautiful chapel that had suffered immensely in the fire of last year. Now it was hollowed out, a resting place for ruffians, addicts, and whores. "What was that?" He asked, his tone accusatory in order to not let the others think that they had caught him off-guard.

"W-w-well, boss, you have tha' fancy invitation yeah? To your family's 'ome? Ya going?" Hank asked, the large man almost more than half bigger than Alexander. The scar on his cheek to his lip from a blade, a relatively fresh one, was a reminder of who was in charge here. Even amidst criminal scum, a Rookwood must soar. The others eagerly awaited to hear their man's plan or witness the scolding that was certain to be delightful.

"I don't think I will." Alexander answered, his voice nonchalant. It was an unexpected and potentially disappointing answer but it made the room crave to learn why. "What can they offer me that I don't already have? If I wished to be spit on, I rather pay Lucy over there to do it." The waifish girl curtsied, earning a quick chorus of laughter. Hank's face was still concerned though.

"Fair'nough, fair'nough, but...what if she left you money boss? A lot of it?" Hank asked, the room's laughter dying down. It was a possibility. His grandmother was quite well off and the Rookwood Family always seemed to have more coin than sense.

"You just want me to buy for you Hank. Debt collectors coming for your knees with boys bigger than you?" Hank laughed nervously, shaking his head.

"Nah, nah, I just...I just think it is good to make right with the dead. Maybe something good will come from you family?" Hank mused, grinning at the kind thought. His grin died on his face as he met the cold, angry stare that still shined through the haze of opiates.

"Listen closely and listen well; the only good thing my family did was show me to Annabelle. Their hatred, their intolerance, set me free. It showed me what freedom could, what happiness could be, what love could be...what dark melancholy could be..." Silence filled the room. All knew not to speak about Annabelle, a sore point as ever in the young man's life. "No, nothing good would come of it. Rookwood does not know 'good'. It does not know 'kind'. It only knows blood, of both body and mind." Alexander said cruelly, shrugging away the pain as he reached for the pipe.

"Maybe there is someone you'll miss!" Lucy said, not reading the room at all. A few hissed her down and a worried look spread across her face. Alexander watched her for just a moment before lighting the pipe, his calm and unreadable face illuminated by gentle fire before smoke poured from his nose while his mind dived deep.
Back at his flat, the room tidied up barely but still smelling of opium, piss, and worse, Alexander sat at his ramshackle desk once more. Fingers traced the fine parchment. It would be quickly consumed in the fire, gone from his mind's eye completely. Yet his hands reached into the desk and pulled out a few other letters. They were written in fine calligraphy, practiced but not perfect. Words that carried strange emotions upon them; encouragement, trust, and affection. The letters from Claire had kept him going in his darkest moments, giving him a reason to stay awake and alive each month. Would she be there?

The thought of her being alone with the numerous vipers of his family troubled him greatly. Removing a piece of floorboard, he collected his stash of coin and made his way downstairs to pay his accumulated tab before calling for a carriage. He would not let her manage alone, even if it meant being by those most despised. He could endure them, he endured far worse. Maybe it was a chance for redemption?

That hopeful voice was quickly smothered by a cruel laugh to himself as Alex stepped into the carriage and gave it directions. The Rookwoods were not good. The Rookwoods were not kind. Most importantly, the Rookwoods would never forget.
The carriage had trotted along paved roads in the city before moving upon the dirt trails of the paths beyond the magnificent center of cultures and to the home of backward villages and insular bloodlines. It was in these dark, outer reaches that the Rookwoods grew in influence, power, and infamy. They were both respected and feared, gossiped of and envied. Even though the noble house had suffered, there was still strength in their name.

As the carriage crested the hill, the first thing his eyes were drawn to was the monolithic and imperial estate upon the hillside in the distance. His hairs stood up on edge as he gazed upon his family manor. Even in the afternoon rays of light, their home seemed to draw in the light and snuff it. An impossible shadow lingered there, a stain that could not be seen but Alexander felt it in his bones. He reconsidered his thoughts for a moment but only just for a moment.

As they travelled further, the quaint town that lived in his family's metaphorical and literal shadow came to view. Old cobblestone, so beaten into the ground to almost have no difference than smooth stone now, bounced the carriage lightly as they pulled into town. It was as if time had not passed here, everything still very much the same yet somehow strangely different. Alexander could remember running with his cousins through the streets, the shrill cries of excitement and the searing burn of skinned knees. The memory brought the gentlest smile as he looked out the window to see Manferd's Butchers, the place they would sneak into for prime bits of jerky before being chased by the portly man's beast of a dog. His knees hated him that day but it was better than being ripped apart.

The carriage soon arrived at the local tavern and inn known as "The Sentry's Rest". Named after being a strategic location in a long since ended war, the soldier loved the land around him so much that he asked the Rookwoods for an investment. That same family, the Tarhallows, owned the establishment to this day thanks to that investment. If Claire was going to be anywhere in town, it'd likely be here.

"Here were are, Sir Alexander." The wizened coach driver wheezed. Alexander stepped out of the carriage himself, sparing the old man the task of taking his few bags and belongings. A handful of coin was exchanged with a sizable tip before the coachman began to ride towards the stable up ahead. "My condolences to you and yours. May your family find peace." The man said as he left, earning a wave of thanks.

"Let us hope most of them lost their invitations." Alexander whispered, hefting his two bags and taking his cane under his arm. With a moment to breathe, he stepped through the doors and into history.

Claire sat on her bed in her room at Riverlight Manor. She had been reading the card a few times now. She cleaned her ever greasy-glasses and read it again.

Grandmother...
She tried to recall her... was she grandfather Roderick's wife? She wasn't too sure of it either. Still, she had been invited. She would probably been able to see her brother again. And her cousins. Alexander would probably be there too. She hadn't written to him for a bit too long now.

Although she had trouble remembering her grandmother, she had to be there. Someone bothered to send her an invitation. Probably grandfather Roderick, she guessed.

Plus any reason to leave Riverlight Mansion was a good one now. With her 16th birthday less than a moon away, Claire knew what would be expected of a young lady with a good family name. She really had no intentions of finding a future husband, or worse: probably be appointed to one.

Duke Riverlight had been kind, to accept her -as well as a few other young people- into his Mansion for some proper education. Claire had always been a very eager student. And classes had always been very interesting. Still, now might be a good time to leave, and the invitation was a good excuse.

She was not entirely sure how to make it to Rookwood Manor. Or to the village inn at first... what was is called again? The Sentry's Something? It had been a while.

With the invitation in her hand, Claire left her room. Making way through the halls of Riverlight Manor to find governess Holmes. As she found her she spoke up, ever so politely, as she had been taught.

"I beg your pardon, Mrs. Holmes. There is something I would like to discuss with you. I would like to request a leave of absence for a little while..."

Surely some family member would come pick her up, her brother maybe. She just had to sit and wait.

Roderick examines the thin paper of the letter against the lit fireplace, as if trying to read the hidden truth between those scribbled lines.

Tell me, sister... would you have wanted the tainted Rookwoods to gather in your memory, I wonder... he thinks. Gathered in celebration... of your wickedness? he sneers inwardly, but the sentiment does not reach his mask-like countenance.

His pale arthritic fingers crumple the letter, pocketing it within his dark velvet jacket - styled in the fashion of a past long gone.
He looks at the dawning sky outside the high window. A strange stillness in the air, like gods brewing a storm.

