Character Concepts

So does any one have any idea what kind of character they would want to be running?
Sep 15, 2022 11:17 pm
Maybe a rogue of some sort? Possible multiclass into Hexblade down the road?

Hmm. Lots of options.. :)... Have to think about his. But stats first.. :)

Stats: 18, 13, 13, 12, 11, 10 Rather interesting.

Edit: Opsie. You have another area for stats.

Thinking more on it. Hmmm. Half-Orc, Twilight Domain, Urban Bounty Hunter, Cleric of Selune. Applied the starter, but the GM already knew that.

Scharoun the Bounty Hunter

Thieve's guild sounds good. I... may actually start with my first level in Warlock, then drop into Rogue. Honestly, I like the saves better. Lol
Sep 16, 2022 12:40 am
Are you familar with the major guilds in waterdeep or do you want me to send you a summary of them?
Sep 16, 2022 12:41 am
Wow lots of potential there! As far as rogues go, I though it would be cool to create a party of rogue "MINDED" individuals that are fiercely loyal to one another. Maybe they are family, or shared some deep history, whaterver it is, if there were ever honor among thieves it would be with this group. A common drive and uncommon loyalty.

If anyone has had the pleasure of reading the "Gentleman Bastards" you will see what I envision.
Sep 16, 2022 12:43 am
Funny I was thinking more 'Mistborn" but ofcourse Im a big Sanderson fan

Admittedly I'm a bit rusty on Waterdeep and its lore (so many homebrew campaigns over the years! Lol) but if memory serves, the Shadow Thieves is both pretty successful, and more or less your generic thieve's guild. That should work well enough...

Although the Sashes (the vigilante group, iirc) has a certain appeal... hmmm...
Sep 16, 2022 12:54 am
I probably will go for an elven fighter (eldritch knight).
Sep 16, 2022 1:05 am
Actually Im going with the Major ones from Dragon Heist and those are the Xanathar Guild and the Zhentarim. But one question to everyone, Is anyone here so far familiar or own Acquisitions Incorporated?
Sep 16, 2022 1:06 am
Mistborn! Great Series! Admittedly I haven "read" a good book lately but listened to quite a few.

Gods m8! if your into audio books, the narration in Gentlemans Bastards is probably he BEST Ive come across! Give it go. Highly reccomended.

Ehh... the Zhentarim are slavers and murderers.

Xanathar's guild requires murdering or selling into slavery a close friend or family member.

So maybe I'll pass on thieve's guilds then.

As for Aquisitions Incorporated, I skimmed it at my local a while back, but that's pretty much the extent of my experience with it.
Sep 16, 2022 1:33 am
Don't have to be affiliated with an established guild. Could just be a group of highly skilled independants... the A-Team!

Scharoun is coming along fast.

Anything I should know about being an urban bounty hunter or being a Cleric of Selûne?

For urban bounty hunter, there will be job boards you can find work from, there are also the local Adventuring guilds.

Considerin a rogue with Sage background - Bookworm - Prefers the long game, scams, confidence games and such. Pretty weak in "traditional" rogue skills. Gonna need backup!
Sep 16, 2022 5:59 am
I am planning a warlock of either Archfey or Great Old One. Although I don't rule out Hexblade either as a more warrior option.

She is the daughter of a hag, placed as a changeling baby with a normal family in Waterdeep.
Normally she should have eventually turned into a full, proper hag. But she hasn't for some reason. Her parents had suspicion and found a cleric to shield the child with magic.
Now that she is an adult, she is connected with evil magic and rituals and trying to find a way between her own moral believes and her origin.

I expect to have a proper char sheet up over the weekend.

Sep 16, 2022 7:49 am
I'm not familiar with Acquisitions Inc.

I still like the idea of a guild thief.

Now I got to think of a build that'll work with my ahhh.... interesting stat array.
Sep 16, 2022 9:40 am
I've played in an Acquisitions Inc. one-shot. Not terribly familiar, but I'm not entirely clueless. I also played in a Waterdeep: Dragon Heist game that didn't get far. I generally don't pay too much attention to Forgotten Realms lore.

