June 21st 1931. Providence, Rhode Island

Ma Shanks’ Boarding House, a three-story building, positioned at the edge of Federal Hill, near to the Italian neighborhood.
Prohibition is still in force, with the sale of alcohol illegal. The effects of the Depression are kicking in and everyone is hard pressed trying to make ends meet

Mr. James Gardiner, a recluse who lives in your boarding house, has not been seen or heard from for two days. Each of you has a reason to see if he is in his room. Through persuasion, bribes, or your own means, the landlady of this boarding house has been convinced to unlock the door and check on the tenant, while also letting you inside.

You have all gathered outside the room of Mr. James Gardiner. He’s not been seen for at least two days and everyone is getting concerned for his well-being. The Landlady rattles some keys, finding the one for Gardiner’s room.

After quietly pacing in the hallway a bit, William addresses the rest of the group saying, "This is probably going to be unpleasant. Hopefully, it won't take too long as we all have important business to attend to elsewhere." Inside, he's hoping that something frightful has happened, not because he has a fascination for the macabre, but because he wants real evidence that the strange lines of learning he's pursued might actually be real.
Jul 14, 2022 3:30 pm
"I have real work to do. Can we get this over with?"

Kathy puts on a tough face, but it's clear she wants into the room as much as her boarding-house fellows. Dressed in a simple shirt, men's pants, and tight-cropped hair, Kathy leans forward as the possibility of valuables or cash behind the door dances in her mind.

Keys still jangling a little, Edit looks sharply at William Morgan. "Unpleasant? What are you talking about? I'm sure he is completely fine!"

She turns to Katerina Skirgalia. "And if you have work then I suggest you go. There's no need for everyone to be involved. I'm sure everything will be fine."

Edith turns back to the door and inserts the key into the lock and turns it, pushing the door open.
Jul 14, 2022 11:43 pm
"Yes, let’s hope everything is okay. Perhaps he went on a trip, that’s not unheard of. Mr. Gardiner certainly isn’t expected to report his various coming and goings to us. It’s just that I lent him a few items which I need to retrieve for my store. Nothing more than that. A quick in and out to reclaim a couple of books." Humphrey rubs his hands together nervously. He’s clearly uncomfortable entering Mr. Gardiner’s room without permission but he simply has no other choice.
Jul 15, 2022 1:34 am
"Mrs. Costa, I am sure that any of us would be grateful that so many of our fellow boarders are interested in our communal wellbeing. After all we do all share so much about our lives here. Now let us see about Mr. Gardiner"
John is extremely happy to finally get to see the inside of Mr. Gardiner's room and learn about this man who may be secretly making alcohol. John's hands are firmly in his pockets to keep from showing them shaking with excitement.
Jul 15, 2022 7:04 am
The key is turned in the lock and the door is slowly opened.
From within comes the lingering smell of candles, long since burned out, and something sickly-sweet and copperlike. Looking in, you see it. Framed in the shafts of sunlight streaming through gaps in the curtains. A body!
The body is lying on a tarpaulin, stretched out on the floor. You can see blood. The man’s body and clothing are covered in blood. It looks as though he somehow fell over from a kneeling position. The body is wearing a green tweed coat and a brown sweater-vest—the clothes Mr. Gardiner usually wears. It must be Mr. Gardiner!
The scene is shocking. His head has been mutilated by knife cuts.

John looks closer and on the back of Gardiner's hands, on his arms and legs and across his blood-covered torso, scarification marks are present. They are shaped like small spirals. Looking closer, John finds these cover the entire body, seemingly acquired over months. The face and head, however, appear to be free of the older spiral scars.

Lying under the corpse is an obsidian blade. The blade lies in a pool of blood beneath the body.

Although the spirals don't mean anything to Humphrey, his eyes are drawn to the candles and a blood stained piece of paper that sits between them. Combined with the black candles, this all seems to be the accoutrements of some sort of gruesome ritual, however there is not enough information to determine the intended result. As the others gather around the body, William wanders into the bedroom section, partitioned by a large bookcase. Opening the doors of the wardrobe, he reveals clothes shoes and at the bottom, a locked wooden box.
Jul 19, 2022 12:27 am
The spirals on Mr. Gardiner’s hands and arms clearly seem significant but Humphrey can’t quite pin point why. He remembers seeing illustrations of spirals adorning ancient standing stones in Ireland from a book he once purchased but he didn’t think Mr. Gardiner had Irish heritage.
As he ruminates over spirals and standing stones, the bookseller notices a piece of paper covered with writing that looks vaguely familiar to him. He points out sheet and sheet to the others.
"We’ll, this is odd. I thought perhaps this was a suicide note but it’s written in Ancient Greek.
At first, Humphrey finds the text unintelligible but then he realizes he was trying to read the note upside down. He repositions himself to view the note from Mr. Gardiner’s perspective and tries once more to read it.

