Chapter 4: Bazzoxan

Nov 9, 2022 11:50 pm
It's another day of constantly watching your backs, trekking over hot, arid, cracked flatlands, and ducking behind the stone barbs protruding from the ground to hide from fiendish monsters on the surface, flying above it, and grumbling beneath it. But eventually, on the horizon there is a series of red, brown, and black spires and peaks that come into view. The path leads towards it, and finally you come upon your destination...

Bazzoxan.
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/cotn/HJ1ybS42ooBqdXzF/03-003.bazzoxan-scene.png

Large, black, metal walls surround the military outpost that is Bazzoxan (BAZZ-oh-zan). The streets of the city rise sharply from the entrance gates, seemingly leading up into the sky itself. But lording over the city, visible from any angle, is the largest building you've ever seen. An enormous cathedral whose spires rise high enough that you're nearly looking straight up to see the tops. Ever-darkening clouds swirl around its towers, trapped in their orbit.

The front gate opens slightly and a squad of four highly armored and armed Aurora Watch soldiers files out, then another soldier steps in front of them. Above them on the wall, countless longbows and crossbows are trained on you in anticipation. The leading soldier holds one hand up to command the crossbows, and another out to you all to stop your approach. The man, blessed with both the cunning of drow ancestry and the power of orchish lineage, spends a few seconds looking over you all with a keen eye. Judging all kinds of things: wealth, strength, magical ability, motive, etc. He speaks out to you in a deep, grave, authoritative voice.

"Halt. State you're business in Bazzoxan, travelers." They wait expectantly for an answer.
Nov 10, 2022 1:49 am
Auras was amazed and also couldn't help but think "gods getting there going to be exhausting and take all day by itself." then the guards came out and had arrows and bolts trained on them Auras for a second time was feeling insulted "like where in all the hells was the artillery least have a cannon pointed in our general direction" she took a deep breath to calm herself and said good day to you my good sir I am Auras I am here for some historical research. my mother, you may or may not know of her. Archivist Witashnah Shadowwhisper has sent me to confirm or deny some historical texts that make some bold claims. I was told you would be made aware of my arrival. if that isn't the case I would very much like to discuss the matter with your commander if possible. auras smiled" but I know they must be busy and I am tired from the journey so I am open to waiting at someplace with proper lodging until the commander has time for me. auras said sweetly. hoping she could at least get inside without making a fuss after that though things could get complicated. she hoped she could get some help from her compatriots though she didn't trust them any more than they trusted her but they needed to work together to get everything to go smoothly. "my traveling compatriots are my protectors to and from here. I do hope there hasn't been a mix-up that would cause delays."

Hidden within his cloak, Faelan spents the rest of the journey very thoughtfully. Again and again his gaze wanders to Auras. Is she in cahoots with Ayo's group?

As the group arrives at the gates of the famous village, the half-drow tilts his head back to look at the temple. Inwardly, he compares the building to the Lucid Bastion in his beautiful hometown of Rosohna. But this one is gloomy while the stronghold with all its colourful lanterns is much more vibrant and inviting.

Addressed by the guards, the warrior pulls back his hood and slowly removes his fencing gloves. This gesture reveals a gold ring with an embossed coat of arms, identifying him as a distinguished member of Den Hythenos. The noble raises an eyebrow in amusement as an answer to Auras introduction and clarifies: "We looked out for each other during the last leg of the journey." Since he doesn't want to get involved in anything dubious their new travel companion might be up to.

Looking the soldier at the gate up and down, he continues with an grim expression: "I too would like speaking to the commander of the guard. Regrettably, we bear sad news out of the wastelands."
Nov 10, 2022 9:37 am
Tereze stays silent, offering no more than a grunt in agreement to signal she was with the others instead of a more elaborate explanation. Instead her gaze was fixed on the grand cathedral.

What an evil building. Likely filled with even eviler inhabitants. She felt an instinctive pull to her warhammer. An overwhelming demand on her senses to push past these fussy gatekeepers, storm right up to the church doors and start pummelling.

She wasn't one for staying in one place for long, but she reckoned that cathedral would look a darn sight less malevolent if it was devoted to Sehanine, or at least any deities that didn't attract surrounding clouds of doom.

Kailani steps around the curious woman and approaches the leading soldier. Other than Auras and Faelan, she speaks with lower volume, giving the impression of familiarity with the man. "As the ... more esteemed members of our company have explained, 'tis research that brings us to your fine city. Finding out stuff and the like - you understand. We also bring some intel privy to the higher-ups. Found some... bodies, you see. Gruesome business."

She takes a step back and beams at the armed delegation. "I am Kailani Hauaka. 'Tis my first time in Bazzoxan. Surely you can help us find our way and earn praise for recognizing such distinguished guests before your gates." The woman gestures back at the nobles, riding the bandwagon of what they had started. Certainly she can throw their weight around as well.