For a character I'm thinking of a roguish bard. A free agent but isn't averse to hiring himself out to guilds as long as there are no strings attached.

I'm hoping to do a little solo adventuring in addition to adventuring with whatever group (or groups) might form here.
Sep 16, 2022 12:47 pm
With the way things are shaping up, I'm going to have to brush up on Skullport. Sounds like this will be a better spot in the city to start most of you. Love the ideas though, its getting me to have many ideas already.
Sep 16, 2022 1:41 pm
I don't have Dragon heist, I do have access to Acquisitions Incorporated, not red it yet. Never know how much of reading would be metagaming, so I prefer to only read what a DM allow/suggests to read. I would start reading it if there is no spoilers.

I believe wizard who has more ambitions that the skills would a perfect match to my rolled ability scores. Currently considering either a human, Tortle or gnome. Will see how exotic races other players will pick.

Go ahead and read it. I'm using it more for flavor and someone having knowledge of AI and the people in it would be good, plus a wizard with more ambitions than skill is something that fits in with AI perfectly.

Are you sure you don't want to use the Shadow Thieves, then?

Both Zhentorim and Xanathars, at least canonically, do a lot of slavery and murder... which is decidedly evil, and which means rogues who just want to steal stuff and maybe help out some poor along the way don't have a guild.

The other options being the two guilds you mentioned are toned down considerably, or the PCs start our own club. With jackets, and hookers. (Maybe no jackets.)

Actually with a lot of you looking to play rouges and other shadowy types (looking at you Stabby) I have an idea that will work perfectly. I just need to do some rereading and flesh it out some and talk to those that want to play more 'criminal' types. Plus you forgot that the club also has to have blackjack. (really thinking of adding a warforged NPC now)
Sep 16, 2022 2:18 pm
Our bouncer! Biggest (height/weight) Warforged fighter we can make, boost STR and CON, Defense fighting style for an extra +1 AC, a shield... and a sap to only do non-lethal damage. 😁

Have the word "Behave" engraved on the shield, maybe a minor magical effect so it's readable in any language, just so he can say, "Don't make me tap the sign."

Arcane Master - (1d8)

(6) = 6

The more I think about it it feels like the eldritch knight might feels hollow if we make more scheming/social encounter than actual fight.

I have some ideas for rogues, wizards but I don't to duplicate char concepts too much?

Any ideas?

Character wise I believe two wizards could be as different as a warlock is different from cleric.
Anyhow here are some details on my wizard PC if you want to make your unique to help you make a different one, should you want a to make wizard
[ +- ] Based on what I rolled
Tortle by race and by nature.
Quote:
Carrying their shelter on their backs gives tortles a special feeling of security wherever they go, for even if they visit a far, unknown country, they have a place to lay their heads.
Skullport is just a step in his live, a stop to learn new skills before and save some money before he continue exploring the world. He met his master Loa Hatt in Skullport and is still educating under his supervision (hope that we will eventually level up so I can pick School of Illusion as the moment when my PC abandon his master). He is introvert trying to prove himself through action rather than talking, optimist - always look on the bright side of life, but calculating and planning before making any decision.

Rounding out my Roguish Character concept

Oliver is a bit awkward, and definitely not a face man. He’s not a very good liar, or persuasive or even intimidating. If anyone would describe him, they would just say "That mousy guy in accounting."

What Oliver does excel at is supporting his siblings. He has an incredible memory, rarely forgetting anything and an excellent eye for detail. While the other kids were out "playing" Oliver’s was tasked to learn as much as he could about all manner of subjects. The others took to the books like a punishment, but for Oliver nothing could be better!

So, if anyone is interested in coming up with group of close-knit Rogues or like-minded personalities let me know. You don't have to be a "Rogue" just think like one!

ok well i haven't ironed all the details but thinking they are good-aligned beings whose followers were persecuted in ages past. another user made this poem for them. My warlock Auras would be on her journey to see the world and has come to see if this world has changed for the better for her people. she is the daughter of her clan's leader who is her mother. thoughts? im open to suggestions or changes.

