Hey all! This is a pretty strange feeling for me because I am both new to role-playing AND to posting in forums! I'm usually too nervous to even post a YouTube comment, but this space seems very promising and welcoming already, so I'll give it a try.

Everything I really know about RPGs comes from the several actual-play podcasts I listen to regularly; One-Shot, Campaign, Six Feats Under and The Adventure Zone are some of my favorites. I actually heard about this site from the Modifier podcast and was so taken aback that I'd never heard of it earlier. Play-by-Post sounds right up my alley, as I tend to worry my new-ness to the rules may hold back other players from having a fast game. (It doesn't help that I'm terribly slow at adding up dice rolls. :P)

The game I find most interesting right now is 13th Age, as it really lends itself to making your character's personality and backstory feel mechanically important. Really any game that explores the characters' relationships, I'm into.

Well, this is a good place to learn and a good community. Welcome.

And if you're interested in 7th sea, my games are public so you can read along

Welcome Howie_Wilhelm! First, don't think you're going to slow down a game. I know I can speak for myself, and I suspect for most of the active people on this site, were you at a table with me, and I knew you were new, I would have NO issue with the pace (barring you being intentionally slow :p).

But that in mind, PbP may be a great first step for you. You can read games, learn games, and find what your perticular thing is. 13th Age is pretty great (I got to my play my first game just two days back), though it isn't really played much on GP. Having gotten to try it, I'd love to see more of it! If you're more into the RP side of things, may I also suggest Star Wars FFG, either of Monte Cooks current games, Numanera and The Strange, or Fate/Fate Advanced? All very rules light systems that are far more focused on the story than anything else.

Welcome, Howie Wilhelm! Yeah, 13th Age can be pretty fun. We have an ongoing game but the GMhas set the forum to Private. Maybe another one will start soon, or you might want to try some other systems in the meantime. :-)

Don't worry about being new. Everybody here is great and super helpful! Just have fun!

Greeting pal! I also LURVE The Adventure Zone. So much McElroy goodness. :) Welcome to GP and have a great time!

The podcasts are how I got here too. I listen to most of the same ones. The Board With Life play of the Lost Mines of Phandelver actually put me over the edge of getting a beginner box and starting an in person game. Of course that is super hard to keep going, especially with two children now. So GP is super great. I was super nervous about running games too, but that's how I started. I actually ran two before I ever played in my first game. Mostly because if you invite other people over and you bought the beginner box, it's sort of implied you are running the game. :)

Anyway. Trust me, just use GP for a bit and you will find it a great place. Welcome and have fun out there.

So I'm having a bit of trouble navigating here. I'd like to read along with some games to get started, but I can't seem to find them. Is there a list anywhere?

This is something that I need to address more, but for now, if you go to the forums (through the link at the top), and scroll down to the games section, you should see a toggle just above that says Show Public Games. If set to green, you'll see all public game forums (a lot, too much, at this point). I need to figure out a better mechanic for this, but I'm short on ideas. I welcome thoughts.

Thanks very much! Seems like a pretty obvious place for them to go now in hindsight. :)
