For the unfamiliar, Masks of Nyarlothotep is a beloved globetrotting Call of Cthulhu campaign that (semi) recently got an update to 7e, which includes all sorts of new content. It is a classic pulp style adventure where the players are drawn into a vast conspiracy to... Well you'll have to find out.
The game is a sandbox style campaign; the players are free to progress at their own pace, the world moves around them, and their enemies are hard at work. There are scenes of action, social interaction, combat, exploration, investigation, and more. Nearly any character can excel in this campaign, and I will of course be modifying things to suit the characters we end up with.
Adult Content or Controversial Themes: This is a game of Call of Cthulhu, and your characters will be going up against the servants of unspeakably alien gods who care nothing for human morality. Bad things may happen to your characters and the people they care about. I do not intend to shy away from descriptions of violence in combat, or the gory aftermath of Things That Should Not Be. Sexual content will be limited to brief descriptions and fade aways if such things become relevant. There will be no descriptions of violent sexual acts. Call of Cthulhu is set in the 1920s, and racism is a part of the world. That is touched on in the campaign at various points, but there will be no use of slurs from myself or other players, and I do not allow racist characters.
Character Restrictions: Characters will be built with the standard CoC 7e character creation, if you want to use any of the official variations within the rules, feel free. For non-official content ask. The only major requirements for characters is that they be willing and able to go on a long term archaeological expedition into the mountains of Peru in the early 1920s on the dime of wealthy entrepreneur Augustus Larkin. Your character should have SOME skills useful to the endeavor (or else have convinced the financier that you do), whether those skills be academic, more practical, or merely a friendship with Larkin or someone in his entourage. Speaking English will be a good idea, since the majority of the game takes place in the then-British Empire.
Additionally, I'll need to know who or what is important to your character. I'd prefer to avoid loner type characters with no ties to anyone but themselves. If your character has no motivation or connections, it becomes rather hard to tempt them with cursed knowledge or threaten them.
Game Duration and Post Frequency: I'll be upfront here, Masks of Nyarlothotep is a long campaign and play by post is slow by nature. I expect this to run for quite some time, but I also expect to keep it moving steadily towards the conclusion. My plan is to make 2-3 posts a week that advance to the next "beat", whether that be a combat round, a half hour of searching an area, a morning of making contact with people, or a week of travel, depending on where the game is at any given time. I'd also like to maintain either a separate thread for discussing the specifics of what players want to do. So a beat might look something like this: I describe the events of the previous beat, what you have learned, and where you all are now, then ask what everyone would like to do next. Players discuss in or out of character as appropriate, then state their intentions for the next beat. I'll ask clarifying questions, or perhaps begin role playing a social interaction. Once everyone has responded enough to advance, the beat will close and the next begins. I'd like it if everyone could commit to posting once daily to ensure things stay moving.
Specialized Software and Resources: I intend to use 3d models and the like through Tabletop Simulator to give you an idea of how individual scenes or characters look, but the game will be run through GP, with nothing the players will need outside of it.
Player Experience Requirements: All level of experience with both CoC and RPGs in general are welcome, all I ask is that you be willing to do some roleplay and write out your characters actions and reactions.
How to Apply: Provide a character concept including your character's concept, brief history, and some connections to people, places, or things that give an idea of who they are and what they value. Do that and affirm you're willing and able to post roughly once a day, and you're in. I'm looking for 3 to 5 players.
This game is explicitly friendly to LGBTQ+ folks and any other minorities or marginalized groups.
I look forward to hearing from you, and I'm ready to answer any questions! Thanks for reading this far!