By four they come. By four they are known.
The eldest and greatest is Tankhu Wankhu, The Perpura King.
Second is Daepsu the Tall, unmovable and self-absorbed.
Third is the Queen of the Rictus Laugh, Låh-Låh the twisted.
Last is the witch-queen of forbidden knowledge, P'o, lady of twisted dreams.
Guided by the false sun, by four they watch from shadow.
Let none who hear their cursed voice escape the pyre.

and their looks i found online.

Yeah, I think I've settled on my build.

Human (Custom Lineage) with the Guild Artisan background to be a locksmith (Splendid Order of Armorsmiths, Locksmiths, and Finesmiths -- it's listed as a registered guild in Waterdeep). First level in Hexblade. Next two levels will be in Rogue. From there, probably alternate back and forth some, looking to go Inquisitive for my Rogue subclass.

There will be a bit of redundancy taking Rogue when I'm already be proficient with Thieve's Tools, but whatever. No big deal.

@MaJunior PHB Pg 125. You won't have any redundacy! "If a character would gain the same profiency from two differnt sources, he or she can choose a differnt profiency of the same kind (skill or tool) instead."

Just pick a different tool :)

Not really. By the book, that applies if your background provides hou with a proficiency you get elsewhere (an example would be taking Criminal and Rogue at level 1). It doesn't technically apply to other sources.

Now, the DM may allow it anyway, but what you said isn't really supported by the book.

Submitted my character Jade.

Instead of Archfey or Great Old One, I decided to go Fathomless. As Waterdeep is a harbor city anyway.

Brief backstory:
She is the child of a Sea Hag (also her patron), who secretly lives in the harbor of the city.
The reason she hasn't changed herself is because her adoptive changeling lesser-noble parents have let priests of Selûne ward her.

Von Selema

Most known as a gothic like singer that specialized with her dark wooden fiddle. Always found in dark clothing that she fills out well. Known that she could spit out a word and with snap of her fingers put out a dark bolt of energy to kill off rats. She hasn't played much in the last two years but has a small following just the same. She only played in the lower lesser establishments of Waterdeep.

Most all know her as the "Dark Princess" and some even know her name "Von Selema". Because of her dark black angel wings and her violent violet eyes that sometimes look like sparkling evil purple marbles she is noticeable. Her pale white skin matches her long white hair also helps. She is otherwise tall (6'7") and dynamically gorgeous.

Warlock and an entertainer.

https://i.pinimg.com/736x/4d/44/2d/4d442dda56063378eb02f9134b6a3d7c.jpg

Side tale:

Annoy brute of a customer comes and swings his sword to split Von Selema's fiddle in two pieces saying, "How do you like those apples."

Von Selema politely casted charm person on him and escorted him to the top of one of the highest buildings around. There she got his money pouch from him and pushed him off the building saying, "My apples are fine."

She went to the mages and paid with the guy's money to have her fiddle mended.

Travel through the Sword Coast as a wanderer decided to make a stop to learn some illusion magic from Loa Hatt, a tiefling illusionist. He just realized that magical illusions isn't sufficient to make good money in entertainment business and looking forward to adventuring business.
He was actually inspired by a single sentence he hear in an inn by person who pretend to be a prominent wizard at Acquisitions Incorporated:
Quote:
No wizard will ever take offense to a polite round of applause from the rest of the party after a particularly well-crafted spell.
Sep 17, 2022 5:21 pm
Ooh, an Aasimar! I was considering Tiefling, but that might now be a bit too cliche. Hmm, back to the drawing board.
Sep 17, 2022 5:27 pm
Well. Yeah. Von Selema plays Human, but your right she is Aasimar. And to be more exact. A Fallen Aasimar and took just a bit of cursing for being such. Go for a Tiefling if you want. I don't see any cross turf. Just another outsider.

Those cute angel like wings are black and fairly much useless (Cosmetic). Might be good for swatting flies. They just make backpacks impossible and smiles. armor and clothing custom made and expensive.

People spit on my kind. Call us cursed for our fiendish blood.
Expect us to be murderers, cultists or whatever spawn of evil their minds can conjure.
Some of my kind work hard to prove them wrong.
I don't bother. To the pits with all of them.
If they won't give me a fair chance, I'll be everything they hate, and more.

