Dark Side of Loridian

Aug 21, 2022 7:11 pm
The Barrington Tor is—or rather was—a corporate transport ship used by Nebula Vista Corporation to ferry high value cargo and representatives across the frontier. When the ship went missing two weeks ago, it made interstellar news.

Last week a satellite located its remains on the dark side of Loridian (in the Kassel System), and an expensive search was undertaken by local rescuers who failed to find survivors (they had to use remote recon drones equipped with lifeform scanners, since radiation was too high in the area for a foot-based search). Today Nebula Vista Corp ordered the search ended and sadly sent news to the families of the eight beings lost in that crash, citing failure in the nav computer as the likely root cause of the accident, killing all aboard. Reparation to the families is underway.

The radiation has died down in the area of the crash to allow for safe search. Some of you were approached because you had experience with crashed spaceship or with finding missing crew members (Sam and Mesec), others because you are local (Q's Yasirian), and the others, well, for some other areas of expertise that you posses...

You have been on Loridian for some time now, having been hired by Nebula Vista Corporation. Two weeks ago, you heard that a corporate transport ship, the Barrington Tor was lost. Las week, pieces of it were identified via satellite in a rocky region on the dark side of this side-locked world. An exhaustive search of the site revealed no survivors and was concluded today.

As members of the Nebula Vista troubleshooting division (a nice way of saying sub-contractors), you've been given your mission orders. Your objective: locate and retrieve the Barrington tor's flight recorder and return it to the labs at NVC headquarters. Technicians hope to analyze it and learn what happened to the ship and crew.

Since you've been together for a little while, feel free to introduce your characters. You are currently in the office of your employer, a female Novim of the name of Sepra Vemm as she is currently discussion the details of your mission.

"Of course, we will be lending you a hover car to drive to the generic area of the crash. The drive should take approximately 11 hours. Eventually, the terrain should become too rough for the hover car, so you will have to proceed on foot. You do possess plenty of survival gear, right?"

Also, since you've been here for a while, you can all roll a single d10 for any rumors you might have heard about the place...
Aug 21, 2022 10:13 pm
Corbin Steegs sits in the corner taking notes. As a Starship technician for most of his life, his inclusion on this makes sense. Crashed ships are rarely organized the same way as pre-crashed ships. He should be able to assist in identifying the sections of the ship and the most likely direction to the Flight Recorder. His civilian garb looks average but clean, as does he. Corbin's excited since he really hasn't had a chance to dig into any cool projects with Nebula Vista.
Aug 22, 2022 3:58 am
Kelvin leans back, his goggles tuned dark to block the bright lights. He's got his feet out, thinking that's charming.

A Yazirian, he has glider wings from arm to leg, and animalistic features, at least to a humans eyes. You know him of having a cruel streak, but when push comes to shove, he'll be the one you want to rely on helping you in a tough spot.

"Survival gear, huh? Just how much radiation are we talking about there, darlin'?" He's got a medkit, the know how to use it, and some additional tools, but he's mainly a warrior. People generally ask him to look mean and shoot back if they're fired upon.

His stomach gurgles with hunger.
Aug 22, 2022 2:47 pm
"Well within acceptable parameters, but it wasn't the radiations I had in mind. As you all know, Loridian is side-locked. It's rotation matches it's orbit around the Kessel sun. Meaning one side is always lit and hot, then there is the median strip of a few hundred kilometers wide and with a temperate climate but in constant twilight. This is where we are located now. Then there is the dark side, in perpetual darkness and continually frozen, where temperature average -20 degrees Celcius (about -4 F). You'll ben needing enviro suits, and given the length of your missions, possibly quite a few enviro-tents. You'll also need to feed and hydrate yourself as well take care of any wound or illness you might contract on this long trek. The dark side of Loridian is also home to much of the planet's predatory fauna, so you'll also need to be armed. Finally, the area where the drones spotted the remains is a large series of mountainous canyons and natural shelves, so you'll need equipment which will help you navigate this sort of accidental terrain and plan your route accordingly. Of course, with you being a local Mr. Kelvin, I don't think I told you anything you did not already knew. Oh, speaking of the terrain...

Sepra Vemm then punches a few keys on her keyboard and a map of the crash site appears on a screen behind her.

OOC:
You can ignore the star on the map, this is merely an indication of where the party will have to leave the lent hover car and start exploring on foot...
"As you can see, we have marked several areas of interest on your map. Those are areas where the drones picked up metallic gleams and/or readings. It is our belief that the Barrington Tor must have broken up into several pieces in it's entry into the Loridian atmosphere. You will have to find the part of the wreck which contains the bridge and retrieve the flight recorder there. As for any other part of the wreck you might find, I suppose they might still be worth investigating, if only to find clues as to where the part of the wreck containing the flight recorder is... This map will of course be uploaded to any of your portacomps or wristcoms. Do you have any other questions?
OOC:
Also, please all roll a single d10 for a rumor on Loridian.