A little quieter with a wink and cheeky grin she adds"Wouldn't mind learning of a good tavern, myself"

Tereze swears she spots some dubious, hateful figures lurking in the dirty stained glass windows watching them arrive from all that distance, but maybe it's just the feeling of such, because it's way too far to actually make anything out.

The main guard listens intently to each of your reasons, assessing you each individually and attempting to pierce any fronts. He makes a swift whistle sound, and keeps his eyes trained on all of you as, without moving from their positions, the four guards behind him begin scanning the surroundings: the ground, the skyline, the sky, the wall, everything to make sure you are alone. They each give a quick, concise, trained "clear". The leader whistles again and the guard split and take posts at either side of the gate, keeping the entryway open for you.

His tone remains stern as he continues what seems to be the standard welcoming to the town, "I will take you to the commander for your business. You may keep your weapons on you, but do not try anything funny. The streets are not safe, but they are heavily patrolled. Demon and devil attacks are frequent, therefore you must always stay together and be on standby while within the city walls. The commander is busy, so prepare your business as we walk. Follow me."

He turns and walks into the entryway, simply expecting you all to follow. (Assuming) You enter the gate, you immediately notice how tense this town is. There are pairs of Aurora Watch patrol on nearly every corner; you are never not within sight of at least two sets of eyes. The buildings here are old and bruised, showing signs of both ancient and recent battles. You even spot the occasional blood splatter that has accidentally been overlooked. There is a noticeable lack of average citizenry in this town. For every person you see without the Aurora Watch cloak, there are 10 with one. And even those without are clad in full armor with a weapon or spellbook within reach at all times. There are very few shops. What would be parks or trade centers are training grounds. Most of the buildings appear to be barracks, mess halls, or storage.

"You may find the taverns in Bazzoxan lacking, traveler, seeing as there are none. You can find rooms, food, and a beverage at the Ready Room, but you do not want to be caught inebriated when a legion of demons finds a new escape route from the Rise."

"We do not live in Bazzoxan, we defend it. If you are within the walls, you are responsible for defending the town and all of its residents. THe Kryn Dynasty and consequently all of Wynandir is at stake here, we cannot be caught unprepared or backstabbed."
He promptly stops dead in his tracks and swivels around to face the party. His eyes narrow and he growls severely, "Understood?"
Nov 12, 2022 1:13 pm
As might be expected Faelan had heard of the Bazzoxan and the heavy duty the Aurora Watch had to shoulder around here. But seeing it with his own eyes is something completely different. Silently admiring the guards and their discipline, the fighter follows the half-orc through the gate and listens carefully. It could mean the difference of live and death in this extremely remarkable place.

"Understood." the noble replies instantly and wholeheartedly.
Nov 12, 2022 3:43 pm
Kailani nodds. She will help defend those that need defending if it comes to that. The woman cocks her head to the side in contemplation, then asks: "Who, if you don't mind my asking, chooses to live here as resident besides the soldiers and those who aid them such as ...blacksmiths maybe? What kind of people inhabit the streets other than the Watch? And has there been much ... hostile activity as of late?"
Nov 12, 2022 10:32 pm
Tereze watches the civilians as they pass by. It seemed unlikely she'd have any contacts here, even ignoring the spooky cathedral. That was unfortunate, she and they could do with some allies like their recent companion, Auras. Though, the guardsmen at least were tolerating their presence.

After a nod of agreement to defend the town, Tereze raises her voice to ask a question. "Is it at least quiet enough to sleep at night undisturbed? There is a night watch?". She supposed the taverns probably had some defences, even if it were just a lock on the windows.
Nov 13, 2022 2:59 pm
auras was amazed at the ease they were being let in and allowed to keep their weapons and tool. tho given where they were it wasn't a surprise. they where more terrifying things than them in this wasteland and below their feet. auras nodded "inescapably clear." auras was amazed at the security and amount of the watch here. this obviously was a very important location, now the real challenge getting into the temple. auras then whispers to Faelan "so the name Alyxian obviously means something to you and your friends. so are we going to help each other to help him. or are we going to be getting in each other way and possibly doom him? I much rather prefer that we help each other rather than us becoming enemies or worse. it does us no good and there is no profit in it for either of us" auras sighed not all profit is silver and gold. there are things much more valuable than that such as knowledge and wisdom.
Nov 13, 2022 3:48 pm
Confronted with the fact, that Bazzoxan won't be a pleasant place to gather some intel before taking their following step, Faelan continues his own line of thought of what to do next and how to accomplish that. The half-drow clad in his well kept, dark attire doesn't seem too much out of place here. His apparel reveals his noble origins, for it is not foppishly shows how much gold it had cost, but is of considerate craft, just shy of an understatement. Practical - just like his gilded rapier with its well-worn hilt at his left hip.

