Chapter 2 - The Abreia Job - OOC Discussion

OOC:
Raise Boz up to level 5
Aug 19, 2022 11:27 pm
OOC:
Is it possible to refuel at one of the gas giants before we land on the planet?
Aug 20, 2022 1:54 am
Of course. Where you go and what you do is up to the players. It will just add time onto the journey. Per intra-system travel rules (p 111) each planet counts as a 'region' and travel between regions takes 48 hours / spike drive rating - so it will take 16 hours to get from system edge to gas giant and then another 16 hours from gas giant to Abreia. Feel free to post IC that this happens if that's what you decide to do.

Phozdex says:
OOC:
Boz is going to make a run of weapons and sensor systems with the time he has. Unless Skipper has a task. Boz's thinking is same as Xander wanting to be able to make a quick escape. Also to Xander, Boz would like to see if it is possible to put together a backpack for PI to be taken out. I would make it hardened to a degree but light as possible. Also depending on what your plans are for the mini generator, we took out of the security mech from Savannah Tower I could mod it as a power supply for PI. Boz would also be interested in either modding the rifle we got from the same mech for mobile use or mount it to the ship for close in planet side defense.
Regarding Mods, building equipment, etc... I'm looking at the rules on page 90-91 where it says "Mods require costly after-market parts that can be expensive to acquire, and the most sophisticated ones require actual pretech salvage stripped from advanced ancient tech. Normally, only TL4 gear can be effectively modded..."

You'll need a "well-equipped" TL4 workshop (which I think you are close to finishing or have finished the buildout for - whether it is 'well equipped' depends on the toolsets and spare parts and materials (see equipment section) you've stockpiled.

When modding, a tech decides whether the device is to be jury-rigged, normal, or mastercrafted. Jury-rigged is assembled out of cheap scrap. Cheaper to make than to buy, but require constant attention to keep operating. Normal devices work about as well as anything you buy from space-amazon, but are typically more expensive to make than to buy due to economies of scale. Mastercraft gear is carefully built to support the tech's own innovation. Extremely expensive, but easier to mod and maintain.

Building gear usually takes a month (vehicle) a week (weapon, armor, or portable device) having an assistant with Fix-0 halves the time.

For the Backpack: I'll allow a "jury-rigged" device to house Pi, assuming you started back when you left Basajaun. Pi is an 'artifact' class of 'equipment' (firmly TL5 if not higher) so any permanent portable housing without potential dangers (like sand getting into the housing, for instance) and constant upkeep is going to require "pretech salvage" parts. Also, you do not (to my knowledge at least, correct me if wrong) currently have any person-sized sensors to connect to him, so while in 'backpack mode" Pi will be blind. His current sensor suite is attached to and designed for the ship and thus not portable.

For the mini-reactor - this is also high tech bordering on TL5. It too will need "pretech salvage" and not insignificant dedicated time devoted to designing and building a harness, especially connecting to Pi. The last thing Pi or you want is something to go wrong and fry it and/or Pi.

For the anti-personnel gun and attaching to the ship - you can, but it is (a) not designed for the void of space and thus prone to freezing over, jamming, etc if just tacked onto the exterior of the ship, or (b) you're going to have to design some sort of device to deploy the gun from an internal housing - which will require cutting into the hull of the Kukuri. You'll need time, materials, and a shipyard.

All of this is potentially feasible but will require more than just a skill check or two while performing other tasks operating a ship mid voyage. Namely, time and rare parts.

Speaking of parts, does the Kukuri currently have spare parts for field maintenance and repairs?

I do not disagree with any of that. I was just wanting to through out the ideas. I knew they could not be done all at once as other parts and materials would be needed. Boz has level 2 in Tinker which give bonuses when it comes to mods and maintaining them and with the new focus Specialist with Trade I wanted to lay down some projects that can help further the his goals of improving the ship. The first step was getting the workshop started. Boz is all for taking jobs where we have the chance to acquire more TL5 tech or pre-tech artifacts. I figured the bulk of Boz's time before we get to plant side will be repairs/maintenance. We probably do need to build out our spare parts/material horde. Which was another reason for taking the focus I did this last level up. Now if we can hang around a space port long enough to put it to use.

Yep. I was just laying out expectations and getting my own thoughts organized anew since I had to go back and reread that section of the rules.

I went ahead and moved the plot forward to keep things moving while I had the time to post. If Lilac wants to have done something specific during the transit, feel free to post about it. :)

Also, you'll have roughly 5 days of uninterrupted operations during the trip and getting to Nioba, which is good enough to get some rest and heal up. Remember to regain your hit points equal to your hit dice (5) +1 (for the meds you got on Basajuan) for each night of good rest (4).

Cool, it looks like each got at least two votes (since I basically voted for each) I'm most familiar with Ubiquity's rules and could probably put that together the quickest, but I'll pick either One Ring or Conan to read up on the rules first since they tied for the most votes. Eventually, if there's continued interest we may try them all out. Maybe do one a month or something.

Rolls

Even = TOR, Odd = Conan - (1d2)

(2) = 2

So it looks like first up will be The One Ring.. We'll try that one first ( hopefully late Sept if time permits) and then later we can mix in some of the others along with the board game get togethers, at least until someone is ready to start a long term campaign

No worries. Take care.

OK, sorry I have a dumb question:

The latest post asks for an Int/Know check. If I'm going to use the Gamersplane rolls, do you (the GM) add the INT to our generated roll, or do we need to do that when we roll it? I haven't been adding it, but I've taken few enough rolls on the system not to have considered it before. In the roll I just posted to the Gameplay thread, it let me edit the 'Roll' field to add a +2 (for INT) on the fly, for a total formula of 2d6+1+2, but is that the way we should be doing it? (Skills can be paired with different Attributes, so it wouldn't always be the same, right?)
Oct 13, 2022 2:02 pm
Assuming you did not bake any attribute modifiers into the skill section of your character sheet (and you probably shouldn't because the used attribute can change), you should be adding it to the roll. I'm not adding or subtracting anything on my end for player rolls.
Oct 13, 2022 6:59 pm
Ok sounds good. I'll watch that from now on.