He feels slightly guilty about pilfering books from a dead friend but times are tough and Mr. Gardiner won't be needing them anytime soon.

Edith comes back into the room with a heavy heart. She's trying to hold back the tears, but seeing James on the floor and everyone going through his things makes her feel unbelievably sad.

Humphrey steps into the bedroom and looks at the bookcase. It's a finely carved piece with glass-fronted doors, either side of which are the busts of two flute-playing cherubs carved into the upright moldings that support the doors. All the woodwork is detailed in intricate scrollwork. There is a drawer at the bottom of the unit.

Humphrey opens the glass doors and scans through the books, many of which are on banking and finance,a few travel books on obscure places and some occult books including:

Myths and Legends of Ancient Greece and Rome,
by E.M. Berens.

The Interpretation of Dreams, by Sigmund Freud,

Mr. Gardiner's bookshelf is impressively crafted and clearly very expensive. The carvings adorning the it are delicate and clearly the work of a master artisan. Humphrey scans the shelves and quickly spots two of the books he lent Mr. Gardiner. Unfortunately, the most important and sought after volume is no where to be found. Humphrey takes a second look at the shelf, careful reading the spines of the book to make sure he hadn't missed anything but before long he finds himself staring at the disturbing squid human bookend.

"Why would anyone use a bookend like this?" he wonders to himself.
"Perhaps, it's a valuable antique?" he speculates while examining the sculpture for any indication of what this monster is called.

He'd always returned them in good shape and eager to discuss what he had read. Humphrey always had looked forward to those conversations. It was so nice to find someone who was also interested in esoteric subjects. And now, he'd never be able to talk to Mr. Gardiner again.

As Humphrey is about to step away from the bookshelf he notices to his left a nightstand with a desk lamp and a couple of books. On top is a slim journal and under it is an old-looking but familiar book.
Jul 30, 2022 4:25 pm
Edith looks more composed than she did earlier, but still very shaken. "No, Mr. Morris, thank you. I need to get back to Tommy. And the cats. Oh, poor Tommy!" she sniffles.
Jul 31, 2022 5:35 pm
"It’s unfortunate that Tommy happened to come by when he did. You don’t think he saw anything do you? I can’t imagine…" . Humphrey shakes his head with concern.
"I have an idea. I think you should go back to Tommy. I’ll brew up a pot of tea and bring it over to your apartment along with a stack of funny pages I’ve been saving for the boy. By the time he catches up on "Buck Rogers" and "Popeye" the police will have come and gone and he’ll have forgotten all about the catsup on your dress. John and William can keep watch over the room until the police arrive. We can trust them to keep anyone else out, isn’t that right?"
Aug 1, 2022 12:14 am
Edith looks unconvinced.

"I think I better stay until the police get here. Although your offer to bring the funnies to Tommy is real nice. Would you go by and take him tea and the funnies for me now?"

Feeling a bit rushed all of a sudden, William heads back in the room and tries to pretend as if there isn't a corpse on the floor and spies the cabinets on the wall. I'm assuming you don't want me to mention the demise of Mr. Gardiner?" The bookseller fiddles with his glasses nervously before continuing.

"I must say, I don't enjoy the prospect of misleading young Tommy. I fear I'll make a hash of the excuse and make things worse. This really is the type of thing best handled by someone with more maternal instincts. But, I'll give it a go, Damn the torpedoes, into the breach, etcetera, etcetera."

There's a clunk as a jar of pennies falls out of a cupboard and hits William on the head (-1 hp). The jar then hits the counter, smashing and sending pennies flying everywhere.
Aug 3, 2022 1:40 pm
The sound of the jar breaking, as well as the accompanying mess make William feel a little self-conscious. "Sorry," he says while massaging himself where the jar hit him. He makes tries pushing the pennies sside with his foot.
Aug 3, 2022 1:49 pm
A dragging sound on the floor interrupts your investigation. The mutilated body of the room's tenant shifts its limbs and suddenly lurches into a standing position. You look in terror as the flesh around Mr. Gardiner's head begins to peel, the flesh spiraling downward like some horrific party trick with an apple. The blood-slicked skull turns to look around, malevolence in its lidless eyes.

Investigation is a huge part of Call of Cthulhu, searching crime scenes, digging up books and interviewing people but the other side is facing off against the horrors and those that serve them. Not only should you expect to die, but you might also go insane!

There are two types of insanity that can be experienced in facing the Mythos.

