The old-school octogenarian preaches the integrity and virtue of the family, while being secretly prone to indulging in vice himself... He sees Alexander as a lost cause, barely family to be honest, specially after his shameful public downward spiral into the opium dens and his so-called "failed colonial investment". This clearly leaves Elias as the only one worth of the Rookwood name! Maybe Claire... If the Governess you sent her to manages to get you a good marriage.

Alexander Rookwood, son of Jeremiah and Elizabeth Rookwood, is the sole heir of the Rookwood-Cainwright Branch of the distinguished family. Untold tragedy seized his family; older and younger siblings dying to wasting diseases; his mother going mad and hanging herself in the sanitarium, while his father disappeared into the deep and dark oceans of Urth.

A cunning young man, gifted with a quick mind and great physicality, who seemed to avoid the strangeness that infected the greater family. What poison he had inside of him was unleashed by his vices that rose up when grief came consuming. First it was women and wine, wealth lost to whores and cheap ale, poor bets, and wild investments. That was until his sweet Anna came and saved him from his own wretchedness. Daughter of the wealthy bourgeoise, with a heart unlike any noble, she lifted him from his deep sorrows. It was her who told him about merchant fleets, the possible wealth the ocean held for him, and inspired him to speak to his grandfather Roderick.

When time came to put thought into the notion, his sweet Anna disappeared and left him heartbroken. Old loves returned; burning whiskey and scandalous men and women of the night. They brought a new lover though, a beautiful fragrance that promised stupor and nothingness. Opium and Alex was a marriage made in hell, the former consuming the latter. He ended up tricking Roderick out of a vast fortune, a betrayal that earn him the hatred of the family.

The only person in the family who seems to really care about you is Claire, but he also shares the "outcast" feeling with Nathaniel.

@Cettish is the nerdy and dark teenager sister

Claire Rookwood is the teenaged sister of Elias Rookwood. She is small for her age, and a bit skittish usually. Due to her terrible eyes, she is one of the few people who actually owns a pair of glasses! Her bad eyes? Probably because she likes to curl up in a comfortable chair and spend the whole day reading. Stories, or her encyclopedia. Often, so quietly that other people completely forget that she is in the room at all. She is not very socially skilled and finds it difficult to interact with strangers. This makes her even desperate for attention, particularly to make friends with other girls.

You feel smothered by your brother Elias, especially after your parents disappearance. As a teenager, smothering from your older brother is not the sort of affection you really want. You just want to find your place and your independence. Even though it is not a place you really enjoy, Elias' attitude is the reason why you accepted Roderick's suggestion of having you sent to a duke's court and be trained in the skills of a proper Lady. Anything to just be left alone for once.

You also think that, with all Alexander went through, the others may just be too unfair on him. Maybe if they had forgave him for his betrayal and tried to accept him, he could have become a better person?

@Squadfather44 was groomed by Roderick and his idealized version of the Rookwoods, specially after Alexander's downfall. Seeing how the family was slowly fading away, he decided to join the King's new army to recover the family name. However, the new army model forecasts a major power centralization, which means the noble's power will be restricted. It's a gamble, but it could pay off if he manages to rise quickly enough.

You probably tried to help Alexander at some point, but after he tricked Roderick out of a vast fortune, you just couldn't find any more excuses for his behavior. This is betrayal, plain and simple.

Your little sister has gone through a lot and she is small and weak, so you feel the need to protect Clair and help her, even if you need to ignore some of your duties and responsibilities towards others.

@crazybirdman is the adopted cousin.

Nathaniel was adopted into the family but has never really managed to be accepted, in particular by Alexander, who mostly treats him like he isn't part of the family. This makes him feel a kinship with his cousin Alex, who is hated by the family for different reasons. He tries hard to please the family and be finally accepted. This is in part why he travels the lands to study at the most well-reputed universities. He hopes proving his smarts will finally earn you a place in the family, but; if it doesn't, at least he managed to escape them and make a name for yourself...

Putting down Alex even more by kicking his addiction may be a way to prove himself worthy, but Nathaniel is still reluctantly supplying him. He doesn't talk to my other cousins, much, one left for the military; the other is so young.

Nathaniel, you are trying to keep Elias off Claire. Maybe it's your medical training; maybe you just feel it's too much. The way he keeps protecting her is definitely harmful, maybe even why she is so shy and her social skills are not as developed as onskeletonse would expect for her age. It's just unhealthy and you worry about her well-being. Or... maybe it's really just because you despise how your cousin is always getting the recognition you deserve, just because he is "real-blood".

Gunther: a dim-witted beast of a servant. A reliable servant with a noticeable poor physical condition but still surprising faster than one would assume, just by looking at the man!

The Tarhallows: Descendants of the soldier that established The Sentry's Rest[, the local tavern and inn with help of some Rookwood investment.
The Waitress: presumably the youngest of the Tarhallows and quite the pretty face. Confused about grandmother's passing and clearly one to know the local rumours.
Wizened coach driver: Just the coachman that took Alexander to town. He when to the sables to rest his horses.
Cousin: an huntsman that may or may not look like Nathaniel

Soft melodic voice, with a slight foreign accent. Smiling, friendly and good looking. Maybe late 30s or early 40s.

Aunt: Alexander's mother who took care Elias and Claire when their parents disappeared. Few years later she went mad and ended up hanging herself in the sanitarium.

Hank: A criminal scum almost more than half bigger than Alexander. The scar on his cheek to his lip from a blade, a relatively fresh one, was a reminder of who was in charge here.
Lucy: A waifish girl that frequents the once a beautiful chapel (in the City) that was hollowed out, a resting place for ruffians, addicts, and whores after being destroyed in a fire last year.

(Riverlight Manor)
Duke Riverlight: A kind man who accepts few young people into his Mansion for some proper education.
Governess Holmes: The person in charge of Claire's education
The short Butler well, he is likely short...
Maid she get tea done, somehow...
Alice: a kind and gentle and quite a miss perfect girl about Claire's age.
