you get to choose the era, faction, squad build. As this is also a learning experience for me, it will be a series of one-shots rather than one expansive narrative

I see you're using Star Wars Miniatures rules. Would love to hear how you successfully manage a miniatures games over play-by-post, since it'll be a pretty challenging mode.

Nah, home-brewing using the rules for a jumping off point if i need ideas on how to bring an element into play.

So not so much focus on things like if you have line of sight, or your movement cost. but using the abilities (like the nades or jet packs, or how some commander effects more than others is more like a buff than squad build. Ive been mulling over which of these is easier to innovate. I am aware of the RPG rules as well, and have been looking into the species builds and classes.

regardless, the set pieces to provide visual inserts alongside the story will be the miniatures, or lego. Miniatures for the strategic military command route, lego if you want to go more with an adventure/questing route.

hypothetical, if you were to play, which era/faction would you pick?

yeah im sure you werent trying to act like a discouraging gatekeeper to the site. gosh i dont have enough exp in this craft, i must not belong here. better clear the space for the REAAAL gms.

I don't think he was trying to discourage you, @LSWMbard5. Gamers Plane or any forum really is a tough place to play miniatures combat is all, as there aren't really and tools set up for that. I suppose you could take pictures of a physical layout and post those, then moving your master set based on your players moves.

What did you have in mind for playing?

Oh dear, I didn't mean that at all. I'm a fan of Star Wars Miniatures, and have played a ton of it on tabletop. The question was genuine, enough for me to have clicked through your game setup page to try to understand how you were intending to play the game. Not sure why you considered the question as gatekeeping.

So, in the same genuine vein, were you thinking that players will build a squad based on a point total? Will that just be one player vs the GM, or multiple players? Or did you mean each player will play 'one' of the miniatures using its stat block?

There is the On The Fly Battle maps. That could work, but it would not be miniatures

Okay, i apologize for the outburst, my search has taken me on on some snooty discords, so my cynicism it high, and in a modern world of abundant passive aggressiveness its impossible to tell anymore. but you clarified, so i appreciate that and apologize.

Republic/Imperial faction play will be a more rigid structure, preset squads. Specialist group units are added to your roster of troops to command as a progression system. Your main is the platoon commander, team/party are the Sgts, and the squads are more the build to your sgts capabilities, instead of each induvidual troop having an action. you roll to see if the squad as a whole is successful. This mode ignores the squad point/cost aspect.

Rebels is meant to be more intimate with the party build. you play as the squad leader, assign individually who you want in the party. the point system helps me separate which units become available later, and which are good for starters, so again not strictly working off it, but letting it guide me on building/managing the difficulty/story for the player.

separatists can kinda go either way.

as for the stat blocks they will be applied. but i may make adjustments in order to balance. ie: the boss battle enemy cost far more than your squad, i may then nerf its original defense or attack to make it more fair.

and yes play is intended to include visual reference to the battle and layout of the field

ill check out the Fly Battle, thank you.

Hey no offense taken, sorry to hear you've been at the receiving end of chatgroup snark. I'm happy to declare the people here in my experience have been largely pleasant and helpful, so hopefully you'll find a community to play with here.

And it's an intriguing idea for sure to reengineer SWM to achieve a more rpg feel rather than on the map tactical combat!
