The Tower of Vergil

After receiving a telepathic summons from a dragonborn wizard by the name of Vergil, you have made the trek south to the Desert of Adriok. Vergil's summons asked for your help to recover a treasure in return for whatever reward you desire, be it gold, magic, information, or something else. The travel was long and rough, but now the wizard's tower looms ahead of you, casting a long shadow over the dunes. Standing on the surrounding dunes, each of you can see two other figures making their way to the tower. Your approaches are interrupted by the sight of a figure emerging from the tower, awaiting your arrivals.

"Come." The voice of Vergil booms in each of your minds. "I have eagerly waited for you three to arrive."
Aug 1, 2022 8:47 pm
The inspector eyes the others, but assumes they must have been summoned as well. Who else could be here?!? As we gather more to a group coming to Vergil, Flame says simply, "I'm inspector Flame." It is rather obvious why he is here, and he doesn't feel the need to elaborate at the moment.

Dagen (pronounced like dagger, minus the r, plus a n) looks at the others walking, and he thinks, Oh, telepathy! Is this wizard really so powerful, or is he of gem ancestry, like me?

Above him about 60 feet is his trusty companion, Crookshanks. He eyes the others that he sees in the distance. That little kobold doesn't seem that scary, but Dagen is a flighty kind of dragonborn. When he gets close, he tells Shanks, Keep your distance, and keep an eye out for danger.

He then says, "Hi, fellow. I am the fabled merchant Dagen Glytterglide. I see you have been summoned to this place, as well.

"It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance."

Flame says as he eyes Dragen and his flying pet (Crookshanks) Seems Vergil has unusual reasons for his summoning. But I'm not one to judge.
Aug 2, 2022 7:11 am
OOC:
My PC is not very much talkative at this scene, so I've marked his thoughts in italic to complement his limited speech in bold
Black cloak hides most of the white Kobold's skin, but face is cover with dirt. From the distance Keks keep from others his skin color is hardly noticeable.
One, two, three, four Kex count creatures, he puts an arrow into his short-bow ready to shoot if anyone shows sign of aggression.
Ah, this is probably Vergil's pet spying on us Keks loos at the Crookshanks Just one arrow and wizard is blind....

He put bow away when hear others introducing.
I'm third of Vergil's summons and I believe we will indeed need to cooperate on his behalf. Nut sure how is that a pleasure, however. he say and still keep his distance. Dragonborn have a pleasure meeting Kobold? What would that mean? Is it a threat? Nevermind, he is summoned by Vergil and I will have to risk to join this company

He hate dunes for absence of a place to hide. As a Kobold he hates to be travelling during day-time, but he had no choice in the situation.
Name Keks, he adds incidentally and start walking toward the tower
Aug 2, 2022 10:47 am
"Ah Keks! Wonderful to make your acquaintance, as well!

"Your complexion is so beautiful! I love that color against that cloak you wear! When we finish this task, I can find a great piece that will complement your ensemble well!"

He puts his fingers to his mouth and does a chef’s kiss.

He also looks to the inspector and says, "And your color is such a…bland shade of red. But, no matter! I’ll find you a piece of jewelry that ought to draw more people your way! You will be a vision when I’m through with you."

He then takes a moment, and says, "As I mentioned, I am the famed jeweler Dagen Glytterglide, and as you can suppose, I help people look their best!

"What do you both excel in?"
Aug 2, 2022 4:47 pm
Flame says, Dagen, You be a best man for a court. Appears Flame takes note of Dagen flourish.

I. Inspector Flame. Really just tries to enforce that which the court wishes. as he introduces himself some to Keks.

He further throws a thought out to see if any of the two know anything, This Vergil. Has either of you met him?

See that Keks is a touch defensive still, And you Keks. Do put that shortbow away. I much rather not discover this wizard's defenses.