So the dice are cast. The Rookwoods are gathering, by the will of an unknown scribe.
Who wants us reunited? Is that you, sister, penning from the ice-cold vaults of the grave, with worm-eaten fingers and the ink of your black soul?...
as on cue, a flash of lightning tints the distant clouds, too far for thunder to reach his ear.

He turns away from the window, his gaze resting on the ancient spines of books on the oak shelves.
He thinks of the last time he has seen the younger family members. There was a dispute. There always was.
He tries to scrutinize his reactions... does his hardened, dark heart - or a nugget within it - feel any longing for the imminent reunion?

No... I surely do not wish to see that wretched Alexander... he will probably be fresh from his latest avenue of dim-witted debauchery. Who have you ruined in the meantime, Alexander? Whose fortune have you squandered, I wonder...

And young Claire... has the burden of our family name turned you into an outcast, out there in the world? Have the privileges that our influence can bring mitigated the shadow that taints our name? It will be fascinating to observe in you what our legacy means, in these despicable times...

Luckily, Nathaniel Elias might be there. Yes... there might still be hope in you. You had the Rookwoods strength flowing in your veins, the legacy of a great family of soldiers, politicians, leaders... you had... a spine. Is that still so, can my hopes still reside in you...

But what of... the Doctor? He is one to mistrust... an outsider. Marrying Being adopted into the Rookwoods does not make you one, Doctor. I am afraid it does not work that way. You might feel smug in our reflected prestige, sawbones... but that same mirror is a tarnished one. Beware of its shadows...

He sighs in the silent house. Opens the double oak doors, into a semi-dark hallway, not bothering to turn on a lamp. His steps echo on the ancient floor, with a determination he had not felt in years.

No matter. Come to Grandfather, young ones. Come, all of you. His eyes, cold as a gravestone, glint with ambition. Come... I shall bend you all to my will.

Elias sat at his desk and held the invitation in his hand. Carefully reading it a third time, Elias comes to the conclusion that it is what it is...an invitation. To come home for a ceremony to honor his grandmother. Grandmother...why am I having trouble drawing on memories of you?

Coming to a conclusion, Elias places the invitation 8nto the envelope and then utters a simple yet shouted command. Runner! Within moments of the shout fading away, a young camp runner knocks at Elias's door. Enter... Elias says as he looks back at the papers on his desk. The young messenger moves with a purpose and enters the room and closes the door. Moving with a purpose, the young lad stops in front of Elias's desk at a practiced position of attention, waiting to be acknowledged.

Elias ignores the lad as he writes a message to the Colonel in charge of his unit. Although he was a weakling of a man, the Colonel had heard of the Rookwood name and was thus...useful. Once the message was finished, Elias folded the message and sealed it in red wax...with the Rookwood seal pressed into the wax.

Handing it to the messenger, Elias looks him directly in the eyes as he gives simple and yet important directions. This goes directly to the Colonel's hands...no one else is to touch this..let alone read it. Once you've done that, go to the stables and have the livery Sargeant prepare a horse for me. I'll be leaving and traveling to home for a time.

Once Elias is sure the orders are understood, he dismisses the boy with a wave of his hand. As the door closes Elias stands up and begins to pack for his trip home. First..switch from a horse to a carriage. Then head to Riverlight Manor and pick up Claire. A small and rare smile threatens to break across Elias's face as he thinks about his sister. Then his face hardens back to stone as he continued to pack. Ahh..Grandfather..I definitely need to talk to you and speak on how things have gone so far.

As he finishes packing, Elias grabs his bag and with one last look at his room, he walks out and closes the door behind him. With a purpose Elias heads to the stables and prepares to leave.

Nathaniel stared at the letter that didn't have his name on it, but was clearly meant for him. "To: The Child of Mr & Mrs Rookwood", looks like someone wasn't going to miss the opportunity for an insult. And who was this 'grandmother'? Nathaniel had never really heard much about her, granted he didn't talk to the family much, and when he did, family was rarely the topic of conversation. Was old man Roderick married? He had to have been at some point. Maybe this was referring to Roderick's mother? No, that' can't be right. This was all very strange. Why was he working so hard to be accepted by a family that was so odd? 'Everyone needs to belong somewhere' he thought to himself.

It was then that he noticed one of the medical assistants looking at him and the letter, apparently waiting for an answer. "Ah, this letter is . . there seems to be . . er, There appears to have been a death in my family."

"Ah, a shame that. Sorry to hear sir. So you'll be going home then?" she replied. He would hardly call the manor home. Now that he thought about it, he wasn't sure if he had actually been there, or simply absorbed his parents stories as his own memories. He shook his head, as he realized he was late with another answer. "Come now, surely you've heard the rumors, this is my home." he says gesturing to the office they were in. That received a chuckle. "But yes, I will be leaving for some time. Please keep my home safe for me while I'm gone."

With impressive efficiency, the livery Sergeant manages to get two horses ready for Elias, one of which will carry enough supplies for the travel. "Sir, you should find a relay station when the sun is highest if you take the main road." The man handles Elias a letter. "I recommend resting and changing the animals there".

The travel goes as planned, the quick stop and fresh horses helping Elias move faster. However, as the day continues, dark clouds slowly fill the sky, the sun shying away as a storm takes over a few hours before Elias arrives at the Riverlight Manor. Once there, Elias dismounts quickly, moving with the single purpose of finding Claire. His knocks at the great mansion's door are answered in no time by the short butler. He immediately looks surprised to see Elias, who he recognizes, standing soaking wet at the door. "Oh, ah, good... good day sir. Please, enter." he bows and shows Elias the way inside. "I will let the duke know of your presence and arrange for your belongings to be taken care of." He turns around until he finds a maid passing by and quickly ask for a warm tea to be prepared.
OOC:
Anything about the travel you want to add? What do you to as a response to the butler? He will call the Duke and is getting you a tea to warm you up.
In the meantime, Claire has been sitting in her room. Unsure what to do, she decided to wait to see what would happen. While she does so, one of the other girls her age, a well groomed sure-to-marry daughter of a minor noble knocks at the open door. "My dear Claire, I am devastated by the news I heard. May I come in?"

As you walk along dimly lit corridors, the sound of your footsteps is interrupted by one single caw. You look around and see a crow standing on the leafless branches of a tree, almost as if looking through the window you are passing by. In that moment, you almost imagine a presence in the room. Maybe it is your sister replying to your inner thoughts; maybe it's just the emptiness of the silent room. But as you continue to walk to your destination, the feeling remains: the feeling of being observed by the lifeless statues in the corridor, maybe even judged...

Are you going to some place in particular after you read the letter?

Alexander walks into the Inn and looks for a place to sit and wait for a few hours. There are a few commoners drinking and eating, but the place is not particularly busy at this time. Even so, it falls silent almost instantaneously as Alexander steps through the wooden floor. It's a small, but noticeable difference. Clearly, no one there expected to see the man in Town again. The Waitress comes running towards him in a very clumsy way, almost as if trying to correct some unforgivable mistake. She is probably one of the youngest Tarhallows as you don't remember ever seeing her. And you are sure you would remember a pretty face like this one.

She bows nervously "My Lord. What brings you to Town?" You can sense the surprise in her voice. She glances at the empty table and bows again "I shall get our best brew for you, my lord. Can I help you with anything else?"

As Nathaniel leaves the office, the memory of his parents briefly comes to mind. They were, as far as he remembers, the only Rookwoods who actually accepted him as one of their own and actually managed to provide a homey and unworried environment where he spent most his childhood. Those were some good memories; it's the others that came after that he can't stand...