OOC:
It can be so hard to find good art when you want someone simple and unremarkable, who looks like a commoner without looking destitute.
https://i.imgur.com/ziGlRjB.jpg

Ryel is a young man who started studying smithing at a young age, hoping to make a good enough living to live comfortably. Nothing extravegant or lavish, just clean clothes in good repair, a clean home in good repair, and good food.

Along the way, he realized many people -- no matter how hard they worked -- would never be able to lift themselves out of where they were in life. He saw people living in squalor, hungry, struggling to get by. He saw others who wanted for nothing -- many of whom never truly worked for what they had.

Ryel decided food on the tables of the poor was more important than coins in the coffers of the wealthy, and decided to help who he could, even if laws would not look kindly on his actions... because good people don't let others suffer if they can help it.

Ryel started trying to study magic, seeing it as supremely useful... both for his business, and for his greater goals. But... he just wasn't good at it. He learned a little, even enough to summon an... owl?... to his side, but he wasn't truly getting it. The books overwhelmed him, the words devolving into a jumbled mess in his mind. So, when the shadows late one night on his walk home offered him a quicker path, he siezed it.

Actually never had issues finding good female Tiefling art when I've needed some. There's plenty of T&A, sure, but lots of other stuff exists.

The problem with finding "average" character art is, everyone tends to exagerate... commoners are barefoot with tattered rags as clothes, to emphasize being poor. Rogues look like they're either Assassin's Creed characters or hollywood pirates. Guild artisans or merchants are fat, old, and dressed like royalty to emphasize their wealth. It's largely because everyone wants their character to stand out.

But when you want your character to just look like an average cityfolk? D&D doesn't do "average."

Von Selema lives a comfy lifestyle so being a "By Popular Demand" she gets paid well. And love songs are definitely not the type of songs she plays on her fiddle and sings. That is going to be Expensive! She is rather Gothic as well. Smiles. Doubt a good home spun girl is probably not in the establishments that Von Selema plays in either. Just say Von Selema circulates in the lowest parts of Waterdeep where the norm don't go.

Edit: Looks to see how plump Auras money pouch is....Assuming she hasn't been already pick pocketed....

For some reason Agnor always liked humans. While they had short lives they seemed to accomplish so much. Some had quiet life, some more dangerous ones.

His latest friend liked to take risks and so she and Aegnor ran petty scams and made themselves live a somewhat confortable life.

All that changed when one of their breakn in turned bad which cost his friends life. In her last breath she handed a mysterious book to Aegnor and whispered a single word... "Skullport".

Aegnor was surprise by this as he had never seen that book before. Not able to decypher anything from it he travelled to Skullport hoping to find a meaning to this.

But... what would we need to adjust?

It's a sandbox, so we may mot be one big team. Hell, we probably won't. It's not like filling party roles is important in this environment.
Ok. It's fine with me then

yeah.. hope they get along lol
Sep 20, 2022 11:52 pm
Von Selema isn't hard to get along as long as you can accept her Gothic'ism. And you are not like the rat she blasted recently. Peskie rat kept tormenting her. He He He. No more...

Smiles. Truth of the matter is she prayed upon her higher power and he gave her sleep spell. Die Rat. Die. Obviously there is a dear connection between her and her Achfey power...

She is hope'ing for more goodies. (Levels)... :) Obviously that takes adventuring (She is a member of the Adventurer's Guild too.) And you would think being a performer and all she would in some guild for that ... NOT...They don't get a cut of her pay!

And yes she wears spiked leather goodies all the time. (Packed 20gp into it too. She has the good stuff.) She has max gold and really no armor or weapons to buy... :)

Don't you want to take a stroll down beneath the lower parts of Waterdeep.... Sometimes she comes up for a vacation....

And you can call all me "Princess" ah.. "Dark Princess" actually.

We've all been there. I dread when my boss tells me it'll be an easy day.

It never is.

We don't know what's going on in Forgedchaos' life. Surely there's a perfectly good reason he's away. As I'm someone whose life often takes unexpected turns and has on several occasions seemed to drop off the face of the earth, I just hope he's okay.

Me too. Life can be a bear.