I excel at being weirdo. I appreciate but I prefer inconspicuous over beautiful. A pity i did fail with my outfit but thanks for being honest.
Keks visibly relaxes and comes closer puting bow on the back. He looks at Crookshanks

he still think it's wizards pet
Hi Vergil ! Stop spying on us!
He turns back to Flame and Dagen: What do YOU want from him? Kwoledge, money or magic?
OOC:
not right away but after some time Keks does share his proffessional profile mostly related to "information gathering" and "object extraction" as he refer to spying and stealing things. Indirectly he also mention covert ops and sabotage

As each of you makes your way towards the tower, the sight of Vergil becomes much clearer. He stands at a height of six feet and wears a set of dull gray robes over his deep blue scales. An ancient and tattered tome is connected to his waistbelt by a thin silver chain. He extends his arms outwards in a welcoming gesture, his amulets and rings clinking and clattering all the while.

"I thank you for coming to meet with me. Each of you bears certain skills and talents that make you suited to the task at hand. Ahh - but I have been rude." He bows and, as he reaches the bottom of his bow, turns his head up towards you. "I am Vergil. Please, we should enter my tower before we discuss business - better to be away from any potentially prying eyes and ears." He stands and, with a flick of his wrist, the door to his sandstone tower creaks inwards, revealing a room set with a table, four chairs, and a fireplace. "Take a seat - or stand, I do not mind." Vergil takes a seat at the head of the table.
Aug 2, 2022 10:02 pm
Dagen whistles up, and the owl disappears. He then walks in and takes a seat at the table.
Aug 3, 2022 12:28 am
Thoughts on what stand till what is being requested. By sounds whatever is offered must be quite a lot. So, I'm rather open. He motions to continue to the tower.

Upon sight and meeting Virgel, Flame keeps quiet and moves in and takes a seat saying, "Are we all that you have summoned." to get matter clearer.

Keks takes a seat
Aug 3, 2022 7:54 pm
Vergil smiles as the three of you each take a seat in front of him. "Yes, you three are the ones I have thusly chosen for the task at hand. Other candidates had been... considered, but you three have certain intrinsic qualities that make you rightly suited to what I have in mind." He snaps his fingers. "Speaking of, I suppose it would be prudent to discuss your job, would it not? The basics are as follows: there is a ruined keep three days march to the southeast of my tower. Hidden inside the keep is, supposedly, an occult tome. Embossed on the front of the tome is an hourglass emblem inlaid with silver filigree. I require this tome for future study and I am willing to pay fairly for its recovery. Now, the questions fall to you. Is there any information on the job that you require as of now, or shall we just discuss your payments before jumping further into this?"
Aug 4, 2022 1:18 am
Any idea of the difficulties we may or should encounter to get the tome and is the tome safe to carry?
Aug 4, 2022 6:05 am
Keks looks at Flame and think .. difficulties, I love difficulties. But he is suspicious about how little is the wizard sharing.

You just told us we 3 were carefully chosen for the job, so this is more than a delivery task and you know much much more about it. How much of your knowledge about the keep, the tome and the sources of your information is required to reduce our chances of failure? ... I mean - I guess you don't want us to fail! Do you?
Keks is looking at the wizard's reaction - who knows maybe this is all fake and wizard just want to sacrifice them in the keep over some dark ritual. In a moment he continues

You have the information and you are supposedly Keks try to replicate wizard's tongue when say last word
smarter than us. I trust you to be able to judge how much information we require, since you know our qualities, don't you?

Nevertheless. I never been in a keep. Could you describe a keep to me please? How big it the one we have to search? Do you possibly have a map of it? At least a map of similar keeps?
Aug 4, 2022 3:06 pm
Dagen listens intently at Vergil’s speech, as well as that of his two companions (?), then he ponders for a moment (which seems out of place for someone so gregarious as he), and then he says, "Three days’ journey, you say? Well, seems a bit far. Is it also in this desert, or is it in a more temperate location?