He leaves the unassuming small flat that doubles as a clinic and prepares for the long travel back to the origins...
OOC:
So where is he going next? Does he has something he wants to do before, goes into town like the others or is just too earger to get this over with and goes straight to the manor?

Claire's thoughts were not so much with the grandmother the could hardly remember, as much as with the fact that she would probably seeing most of the family again.

She had been trying to do the daily business as usual, before her ride would come. Which consisted mostly of finding a comfortable chair and a good book anyway. So when Alice knocked at her door Claire was reading.

She looked up.

"Please, feel free, Alice," Claire said. She was always happy to see Alice. While Claire was generally a bit of a shy and quiet outsider among the students. Even though that Claire wasn't very popular, she didn't have any bullies or enemies either. Most other students just... failed to notice that Claire was around. Still, Alice was kind enough to come for a chat from time to time. As was probably in her nature, kind and gentle and quite a miss perfect. Which occassionally resulted in Claire following Alice through the hallways, unable to find other people to hang around with.

"It is okay... I... didn't know grandmother all too well.", she said all though she thought at all. She sighed.
"And grandmother was very old already," she bluntly assumed.
"But I imagine grandfather Roderick must be devastated now that his wife has passed".

Who was grandmother anyway? She wouldn't let her doubt be shown to Alice though, so she gave an uneasy little smile to Alice.

"I haven't seen my family in quite a bit... my brother, my cousins, grandfather... have you seen yours any time recently? I mean... Riverlight Manor is nice and all, but it does feel weird to be just pulled away from everyone you know and love... and then one day move to a different family to get married."
Jun 4, 2022 9:36 pm
Roderick looks at the crow, smiling at the omen. "You are right, my friend. Where are my manners... after all, I am still the closest thing to a host, for those unfortunate souls."
Besides, if guests have been invited, by the penmanship of our mysterious writer, they will need rooms to stay. Perhaps the House staff know more than their Master...

He walks in the cavernous halls and panelled hallways of the Manor, calling out, "Gunther? Where are you hiding, you dim-witted beast? Gunther! Answer at once!"
OOC:

Each step Alexander makes is practiced and concise, even though the heady sensation of his last opiate indulgence teases his senses. The room had become almost eerily quiet. As he takes off his own jacket and finds an empty table to sit at, a young girl emerges with all the grace of a surprised feline. She stumbles after him, both in shock of his appearance and the fact that she keeps making little mistakes. She was young, maybe a year or so older than Claire and on the cusp of womanhood. It brings him the faintest smile as he clears his throat.

"It appears that my grandmother has passed away, sadly. I was invited back to pay my respects." Alexander says nonchalantly, settling into the seat. His good eye looks over the room, encouraging the attentions of the others to go elsewhere. "The finest brew sounds delectable. What is your name?" Noting her name, he would then continue. "Have any of my dear family come to town as well? Anyone up at the old manor?"

It was probably best for him to arm himself with as much information at the moment. Grandmother was already dead, it wasn't like making her wait would make things worse.
Jun 7, 2022 12:24 am
Elias nods his head, as the butler speaks, not paying any particular attention to him. As the maid approaches with the promised cup of wa tea, Elias flashes her a quick devil may care grin and holds her gaze for a moment. As the maid blushes slightly and quickly drops her gaze, Elias promptly speaks. My thanks for the tea...it is exactly what I needed. Would you do me a small favor of the utmost importance? Would you let me sister Claire know that I have arrived. I'll be by the fire warming myself.

Elias wat he's as the maid bounds away, practically flying to obey his simple command. Ah...the lower class is so easy to move to your will. Like the pawns on a chessboard.

Elias turns his attention back to the fireplace and waits for Claire.

Nathaniel looks back as he leaves, he really would miss this place. He's accomplished so much here. 'Don't think any of it will be enough to impress the others though' he thought to himself. The clinic really is the only home he has. Oh well, no sense delaying this. Even if he wasn't going to enjoy the experience, the information gathered would be fascinating.

Claire heard the maid knocking on her door and knew it was time. She knew that her case would be brought downstairs, so she stood up and gave Alice a big hug.

"I hope we meet again" she said.

She made way downstairs. As hurried as she could do without being impolite. Heading towards the guest's tea room. Peeking in from a distance at first. Elias! She hadn't seen him for quite a while. She looked at him for a moment as he sat by the fireplace. She stepped into the room.

"Good afternoon, brother," she said. Suddenly finding herself quite formal, as she had been educated in Riverlight Manor. Still, she walked, at quite a speedy pace, to him for a hug.

Alice tries to cheer Claire up, mostly by echoing how good it will be to see her family again. However, she became a bit more somber when asked about her family. "No, my family... they are from very far. But everyone is so nice here, so it's ok." As Claire mentions marrying, a big smile forms on the girl's face "Oh yes, I'm sure we can find ourselves a nice husband".

Their little chat is interrupted by the maid knocking on her door. "Miss Claire, your brother is downstairs by the drawing room's fireplace". The woman bows slightly and waits for the girls to leave the room, before entering and making sure all is ready for her departure. Alice hugs Claire back and just says with her warm and kind smile "I hope you have the most wonderful time with your family. I'll see you again soon"

Elias waits for Claire in the empty room, drinking his warm tea by the fireplace as the storm outside continues. The butler returns in a few moments and bows again "I apologize for the delay. The Duke is away at the moment. I will have the guest room prepared for your stay", the man offers, clearly assuming you would not go out back into such a storm.

The Waitress looks surprised, almost even uncomfortable, at the mention of Alexandre's grandmother, but she doesn't make any comment about it. "Well, the staff is always at the manor, I guess, and... she stops for a moment, probably still considering the news about the grandmother's passing. "...your grandfather was seen recently in the village". She bows uncomfortably and walks away quickly, just short of running, which she is clearly trying not to do in your presence. She was so awkward she didn't even give you her name, but you end up with a drink which, though being a bit unrefined, it's still above many of the cheap alcohol you experienced in the City.

As you savor your drink, you look around. All together, this does feel like the sort of place where rumors would converge... though maybe being a Rookwood makes it more difficult for you to get them out of the locals. As you consider this, your attention is caught my a shape moving past the window on your side. A shape that would be very much the size and build of Nathaniel, though it was too quick to tell for sure.

The crow tilts its head, looking at you curiously... almost as if wondering what your plans are... As you continue walking, you hear loud clumsy steps and the constant gasping for air echoing from the dark corridor. Gunther, your reliable servant shows up as instantaneously as his poor physical condition allows him to.... which is still surprising faster than one would assume, just by looking at the man!

"My Lord" he bows, taking the opportunity to try and sneak a few extra breaths unnoticed. He looks a bit confused as you mention "instructions" and, clearly the staff didn't receive any letter. You do question if Gunther would even be able to read it if he were to see one. "Well, my Lord, the Caretaker told us we should prepare for visitors. We're setting up the guest rooms and the Cook as sent for supplies." You don't need to grill the servant as you're sure he is not hiding anything from you. He doesn't seem to know much, but you get the idea the preparations would be for 7 or 8 guests for about a week or so. Though you know the staff tends to plan for extra just in case.