Shifting his blue eyes to Auras, the Roshonian listens very carefully without letting an emotion show on his dark features before the woman has finished her thoughts. Pensive he replies with barely a whisper: "You are right. The world has gold enough and is in need of wisdom and knowledge. We are not here to harm somebody, but to right an ancient evil. The details aren't clear to us either, as they came as a very vague vision." Giving the dancer a moment time to digest these news, the noble continues after they have passed a couple of people standing too close for his taste. "So let's meet our common friend together and see where this takes us - for I can't tell."
Nov 13, 2022 4:00 pm
Kailani, having overheard, nods in agreement and smiles encouragingly. Her thoughts aren't quite as sunny, though. Dark work lies before them.
Nov 17, 2022 11:47 pm
The commander's intense glare slackens slightly as the party affirms their comprehension of the fragile and important situation here in Bazzoxan. "Good. Continue with me." He swivels his massive form on one heel and continues down the streets.

Without turning his head, he responds to Kailani as they walk, "The residents here are either the loved ones of someone stationed here permanently, craftsmen employed by the Watch, or just plain stubborn." He eyes and nods to gnollish woman who passes the group, who hollers back over her shoulder, "Damn right!" The commander continues, "Some of the best warriors and adventurers throughout the Dynasty's history have decided to retire here, so that they don't lose their edge. They and their descendants own the only proper houses in town."

https://www.dndbeyond.com/avatars/thumbnails/24407/168/400/613/637828636927085942.png

Eventually, the commander stops in his tracks and salutes at a young drow warrior armored from head to toe in beautiful, shiny, but certainly well-used armor with a spear at his side. The man is speaking to three other Auroras Watch members, giving them orders and directions, occasionally requesting advice from them. The drow, clearly someone of high rank and respect, notices your arrival and dismisses the other three Watch soldiers.

The drow takes his horned helmet off, revealing an elegantly handsome but weathered face with long silver hair. He sets his helmet down on a barrel behind him and leans back on it. The drow leans on the barrel, surveys the group, then nods to the commander, "Commander, at ease. Friends of yours?" he smiles.

"Taskhand Thelyss, this party just arrived to the station, requesting to meet with you."

The Taskhand considers for a moment, "Thank you, Commander. You may return to your post."

"Yes sir." The commander immediately turns and begins heading back the way you came.

The Taskhand looks to you expectantly.
Nov 18, 2022 3:09 pm
Peeking up as the commander of this town - and the resposibility of overseeing a "city" like Bzzoxan comes with - is presented. Happy that he had kept an eye on his appearance, the noble from the capital straightens just a tiny bit before striding in front of the officer. A Taskhand, nonetheless. A leader and high-ranking military official, with the ear of the queen through rank alone.

Bowing with all etiquette and grace the young half-elf posses, Faelan looks up and greats the man from Den Thelyss in formal undercommon: "Shaded skies and sharp blades, Taskhand Thelyss." with an admiring undertone.

"This are happy times, it joys my heart to see you again. Well and highly decorated.

You may not remember, but Faelan Hythenos is my name and my elders and I have been guest two years pasts on your mothers' famous end of summer ball in the Lucid Bastion."
Examining the armored man up and down for a moment while the fighter awaits an answer, Faelan tries to remember the nobles first name and how long the Thelyss has been Taskhand of Bazzoxan.

But couldn't for his live recall this piece of information...

Kailani gives a brief nod, then focuses her attention elsewhere. Faelan and Auras would make sure they are treated as persons of importance. This should get the whole group some leeway in the city. The young woman is sure that between those two, Thelyss woudn't have much choice - he would have to comply with their wishes. Kailani feels no need to engage in this conversation. She trusts Faelan to do his thing and having the scholar now as well might help.

Instead she concentrates on her surroundings. She looks at the place, seizes it up. How many have they seen on their brisk walk, what kind of defenses? What treasures? What part of town is this and what has it got to offer? She lets her eyes wander inconspicuously and trusts her situational awareness to help her learn what she needs to know right now.

Tereze's eyes instinctively slide to the helmet. A fine piece of craftswork, and elaborate. Possibly someone born into this position? Though, by the subtle marks on their armour and blade, it seemed they weren't there on inheritance alone.

Calculating how best to introduce herself, and not ruin the other's attempts, she settles for a short salute. She reckoned it was probably more appropriate than a bow or some other display of reverence. Besides, she never liked bowing down to someone she hadn't had the chance to verify was worth bowing to.
Nov 23, 2022 12:38 am
Kailani begins surveying her surroundings. This town is old and has seen many a scuffle, plenty a battle, and perhaps a siege or three. But calling is a town is a misnomer. This is a military station, a fort. The walls around the city are tall and thick, mostly to keep things out, but perhaps sometimes to keep them in when they escape their temple. The town is all the same; there was no difference between the buildings near the entrance and the buildings around her, everything is built to survive, not to thrive. This place has little to offer, besides maybe the Rise at the top of the mountain.