"I echo the questions and concerns of my fellows, Flame and Keks; without further details, this seems like a fools’ errand. And I don’t fancy myself a fool.

"I wish to know more about the tome itself. What is it, and for what do you seek it? Who is in possession of the tome currently? Are there any obstacles that we should be aware of in obtaining this book for you?

"Is it small enough to keep in a pack? Are there any rivals or creatures who guard or pursue this same tome that we should be prepared to contend with?"
Aug 5, 2022 2:12 am
Vergil first looks towards Flame."The tome is safe to carry." His gaze slowly shifts to Keks.

"You are correct in assuming that this is more than a delivery. It is also a test. Do well and I’ll be sure to keep your names in mind for future jobs. As for knowing more, it is true that I have handpicked you all. Ones as sneaky as you two," He looks towards Keks and Dagen, "are useful in all situations. I’m certain that the magical aptitudes of Flame and Dagen will also come in handy. As for difficulties, I can not equip you with much information. The tome is of occult origins, and as such I would find it unsurprising if cultists and their ilk were to guard it, both physically and magically."

He pauses for a moment before snapping a finger and magically producing the image of a stronghold onto the table. "This, Keks, is what a keep looks like. Although the one you’re heading to is in disrepair."

He then looks towards Dagen. "Now for your questions. The keep is further into the desert. The tome is just that - an arcane manuscript that I desire for my research. The information I have used to track this tome places it at the keep when it had not yet fallen into ruin and thus I am unsure who or what would currently possess it, though my assumption would be cultists of some type. The tome should be small enough to keep in a pack.
Aug 5, 2022 2:43 am
"So, let me get this job straight: it’s a simple snatch-and-grab job, with a safety bonus if we get in and out with no one being the wiser?

"That’s seems doable.

"Now is the discussion of payment. What do you propose, sir? What’s this time worth to you?"
Aug 5, 2022 3:07 am
I was thinking that payment will be when we return the tome. So, any difficulties we have should be well rewarded for. Although some upfront coinage is welcome.
Aug 5, 2022 12:10 pm
Dagen listens to Flame’s suggestion, and comments: "Do the deed, and then request payment? You are shrewd, Inspector!"

He smiles a large smile, and then says, "Let’s go with Mr. Flame’s suggestion, wizard Vergil. Thank you!"
Aug 5, 2022 6:59 pm
I believe Vergil were about to discuss payment. Vergil, what's your offer fir the test as you call it?
OOC:
Keksus not interested in a coin. He us actually trying to get some insight into wizard's motive . Do he really need the tome? For me as player it sounds like a fake task designedto test the party. Is that what it is ? Is Keks able to understand that?
Aug 6, 2022 4:14 pm
"Yes, I think that this sounds agreeable. I shall pay you each, say, 50 gold pieces up front to retain your services and then we shall discuss more rewards after the task is done? I do however understand that one of you is not interested in material wealth, so perhaps we should discuss an alternative to me just handing you gold - unless you’ll still take that to hold you to the job."
OOC:
Keks can make an insight check if you’d like to ascertain more information on all that stuff.
Aug 6, 2022 5:03 pm
I'm good. I prefer people to owe me.
Keks thinks I am able to collect the debt. .
I am good to go
OOC:
Keks would only ensure team get a reasonably precise direction toward the keep and will eagerly start the journey
Aug 6, 2022 6:54 pm
I believe 50 gold coin is reasonable. He looks to the others. If this is good then we shall be leaving soon.
Aug 7, 2022 10:02 am
I am amenable. Thank you, kind Vergil. We must be off.
Aug 7, 2022 10:17 pm
Vergil nods his head and pulls out a coin purse. He counts out the hundred gold - fifty for both Flame and Dagen - before providing more precise directions to the ruins of the keep.

