Use this thread to discuss your characters and build them. Assume that the starting city is New York, for convenience, It won't matter much once things get rolling.

While waiting for this to roll out I came up with my plan.

Summer Beach, a college freshman. A former high-school cheer captain. She is from a small town upstate and moved to the city looking for adventure, but didn't really have a plan for her future. The problem is now she is feeling overwhelmed. She was bored back home, being a big fish in a small pond, but now she's just another pretty face in the crowd. College is proving stressful, every girl on the cheer squad was a captain themselves. In school she was secretly a fantasy novel nerd, and loved old movies like Labyrinth and Never Ending Story. So this portal thing opening up near by she's thinking this might be her chance.

Stats wise she is a very generic character, but skilled in Athletics and good at motivating people...sometimes via intimidation and humiliation, a "Mean Girl" if you will. Her father was a good ole'boy and since he didn't have a son to teach, he taught her a little about survival, fighting and shooting.

Hello.

I wish to play Jack Spriggings. a 12-y-o boy with a knife, buffer jacket and big, bright trainers. Edges like: luck, Elan, More luck, scavenger etc, as and when i can take them.....

I'm thinking a member of the military who got out after their first or maybe second tour, and lacks any clear-cut direction... sort of looking for what to do next. Working "low-end" jobs (so, working far too hard for far too little) and living paycheck to paycheck while they flounder, a ship without a rudder. Misses aspects of their time in the military, but wouldn't go back for love nor money. Has an ex and a kid he lost during the divorce, who are about 3000 miles away from New York.
Nov 16, 2022 4:43 pm
Except for the ex and child, you described my life about 25 years ago. I had just left the military after two tours (actually, I was kicked out for weight control) and had no idea what I wanted to do. And yes, if some strange portal had opened nearby, I would have gladly taken the risk and entered.
Nov 16, 2022 4:56 pm
I did one tour (6 years though) myself, and -- while I've never been married, and had my son after I was already out -- I also relate a lot to the character.

I still don't know what I wanna be when I grow up. Lol

Edit: It's worth pointing out that I saw a lot of my fellow Marines with this same general issue as well. Especially if their MOS as one that didn't translate well into the civilian job market. I feel like this backstory is one that resonates well with most anyone who served... it was either them, or they know people it happened to.

I think I might play someone who's more mystical and spiritual. Someone who never quite felt that they fit in with modern society. Certainly helps when a ticket away from the mundane appears, no?
Nov 17, 2022 2:49 am
That's fine! The more varied the character talents, the better.
Nov 17, 2022 11:37 am
nice. I'm making a boy. wanna play around with throwing bennies all over the place. also trying to think / act / speak like a child is a bit of a challenge.

Without possibly spoiling anything, will vehicles/driving be a part of the alternate universe?
Nov 17, 2022 9:42 pm
I would submit that... it doesn't matter.
Nov 17, 2022 9:48 pm
Actually, vehicles may well come up. You aren't going to suffer without the skill, but it wouldn't hurt to have someone with it.
Nov 18, 2022 12:53 am
How should we handle buying our stuff? Just go with what we'd naturally have in present day?
Nov 18, 2022 7:56 am
Knife, jacket, sling, cool trainers, and some cash. Done. 🤣

So thinking of creating a former F1 racer who is arrogant, thinks he's on his way to being one of the best. Gets into a terrible crash during a premiere race, sustaining pretty bad injuries, including his leg, enough so that he has to quit racing. Now he's lost, works as an auto mechanic/gas station clerk. While working there, finds out he to has an aptitude for repairing things, but yearns to go back to the thrill of racing again.

Have him built in savaged.us, just need to port over and submit in GamersPlane.
Nov 21, 2022 9:14 am
savaged.us takes a bit of getting used to. the format / layout is a bit counter-intuitive sometimes but it is amazingly powerful and flexible.
Nov 21, 2022 4:52 pm
Alright... submitted. I think I'm ready to rock.

(I still think cammies, hiking (aka combat) boots, and a parka should be free. Do we know anyone who got out of the military who didn't just happen to accidentally hold onto some issued gear? 🤣)
Nov 22, 2022 2:05 am
Just need to sit down and fill out the sheet. Weekend was stressful.

Out of curiosity, would I be able to take an arcane background, or would that be better to pick up later?
I was thinking of having it be a thing for my character, but only having true effects take place once they step through the portal.
Nov 23, 2022 2:59 am
I don't have an issue with an arcane background used in that instance, where it only activates once you enter.

Submitted John LaRue! Driven (no pun intended) to be the best, after a horrible race car crash his bones (and dreams) were shattered. Working as a car mechanic/gas station clerk, and addicted to painkillers, he still longs to be the best.

Ha! Love it!

Do all skill start at unkonw and buy up from there?
Are hindrences limitd to 1 major and 2 minor?
Basic character is done other than shopping and some clean up. I think.
I will be playing Shawn a robotics engineer who has been into sci-fi fantasy since he was a kid so when the portal opened he had mixed feeling, possible horrible monsters vs new world to explore, but decided to risk it.

Five skills automatically start at d4 (Stealth, Notice, Persuasion, Common Knowledge, and Athletics). All other skills are 'unskilled', which typically roll as d4-2.

Because we're in a modern setting, you now get a total of 15 (instead of the default 12) points to spend to raise any skill.

So you can spend a point to raise an Unskilled skill, let's say Fighting, from d4-2, to d4. You can spend a second point to raise it to a d6, and so on. The caveat being it's one point per die increase, up to whatever your attribute die is. If trying to raise a skill past your attribute die, you have to spend 2 points. So if your Agility is a d6 (which is what Fighting is linked to), and you want to increase your Fighting to a d8, it's two skill points. If you want to raise fighting further to a d10, it's another 2 skill points.

You can take up to four total points of Hindrances. These be two Major (2 points each) or four Minor (1 point each), or mix and match however you want, 1 Major and 2 Minor for example. You can take more Hindrances if it fits your character concept, but you only ever get 4 points total in regards to using them for extra perks at character creation (new Edge, increasing your attribute die, more skill points, etc)

Thanks. I found the default skills just after posting earlier then saw your post. Still looking over the rules at this point though I think I am clear on my character. I hate shipping during the holidays but never plan ahead

I was wondering if it was ok to buy a cell phone and a solar charger, to keep the phone powered. I figure the phone is a handheld computer and the charger would cost 50+ but as it isn't explicitly in the rules wanted to check. With my character background I thought it could be interesting to try and see how to use our common comforts and concurrences on an adventure
Dec 8, 2022 8:56 pm
Sure, I'll permit the charger for $50 and the phone is a handheld computer.

I think my character is about done except the background which I will add tonight. Take a look and let me know if anything needs work

Okay, I'm not sure how you got all your Traits. You get 5 dice to put into Traits and all start at 1d4. By my reckoning, you have 7 dice of traits. You also have five Hindrances, which is fine, but you get a maximum total of four points (either four minor, two major, or two minor and one major). Your skills look okay, and you have two Edges. As a human, you get one free Trait. If you bought four minor Hindrances, you could have gotten one bonus die to put into Traits and one extra Edge, which still puts you at one die too many in Traits.
Dec 8, 2022 10:26 pm
Yep, just miscounted on the traits, removed one. I may remove one of the hindrances. I just added a bunch that fit the character concept.

Okay, got my character submitted. I'm still looking for a suitable portrait for her tho.