The Taskhand acknowledges each of your nods and salutes, but at Faelen's formal greeting, the Taskhand immediately pushes off the support he was leaning on to face Faelen respectfully. He smiles and gives a very slight bow, returning the traditional flipped phrase in Undercommon "Ah, sharp skies and shaded blades to you, Hythenos. I'll be honest, I don't remember most of my mother's end-of-summer balls: I was always absent, sometimes physically but most of the time mentally." He chuckles, and Faelen doe snow remember how much the Taskhand enjoyed his cups, but the man never got out of hand. "But I am glad to see you again. I have certainly changed much since the last time you saw me, those were simpler times, before I was posted here in Bazzoxan."

He seems wistful for a moment, but immediately returns his smile and turns to Auras with a hint of vague recollection on his face, "Uh, yes. I do believe we received some sort of correspondence from the Archivist of Shadows, but unfortunately, we don't have the resources currently to aid you very much. There is a squad of Aurora Watch escorting a team from the Cobalt Soul through the Rise as we speak, and that took weeks to organize. I know there are a few scholars in town, an archeologist from -"

Just then, the ground shakes. The Taskhand immediately throws on his helmet and spins his glaive to the ready.

One bell gongs in the distance. Then another one, considerably closer. Within a few seconds, the air is filled with chimes and loud resounding booms. Shouts and screams begin to arise. The Taskhand begins to run off but then noises begin coming from all directions. He takes a moment to consider, then shouts back at you all in much more authoritative and commanding voice, "We are under attack! Find a safe location or follow me to fight!

"Now!"
Nov 23, 2022 8:36 am
Also remembering home, a little less fondly, Faelan nods and smiles at the recollection of ... aehm ... Taskhand. His name, what was his name again? "We all change with the challenges we face." the half-drow replies sympathetic with a familiar saying. True none the less. Holding back something in the lines of "Your character represents the sum of the battles you fought." the fighter reaches into the interior pocket of his cloak to retrieve the dog-tags he collect on their way down here as the earthquake hits the outpost. Reflexively bending his knees the nobles hand rests on the hilt of his rapier within a blink of an eye, while expecting incoming enemies. All this talk about demons and fighting them off, had left an impression on the roshonian.

As the Thelyss starts running Faelan falls in line right behind him without needing to hear the man's orders. The shield slips on his arm and the fighter turns to his friends: "Let's make ourselfs useful!" while drawing the keen blade he carries into battle.

As before, Kailani feels for the ocean as an immediate answer to the upcoming threat. As before, she feels out of reach with the deep, a bit lost in this halls made of sand and stone. Her resolve wavers for a moment, even as she runs with the others. Then she thinks of how brave her companions have been, when they were surrounded by an element foreign and intimidating for them and Kailani once more finds her grit. She is a daughter of the sea no less - and she isn't alone. Together with her new found crew, she can face anything - even demons of the desert.

Tereze unstraps her warhammer from its leather straps and slaps it into her two hand grip. "Time to uphold our promise. We can chat more later"

You all follow quickly behind the Taskhand Thelyss as he sprints through the streets. The ground continues rumbling, constantly threatening to trip you up and bring you to the ground. The streets around you erupt into chaos. Sounds of ringing bells, gongs, screams, shouts, deep rumblings like colossal machines whirring to life and lots and lots of... loud ... squelching.

You emerge from an alleyway behind the Taskhand, who puts his arms up to his sides to stop you from going in front of him. The reason is immediately clear why as a sense of vertigo suddenly kicks in as you stand mere feet away from a deep and wide pit bore into the street. Emerging from it and covering the tunnel's walls are extremely large and shape blades that are slowly beginning to spin around the mouth of the hole.

Around you there are a number of scenes playing out: terrifying goopy blobs of yellow eyes, whipping tendrils, and monstrous teeth slowly amble and eat anything they come across, and in one corner a group of Aurora's Watch members surrounds a barbed devil and all take turns hacking away at it with their weapons just as it spears two fully armored soldiers through their chests, and howls gleefully as it does so.

Kailani hears and feels it, before she actually sees it - the battlefield. For this was what comes closest to the scene in front of them. She quickly gathered a little energy and focused on her friends. Confusion comes with the type of battle that lies in front of them, she has learned that the hard way and wants to make sure, she knows where Faelan, Tereze, and Auras are at all times.