Temporary Insanity comes about if you lose 5+ from one roll.

Indefinite Insanity happens if you lose one fifth of your sanity in one game day. Below is what each character has lost so far and the threshold at which Indefinite insanity occurs.

Both result in a Bout of Madness and I'll detail that if/when we reach it.

Edith 1(12)
William 1 (12)
John 1 (10)

Normally I play out Sanity breaks privately bt as you guys are learning the system, I'll do it publicly.

So Humphrey has succeeded his INT check, meaning he fully comprehends what he is seeing, triggering Temporary Insanity. Initially, this results in a Bout of Madness, where the player loses all self-control.

On the upside, the character cannot lose further sanity during the Bout. The Bout lasts for 1d10 rounds and I roll to determine how it manifests...

Effect: Psychosomatic disability: Humphrey suffers psychosomatic blindness for the 5 rounds

Humphrey's vision turns red and he can see nothing. Otherwise can act normally.

Humphrey is an educated fellow and what he is seeing doesn’t make sense. Dead and mutilated corpses cannot move. This is a fact. He must be hallucinating or something.

Desperate to clear his vision he takes off his glasses and begins rubbing his eyes vigorously. Maybe, a little to vigorously because when he opens his eyes again he can only see red. "My eyes!"he screams adding his voice to the sounds of terror around him. "I can’t see!"

He stumbles around with his arms outstretched looking for something to grab hold of to orient himself.
OOC:
I’m not sure what Humphrey can do at this point. I suppose he’s groping around for something like and umbrella or cane to swing around and try to defend himself, if that’s even possible. I’ll do a luck roll to move things along but feel free to ignore it.

As Edith's paperweight hits the thing in the arm and there is suddenly a flash of pale blue light, the spiral scars that cross what were once the arms, legs and torso of Gardiner begin to glow and the stone falls harmlessly to the ground.

Humphrey reaches around blindly but finds nothing to grab.

Sep 27, 2022 2:59 pm
Humphrey emerges from the bedroom with a handful of books in one arm and a revolver in his other hand. He is clearly shaken and tries desperately to avert his gaze from the body.

"I don’t know… this is impossible. I think that we might find some answers or at least clues as to what he was doing before his death in these books. He was very curious about the occult and specifically this book about dreams. I came to retrieve them for another interested customer but now I’m not so sure if I should part with them." Humphrey looks at Edith who has blood and viscera covering her hands and arms
"But, we have a more immediate problem. The police are on their way and what used to look like a suicide now looks like a murder scene. No one in will believe a story about the dead coming back to life. If we don’t figure something out , we’re all going to be spending the rest of our lives in the clink. I guess we can’t burn this place down? I guess we need to run and hide out somewhere?"

"Running will just make us look more guilty. If we all tell the same story, and the police see all of this...evil occult paraphernalia, I doubt we would be held responsible." Nevertheless, John wipes the walking cane clean of any evidence and returns it to Mrs. Madeira.

You hear the banging of the door downstairs, the police have arrived.
Sep 29, 2022 6:54 am
John opens the door. "Did you bring a priest with you?" he asks looking at the police on the doorstep.
Sep 29, 2022 10:10 am
OOC:
The main door is a few floors down so the rest of you have a few minutes before he lets the police in. Any last actions?
Sep 29, 2022 4:34 pm
William hastily unrolls the now dead-again corpse and tries to make sure he's not wearing any residue from the body. "I know it's foolish, but we can't leave him like this." William takes one last look around to see if there might be an obvious clue as to what happened here, or at least something that might help him understand.
OOC:
I know this is somewhat futile, but from the center of the room next to the body, could I have William do a quick check around the room to see if he spots something that might be affiliated with the transformation of their associate?
Sep 29, 2022 5:04 pm
OOC:
I don't think William made an occult roll, so you can do that as you take in the candles, pentagram etc.
Sep 29, 2022 5:34 pm
Humphrey is dumbstruck by John’s casual reaction to the arrival of the police downstairs. "Running will make us look more guilty…as if we don’t already look guilty enough to be given life behind bars."

Resigned to his fate, Humphrey decides to return to his room and await the police there. Might as well enjoy his last few moments of freedom from the comfort of his armchair. Perhaps, he could enjoy that cup of tea he mentioned before.