Alexander did his very best to keep his face neutral when hearing about his grandfather being at the manor. Of course that damn skeleton hadn't found its peace in the ground yet. The thought was instantly swallowed by one of regret; was he really as bitter as that man was? This conflict of emotions was only seen for a moment as Alexander's eyes narrowed for just a moment. She bowed and departed, leaving him with a drink and without a name. He smirked a moment, taking a sip from his glass to savor the richer flavors than he was used to.

"At least there was a privilege to aristocracy, it seemed." Alexander thought, taking a deeper draught from the glass as a familiar shape passed by the window outside. He had only met the man in passing when he was younger but he was another outcast of the family. "Nathan? No, not Nathan. Nathaniel! Yes, that was it." Alex pondered, smiling to himself. His family had instilled in him the importance of names; never forget whoever you can. Just remembering with a smile can turn a situation around for you entirely. Placing his half-empty drink on the table, he would quickly rise up to open the door and catch his adopted relative before he disappeared further into town.

"Cousin Nathaniel?" Alexander asked, his voice betraying perhaps too much hope. Nathaniel was not of the true blood, adopted into the family and made into a Rookwood. While others would look down on him for that, Alexander nearly considered it a blessing. He was someone detached from the Rookwood line, someone who had been out there in the world beyond their station. "I was worried that it would simply be me and Grandfather Roderick at that damnable manor. How have you been?"

Alexander was far more cleaned up than he had been before, his clothing somewhat new if a little rugged. The eye-patch was certainly a new accoutrement, the scar of cuts barely rising up above and below the black fabric. He offered out his hand towards the good doctor and would take his in a firm shake. There was a glassiness to his eyes that betrayed his condition though; Nathaniel had likely seen many opiate addicts and all of them had those wet, hazy eyes that showed that they rarely preferred to be in their right mind.

"Would you join me for a drink? I have just arrived and have no desire to join my grandfather's...lovely company until I have had another drink or two in me. What say you?" Alexander's intentions were truly pure at the moment; he had expected to come home to a nest of vipers but if he could recruit Nathaniel and find Claire, perhaps this trip would not be so rotten. It'd also give him a chance to talk with the common folk some, get them to open their mouths and spill some interesting rumors. Towns like this survived on rumors and he was certain that there would be quite a few of them about their late grandmother.

Alexander gets out of the inn so excited to see a potential ally, or, at least, someone he can count on to not trash him at the first opportunity, that he barely takes a moment to see who he is talking to. It is only after the man turns toward Alexander, that he notices this is probably a local huntsman who is returning home. The man looks almost stunned by the unexpected barrage of words throw at him. By none other than a Lord of the Manor, of all things!

Nathaniel arrived in town after a terribly uneventful trip 'So much for what they say about the journey mattering.' he though to himself. He decided to check in with the local medics, letting them know he was in town and available to offer any assistance if called upon. Not out of arrogance mind, just a professional courtesy. Once that obligation was seen to, he decided to stroll around town for a bit, no need to be the first to arrive. The thought of standing in the foyer alone with the old man sent shivers down his spine, and he was not easily shaken.

He didn't get far before he sees Alexander heartily greet a man that maybe looks a little like himself? Perhaps if one was inebriated? Humorous as this situation had the potential to be, Nathaniel decided to intervene, before the hunter assaulted Alexander, or worse, Alexander insist he didn't make a mistake and forces the man to join him.
"Cousin?! Has it been that long?"

Elias mods his head at the news from the butler. The delay was expected and acceptable. It'll take time to arrange for a carriage.

Once the storm has passed, I'll need to arrange for a carriage for myself and my sister. Elias says to the butler. Looking around for Claire. Standing near the fire, Elias soon finds himself warming up.

Alexander stops, a momentary look of confusion on his face as the person he imagined seems to evaporate into a stranger. There was only a momentary look of uncertainty before it shifted under a controlled expression once more.

"My apologies, my good man, you looked like someone I once knew. Carry on." Alex had no intention on dragging this man into his drama, turning to head into the pub once more. Perhaps he should've had one last taste while on the carriage and rested in a rented room till the evening came. Making his way towards the door to return to his half-drunk pint, he stops when another voice calls out for him. Turning his head, he catches sight of Nathaniel crossing the quiet street towards him. A wry grin spreads across his face as he turns to present himself to him.

"I knew my good eye didn't deceive me! I sensed you were close!" Alexander said, an embarrassed laugh leaving him as he looked back at the retreating hunter. "I thought you would have broader shoulders by now. You must be excellent for narrow hallways." The tease was light and in jest, something to diffuse the mistake Alex made himself and add brevity to the situation. "Come, get a drink with me. The Tarhollows haven't forgotten their debts here and the ale tastes sweet."

Once inside, Alexander would sit across from his cousin and nod to the poor servant girl who had came to see why the door had opened. The number of Rookwoods had doubled, it seemed. Alexander seemed well; strong of frame and still quick with his mind as he turned to the serving girl.

"Another glass for my cousin and top me off. Can't have a toast with a half-empty mug, can you?"
Jun 10, 2022 8:47 pm
Quote:
"Well, my Lord, the Caretaker told us we should prepare for visitors. We're setting up the guest rooms and the Cook as sent for supplies."
Roderick grabs Gunther by the back of the collar and brings him close to his face. "And since when keeping your Master in the dark about such preparations has become acceptable in this House? Since. When?" he scolds the poor man, taking pleasure in his discomfort.

He lets him go with a disdainful push. He points a cruel finger at the servant's face. "As for the rooms... listen carefully."

He proceeds to give specific instructions to the man.

"Now go. I shall wait in my study. Go fetch the Caretaker on the double, I want to see him now."
He turns his back to the servant and heads for the sanctuary of his study.

Once in the oak panelled room, he sits in a leather armchair and touches his cold forehead, brooding. Could the Caretaker have written the letters? Upon whose instruction has he arranged for the rooms to be set? We shall soon find out...

"You know cousin, there are some people would say that the glass is half-full. Erm, it's doubtful any of those people are Rookwoods though. he gives a small chuckle as he sits down and continues "I'm inclined to assume your enjoyment of the local ale is party to prolong your trip to the manor? Uhn, if thats the case, I do think I will join you for a toast."

"A wise man, cousin, a wise man you are." Alexander says, settling into his seat with a little more ease now that someone else who holds the weight of their name is in his company. It was strange to think of it that way. Amidst the scum and villainy of the world, your name was only as heavy as you made it and Alexander did his best to not rule with it. It was instinctual for others to congregate though, how often did the highborn come and roll around in the mud as hard as him?

"Partly yes. I have no real yearning to be the first one to see our grandfather. I'm sure you and the rest have heard the news of how our business went." A ruined business deal, a fortune lost in smoke and hubris. A screaming match, curses, and a thrown bottle. Hopefully, that was not the cause of his missing eye. "I'm also hoping to put the fellows here at ease some, places like this are the home of rumors and gossip. I don't...remember much of Grandmother but...maybe you do?"
Jun 13, 2022 5:09 pm
"I'm afraid I can't help you there. I've even less access to family gossip and rumors, than you, I'm lucky if I'm privy to facts. Perhaps our cousins can enlighten us upon their arrival." He thought of several question that were penned up in his head before letting one free. . ."Elias and Claire are coming aren't they?"
Jun 13, 2022 6:11 pm
"I don't know, honestly. Claire has been keeping up to date with me about her time at Riverlight but that is really all. As for Elias...well...he hasn't been on good terms with me since...you know..." Alex let the statement hang in the air. His failings were well-known throughout the family and Elias has easily scraped him as another deplorable stain, just like Roderick has. His stomach twisted at being in close proximity with the two of them.