Mesec has been sitting this whole time in a way that he almost took as much space as K'Tesk; arms resting each at the back of a chair - one holding a metallic flask that he took a swig from now and then, legs fully stretched out and crossed.

"Easy task. Heard that before. What are you providing us with? Now, I know that you'll say we won't probably need serious firepower and all; I just want to be prepared for anything."

Sepra continues, answering K'tesk first.

"Not much, I'm fraid. What the drones could pick up was severely limited due to radiations, strong winds, intense cold, hostile avian fauna... The reason are many, really. I guess the only good news I can truly give you is that you'll be well renumerated for your work."

She then turns to Mesec.

"The choice is yours, really. Since this mission is more than likely going to take several days, we could advance you one or two day's pay so you can purchase your own survival gear, to your own specification. Or the Nebula Vista Corporation could lend you anything you think you might require, within reason. We'll be expecting this equipment returned in good condition, of course..."

"What about we go through what you can get us and throw in a day's payment in advance for good measure - just in case we agree to disagree on something, eh?" said Mesec casually, lifting his flask in a half-toast, partially offering Sepra a swig for sealing the deal.
Aug 28, 2022 5:07 pm
Sepra stares blankly at Mesec for a moment, obviously finding his lack of professionalism quite unappealing...

"If this arrangement is to your colleagues' satisfaction, then yes, I can arrange to have basic survival supplies shipped to you, and then you can use your pay advance to further complement those to your own satisfaction."

Shen then turns to the rest of you, awaiting your answers.
Aug 28, 2022 7:38 pm
Always working the angles, Corbin approves of Mesec's tactics. "That seems to be an agreeable arangement."
Aug 29, 2022 4:55 am
"It would seem *tic* prudent."
Aug 29, 2022 3:42 pm
"A good plan. Let's do it!" Kelvin thinks about all the rations he can buy in advance with the advance. He imagines some kind of daily feast, and nearly salivates.
Aug 29, 2022 8:55 pm
With pretty much everyone agreeing to this arrangement (or at teh very least, the majority), Sepra continues.

"Very well, I will arrange for a day's pay advance to be transferred to your credsticks, and then put in a request to the quartermaster for basic survival supplies. It should not take too long, perhaps a few hours to get everything together."
Aug 30, 2022 6:31 pm
Mesec slaps his thigh with his free hand as he jolts up
"Alrighty then, just point us to your Cash & Carry joint. Anything else you might want to disclose before we find out by ourselves in an unpleasant way?" he asks with a smirk.
Aug 30, 2022 10:32 pm
"As a matter of fact, yes there is Mr. Devro. I don't know how things were with your ex-employer, Federation Navigation Systems Inc., but here at Nebula Vista Corporation, it is really bad form to be drinking on the job... I do hope this won't be any source of problems in the future, especially considering the delicate nature of your job."

Dammit... You wonder if she had any contacts with the FNS, and if so, what bullshit did they ended up telling her...
Sep 1, 2022 4:38 pm
"Oh it won't. I'm not on the job right now; besides, you're welcome to tag along and make sure I behave properly. You don't quite leave your desk much though, don't you?"

Mesec replied instantly with a smirk all across his face, as he wondered about what reputation he had accompanying him.
Sep 3, 2022 5:29 pm
You wait for what seems like several dozen minutes before Sepra gets a message on her computer.

"Good news, it would seem that my request for an advance on your pay has been approved. I'm transferring the advance to your credstick now. Feel free to verify to make sure."

You hear a bleep from your credsticks signalling a transfer of funds. Then, Sepra turns to Mesec.

"Well, it would seem that you are on the job now Mr. Devro..." She says this glaring at your alcohol flask...

"The quartermaster is also putting together your survival supplies. It should be complete in about an hour."
Sep 3, 2022 6:06 pm
Mesec put away the flask with a grin. His relaxed demeanor gave way to a determined look in his eyes.
"Ka-ching! Now we're talking. Apparently we have an hour; will you point us to the place where we can buy our own stuff? Better not to waste time - since we're on the job now and all."
Sep 4, 2022 2:44 pm
"There are several stores all within a 30 minutes walk or less from the Nebula Vista Corporation headquarters. You should be able to find whatever you need there, though you might have to visit more than one seller to do so. I can upload directions to your wristcoms, portacomps, or digital assistants should you desire. However, I am a bit confused. I thought the idea of the NVC supplying you with basic survival gear plus having an advance on your pay was so that you could complete your gear to your satisfaction. Should you not wait to see what we provide you with before heading out to the various stores?"
Sep 7, 2022 5:51 pm
You wait for about an hour or so, doing small talk, when you get the message that your basic survival gear has been gathered and is awaiting for you in your lent hovercar.