"I will be in my rooms if the police wish to question me."he tells Edith. But, before he leaves watches William unroll the corpse from the tarp "Technically that is tampering with a crime scene, old chum. But, all things considered, I think we can leave a few things out of our conversation with the gumshoes." The bookseller puts the occult books under his arm and heads to his room.
OOC:
I’m assuming Humphrey can get to his room without running into the police. If he can he will put the gun and two books on a side table by his armchair. He will make a pot of tea and page through the book of dreams while he waits for the water to boil. I’ll roll a spot hidden to see if he notices anything the of interest relating to Gardiner’s use of the book. (Notes in the margin, dog eared pages etc)

OOC:
Yes, sorry I got confused and lost track of all the books. I thought the book in Greek was on the nightstand but I guess it was the journal. My thought was that Humphrey would turn over the less valuable books to the police but try to keep the valuable one - maybe hide it in the kitchen. Humphrey would probably like to look through the dream journal first before the police arrive but we’d have to retcon my post. I’m fine with whatever you think works best/is the most fair.

Edith gasps and seems to come back to herself. She looks away from the corpse and sobs a little, but seems to be lost in her grief.

Before Humphrey can leave she plucks at his sleeve. "Would you check on Timmy? I think he could use tea and those funnies right about now." She tries to smile, but it's a pitiful try.

She straightens up and stands at the door. "I'll wait here to let them in."

It's obvious what she's done.

Back in his apartment Humphrey gathers the stack of funny pages he collected and puts a pot of water on the stove. He takes the dust jacket off of a copy of "Fanny Farmers Cookbook" an puts it over the hardcover of the valuable book in ancient Greek. He slides the now hidden book onto a shelf of other cookbooks in his small pantry and shuts the door. Next, he places plain copy of the cookbook on a pile of random tomes he has stacked around his living quarters. With that finished, he returns to the stove and turns on the burner beneath the tea kettle. As he waits for the water to boil he flips through Mr. Gardiner's dream journal to see if he can find any possible explanation for what the man was doing. An perhaps something to help prove our innocence? he muses.

William straightens himself up, and makes sure he's as presentable as possible before heading out the door. "We should probably meet back up to go over what just happened," he says to the others. "Maybe in a day or two for a coffee?"

Shouts of "What’s going on here?" precede the arrival of two policemen with guns drawn, albeit too late.

Over the following weeks, you piece together the truth of the situation. James Gardiner enjoyed a vivid and fantastical dream life but somehow lost his ability to dream. He sought occult solutions to regain his dreams and found a spell in a tome that he believed would open the way for his dreams to return.
Unfortunately, the spell and the book were cursed. Some strange entity from another world tricked Gardiner into performing the rituals he found in the tome. One prepared his body to become a vessel for the foul entity while the other led to his death, sending poor Gardiner’s soul into oblivion. His empty body could then be possessed by the entity—just as you all discovered.

During the fight, some of you had a brush with insanity and still cannot explain the dreamlike and nightmarish visions experienced. Thanks to the ingenuity of William, and the aggression of Mrs Costa the body was damaged enough that the creature could no longer inhabit, but Gardiner was gone forever. Ma Shanks was not impressed to see the state of her carpet but you all agreed it was a small price to pay.
OOC:
Due to your timely actions, you can feel proud to have played your part in foiling the schemes of a monster from beyond. Your surviving investigators are each awarded 1D6 Sanity points. Well done! Perhaps this incident has changed your investigator. If there are dark and unwholesome things out there that wish to break into our world, will your steadfast investigator join the fight to stop them?

After a scenario, you also get the chance to roll to improve your skills. Anything that you used (not including Pushed or Lucked rolls), make a roll and if you fail (roll over the skill) you gain 1d10 points in the skill. Below is the record of skills, if I missed any, feel free to shout up.
John - First aid
Brawl
Humphrey - Occult
Spot Hidden
English Language
Edith - Throw
Brawl
William - Brawl

Thank you everyone for participating, sorry it dragged a little longer than expected, and especially thank you to Nezzeraj for jumping in at the last minute to fill the gap.

I hope you all enjoyed it, especially those new to Cthulhu and if there's still anything about the game you don't understand, please feel free to ask questions.

Thanks for running it, it was a neat adventure. See you all around in future games!

Thank you for the game! It was a neat adventure, and too short, although we took our time. :)

My last run lasted exactly one month but that was daily posts. It's a good taster and refreshing for me compared to the campaigns I run over a number of years.

Feel free to make your character advance rolls here, especially if your characters have a future!
Oct 7, 2022 6:21 pm
Thanks for running the adventure for us. I enjoy the system, though it's a little tough to have a character go temporarily insane for weeks IRL on PbP. But, that's how dice fell - Humphrey was shockingly bad at rolling.

Thank you for running the game! I appreciated it and had a chance to explore something I was less familiar with. I also appreciate your knowledge of the system.

You're all welcome. If you'd like to remove your characters for future use, go ahead as when I shut the game down you might not be able to access them.