"Good luck on your journey. Think about what rewards you may enjoy for your services while you’re out." He smiles.
Aug 8, 2022 5:41 am
Keks note where Vergil keeps his coin purse. See you! he smiles back and silently leaves.
OOC:
Keks has very good idea about the reward, but just as he Vergil is testing them he is testing Vergil. He will not share the reason he were so desperate to become wizard's minion before learning more about the wizard. So far Vergil has been less than willing to share anything about his motives. Keks hops this will change when they will have the tome

I assume I roll skill check as usual and roll psionic die separately. Then DM tells if that additional 1d6 turned failure into success - in that case I will mark one die expanded in my character sheet.
Alternatively I could simply roll 1d20+1d6+modifier and DM will need to do the reverse math in case of success.

Keks feel uncomfortable in the desert. He is used to hide in caves by day and travel by night. He talks as little as required to get group moving.
OOC:
I am ready to fight and leave party talking to the moment we get into the keep: both because we would have a subject to discuss one know how it looks like inside and because we hate 2 out or 3 PCs kobolds who should feel more comfortable indoors.

Alright in that case I’ll just push forward into the encounter! Also, Keks will need to mark off one of his psionic dice since he used it to pass the check.
The travel through the desert dunes over the past two days has been hot and harsh, with sandstorms threatening to appear at any moment. Your destination is, supposedly, not much farther away - perhaps only a few hours. However, through the shimmering haze of heat and the dancing clouds of dust, Dagen and Keks notice four hunched humanoid forms - clearly attempting and failing to hide in the rolling sand clouds.

They are approximately 100 feet away, in a dip between dunes. You stand at the top of a large dune overlooking the group of four but can make out no more information on who they are or what they have due to the clouds of dust. What do you do?
Aug 10, 2022 10:14 pm
Dagen will send his familiar ahead and tell the two companions, "Let me send my familiar ahead to see what’s going on."

He sends Shanks forward, and then let’s his senses fade into those of his familiar.
OOC:
What weapons are they holding, and what kind(s) of humanoid creatures are they?
Aug 10, 2022 10:31 pm
As your senses become one with those of your familiar, you see through the clouds of dust. The creatures are brown dragonborn. All four wear studded leather armor and have shortswords in hand. In addition, they each have three javelins stowed as well.
OOC:
Let me know if there’s any other information you’d want on what they have/are. Depending on what it is though I might have your familiar (or you, I’m unsure how it works exactly) roll perception due to the dust cloud though.

Inspector Flame, One of a kind. After traveling with Flame, he seems studious, insensitive and harsh. As well as borderline violent. He considered himself as a bit of an athlete and is a man looking for gold. You judge he probably doesn't have very many friends, but rather good for the ones he has.

Your quite sure that he really doesn't like being outside the city. He just survives elsewhere. Although he can see in the dark doesn't make him a fan of being underground either. He doesn't like the brightness of light. He is an indoors man.

He is in fact with papers an inspector. Claims to have done that for years. He doesn't talk much about that. He does have cards and dice with him and is an easy mark to game.

He always wearing his chain armor and favors his rapier which is fallowed up with handaxes. You know besides obviously being a warrior type that surprisingly that he can cast magic as well. He likes magic missile.

Hello there! Keks cries at the figures who have obviously spotted them already.
He also whispers to party I'm trying to win us time. Let Dagen inspect them. and hoping for Flame to play along he rises his unarmed hands and continue: Don't be afraid. We mean no trouble! No offence! Just want to pass by. What's your business here?
Aug 11, 2022 8:12 am
Flame takes note of the figures and Keks actions as well as his whisper. He decides there is no need of action just yet and stands there with his hands open and available.
Aug 11, 2022 9:04 pm
Through the dust, Shanks can make out faint military markings on all of the dragonborn’s armor.

One steps forwards slightly and calls back up to Keks. "We are travelling on official business. That is all you need to know. Who are you three?"
The dragonborn all remove themselves from the obscuring dust cloud, revealing more clearly who they are. Their light packs seem to be filled quite heavily on their backs.
Aug 11, 2022 11:06 pm
"We are officials traveling on official business, as well.