You make your way to the quartermaster's office and check out what has been provided for you. You make inventory and can count the following:
- A number of envirosuits equal to the number of players.
- A number of standard equipment packs (see p.21) equal to the number of players.
- 2 semiauto pistols, 2 auto pistols, and 1 autorifle, each loaded and with 2 spare mags (bound to change once Sam shows up).
- 2 vibroknives, and 1 vibroaxe each with an EU pack (bound to change once Sam shows up).
- 3 fragmentation grenades.
- 2 explorer's kits and 1 medkit.
- 2 grapple ziplines.
- 1 infrared goggle and 1 magnigoggle (bound to change once Sam shows up).
- An additional waterpack equal to the number of players, and 1 water purification pack.
- 1 eco scanner.

Each of these items (including the hovercar) bear the colors of the Nebula Vista Corp (blue and gold) as well as its logo.

"Shinny, nice. Could do without the lousy color scheme though." said Mesec in a mocking tone.

"I'll head out to do some shopping of my own now; meet you at the docks to split up the Corp goodies? You're welcome to tag along, naturally." he said to his crewmates.

Okay, so looks like you're all going shopping. You have several hours left to do your shopping before you need to go sleep and prepare for tomorrow. You can simply give me a quick overview of what you purchase.

Some possible suggestions (to answer @Esidrix, see pp.47-48, 50, and 53-91):
- More ammo for your own weapons or those provided by the NVC.
- Extra EUs for the scanner and vibro weapons provided (or any other you might purchase).
- New weapons (most pistols, a few rifles, all archaic and melee weapons, and most grenades & explosive are still affordable depending on who buys them or if you pool resources...).
- Better means of communication than your basic wristcoms should you plan on splitting up to cover more ground.
- More medkits if you're expecting a lot of trouble on your trek.
- Pretty much any type of exploration gear, most of it will be affordable...
Sep 25, 2022 7:17 pm

Mesec first order of business is to go and repair his ballistic suit.
Kalajel says:
I don't think I've seen rules for hirelings anywhere... so let's say 10© per BP (DUR) restored?
He makes a brief stop to the survival gear store to grab an oxy pack and then he rushes to the gun store, acting like a kid in a candy shop.

"Alrighty now, gimme a bunch of these, a couple those... You know what? Lemme send you my list." he taps on his wristcom and *beep* a message lights up on the vendor's screen, whose eyebrows keep rising as he goes through the list.

"Be a good fellow and get those delivered to Bay No.4 by tomorrow will you? You da man!"
He blurted and exited the store all too happy and significantly poorer.

Oct 4, 2022 1:09 pm
Once you're done shopping, you make your way back to the Nebula Vista Corp, split the lent equipment between you, and then head toward the crash site. Since the ride is 11 hours, you take turns driving while the rest of the group sleeps in the car. Eventually, you reach a point where the hover can can't progress any further (the star on the map). You get off, take your gear, consult your map, and formulate an itinerary to examine any of the areas of interest picked up by the search drones (the ruin-looking symbols).

https://i.imgur.com/6q3ly8V.jpg

Note that you can travel for up to 10 hours of Loridian's 22 hours "day". The entire region is cold and dark, though the enviro suits will protect you for the cold.

It occurs to me that I should have probably told you that each hexes represents vast areas of land which will take 1 or more hours to cross depending on the terrain type. Changing height/climbing ridges (the dark lines with has marks), will also add to travel time. So it would be important to know what path you're planning on taking as the journey to the north-western wreckage could take as little as 11 hours or as long as 19 hours depending on what hexes you cross...

OOC:
And that's the 11 hours route... Well, maybe more like 9 and a half hours now that I think about it... Anyways...
Everyone agrees that this seems to be the most logical route, so you make your journey through a vast wasteland area. In the distance, you spot what seems to be gigantic fungal forests. You think that maybe you can explore those later, if you have the time... You approach the first cliff you'll need to scale on your journey when...

You hear some strange stuttering howl in the distance. It is soon answered by more, more distant howls. This continues for a moment, with the howls getting progressively closer. Eventually you spot them, coming from behind some large rocks, 8 quadruped creatures running towards you, their face a mess of tentacles, a line of luminescent spots runs along their spines, and their tail, a spread of colorful feathers. They stop some distance away from you, carefully encircling you to make sure there's no escape, prowling closer, growling occasionally. With your backs practically to a sheer cliff, looks like you're going to have to fight that one out!

Alright, here is the battlemap, you can place your counters on it (I'm assuming the little cubby is probably going to be a popular defensive position). Once this is done, I'll start the fight proper.

