Podreg slowly nods, and sighs. "You're right," he says, "I am torn apart by what has happened. I will tell you that Dommic has a favorite hunting spot, where he goes to think as much as hunt. It is that way, half a day's walking to a precipice about thirty feet high that has a good view for deer and boar. The trail is faintly marked by old blazons on the trees, a symbol of four slashes like a bear's claws. The entrance to the trail is by that pair of birch trees and the rock."
Oct 21, 2022 2:56 am
Having grown up in a city, Danill is a little uncertain about his hunting abilities. But he looks eagerly to the "other" Guardians to lead the search for Dommic.
Oct 21, 2022 9:01 pm
Ognimir checks on Maple, to see how she's doing after the mirror wolf attack and saddles up if she looks good to go.
Oct 22, 2022 12:58 pm
Damir moves alongside Ognimir and gets ready to leave with his companions.
Oct 23, 2022 4:09 pm
Quintus Quail saddles his shaggy mountain horse, secures his modest collection of equipment, then climbs into the saddle. As he eases his mount into formation with the others-- he is no great horseman, having lived most of his life in the city-- he risks a jaunty hand-wave back to Podreg.

"We thank you for your honesty and your aid, sir," he calls. "We shall be true to our word, so far as your brother permits us."

Having said his farewell, and in company with his fellow Guardians, Quintus sets out upon the trail indicated by Podreg. His horse goes at a lazy trot, slow enough for Danill Krahl to keep up. If he hustles.
Oct 23, 2022 6:03 pm
And hustle he does.

"When do--" huff, puff "--when do I get a mount? Are all Guardians supplied with them?"

He dodges a bush as he strides along, asking his questions.
Oct 23, 2022 7:05 pm
"Are you taken so much with us three?" Damir let's his mount circle around to meet the huffing man with a grin and a good natured twinkle in his eye. Then he extends a hand to offer Danill a place behind him. "That a Guardian you wish to be?" Damir helps the other up and accelerates his horse's trot. Time to find the murderer!
Oct 25, 2022 3:14 pm
The branches above you are bare but for frost, the dry leaves crackle under the hooves. Damir's steed will not go beyond a slow trot, being weighed by two adult men. Still it is quicker than walking.

Morning sunlight, out of a harsh blue sky, sends your shadows wavering over the trunks and leaves ahead. The ground slopes gradually upward. The trail is marked enough that you can follow. It runs as straight as any woodland trail might do, that is, it swerves around some little bogs and potholes and one gigantic dead tree, but mostly in a line.

When the sun is a bit past halfway up the sky behind you, and your horses are getting hot, they pause to drink from a stream where drifts of mist rise into the chilly air.

High above, a pair of eagles duel.

Before getting off his horse, Damir looks around once more and decides that this might make a nice resting splace for a little while. He worries about getting seen and scans the surroundings for any of the landmarks and signs Podreg has talked about.
Oct 26, 2022 7:42 pm
As Damir looks away from the stream, he sees something like the precipice that Podreg mentioned, about a bowshot away.

And then something punches Damir hard in the shoulder ... looking down in startlement, he sees the shaft of an arrow sticking out of himself. Then he moves a little and feels the head of the arrow grate against his shoulder ball, and feels the pain.

Quintus Quail all but tumbles from the saddle in his haste to dismount. He snatches his crossbow and quiver from the saddle horn, then scuttles through the underbrush in the direction of the nearest sturdy tree trunk. The bearded man puts as much heartwood as he can between himself and that fatal precipice.

They might be able to talk Dommic down-- for surely the bowman must be Dommic? But not while he's peppering them with arrows.
Oct 27, 2022 12:47 pm
The lodged in Damir's shoulder gives Danill quite the shock.

"Damir, you've been shot." What else does one say?

Seeing Quintus head for cover, Danill thinks that's a great idea.

"Come one man, in to the trees!"
OOC:
He's gonna, likewise, hop off the horse crouch low behind a glacial erratic boulder at the tree line.
Oct 27, 2022 9:05 pm
As far as anyone can tell, the arrow came from the precipice.

Damir sways in the saddle then somehow slides down on the side away from the likely source of arrows. The horse shies and neighs.

What do you all do now?
Oct 27, 2022 11:20 pm
Ognimir readies his shield and backtracks the path of the arrow to gaze at the precipice. Then he lifts his shield for protection from that angle.
City ambushes were one thing, but forest ambushes...he's not even sure where to start.

Ognimir studies the landscape, looking for a way to flank or approach that precipice. Hoping he can ride Maple, but knowing he'll likely need to dismount. As soon as he sees a reasonable way to advance, he will.
Oct 28, 2022 12:53 am
Peeking from behind the boulder, Danill likewise looks for a way up that will keep him out of arrow shot. But for the now he's OK the shooter knowing his position. Maybe he can even be a distraction for the others...

"Dommic! Is that you mate?! It's me, Danill!"
Oct 28, 2022 1:28 pm
Quintus risks a glance round the side of his chosen tree at the precipice beyond. He's looking for any figure or sign of movement up there. Quail wouldn't know Dommic by sight, but perhaps they'll get lucky and their attacker will answer Danill's call.

Abruptly, an arrow splinters and bounces off the top of the boulder behind which Danill crouches.