"We do not wish to delay you or worry you. We will be on our way.

"Thank you."

Dagen bows, and then heads in the direction they were in.

He whistled, and Shanks lands backwards on his shoulder.

The dragonborn who spoke eyes the three of you suspiciously as you talk and begin to continue your journey. He whispers something to his companions before they too set off on their travel.

After a few more hours of travel, you arrive at your destination. Approximately 500 feet away from you stands the remains of an ancient stronghold. Sand blows about, periodically uncovering tiny fragments of strange buried items. The stronghold is built squarely, with some small cracks and breaks in the walls allowing for entrance. Also, the rotted remains of a wooden gate cover what once would have been the only entrance to the stronghold. Faint noises come from within the keep, though you do not see anyone outside or on the walls at first glance.

Aug 13, 2022 7:30 am
Could anyone remind me why does Vergil believe the place is not all looted and we have any chance to find the book in there waiting just for us? Keks slows down and look at Dagen and Flame. Keks is used to only plunder during night time. Who knows what creatures made their lairs in the keep? Nevertheless he don't want to show his hesitation to the party.

Just sending Shanks to look over the walls and such or do you want to send Shanks into the keep?

I would want him to do a perimeter scan first, and then if there are openings, to get a closer look at the second pass.
Aug 17, 2022 3:44 pm
OOC:
Shanks notices no living creatures on the walls or outer grounds, however there are a few scattered corpses of robed dragonborn. Some are in black robes and others wear gray or white robes. The noises within the keep are more readily interpreted from Shanks’s new position, allowing him to understand that they are chants and songs echoing from deep within the keep, possibly amplified by some sort of spell to allow for them to be heard from outside.
Would you want Shanks to enter the keep to do some scouting or just return?
Aug 17, 2022 4:38 pm
OOC:
Starting with the seemingly most viable entrance, I want him to take a quick peek inside, assess dangers for about 6 seconds, and then fly out, and then do the same for the other entrances.

The chanting ceases as the door creaks open, allowing both your party and a group of four black-robed dragonborn to see each other. Between you and the dragonborn lays a large bonfire. An older-looking dragonborn, standing slightly further back than the others, stretches out a clawed finger and levels it in your direction.

Keks is stepping as he does so (let's say 15 feet back)

Dagen sees and hears the dragonborn on the other side of the door. He thinks quickly, moves closer to the door (to roughly 20 feet from the door), casts Mage Hand invisibly, and then closes the door.
OOC:
Move action: Move to about 20 feet away from the door
Action: Cast Mage Hand
Bonus Action: Close the door with the Mage Hand
[ +- ] Mage Hand Legerdemain
[ +- ] Cantrip: Mage Hand (Conjuration)
He says telepathically to each of his friends, "They're going to have to come through that door to get us. Let's use it to our advantage."

You hear movement from behind the door. The croaking voice of the older dragonborn intones some ancient words of power before the sound of a blade being drawn from its sheath emanates from within the room. As the noise fades, you hear the sound of boots hitting the floor as someone runs to the door.
OOC:
Old Dragonborn: Cast a spell, readied an action
Lackey #3: Dash

Am I right to interpret this text as being that the lackey #3 runs to the door, but does not hit the door?

I sort of imagined that he was rushing towards the door, and it closed as he tried to run the the doorway, but not sure if that occurred or if that was just how I cinematically hoped it would go.

Flame just stands a bit from the door with his rapier waiting for it to open and him to charge and attack whomever that is of them.
OOC:
Just a ready action.

Correct, he just dashed towards the door after it was closed.
The sound of two more men's boots hitting the stone floor emanates from within the room, stopping as they approach the door.

Keks steps back a bit more and mentally prepares for the imminent violence.
OOC:
Also ready action - throw psychic blade at any enemy when he is in melee range with Flame to be able to use sneak attack
Sep 4, 2022 1:14 am
Flame now waits for the enemy to open the door, while thinking this is a mess.