Like her brother in arms, the Ashari focuses forward. She hears Faelan's cry and plans to heed his advice - they have proven to be a good team already - when suddenly Auras casts her energy in a different direction and pulls one of the more menacing foes closer in their direction. What is she doing? As Kailani is stunned by this move, Faelan has the right idea and puts up his grand shield to protect his comrades.

Kailani shakes off her surprise and taps into her own peculiar kind of magic. Her power solidifies and turns into the deep sea tentacle, the others by now have seen a number of times. Instead of trying to aid the soldier in the pit, the young woman positions the spectral form next to the creature Auras has just drawn off the roof and slams into it with force.

The Ashari's manta reacts to its master's unease at suddenly being so close to such an abomination and helps by plummeting down towards the creature and slicing at it with its wings. Mizu quickly gets out of the way as Kailani uses all the chaotic actions the fiend finds itself in the center of and sends a blast of freezing deep sea energy his way. She has to protect her friends! - maybe some soldiers can be saved as well...

Running to the left of Taskhand Thelyss Faelan feels the rumbling earth beneath his leather boots. With the drawn weapon in hand he follows the drow commander onto the place and keeps his eyes moving so that they don't ran into an ambush. But instead of an ambuscade it seems more like open warfare as he lays eyes onto the blood smeared machine in the center.

Just as he wants to aid the hard pressed soldier down in the pit, Auras surprises them all and pulls a snarling devil close. Without hesitation the fighter changes his plans and summons his Shadow and plants it in the fiends way. Not sure if his attacks will suffice, the Echo stabs twice at their enemey.

Staying near the Taskhand the fighter hopes that the man has powerful magic at his hands to turn this brutal battle into something more favorable for the Aurora Watch.

Immediately the chaos of the scene is thrust upon you all. A barbed devil is yanked from its position on the roof above you and crashes beside Tereze. Verin sees this an switches gears, "You all seems capable enough. Gang up on this devil here, I'm going to go help the guards who need it!" He begins to head over to the guard (black) currently facing off alone with a barbed devil.

That guard, however, is currently taking this duel in stride; in full armor, the half-orc woman swiftly dodges a flurry of hooked claw and spiny tail attacks from the grotesque monster.

However, Faelen is not quite as lucky. The barbed devil's attention lands on him, and while he avoids a single claw and a tail attack, the second claw slashes across the side of his face. It stings like hell, but he knows it'll be a sick scar.

"Gah!" Tereze grunts as she tries to hold her ground against the barbed devil. "I'll protect you, clear up these monstrosities" She calls as she clicks the fingers on her free hand and conjures a pale blue glow to surround some of her companions. It seems to move erratically, but every so often it pulses in the same direction as them, emphasizing their movements.

The changling hasn't been able to relax, even up entering the city, mostly sticking to the goliath form, clutching their bag and its contents close.

As the turmoil of combat breaks out it's almost like a odd sense of calm falls over her. The anticipation of dangers, the waiting, all of that was now over and she was in her element.

Even as the devil crashes down next to them she turns to let out a bellowing command echoing across the battlefield far more than the cheery Ardeth or snarky Veliath, though it is magic infused just the same.

'Halt!' The magic washing over the devil, and the two closer gibbering mouthers, trying to freeze them in place.

'Just stay focused and we've got this.' She spekas in a gentler yet still somehow commanding tone as she locks eyes briefly with Faelens, trying to instil some guidance.

The barbed devil before you stops in its tracks at Grana's words, its horrid, venomous breath washing over you all from behind its rotting needle-like teeth as it angrily waits out the effects of the spell. But unfortunately, Grana's words fall on deaf ears to the gibbering mouthers as they continue to slowly shamble and loudly gibber about the battlefield.

As Verin splits from the group, he is momentarily shocked to see Faelen's echo take form next to him. He gives a slight smirk and respectful nod to Faelen as his own body suddenly splits in two, an echo of himself forming from the shadows of his glittering armor. The echo of his stops at the gibbering mother (black) between the party and the other devil, feigning attacks to distract it, while he continues to help the lonesome soldier.

The gibbering mouthers all continue to splat their goopy tendrils on the various Aurora Watch soldiers on the scene and chomp at the feet, but none of them can pierce their armor, and Verin's echo expertly dodges the attack thrown its way. However, the mouther nearest the party spots the large group of people, and hocks a bulbous, spongy loogie that arcs through the air and lands directly in the middle of Auras, Faelen, Tereze, and Kailani. The glob of spittle explodes in a blinding light, forcing you all to turn away quickly. And the orange does the same to the blue soldier.

But, the surprise of the attack catches Auras, Faelen, Kailani, and the blue soldier off guard, and your vision is immediately blurred and burned to the point of momentary blindness.