There is no voice to answer your hails.
Oct 28, 2022 4:20 pm
I should have expected that... oh well, distraction it is...

"Now I know it is you Dommic! You can only hit people in the back!" he shouts.

"You an' your brother both ain't half what you think you are; probably why Ciara chose the other lad!"

Danill hopes the others are capitalizing on this "distraction", or that it's even working.

He peeks up ever so slighly.

Damir still has an arrow jutting out from his shoulder, the feathers bob around each time he inhales. He's breathing shallowly because the pain is pretty bad.
OOC:
Rules about arrows

While an arrow is stuck in you, it can do additional damage if you exert yourself. (This is how many bow hunters eventually get their quarry - chase it until it bleeds out.)

Removing an arrow can do additional damage unless it's handled by a surgeon.

what is the procedure for trying to remove the arrow? I can leave it in and slowely bleed out or remove it and risk further damage. Is there an option to maybe break off the shaft, then bandage it to stop the bleeding? What would I roll for this? thx :) and just to be clear: I had 4hp and one arrow in the shoulder brings me down to 1hp. So would removing the arrow just kill me?

For each significant exertion, or if you remove it, I will roll d6. Odds, you suffer 1 additional hp damage.

Damir looks around and assesses the situation. He cannot help his people with the blasted arrow protruding out of his flesh, sending waves of searing pain through his body. The boy got him and he got him good. Shall the lovesick hunter be the end of him?
Gods knew.

The Guardian seeks shelter among his fellow fighters and slides behind another boulder close to Ognimir and his raised shield. He nods to his old friend and swallows hard. Damir feels for the head of the arrow. It has not come out on the other side of his shoulder. Unfortunately this means he cannot push the projectile out unassisted. Pulling in the direction of the shaft might cause even more damage depending on the type of arrow. So the warrior decides to leave the head in for now. With a smooth movement he breaks the shaft of the arrow close to the wound. Then he tears some fabric from his shirt and starts wrapping his shoulder as best he can.

With Danill distracting-- not to say enraging-- the archer above them, Quintus Quail takes the opportunity to scuttle from tree trunk to tree trunk. He's trying to work his way around the side of the promontory, to a position where he can see, and therefore target, their foe.
Oct 30, 2022 1:12 am
Quintus scuttles tree-to-tree up a moderate slope to the left of the precipice, his feet crackling and scuffing in the autumn leaves. It's chilly despite the sunlight, especially along his spine where there's a stream of icy sweat.

The scholarly Guardian gets to a spot where he has a clear view of the top of the precipice. There's a man with a bow up there, crouched, arrow half-drawn, intent on Quintus' companions, waiting for an opportunity to strike ...

Ognimir holds the shield protectively and watches as Damir works on the arrow.
He reflects on the mystical dreams of last night and wonders if Diminish Golem as a spell would help at all with this arrow...but feels it is unlikely.
OOC:
What does Diminish Golem do?
Oct 30, 2022 6:52 pm
The arrow shaft is stiffer than Damir expected, and the barbed head is not embedded as deeply as he thought ... when he tries to snap the shaft, instead he wrenches the arrow head painfully out of his shoulder with an accompanying gout of blood that slows to a trickle, which soaks his shirt and armor. He feels faint ... spots of light and black waver before his eyes.

As Ognimir winces in sympathy with his fellow's plight, a swift shaft hums over the edge of his shield and gouges a furrow across his left temple before thudding into a tree behind him.
OOC:
Ognimir (-1 health)
I reckon a Diminishing Golem spell might:
- summon a small ambulatory poppet that insults people
- shrivel a menacing automaton to 1/10 scale
- other? (your ideas are welcomed)

Quintus raises his crossbow with bitten lip and queasy bowels. It doesn't seem sporting to shoot a man in the back, but then neither was it honorable of their quarry to fire upon them, unannounced, from a position of stealth and vantage.

Desperate times, on all hands.

Quintus trains the crossbow's bolt upon the stranger. He narrows his eyes, exhales softly, and pulls the trigger.

Damir focuses on a small spot on the ground for a moment. He concentrates on his breathing and wills away the darkness lurking somewhere behind him - around him, trying to overcome him. He feels the wound with his fingertips and welcomes the sharp pain - it brings him back, helps him clear his head.

He hastily ties a piece of cloth around the injury and looks up ahead. Damir witnesses Ognimir getting shot at, Danill is crouching and waiting close by. From his point, Damir cannot see Quintus, but guesses he has made his way up the hill while the shooter has been giving all his attention to the three other men approaching.

Damir gets his own shield in position, then follows the young man up the precipice. He does not draw his sword just yet as he reckons he has to get closer. The Guardian carefully makes his way trusting in his party to work together. "Oy!", he shouts. Distracting the shooter might help Quintus reaching the right spot. But just as he raises his voice, Damir hears the sound of Quintus' crossbow.
Oct 30, 2022 9:35 pm
Quintus doesn't see where, exactly, the bolt strikes Dommic. But he sees where the impact takes the young huntsman: over the edge of the precipice, a nasty tumble through the air and an impact upon the earth that seems to jar Quintus' bones.

You all become aware that you are breathing, and that Dommic probably is not.

Damir falls to the ground.
