Determine Characteristics
Roll 3D6 multiplied by 5 for the characteristics STR, CON, DEX, APP, and POW.
Roll 2D6+6 multiplied by 5 for SIZ, INT, and EDU.
(The multiply by 5 you need to manually as the dice roller doesn't support multiplication)
Also decide an age for your character as that will impact stats (older gives you a more educated character but weaker physically)
There is a dedicated 7e character sheet or if yo prefer custom sheets, you can grab from the repository.

Here goes nothing!
Rolls
STR - (3d6)
(465) = 15
CON - (3d6)
(241) = 7
DEX - (3d6)
(165) = 12
APP - (3d6)
(544) = 13
POW - (3d6)
(641) = 11
SIZ - (2d6+6)
(63) + 6 = 15
INT - (2d6+6)
(62) + 6 = 14
EDU - (2d6+6)
(36) + 6 = 15
Oct 13, 2022 1:07 am
So,
STR: 70
CON: 35
DEX: 60
APP: 70
POW: 55
SIZ:75
INT: 70
EDU: 75
AGE: 42
STR: 70
CON: 35
DEX: 60
APP: 70
POW: 55
SIZ:75
INT: 70
EDU: 75
AGE: 42

OK, for age. deduct 5 points from Str, Con or Dex. This can be from one stat or split over the three
Reduce your APP by 5
Make 2 Improvement check on EDU - that means make a d100 roll for each. If you fail (get over your stat) then gain 1d10 points to your EDU

OK, I'll take the whole 5 points from STR.

And just to be clear rolling over your STAT is a fail? So, my EDU stays the same.
Oct 14, 2022 12:03 am
Yes any time you try for an improvement, you need to roll high to get the benefit.

Have two that interest me... A Book Dealer that specializes in rare books on the occult and the supernatural. Or an Asylum Attendant that dabbles in the occult.
Oct 14, 2022 12:53 am
Also, regarding character sheets. I take it I need to post one on here somewhere? How do I go about that?
Oct 14, 2022 7:15 am
Book dealer might have more freedom to travel than asylum attendant but we can make either work.
Go to your characters and make a character from there you can pick a sheet. The easiest way is to pick call of Cthulhu 7e as your sheet. Alternatively you can pick custom sheet which you can customise with code. Templates can be found in a thread on the site if interested in this option.

Book Dealer
A book dealer may be the owner of a retail outlet or niche mail order service, or specialize in buying trips across the country and even overseas. Many will have wealthy or regular clients, who provide lists of sought-after and rare works.
Occupation Skill Points: EDU × 4
Credit Rating: 20–40.
Suggested Contacts: Bibliographers, book dealers, libraries and universities, clients.
Skills: Accounting, Appraise, Drive Auto, History, Library Use, Own Language, Other Language, one interpersonal skill (Charm, Fast Talk, Intimidate, or Persuade).
Note that credit rating must be bought with these points in addition to the other skills. You can choose how well off the character is

Once you have the characters sheet up, you can apply it to the game, so go to the game page and look for this:
Oct 15, 2022 12:41 am
So an EDU of 75 gives you 300 points to spend on occupational skills. That includes Credit Rating which can be between 20 and 40
In addition, you get Int x 2 (140) to spend on Personal Interest skills, which can be any you like, except Cthulhu Mythos.
Note that skills all have a default value so what you spend is on top of that.
I also didn't ask about your character's age. That can impact your physical abilities if over 40 but will payoff with possible higher EDU (and more skill points)

The list of skills for your occupation are what you can spend the first batch of points on, spread as you see fit.
The entire skill list is on a standard character sheet (screenshot below) but you have to enter them manually to add points (the defaults will appear by themselves) Personal Interest basically covers all skills, so you can think of this as skills you develop outside of work .
Here are the starting points for skills. Any points you spend are added to these and need to manually entered to your character sheet.

As you are in the 40's, you have a few penalties and bonuses:
Lose 5 from EITHER Str, Dex or Con. This can be all one stat, or split over any of the three
Gain 2 EDU improvement checks. Roll 1d100 for each, you want to fail, so get over your EDU stat. If so, you gain 1d10 (for each roll)

Great, so that's 1d10 extra EDU (which will increase your skill points)
Also, thanks to age, reduce your APP by 5

Gotcha. Lose 5 from Str, DEX, and/or CON. Lose 5 from APP. And plus 9 to EDU.

oh hang on...I just saw we did this earlier on page one. OK, ignore. Sorry, helping make 6 characters at the same time is not good for my sanity.
Oct 15, 2022 12:07 pm
Right, things left to do:
Skill points
Your max Sanity is 99, current sanity is equal to your POW
Magic Points are 1/5 of your POW
Roll 3d6 x5 for Luck
Now roll for some background elements to help you flesh the character out:
Ideology 1d10
Significant People 1d10
Why significant? 1d10
Meaningful location 1d10
Treasured possession 1d10
Trait 1d10

So, can the Personal Skill points be added to Occupational Skills or do they have to be strictly assigned to non-occupational skills?
Oct 15, 2022 12:51 pm
Luck Roll. So, 35 total.

Here's your background stuff: Pick one as your key element, the thing that centres you.
Ideology The occult (e.g. astrology, spiritualism, tarot).
Significant People Sibling (e.g. brother, half-brother, stepsister).
Why significant? You seek to prove yourself to them. How? (e.g. by getting a good job, by finding a good spouse, by getting an education).
Meaningful location The grave of a significant person. Who? (e.g. a parent, a child, a lover).
Treasured possession A sporting item (e.g. cricket bat, a signed baseball, a fishing rod).
Trait Gambler and a risk-taker (e.g. poker-faced, try anything once, lives on the edge).

Some of the background I've posted in character introductions.
Leland's father is a well-known and respected figure in the book dealing community. Leland strives to gain his approval. Leland's older brother was the fathers favorite and heir apparent to the father's business until his untimely death in an auto accident. Leland lives in his brother's shadow and can never seem to live up to it or to please his father.
Leland knows Josh through Josh's writing of several occult and horror themed short stories. Josh came into Barlow Books one day doing research for a story he was working on. Josh has since used Leland's knowledge and resources often for his writings. The two have formed a friendly and professional relationship.
Leland knows Gregory in much the same way as he knows Josh. Through Gregory's use of Leland's knowledge and resources on the occult and supernatural.
Leland and Harmon have worked together in the past assisting each other in research, etc.
And Leland is acquainted with Max as the latter has visited Barlow Books on several occasions.
This sound reasonable to everyone?

That's entirely up to you, think about what you might carry and any particular possession you might keep in your home that you have collected over the years. It doesn't need to be a detailed list and things can be easily obtained. I don't worry too much about money, you have a certain amount of cash in the bank for large purchases, assets that encompass your home, car etc and you'll have a figure for daily expenses, how much you can afford for things you need immediately.
Credit rating 30 - average
A reasonable level of comfort, three meals a day and occasional treat.
Accommodation: an average home or apartment, either rented or privately owned. Expect to stay in moderately priced hotels.
Travel: standard forms of travel can be used, but not first class. In a modern-day period, this person would be likely to own a reliable car.
Cash in the bank: $60
Assets $1500
Daily Spending level: $10