Dagen thinks, and says telepathically to his companions: Okay, let’s try something. Be ready to fight!

He moves to the wall, thinks of the space on the other side of the wall, above where his own head would be, and he manifests his owl familiar, Shanks.

He tells Shanks telepathically, Give ‘em hell, Shanks!

He urges Shanks to pester those right next to the door, and then to head to the main spell caster.

He then uses his bonus action to cause the mage hand to open the door quickly!
OOC:
Move: move against the wall, about 15 feet away from the door.

Action: cause Shanks to appear from his pocket dimension to the other side of the wall, and tells Shanks to pester the guys by the door first, and then the caster.

Bonus Action: use mage hand to open the door.

The door opens quickly, revealing Shanks harassing the three dragonborn by the door. Distracted, they are momentarily surprised by the unexpected opening of the door allowing you to take advantage of the current situation.
OOC:
Keks and Flame take their readied actions if they desire and then initiative resumes.
Sep 9, 2022 12:21 am
Hopefully this helps you guys take out a few of them quickly, Dagen says telepathically to his companions.
Sep 9, 2022 12:33 am
OOC:
Flame's ready action doesn't activate with the door opening. It only activated if they charged us. So, he has to wait for INIT.
Sep 9, 2022 4:58 am
The blue blade previously prepared in Keks hand hurls at the enemy closest to to Flame.
OOC:
Assuming it is within 5 feet of it Kobold have an advantage

Rolls

Psychic Blades: Attack (advantage) - Attack - (2d20H1+6)

Psychic Blades: Attack - Damage - (1d6+4)

(4) + 4 = 8

Sneak Attack - (2d6)

(62) = 8

As the door is opened, Keks hurls a psychic blade at the nearest dragonborn. Unfortunately, he recovered his wits faster than the others and hastily sidestepped the incoming energy blade. With his evasive maneuver complete, you can peer further into the room. You notice what looks to be a large, magical axe suspended in the air swinging like a glowing pendulum about ten feet from the door. The older dragonborn smiles and flicks his wrist, sending the swinging axe directly towards Flame. As he does so, he also cries out a few words of power, causing a black flame to descend from the ceiling towards Keks.
OOC:
Bonus action: Move spiritual weapon and attack Flame
Action: Cast sacred flame on Keks. Keks will need to make a dexterity saving throw for me.
With the axe past him, the dragonborn who dodged the psychic blade charges forward, blade drawn. "Die scum!"
OOC:
Flame may now take his readied action as Lackey #3 charges him.

Rolls

Spiritual Weapon Attack (Flame) - (1d20+3)

(6) + 3 = 9

Spiritual Weapon Damage (Flame) - (1d8+1)

(8) + 1 = 9

Sacred Flame (DC 11 Dex Save) Damage on a Fail - (1d8)

(4) = 4

Sep 10, 2022 11:37 pm
OOC:
Ready attack!
Flame sees the dragonborn charging him and quickly moves to do him with his rapier while keeping his shield up for defense against the strange magic axe.
OOC:
Rapier attack succeeds with a 24 and does 11 points of piecing damage.

Flame's rapier strikes true, stabbing the charging dragonborn in the throat - killing him instantly. As his body falls to the floor, Keks deftly dodges the mote of black flame before it strikes him.

Dagen will draw his shortbow and nock an arrow.

He will call out telepathically to Shanks: Mess with the dragonborn closest to us. Make two short screeches when you start to mess with them, and I will peak out and shoot the guy.
OOC:
Dagen is readying his action. When Shanks makes his two short screech sounds, Dagen will peek through the door, fire at the dragonborn, and then slink back against the wall beside the door, in order to be out of line-of-sight.

Hoping to get advantage for having Shanks essentially perform a help action on my attack by messing with and distracting the dragonborn that I will attack.

Flame closes on the next dragonborn and attacks.
