Character Creation

Aug 19, 2022 6:42 am
This is the character creation thread, where character creation will be discussed. (Shocker, I know.)

Here's a link to some 1st level *pregens* for you to have a look at, tinker or outright play with. I'd prefer you to choose/make something simple.

Don't worry too much about backstories and whatnot - the premise of the adventure is that you're adventures for hire, currently staying at the Tea Kettle. Whether you have met or even adventured with each other before is purely for the sake of roleplaying and won't affect the story.

You can either choose to use a dnd5e template for your character or you can use a Custom sheet - making a character through the pregens uses a Custom sheet. If you need any clarifications on sheets, let me know.

Antiproduct is also allowing the new playtest material for DnD 6e (or 5.5e or DnD One or whatever).

Playtest material

The main differences are in the races and backgrounds. But you get a free feat and some more equipment - so that's nice!

Thanks for bringing it up again Adam, I totally forgot to. Funny thing is that many DMs already allowed a starting feat, so it's now getting incorporated.

Yes - but they've found a way to stop people from taking those boring mechanical feats like Great Weapon Master. It's about the feats with flavour - like being a great musician or a healer.

Characters also get to choose more flavourful equipment too. I really like the proposed changes.

Seems to be closest to 5.5. I'll look through before I build today. It sounds like they're essentially making background matter more than Ancestry, which honestly, correct direction imho

And to respond from the OOC thread. I have sorta a picture of a reborn barbarian. Saved from death to protect a town from some major threat. I picture that maybe the town in the physical sense still wasn't saved (taken over or decimated depending on the threat), but that there are far more people still alive.

Now they're... in between, but beholden to the diety that allowed them to persevere. Target would be Zealot at 3, based on the Zealot's (late game) Rage beyond death ability (I'm assuming we won't get there, but ya know. Inspiration)

Ok I am out if work and trying to figure this out here.
Can I link my DND Beyond character sheet here or how dies this work here?

Hey there. Adam has graciously written an extension that makes this easy. You can share your link here, via a note/pm or on discord via pm and either he or me can do the conversion.

Inspiration is good. This will be a short mission really, so no need to ponder too much on background details (unless you want to of course, no one stops you from taking your character onto further adventures).

We use the character sheet functionality of GP rather than linking to DnDB.

There is an extension for importing DnDB sheets into GP, but I tend to manually copy the stats then use these scripts for the abilities and spells.

But for a one-shot? Meh. Probably best to just use a class template and not worry about it too much.

Looking like the new playtest stuff doesn't have the features my character is based on. What all is open from current?
Aug 19, 2022 9:06 pm
The new stuff is optional. You can stick with the official 5e if you prefer.

Double checked the new feats system and it seems like me taking one of those feats would be overtuned. Am I good to take a feat at 1, or should I stick to (current) rules as written.

Go ahead. (UA p.16-18)

@GigaOWP you need any help setting up your character?

Sorry about this delay just dealing with stuff IRL right now. It's looking like I need to step away from this right now. I will be back when I get things straightened out and I don't want told hold up a pbp.

Thanks for everything

Don't mention it Giga. Thanks for letting us know.

@Antiproduct,@Adam Hey, so I was going to use Reborn for this, but it seems a little inaccurate. What are your thoughts on using an Orc or Half-Orc base, with something similar to the Hollow One for their Ancestry stuff.

EDIT: Submitted it as this. I don't have the background written out, mostly just due to wanting to hash out place names and the threat it faced.

Introducing Jim (or James, or Jimmy, or Jimmi, or Giacomo, or Jamie, or Jammy, or Jam, or Jay, or Jimbo, depending on his mood).

It's all about the music for Jim. He's a smart guy and knows about all sorts of things that he might use in his lyrics.

He's curious about the world, and gets involved in search of tales that he might set to a tune.

"If music be the food of love, then I'm, like, totally a chef, dude"

Introducing Fray Ed MontBlanc, priest of Llira... or just Ed for his friends.
Ed enjoys joy, music, beauty (specially inner beauty, as in spiritual goodness) and freedom, and is always ready for a good party!
Ed doesn't like conflict at all, and hates fighting (eventhough he did learn how to fight to defend the good and weak who can't defend themselves).
Ed is quite tall and big and fat, and smiling all the time, seeing the best in everyone. But he can't stand injustice nor evil when it clearly infiltrates human civilitation.

I hope the barbarian shows up. I think James and Fray are going to be as effective warriors as Bill and Ted.

Hahaha, yes! Ed does NOT fight much... He is more into healing you know.

Wh-what, I'm here I'm awake! (I'm writing an intro post and figuring out a portrait)

Finally decided on Torm for a diety, as the epitome of Mor's deal.