As the serving girl returned, an idea brewed inside of his head. The smallest smile spread across his face as he nodded towards his cousin.

"I have an idea. Maybe we can come into the manor a little forewarned." He would reach out to the serving girl, motioning around the bar. "Excuse me. I realize that our dear Grandmother has passed. Yet she would not want us to be low in our cups, frowning all the while. Maybe...a round for the room? In her memory?" Free drinks meant open lips and perhaps he could find some rumors after lifting the room's spirits a little bit.

Though a small backwater Town, it stands at an important trade route, its relevance as a trading post and resting place surprisingly unchallenged over the ages. As such, Nathaniel decided to look around the local guilds, introducing himself and offering his temporary services to the Physicians' Guild. It took him some time to sort all the paperwork and introductions, but time was something he actually wanted to waste, so it was a satisfying meeting overall.
https://c4.wallpaperflare.com/wallpaper/223/722/518/dark-room-candle-gothic-hd-wallpaper-preview.jpgAs he leaves the guild's office, he is confronted with Alexander confusing him with a local Huntsman.

Alexander is very confused by the situation, but quickly apologizes to the man who, up close, looks very different to Nathaniel. Though these things happen, he still gets that lingering feeling that it was Nathaniel. It just... doesn't make sense how his cousin is on the other side of the road... Shrugging it off, he decides to invite the real Nathaniel to have a drink and both go back to the tavern. He orders a refill and starts chatting with his cousin.
OOC:
They chat about how another drink is "just" to delay going to the Manor
Coincidentally, the Waitress returns with two mugs for the men, just as Alexander mentions his "business ventures". She looks down at her feet, bowing uncomfortable. Clearly understanding she came in at a bad time, she tries to escape as quickly as she can.

As Alexander announces a round for everyone, it is like as if time itself stops, and you feel the eyes of the few commoners scattered around the Tavern trained on both of you. It's not that the Rookwoods have been bad to these people. In fact, quite the opposite! No war or plague seems to have come to Town as far as anyone can remember. And the people know this can only have been due to the Rookwoods' status and influence.

No. It is just that they are used to simply being left to live their lives. And now, two Rookwoods drop by the Tavern on the same day! And offer a round to everyone! There aren't many people around so its not quite the noble feast, but you're sure there will be plenty of gossip among the locals today...

After a moment of uncertainty, the Waitress starts to move and offers a mug to everyone, excluding the working staff, that is. One man from a group of farmers gather the courage to raise his mug from afar as a gesture of appreciation.

Gunther apologizes. He keeps apologizing as he listens to the instructions. In fact, the man apologizes until he is out of sight, such is the shame of his perceived blunder. Though Roderick can't stop wondering if there was something more to all that apologizing... Roderick looks around only to see the painting of his own brother staring at him. Whoever painted that was far too skilled as the thing looks lifelike.

He walks to his study. Sitting in his armchair, Roderick waits for Gunther to return...

The butler looks surprised as Elias mentions they will leave once the storm has passed. "But my, lord, it will be dark when the storm ends. Would you not prefer to stay the night?" he suggests, being interrupted by Claire's voice..

"Good afternoon, brother," she says, suddenly finding herself quite formal, as she had been educated in Riverlight Manor. Still, she walked, at quite a speedy pace, to him for a hug.

Elias was in the midst of verbally telling the butler why it's best to not question his orders..when he heard Claire speak to him. Turning at the sound of her voice, Elias moves forward and sweeps up Claire in a hug and instantly forgets about the impudent butler. Little sister, you've grown. At least they feed you well here, much better than what I've been dining on as of late. Tell me, how have your studies gone? What subjects are your favorites?

Elias stands there talking to Claire when he notices the butler standing off to one side. Remembering the statement and question posed by him, Elias feels his anger rising back up. Yet, as quickly as it appears, it just as quickly dissipates by Claire's calming presence. Very well, prepare the guest room. My sister and I will depart in the morning after breakfast.

Roderick glances at his fob watch for the tenth time, in a foul mood for his servants' lack of efficiency. That old fool of a Caretaker moves with the energy of an arthritic slug. How old is he, anyway? It's like... he's always been this age, since my childhood. Has the man found immortality?... he muses.

Tired of waiting, he stands up from the armchair and walks to his study shelves. His fingers run slowly over the spines of old tomes, his companions for so many decades...

His hand stops on the spine of one of his favorite collections of poems. He pulls it out.
And yet... those same passions have been channeled into such beauty and perfection... it is truly a mystery. That an imperfect, pathetic being could achieve the heights of creation...

Claire smiles a bit awkwardly. Sure, she was quite a bit younger than Elias, but she really wasn’t little anymore. She’d quite grown up since she’d been to Riverlight.

"I am becoming quite a lady, yes" she giggles "and yes, I can’t really complain about the food here. If we stay here overnight, I am positive that will find you. Duke Riverlight spares no expense for his students at all. What have you been eating then? I’d like to hear all about the adventures you must have had, when we travel to the manor."

She sat down sit him at the fireplace, listening to the wind blowing past the windows for a moment. They’d be sharing a bit of a tea time together. Claire does chatter a bit about her life at boarding school, how she likes math and history way more than etiquette and sewing. She’s quite talkative for a while really, much unlike her. Until she brings up a question that had been plaguing her mind ever since she has gotten the invitation.

"Elias, please excuse me. I don’t want to sound like I am disrespectful or anything… but… it seems like I can barely remember grandmother. And now we’ve been invited to her ceremony. I can’t really recall grandfather Roderick being married. Do you remember grandmother well?"

To be honest, I've some vague memories, but that's all I can say for sure. I think she's been ill for a long time. Yet, we've both been invited to her ceremony. So whether we remember her or not, it's our duty to return home.[

Alexander chats with Nathaniel for a time, getting a feeling for the man while also keeping an eye on the friendlier farmer in the corner. When the man's comrades begin to disperse, Alexander stands up and brushes himself off.

"Wish me luck, cousin. Going to go and rub elbows, see if I can learn anything." Alex makes his way over to the man, letting a cheery and tipsy smile decorate his face despite the fact that the fine drink had not yet touched him. It was of higher quality but Alexander had drank much deeper quantities in his debauchery. Moving towards the man, he would lightly toast him.

"You seem to be the friendliest of your people here. Most act like they've seen a ghost seeing us old bloods back in town. I must admit, it has been some time...I am certain Grandmother has been busy in the years since I last came to the manor." Alex starts, sighing wistfully as he slips into the seat across from him. Taking another long draught, he times the drink just long enough for the man to begin speaking before he interrupts. "It has been so long. Oh, I'm sorry for that-I just...my family has been so distanced lately. I didn't even know Grandmother was unwell. You know what she and the family have been up to?"

And so began the quiet conversation with well-timed interruptions, apologies, and quiet prods for information from the man. If things went well, maybe he and Nathaniel would be better armed than they normally would be when they met the rest of the family.

A duty to return home. She pondered on it. That almost sounded like an obligation. She'd been interested in going back home and see the family again. Surely, she hadn't been super excited. That would be inappropiate for the occassion, and it wasn't truely in her nature to be so. But still, she never felt it much of an obligation.

As Nathaniel watches Alexander walk up to the Farmer, he notices how his cousin blends so easily with the lower classes, something he himself would find troublesome to do. The Farmer puts his mug on the table as soon as he realizes that Alexander is actually coming over.