Catching the Taskhands shocked expression Faelan feels as he grows an inch or two, because of how proud he feels to be noticed for his skill by the fellow noble. Readying his rapier, unable to penetrate the thick hide of the devil for now, the half-elf doesn't pay attention to the rest of the battle and pays the price for it, as the Gibbering Mouthers' Blinding Spittle(tm) hits him and truely blinds the fighter for a few seconds.
Cursing like a marquetian sailor, the half-drow lunges forward with his blade and pulls off two daring strokes to defy the devil.

Then he brings back his shield to guard his friends from the outsider. "Tereze? It felt like I stabbed it good! Did I draw sufficient blood from this barbed mongrel from out the pitiful deeps?! Faelan asks his friend with a broad smile. Maybe this way the entity would concentrate on him instead of his comrades.

Kailani forces herself out of the blind stage as if emerging from the darkness of the deep. She needs leverage. With yet another gift of her ancestry, she thinks herself up the very roof, the devil has been torn from only seconds ago. From there she sends her energy down to the creature so close to her new found family and cuts him twice (-23hp), while the sheer force of her attack pushes him forward and into the pit.

The woman takes two steps back to breathe. From up here, she can really see the machine in the centre of the square for the first time. It was ... a kind of giant .. mixer? Well, they will have to use their surroundings, if they hope to win!

"I pushed the fiend into the pit. There are rotating blades at its center, so don't fall in!" Kailani shouts to her comrades. She hopes they will regain their sight soon - not only for themselves, but for the soldier down there who'd really need their help now...

Everyone takes turns slashing and blasting at the nearby barbed devil, until Kailani's first eldritch bolt sends the frozen-in-place devil sprawling across the shoddy cobblestone road. The guard near the trap leaps out of the way as the second of Kailani's blasts sends it hurling itself directly into the spinning, twirling blades of the trap. Exactly an entire half of the guard and all of the surrounding ground is instantly covered in a splatter of steaming hot, black-and-red blood as the devil is immediately eviscerated by the trap. Because of the halting spell from Ardeth, the devil does not even have the chance to scream as the blades of the trap tear it apart in a matter of a second.

The guards all get another round of attacks on their respective targets in, while the only remaining devil lashes out at Verin, who expertly and deftly dodges every single one.

Tereze holds up her Warhammer to the sky, the cresent moon engraved upon it glowing brightly with a blue sheen. She saw the others struggling with their sight, hopefully this would help them a bit.

As the devil turns to mulch, Tereze turns around to cheer the group on. "Excellent work Kailani!" and attempts to do the same to another monstrosity.

This thing was slippery and had far too many teeth. She didn't know where to put her hands! The opportunity was lost and Tereze spent a few minutes instead wrestling with the horrid creature.

Verin and his shadow unleash another round of attacks on their respective enemies, and each hit hurt them more and more.

The shambling mounds of goop and flesh, teeth and tongues all finally begin gibbering a loud, cacophonous sound that penetrates each of your heads, forcing you to wince at the noise. Verin's echo vanishes after one of the mouthers bites into it. Meanwhile, the blue guard is brought to near unconsciousness after dodging one gibberer only to fall directly into the mouth of the other. The monster's horrible teeth pierce the soldier's armor, and at each point of contact between them, the soldier's armor and flesh begin dissolving, causing screams of pain that just barely cut through the monsters' loud babbling.

Auras was getting annoyed with all the gibberish these monsters where spewing. Seeing one of the guards near death near the death trap she knew what she had to do taking a risk she moved to the deathtrap moving close perhaps too close to the mouther in front of her. im going to help that guard watch my back! as she moved past the mouther it trying to bite at her. Hoping her invocation would hold... then seeing the guard about to be beaten casted her eldritch blast castsing two beams one at each of the monsters of madness once again turning them into chains. Hoping they entangle and drag the mad monsters into the death trap in front of her. And hoping it did the heavy lifting for her. "come here!" she would scream once more in a voice not her own.

Feeling thrilled that his skill with the blade had ended a threat to the group, Faelans gaze falls on the fight on the rooftop next to all of them. Letting go of the handle of his steel-rimed shield the half-drow extend his free hand and tries the ancient magic of his blood against the mouther up there.

Suddenly the creature seems to be weightless and floots 20 feet in the air. Hanging there help- and harmless, the noble smiles a equally satiesfied and surprised smile. "Shoot the slimball!" he barks at the soldier and points his chin at the javelin thrower one roof down.

The guards, for the most part, are able to all struggle through the monsters' incessant gibbering and still get their attacks off. The guard on the roof nods in appreciation to Faelen and then takes advantage of the levitation of the mouther next to him by taking a quick moment to catch his breath as he gets out his crossbow. He fires a bolt up at it but it cuts through an unnecessary portion of the creature, causing steamy, bloody goop to rain down on top of him.

As she emerges from the rooftop, she unbuckles a small axe from her waist and sends it hurtling towards a demon on a nearby building. It neatly slashes through one of the many mouths it has, cutting across the creature's form, and making two separate mouths into one.