Do not forget to roll your next round's initiative after you posted your action(s) to avoid slowing posting down too much. Also do not forget that in this game you can take multiple actions if you want (as many as you want if you feel particularly daring), but do not forget that your resistance checks (mainly dodge) will also suffer rom your multiple actions penalty. And speaking of multiple actions, do not forget to track your penalty...

If you are on a mobile and have trouble placing/moving your counter or have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.

Okay, let's start with the actions in order. First Corbin shoots at one of the "hounds". Since they don't exactly know what firearms are, it won't dodge and will take the full 11 points of damage with a yelp of pain.

Then K'Tesk will shoot disadvantaged, but since 43 is the worst result she could get, she still hit. I assume you're focussing fire so the same target as Corbin who will dodge this time having felt the sting of your weapons... It fails and is hit for another 16 points of damage, killing it...

It is then those creatures' turn. They will approach, the group. Sadly Mesec seems to be up front before moving so four will attack him. One will reach Kelvin, and two will reach K'Tesk. So one attack succeeds on Kelvin. 3 attacks succeed on Mesec (taht 100 is actually a 00, a critical hit!), and 1 hit succeeds on K'Tesk. You can perform your dodges now, keeping in mind your Muktiple Action Penalties (speaking of which, all of those hounds are at -20 M-A penalty now).

Mesec will have succeeded on his first dodge, avoiding the critical damage of the first scavlooper, however, he is hit by the remaining 2 for 9 and 8 points of damage (17 total). As the tentacles hits him, Mesec can feel something stings him, and his body becomes somewhat numb ( 2 successful attacks, so your MOV is temporarily reduced by 2).

However, payback is going to be a bitch as Mesec's first fire still hits (a result of 03 is below the 5% threshold for automatic success). However, that second burst will be a miss.

Mesec falls back and shoots a load of bullets one one of the creatures. It will try to dodge seeing what happened to one of their numbers last time someone made "noise" at them (It will do so at -20 MA penalty, plus another -20 "hard" penalty for dodging firearms if you're farther away from an obstacle than the shooter)... That was a critical fail on the dodge, so I'd give Mesec some bonus damage or something, but the matter is moot as he already did more than enough to kill the thing... You see Mesec taking aim and firing. The creature obviously misjudge the strange "noisy stick" and jumps right into the volley of bullets instead of away from it, getting absolutely shredded by the hail of bullets. It falls down quite dead and with a few more orifices it had while alive...
OOC:
Wait, did you guys already took your actions? Oh yeah, I see, you sort of jumped the gun and took your actions before I could set up the first round of combat... Okay, gimme a minute, I'll check your posts and resolve them... Okay, so what I can see is Corbin shot, K'Tesk shot then had to dodge... Okay.
Oh, nevermind, I re-read my first post. Corbin's and K'Tesk's concentrated fire is what brought down the first creature, okay.
Okay, well, K'Tesk manages to dodge that attack, even adding a -20 MA penalty in case it was forgotten about, so Kelvin is up!

OOC:
Hmm, Q, you have to roll your Battle Rage first, which takes an action, and since it is unskilled, it is rolled at -20 and disadvantaged. If you succeed, you can then roll your monosword attack at advantage and at -20 Multi-Action penalty.
The creature will attempt to dodge at a -20 MA penalty. It succeeded in dodging. Will Kelvin attempt another attack before we move on to the next round?
OOC:
Also, please roll your initiative for the next round.

K'tesk will be up. I'll think of her action and edit this post later...
Nov 13, 2022 4:59 pm
K'tesk will retreat further into the nook in the cliff so that only one creature can attack her at a time and open fir on one of them with her blast pistol. She'll start with one shot, if she can't down it, she'll try a second shot then stop to give herself reasonable chance to dodge with not too much MA penalties...

K'tesk will be at -40 to dodge.

Both shots missed. Borbin and Kelvin are up next, any order.

Kelvin continues to try and slay the alien in front of him with his monosword.
OOC:
If it doesn't go down, he'll attack again, otherwise he'll roll to activate Battle Rage. Ill add both of those rolls.

The creature in front of Kelvin will attempt to dodge the new attack... and fails, taking 5(B) damage

Speaking of creatures, it's their turn. The wounded one in front of Kelvin will call for back up before trying to attack him, which means one will break off from Mesec to attack Corbin instead. So we'll have 1 attack on Kelvin, 1 attack on Corbin, attacks on Mesec, and 1 attack on K'tesk (the 2nd creature can't reach her where she is right now...). Seems like all attacks hit this round, except on Kelvin (thank you MA penalties!). So you guys need to make some dodge... speaking of which last round I forgot the -20 penalty for a "hard" action of dodging while being outnumbered in melee. I won't retroactively apply it, but Mesec will have this -20 penalty applied for his dodges this round.

Once Mesec will have dodged, it will be his turn!
