Character-focused, writing intensive, D&D 5e

Brief pitch: something is going horrifically wrong in a farming town at the edge of a jungle, and 3-4 level 1 characters need to investigate the mystery and set it to rights.

Keywords: investigation, horror, D&D 5e, character-focused, writing-intensive.

What I'm hoping for: players who are willing to make big choices, interact and develop characters, "yes-and", and contribute collaboratively to a story.

Further information: Hi! I'm a long-time tabletop DM trying my hand at play by post because I have a child and do night school. I would say I'm pretty far on the sandbox end of the spectrum. I want to try a couple of one-shots to get the feel for the medium and develop a longer campaign setting in which the world is recovering from a war between artificers and druids. The village for this story is in the southernmost part of the Maxchel Confederacy, the area most devastated and decentralized by the war, now populated by the descendants of returning displaced refugees. The environment is Central American style rain forest.

Information about the setting and the townspeople is already written up at: https://gamersplane.com/forums/9067/
If that seems like something you might like, drop me a line!

Content Warnings: I'm hoping to do horror so please assume gore and body horror, as well as a generally spooky vibe. That said, we'll absolutely do lines and veils and respect that.

Minority, disabled, and LGBTQ Friendly! I promise to put in the effort to craft a world that is inclusive and welcoming to the absolute best of my ability and to accept feedback on doing better. I promise to actively encourage players to do the same. This also includes any accommodations I can help with for players who have a native language other than English.

Game Stuff:

1 post per day

There will be a zero session in which people talk to each other and establish relationships while they make characters. Maps and a bunch of in game information all characters would know will be provided before start. I'll try to integrate backstories into the plot, and hand out individual information based on character creation choices. Once everyone's characters are set up, I want to run short (3-5 post) intro scenes for each character before they come together. Then it'll be a mystery with combats, with movement and pace largely dictated by player choices. If characters want to sidebar I'll open up a new thread so that it can happen concurrently without stopping the main thread.

-level 1 in any class in an official book. Take one free feat. Standard starting equipment for class and background. Roll 4d6 keep three in character creation thread or standard 27 point buy, your choice.

Setting-specific character creation things:

-Your character needs to be a resident of or frequent traveler to the small village where the adventure will be set.

-race: there aren't single race nations or even communities, and people have fallen in love, as people will, without regard to boundaries. A lot of people have mixed heritage. You can pick a traditional race or, within reason, just pick whatever racial stats seem mechanically fun and we can work together to reskin that as you like.

-Only exception: No drow. (drow stat block is fine)

-noble background: this village doesn't have hereditary nobility. You would still get all the mechanical benefits but you would instead just belong to the family of a richer farmer or merchant.

-Some backgrounds like sailor may not be appropriate. Talk to me, we'll work out something that is useful in the setting and hits the high points from narratively and mechanically.

-druid: as a result of historical events, druids tend to keep apart from society. It's fine for your low level druid to still live in town while they learn the ropes, but there is a firm expectation that as they become more powerful, they will leave society forever.

-artificer: artificing is illegal most everywhere and very frowned upon by custom where there's minimal enforcement. This doesn't mean you can't play an artificer, just please make sure your backstory takes into account how you learned a forbidden skill and what you're doing to get away with it.

If you're interested but unsure, feel free to message me with any questions.

Already was keeping an eye out from the discussions is discord as it sounds the sort of game I'm into with writing intensive. Haven't been in a more investigating game in 5e before so curious to see how it goes

I am most certainly interested joining the game.

Amount and quality of information you have put together already is impressing. And yes, I would like try a PBP game that integrates backstories into the plot.
Actually, I'm happy I would be able to discussion thing like "How do you think your character acquired these skills in an isolated small town?" with a DM during character creation.

I'm not a major fan of horror, but I do love 5e. I think it might well be something interesting to try. If you find that you have a space to fill then I'm available for that.

This is definitely interesting and I'll gladly toss my hat in. The character we create for the opening adventure.. would it be one we carry through the entirety of the campaign or just the one-shots?

At this point I'm not promising for sure there will even be other one shots, but the tentative plan was to do one to flesh out each of the big sort of cultural spheres. The very rough ideas for the other two are higher level gladiator story in the authoritarian dystopic roman style place and pirate water adventure in the island city state merchant area.

So probably not, but if i end up trying to do a campaign in the world, maybe they couldtransfer for that? But that's months in the future and no guarantees about it happening at all.