The wind whipped her hair around her as she surveyed the scene. It seemed the fight was beginning to turn to their side. She let out a guttural roar of encouragement to the others.

I think in reality that building would be a house/barracks so you'd have to go in through a door and then to the stairs and up, so it'd probably be a little longer than 35 feet, but in this case it's fine lol
Verin, feeling invigorated by the turn of the battle's momentum and Tereze's war cry, executes a flawless, graceful maneuver, slicing the barbed devils with three quick slashes. Barbs and blood go flying through the air as the devil crumbles to the ground, unmoving.

The blue gibbering mouther gibbers and groans sadly and pathetically as slowly rotates in the air, held aloft by Faelen's spell.

The one of the purple gibbering mouther's many toothy mouths makes to attempt to swallow the green guard, forcing the soldier to backpedal. Unfortunately, the other mouther saw the soldier's movement coming and stretched the largest of its shifting mouths wide enough that as the soldier slipped on the green mouther's goopy extremities, they fell entirely into its open maw. The mouth closed, silencing the screams of pain coming from within.

Unsatisfied, however, the mothers begin very slowly shambling over to the next available targets.

Faelen, Auras, and Ardeth don't forget you're blessed!

I just realized I forgot something very important for the gibbering mouthers, their gibbering! They babble so incoherently and so maddeningly that everyone at the start of your turn roll a DC8 wisdom saving throw if you are within 20 feet of a gibbering mouther (right now, I think that is everyone)! If you fail, roll a d8 and then consult the below table for what to do on your turn:[/b]
1-2: Can use only one of: action, bonus action, movement
2-5: Do nothing
6-7: Make one basic attack at the nearest creature and then end your turn
8: Move 30ft in random direction (d4, clockwise starting at up)

Satisfied, that the soldier on the roof is out of immediate danger and Tereze takes care of the mouther, the noble leaps into the pit and runs forward. With a lot of respect for the whirling blades, the half-drow keeps his distance to the murder machine in the middle, which by now, is flooded in blood and sprays franticly everything in its vicinity with a red iron-tasting mist.

Faelan summons the Shadows inside this gruesome place anew and attacks the mouther that has swallowed the soldier mere seconds before. Maybe he can be saved?!

Grana

The goliath lets out a yell l as she watches one of the guards get absorbed. It was a battle, causalities were to be expected but it hurt none the less. These creatures, their lack of language meant a lot of the bards spells were ineffective. Yet she wasn't ready to wade in with her rapier. Just yet. She starts muttering under her breath, and magic caries the words to the mouther, infused with energy as usual.

Motivated by seeing one of their own go down, the guards each take one last round of attacks on their targets, cutting through and cutting down the last non-levitating mouther. Faelen and the nearest guard search through the rapidly decomposing body of the green mouther, but find little more than the corroding armor and dissolving flesh of the guard who was sadly eaten by the demon. The final, levitating mouther poses next to no threat, and is shot out of the air eventually through a combination of crossbow bolts and magic blasts.

The guards take a moment to catch their breath and mourn the loss of one of their own, but you get the sense that this is not uncommon here in Bazzoxan, for the pause doesn't last long. Demonic incursions and soldier deaths are frequent here, and within a few moments the soldiers are all beginning to clean up the streets and power down the death trap in the middle of the pit.

Verin walks over, kneels down beside the body of the soldier, closes his eyes, and mutters something under his breath while clutching the symbol of the Luxon dangling from his neck. Afterward, he nods to the soldiers to begin disposing of the body and turns to you all.

"I appreciate you all for helping defend the city, we are honored to have you amongst our ranks for the time being. Please, catch your breath while I finish up here, and then we can pick up where we left off." He nods and bows, then turns to speak to his men and women in arms, ordering some to clean, some to send messages elsewhere in the city, and whatnot.
OOC:
For Faelen, Unleash Incarnation was not necessary to finish off the green mouther, and i stuck Grana's dmg onto the purple mouther

auras was silent after finding what was left of the soldier that was eaten by the devil. before going over and started punching a wall frustrated with herself punching it over and over till her knuckles started bleeding. tears running down her face as she tried her best to keep herself from screaming. all she could hear was the voices in her head "failure why didn't you save him? Little auras what a waste of space. failure what failure" as she kept pounding the wall these damn voices the self doubt the loathing worst part would be tonight she would dream of ayo leaving once More and life losing all its meaning. auras wasn't sure how much she could take completely forgetting the wound she suffered at the hands of the mouther her blood staining her clothes her wound visible to all. Gods, how worthless and useless was she?

Tereze watches silently at Auras's emotional outburst, panting slightly after being on high alert throughout the combat.