"Thank you my lord" he bows thankful both for the ale and the compliment. "We don't see one of the family around often. Hell! we don't see any since when y..." he stops talking as he notices one of the others gesturing. He looks nervously at Alexander, clearly noticing this is not the sort of gossip (or language!) to be had in the presence of a Rookwood.

However, the way he looked at you gives you the feeling that it was something you were involved with, so it must have been years ago! If your Grandmother has indeed been busy, it was probably not in Town, which could explain the weirdness in people's expressions whenever you mentioned her. The Farmer quickly changes subject, turning to the others as if he just had a realization "Maybe it is not a coincidence the Knights are here ..." he stops for a moment to think. "I thought they were here to put a stop to the rumors about the forest no?" his face and voice change to that of a very pious man; a change that seems too abrupt to Alexander, maybe even practiced. "God forbid us from believing all that non-sense of course."

As in every small town, you notice there are plenty of rumors going around. Unfortunately, the men don't have the time to stay and chat all day and excuse themselves as they have to get back to the land. "We wish your good grandmother a fast recovery and will pray for her" he adds before leaving, clearly misunderstanding what Alexander meant by the "was ill"

As Roderick’s old arthritic fingers begin to pull the book of your choice, he notices that there are a few gaps between a few books. Not that many, so probably one the staff members just moved them to the wrong place. Roderick picks Les Fleurs du Mal, a controversial book that only a powerful family such as his could keep, given the immorality and decadence of the scenes described in this so called "work of poetry". The old man slowly move deeper into the library, still thinking about the displaced books for some reason you feel like he should remember which ones these were...

He looks puzzled at the spaces left by the missing books, those gaping holes on the shelves, that should not be. They are like an insult to his ordered mind, a defiant, impertinent challenge left by his idiotic manservants, no doubt.

He focuses on recalling the missing titles, trying to remember the sequence of the book spines that he so many times paused to peruse.
OOC:
so, thinking of rolling 1 die of Guile (grey) to summon the memory of the book titles, for a 'moderate' effort.

-Reward will be to know exactly what titles are missing, providing him the perfect excuse to indulge in the grilling of servants, that will need punishing for their sloppy work.

-Risk would be that his memory fails him, and that he is himself the cause of such misplacements. he will have forgotten the missing books in other rooms of the Manor. That will be an embarrassment that he would rather save himself, in the eyes of the servants. He prides himself of being a fanatic of order, and of having a sharp mind.

As the two men chat, it is easy to see that Alexander has rubbed elbows with the common folk before. If it wasn't for his finer clothing and his signet ring, one could almost believe he was a commoner as well. The farmer finally begins to speak up himself and Alex sits back, listening like a snake in waiting. A drink here or there, a friendly smile, and you would be amazed at what a person would be willing to divulge. The man stops himself from stepping into too intimate of territory, something that Alexander both appreciates and is annoyed from. He was not here to test them, though he was certain the craftier of the townsfolk would think he was.

News of the Knights brings an inscrutable glimmer to Alexander's eyes for a moment; so it seemed that the pious have descended upon their hometown. What it could supposedly be out in the woods, none would truly know and the knights would certainly be tight-lipped about it. A demon? A nude mad man? A philosopher with a critical thought towards the Church and Government? It could be any one of those things. It did make for an interesting turn of events though.

"Thank you, I am sure your prayers will help her find rest." Alex said, waving them off before finishing his drink and removing himself from the table. He would move over towards Nathaniel, sliding back into his original seat, before leaning in softly to whisper. "Well, it seems Grandmother's illness is an unknown. They don't even know that she has passed. There is, however, a number of Knights in the woods likely on some small crusade. For what, they did not know or would not share."

"Enough about that though. Tell me Nathaniel about your clinic, your work, everything like that. I had heard the rumors that you are quite the doctor now, are you not?" Alexander asked, his smile polite if just a little coy. Even those not directly related to the bloodline always seemed to be involved in something odd and suspicious. Not even Nathaniel could escape that.
Jun 20, 2022 8:47 pm
Nathanial gives Alexander light applause for his performance as he rejoins him. "The clinic is going well. I am 'quite the doctor', but you know I am not the type to brag. Actually, I could have likely used your help at the local clinic. I offered them my services and they didn't seem inclined to accept my proposal. Like you say, my reputation should have preceded my arrival. Unless..." he says as a frown briefly crosses his face before shaking his head to get rid of the thought. "Wait, what are the knights up to?"
Jun 22, 2022 10:23 pm
"Unless?" Alexander prodded quietly, arching an eyebrow slightly. While he was a black sheep of the family, he was still of the family. No Rookwood could resist the potential scent of scandal or gossip. It didn't seem like Nathaniel was ready to bite upon the bait yet though as he quickly changed the subject to the knights.

"The man didn't say. Not that I'm surprised..." Alexander said, giving a slight shrug. "...the common folk are aware enough that poking into the business of the knights invites them to look into your own. No one wants that scrutiny."

KingHotTrash says:
"No one wants that scrutiny."
Nathaniel visibly bristles at this phrase, but tries to move on. . . "Perhaps the old man will know what's happening in the woods. Then again, he may be the cause of the problem. You never know with the Rookwoods. Present company excluded, of course." he adds smiling, and finishing his drink.

"Excluding me? Then you're not as bright as you seem Nathaniel. Nevertheless, I appreciate your kind words." Alexander says after a laugh, grinning as he settled back in his seat. Old Roderick could be the cause of the issue but they'd be at the manor. What was it about the woods that had them so concerned?

It wasn't time though for the thoughts on the pious, not within the inn at least. Instead, conversation slowly moved itself towards the safety of small talk while it looked like rain was going to come in the next day.

@Dr_B

Roderick quickly remembers the titles of the books missing. The first thing he did when he returned to the manor was to confirm the strict book order he had optimized over the years was still being respected and enforce it where it wasn't. He could probably find any book in a matter of seconds using his system. However, he also remembers that he read them recently and... surprisingly, he does find them in his study!

He feels a bit ashamed that he would have forgotten to put the books back; this is something Gunther would do, not him! But it would take him only a few instants to rationalize this lapse into something more... acceptable.
@Cettish,@Squadfather44

Claire replies to her brother and talks a bit more about the library to Elias. It hasn't been long enough for him to relax and let go of his recent training, so he still remains alert at all times. Even as he listens to his sister, he gets distracted by a presence just outside the drawing room door. Claire immediately notices the change in his brother and looks to see what is going on, only to recognize Alice, half hidden by the door.
OOC:
So, Elias knows someone is there, and Claire recognizes Alice. She doesn't run away scared, but she is still unsure what to do, giving you the opportunity to decide what do you do, Cettish. Do you let her go away, call out to her or do something else?

@KingHotTrash,@crazybirdman

As your conversation moves away from the events that may be happening in the woods, you both notice the Waitress leaving the Tavern for a moment to meet with someone you haven't seen in a very long time. It takes you awhile, but you end up remembering who the old man is: Gunther, your grandfather's personal servant. Speaking of the devil! Old Roderick does seem to be in the area...
Jun 25, 2022 8:04 am
The forgotten books put Roderick in a foul mood. He is well used to vent his anger on his subordinates, and now finds himself incapable of directing his resentment on himself.

This is surely the result of external pressure...

He ponders about the circumstances that led him to this point. Of course, the imminent gathering of the Rookwoods is on his mind, but... There is something else, it cannot just be that, affecting his faculties.