That was his job. The soldier surely knew the risks involved, as did they when they walked through the gates of Bazzoxan. She shrugged over to clean her hammer, making sure whatever ooze and ichor those beasts consisted of would not dull its edge.

It was callous, but Tereze didn't know them. Now, if it was one of her new companions? They were worth spilling tears over.

Standing inside the pit, Faelan turns 360° around to catch all of what is happening and making sure that there is no immediate threat around. Cleaning and sheeting his rapier in the blink of an eye, he also makes sure that none of his capable friends is in need of assistance. This had been brutal fight, but they had made it out to the other side better than one might expect against devils and servants of hell.

Getting over to the drow noble, the rosohnian speaks to the commander of House Thelyss: "We are sorry for your loss, Taskhand. It is us, who are greatly honoured by your praise and the display of the capability of your guard. Brave women and men, each one of them, laying down their lives for the Dynasty. Light upon the fallen!"

Remembering something he reaches into a pocket and retrieves the rest of the dog-tags they had found the day before. "Yesterday, as we came across the Barbed Fields, we encountered and neutralized some other demons. They were just what was left, after a patrol had found and fought them. This is what we could retrieve from there." Faelan gracefully presents Verin with the pendants.

Taking a step back, the warrior would be grateful for a moment to gather his strength before they continue to the temple, but as he notices Auras self-harming behaviour the noble of House Hythenos calls their newest team member: "Auras? What are you doing - the fight is won! The walls are on our side - there is no need for more blood sheth right now." Exchanging puzzled looks with Tereze and Kailani, the drow fighter is unsure what is happening. Is this a stress coping mechanism, or some kind of PTSD? The roshonian had witnessed this behaviour with people who had seen too much. So he walks over and asks quietly: "What is it, Auras?" While handing a fresh bandage to the tall magic user, so that she could wrap her wounds.

Kailani, unfazed by their new companion's drama, comes down from her position and walks right through the carnage and up to the Commander. She does not interrupt him, but makes sure she is in the field of his vision. When it seems he has given all necessary commands, she approaches him for the first time.

"I offer my sympathies for the loss of your warrior." She pauses for a brief moment, then continues.

"Our journey here was ... very ... dry and longer than expected. We gladly stand by your side, should you need us. But first we require a short rest and drink ... maybe food as well. Could you point us in the direction we should follow?"

Her manta glides through the air above their heads, momentarily painting them in moving shadows. "Also, you were talking about scholars in town?" Kailani glances at him and tries to assess this leader. She does not mind that he's tall and quite handsome, either. Well ... business first.

Auras momentarily pauses punching the wall looking at faelan before letting one last frustrated punch out. "we could have saved him.... i could have saved him. I should have been able to save him. Death is sad and life is priceless. I don't understand how you all are so together aftwards.... auras pauses maybe im the problem.... as she takes the bandages and dries her tears with them before wrapping up her hands. one of the mouthers got me good. 'While his death is to be mourned, we soldiers would rather it ours than someone else's. He gave his life to protect his city. May the Luxon guide his soul on. The goliath puts a gentle hand on Aura' s shoulder before morphing a turn green as suddenly an orc is giving the warlock a warm smile.

Nodding at Ardeth's remark, Faelan complements with a warm smile: "There is a Beacon that collects his soul and grants it the next step." This is the way (of the Luxon). Fealan rest assured with this knowledge and tries to convey his sureness to the young woman. Is she not a believer of the light? How strange.

Looking Auras up and down he remarks as well: "Let us take a breather. We might need this before we enter farther into the city."

auras nodded slowly after chewing on the changelings words and looked at faelan " I'm aware of the way of the luxon.... more so than you know. sadly my people aren't popular anywhere anymore. we were well regarded once highly respected and proud of our station but in the years after calamity well. we have fallen a great deal. my mother is the reason we stand somewhat in the light now instead of the shadows. though many in our town point to the past as to why we can never stand like before and that mother is a fool for trying. still our patron picked her to lead us and i can only hope to be worthy of following in her footsteps someday." auras then focused her mind closing her eyes and muttering wood that where divine but old very old older than the gods in some cases. her wounds healing and closing up. albeit very slowly. once done auras opened her eyes "there. much better" then smiled "so what the plan now?" she asked.

Wondering what the magic user means by "My people", but this seems to be a topic for another time as they are in the aftermath of a very dirty fight.

After they had time to tend to their wounds, clean their equipment from all the mouther-blood the razor in the middle of the square had sprayed everywhere and maybe some food and drink like Kailani had proposed, Faelan comes back to his feet and takes a look around if Taskhand Thelyss had returned in the meantime.

In either case the half-drow fighter remarks: "Let's follow our path further - to Alyxian!" Maybe the priest would be able to spread some much needed light on this extraordinary tale of vague visions and unexpected company.