There is a force at work here, a powerful hidden puppeteer that is moving strings from a dark backstage... Who wrote the letters to trigger this gathering... Who wants us all under these ancient roofs.

Yes, he tells himself, it is that force that is tampering with his mind, and not a senile moment of forgetfulness.
Jun 25, 2022 7:52 pm
Claire looks up at Alice and gives her a kind smile.

"Alice!" she says in a friendly tone, as if she hadn't been snooping around at all. She couldn't blame a little curiousity. It was healthy to be curious about things, and it was not often that there were visitors. "This is my brother, Elias. We got hold up by the storm a bit, so we'll be leaving first thing tomorrow morning instead of tonight."

She introduces them in a friendly way. Also trying to avoid any intense response from Elias.

"Elias, this is Alice. One of the nicest students around in Riverlight manor. I just had a talk with her about grandmother earlier today."
Jun 28, 2022 12:20 am
Elias gives a polite bow as his intense stare never leaves Alice. It is a pleasure to meet you Alice. I'm glad my sister has a friend such as you here in this place.

Standing there beside Claire, Elias holds his gaze a moment longer and then breaks it turning away and looking at the door and hallway that Alice was hiding behind.
Jun 28, 2022 4:29 pm
"Oh lord, don't look now Nathaniel but...it seems that our dear grandfather is in attendance." Alexander murmurs, gesturing towards the window where Gunther's old shape could be seen. The man had been Roderick's servant for time untold. The fact that he was still alive was incredible to the young Rookwood. "Shall we see what dear ol' Gunther is up to? You've got the critical, respectable mind, I'll follow your lead."
Jun 28, 2022 7:12 pm
Nathaniel frowns "Well then, I suppose it was overly optimistic to assume we could avoid him forever. But, you are right, information is ammunition, let's see what we can find out." he says as he goes to talk to Gunther "Why, Gunther, how are you? Please join us for a moment while you are here?"

[ +- ] Almost home...
@Dr_B

As Roderick thinks about the mysterious forces that are at work, he remembers his younger days at the Manor and how the family has been tied to it for so many generations. As he does so, he naturally wonders to the only window in the room, and watches the darkness of the night, looking at the storm approaching from the north.

Suddenly, something catches your eye outside. A shadow or something moving in the ground's graveyard. Whatever that was, it's nothing you would worry too much about. Probably one of those ever-present crows anyway... Instead, it is your sister's mausoleum that grabs your attention. The statue, a perfect replica of how she used to look, seems to be staring back at you, almost as if it wants to tell you something. You are sure it was not facing the Manor last time you were here... so someone must have moved it. If someone is actually sneaking into the Manor's grounds, you have to get those chains fixed. You clearly need to get the house in order as no one else seems to be willing to do it...

@Cettish,@Squadfather44

As Claire enthusiastically says her name, Alice blushes and slowly moves into the room, as if a little child caught doing something naughty would. She greets and bows flawlessly, despite being very nervous around Elias, particularly as he maintains his intense stare. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Lord Rookwood. I hope you found your travel to the Riverlight Manor pleasant." she says, quickly turning to Claire to explain why she was there "Oh, apologies for the interruption. I was on my way to the kitchen to ask for a glass of water. Would you like me to ask something for you as well?" Elias can't tell if this is just an excuse or not, but Claire, knowing the girl, seems to trust her
OOC:
Ok, I think this was a nice little introduction. Let me know if you want to do something specific or when you want to call it a night ;)

@KingHotTrash,@crazybirdman

Leaving it for Nathaniel to make the first move, Alexander follows the doctor outside to meet with Gunther. Once again, the Waitress is startled by their presence. The girl seems to have either forgotten they were there or just assumed they would not have noticed them outside. As Nathaniel greets Gunther, she excuses herself and runs back to the inn.

Gunther, on the other hand, looks confused as the two men approach him. You both know this is sort of his normal look, so you don't read too much into it. However, it is impressive such a dim-witted man could last as long under Roderick's service as he does. You have seen far more competent servants lasting, much less under that old man. "Lord Alexander and Lord Nathaniel." the man starts, surprising you with his clear memory. You haven't seen him for years and at his advanced age, you just assumed the man would have forgotten half his life by now! Hell! With that constantly malnourished look, you may just as well be surprised he is alive to start with! "Welcome back home" he says, mostly oblivious to the fact no of you would think of it that way. "I am very well. About about you sirs? Going to the Manor? I will let the master know of your arrival."
OOC:
I don't know if Dr_b wants to add anything, but I think you just know Guther is very loyal and for some reason Roderick seems to put up with him for far longer than you'd expect. He's like Roderick's personal servant, so one of the few family retinue left since no one else has servants.
Jun 29, 2022 8:16 pm
"It is good to see your mind remains as sharp as a blade, dear Gunther." Alexander says with a small, polite smile upon his face. "We assumed that a return to the manor would be...inevitable. We were certainly hoping that you could tell us the arrangements our dear grandfather has prepared?" Alexander looked towards his cousin for a moment, arching his brow just a little bit. It was time to see if his dear cousin had the gumption the survive within the roost that was the Rookwood family.

A trespassing in our family cemetery, he thinks with mounting fury. If the hicks around the Manor start to think this can be a destination for their undignified intrusions, it is clearly a sign that the name Rookwood has lost its authority. Time to give the bumpkins a lesson, so they know the Rookwood are still watching, and are still a name to whisper in fear. A couple of bad-tempered mastiffs in the grounds should do the trick... I will talk to the Caretaker, to see if we have something suitable in the Kennels.

Roderick wears his heavy wool long coat and ventures out, to check the chained section of the cemetery and assess what damage and outrage has been perpetrated in their grounds. The wind slaps his face with purposeful violence, but his stony countenance does not flinch for a moment.

You can see Gunther is a bit uncomfortable as you mention his "sharp mind", almost as if trying to figure out what you mean by that. Clearly the man is not used to hear such words; definitely, not from Roderick. "Oh yes, arrangements. Yes, your dear grandfather. His arrangements you mean? yes, yes." the old servant starts to mumble, not quite sure what you mean...
OOC:
So I have Gunther mumble since Alexander is leaving it to Nathaniel to pick up on his question...

This already feels like a challenge to me. I'm going to say it's a fairly difficult one, since Gunther is very loyal to Roderick; this would go against his motivations (or orders, which are probably the same). crazybirdman, when you post, tell me what bad things might happen and what good things could result from your action.

Just a quick wrap up. I'll start you on a separate scene soon
As soon as Elias mentions any friend of Claire is his friend, Alice seems to relax a bit and nods as he asks for a tea. "I shall ask one for you, my Lord." she bows confidently, wishes you both goodnight, and continues to the kitchen. You spend some more time looking around the Riverlight Manor, as Claire shares what her life is like now. It doesn't take too long for the weariness of the long travel to catch up with Elias, and both decide to call it a night. You still have a long way to travel back home.

You leave as soon as the sun starts to rise, the storm having subsided during the night. The Butler has everything ready and provides you with a comfortable carriage. He offers his condolences to your family and apologizes for the Duke's absence, quickly inviting you to return and visit once your business is finished.
@Dr_B
[ +- ] Night at the graveyard
On your way out, you come across Gunther, still looking for the Caretaker. Apparently the man is nowhere to be found, but it is equally likely that Gunther just didn't look in the right place as well.

You continue to walk into the Manor's cemetery. A fog is starting to cover most of the grounds, the humidity in the air almost feeling like frozen droplets on you. You know this is a misty region, but it seems to be thicker than you remember. You walk confidently to the chainyard, the locked portion of the cemetery, having walked this path many times before. Though tonight, you feel a bit uneasy. Maybe it's the crows perched on the gravestones, or the nearby storm. Again, you have that feeling like something nearby is watching you... like you felt with your sister's statue. The wind grows stronger and colder as you get closer to the mausoleum, almost as if trying to push you back, some mystery force wanting to prevent you from reaching it. But whatever this imagined force is, it can't stop you from reaching your goal. You grab the chain, still astonished by the fact that you can't see where it actually broke.... it's almost like as if they just... disconnected from each other.
OOC:
You don't really see much in the dark for now... what do you do? Do you return home and leave this for tomorrow? Do you search more? Do you have a "moment" with your sister?

Actually, I think I will use my asset of Satirical Wit to reroll those two dice because losing a trait die sucks right in the beginning. Go go game features!
As they talk, Alexander can tell that they're losing Gunther so he relies on the one thing he could always trust in; his wit. He makes cutting jabs not only about his dear grandfather in such a way that even a loyal servant could snort at but also himself and Gunther as well. It'd be insulting if his wit wasn't so keen as to make the blows seem less offensive and more humorous, allowing the uptight society they existed in a moment to indulge in the ridiculous humor of it all.

Maybe the Stake system can be adapted to PbP a bit better by RPing it one stake at a time! (systems with these back and forth are nice at the table but tend to get unwieldy here).

You have the buy out the "not fail" risk to get any information, so I'll start by RPing Gunther's reaction to that one. He has opened up and is ready to talk :D
Gunther is slightly confused by the surgical terms and comparisons. After all, the man has little experience with modern doctors and their practices. He does get the idea that it is difficult and so the analogy does not fall flat. "Oh thank you, Lord Nathaniel. Yes, yes, these days it has been difficult to manage the manor. A lot to do, a lot to do." Alexander skillfully grabs the opportunity to make a witty remark about Roderick's nearly obsessive need to have "it under control", softening the remark with a joke about how he himself could not survive Gunther's job. "Your grandfather likes things in their natural order. But things need to things to work perfectly if they are to work at all. he briefly defends Roderick, before sighing "...but there are so many things to prepare..."

"Of course there are so many things to prepare. Grandfather is so damn particular about things and then there are the preparations for Grandmother. Even a skilled man such as yourself needs help." Alexander smoothed over with empathy, patting the man's bulky shoulders before he continued. "I must admit though, I had such little time with grandmother here at the manor. My memory of her is quite...foggy. You've been here forever, Gunther. Please, tell me about her some. I'd hate to embarrass myself in front of Grandfather. You know how he gets when he is disappointed."

"Oh yes of course of course. Your grandfather is very busy with more important things. You will meet soon, no need for me to bother him" Gunther nods as he agrees with both of you. He looks towards Alexander in silence, trying to remember something. "How old are you boys now? Yes, you must barely remember your grandmother... yes. That is, if you met her at all" he stops for a moment, as if to relive some old memories. "Your grandmother was a very sweet girl, that she was. Master Roderick was very fond of his little sister. But after she left, the master doesn't like to speak much about her". He looks around for a moment, then to the sky, and then to his empty basket, and you notice the man is starting to get a bit more agitated.

"Indeed. Grandfather Roderick barely ever spoke about her. At least to me. I know terribly little about Grandmother and I would hate to reopen old wounds by questioning the old man about what happened to his dear sister." Alexander said quietly, ruminating for just a moment. After a second though, his eyes opened with a brilliant thought. "I realized something. You could tell me about her passing Gunther! [ +- ] Nonsense
Gunther
"Oh yes, yes, you boys wouldn't know much about your poor grandmother, I guess. Most unlucky girl she was." he continues talking about her as Alexander probes further. "Poor girl Very sweet" he repeats as he looks at you a bit confused. "Her passing? Why do you ask? Oh, dreadful thing. Young Master was deeply saddened by it. Never even found the body." The man looks again at his empty basket and then through the window inside the tavern, getting clearly more agitated as you probe him further. "I'm not sure what happened... Me and the Master arrived late that day. I remember there it was something about the war that kept us away. And the family never really spoke much about it."

You both get the feeling that there is something very wrong with the way he talks about your grandmother. Not only does he keep referring to her as a sweet girl, he also seems to imply that Roderick is somehow young. Even more strange is the mention of the family... If you might have not met the woman... and everyone you know of, except Roderick, is younger than you... who could he be talking about? And then what war is it talking about? There have been minor conflicts here and there, but the war? The war ended decades ago! Hell, were you even born back then? You can't help but wonder if the man lost it completely.

Gunther turns to Nathanial and whispers "What about the woods?" the man looks over his shoulder from time to time as he continues. "Oh you must mean the rumors about a giant wolf in the woods? Non-sense. No wolf could be that big. Youngster pranks is what it is" the man looks unsure of how to continue. It is very clear that he is aware his next words are blasphemous. However, Alexander's down to earth attitude and Nathaniel's scientific outlook seem to convince him that you are not one of those fanatical puritans. "It's the Knights and their witch hunt. It's driving everyone insane. I tell you that's what it is." he now looks very, very nervous "The Ree... The Reeve. He even hired some men. Hunters of these sort of... creatures. Hunters! Can you believe it? Mercenaries to kill what? A wolf of all things?" You look at each other as you both know that, if the Knights are somehow are getting involved with these rumors, they surely don't think this is a mere wolf.

The man suddenly stops talking like he has said too much already and apologies for having to leave. It seems he will need to return to the Manor soon (you know how Roderick is!) but he needs to finish his business in Town before that.
OOC:
ok so you left the risk that Guther gets nervous... he is clearly afraid of something at the moment... and that will have some down the line. You also did not take the rewards of learning what Roderick is up to and about Gunther's meeting with the Waitress.

Alexander's wry smile began to fade bit by bit with each and every strange word that Gunther said, the man's manic description of his grandmother being young when she passed away. Had the servant gone mad? There was certainly confusion on his face as he spoke to the matter of her death. Roderick seemed young in his memory. Could it be that his grandmother had already been dead? If so, why was there a message now for a funeral? What was the point of all of this?

The information of a massive wolf within the woods having drawn the attention of the Knights was curious too. They would not be there to hunt down some bloodthirsty beast. The fact that the Reeve, the town's magistrate, had called them in was curious as well. It had to be something unusual, something that no one would wish to speak about.

"Of course Gunther, we've taken too much of your time now. Please, be safe." Alexander said with a honeyed tongue, his charming smile fading away when the old servant moved away and left him with his cousin. The mask fell away to actual concern, his eyes narrowing as he spoke softly.

"Nathaniel, that...that was strange was it not?" For a moment, the confident bravo before him had pulled back to actual concern. What exactly was happening in his home? Who was the funeral for? Were they in danger? The thought of Claire being caught in this strange web made his stomach twist before he took a breath. All there was left to do was move to the manor and see what dark surprises awaited them there.

@KingHotTrash, it is perfectly valid this is Alex's interpretation, but it may have been my fault trying to make the make him sound more worried, stressed and maybe non-sensical about topic. I didn't mean to imply that the Reeve called the Knights here.

The reeve did hire hunters to kill the wolf, which Gunther thinks is insane. The association is that the Knights and their witch hunt is driving everyone insane (in Guther's opinion)
