Chapter 1: The Portal

Be sure to read and follow the guidelines for our forums.

Nov 15, 2022 1:47 am
OOC:
We're going to kick off and anyone who is not ready can join in when they get their character done.
Entering the portal, you feel your stomach being wrenched in different directions and for a moment, you fear that you may empty the contents of such. Then, the feeling passes. You are standing in a wooded clearing. The air is warm and the sunlight on your body feels good in contrast to the cold climate of New York. Turning, you find that the portal that you stepped through is gone! There is no sign of it from this side.
Dec 19, 2022 1:33 am
Stumbling a bit as he steps out of the portal Shawn struggles to keep his lunch down. Glancing around quickly looking for any immediate danger he cinches his pack tight in case he needs to run. A tall lean man, just out of college really, with dark hair, light skin, and green eyes. Dressed in sneakers, jeans, and wearing a light hooded sweater he stands ready to run while assessing the area quickly then with more care.
Dec 19, 2022 9:10 am
Zaqueue (a.k.a. Zak) is a young boy. Possibly early teens, with matching attire: jeans, puffy jacket, cool trainers. After steadying himself he is equal measure of confusion and aggression. To any other humans that underwent the same ordeal. "Who are you? where are we? what happened?"
Dec 19, 2022 11:50 am
Wes sits down to regain his composure and let his stomach settle, taking off the black watch cap he had been wearing as it's now entirely too warm. Sitting there in combat boots and cammie trousers with a faded OD green sweatshirt, it's obvious he was in the military or was a huge fan of the aesthetic. He doesn't seem overly tall, but it's obvious his muscles have muscles. He runs a hand over his shaved head and looks at the kid.

"I'm Wes. Don't really have answers for your other questions."
Dec 19, 2022 12:33 pm
"And I'm Zak." and I proceed to explore a..... ooooh, a full 10ft radius! :-P
Dec 20, 2022 11:48 pm
The area you are standing in is a wooded clearing, surrounded by thick forest. The trees here are quite tall, some measuring at least 60 feet or more.

Anyone with Academics (Biology) can make a roll at -2. If you don't have the skill, you can roll 1d4-4 (and don't forget your wild die at -4).
Dec 20, 2022 11:58 pm
I'm Shawn, from California.. Looking around here pauses to listen. . .
Did you two step through the portal? Where are you from?
OOC:
do penalties apply to the wild dice?
How do penalties affect Aces?

OOC:
Yes, penalties do apply to the Wild Die, but you made it easily enough so...
You notice with some interest that several of the plants in this area are odd. The it strikes you. They haven't existed for millions of years!
Dec 21, 2022 3:51 am
John is almost disappointed when the stomach churning sensation is over. For the briefest moment it brought him back to how he felt at the start of every race, just before the go light went off. Not that he would ever tell anyone that of course.

He's surprised to find others here, he thought he was the only one who could see the portal. Gathering his things, he walks over to the other three with a slight limp in his right leg. A lanky, tall man with blond hair spilling out of a dark cap on his head, leather goggles rested atop the brim. Youngish but with a slightly beat up and weathered looking face. He wears a white undershirt with a navy jumpsuit covered in what looks like grease and dirt. (If we were casting, he'd be played by Owen Wilson) "So that was trippy, ey?" he says, with a just barely detectable accent. "I'm John by the way."

Looking around the area, it dawns on him the winter weather is gone! "Where the hell are we?"
Dec 21, 2022 5:45 am
As soon as Lilith is on stable footing, she looks around. Not at the scenery to try and make sense of it all, but for a spot to - *ulgh!, yeah. After taking a few moments to simply breathe, she brushes some stray strand of hair from her face.
"Ugh... That was thoroughly, urp, unpleasant..." she mutters, clicking her tongue as she finally starts to look around.
"Oooo, my head... Erm, I suppose you all could just call me Lilith. Not Lily, just Lilith. Please."
Dec 21, 2022 11:08 am
Pick a random direction, walk to the edge of the forest... look back.... pull knife out and shrug.

"You never know who or what is...."
Dec 21, 2022 2:21 pm
Hold up a sec Zak. Everyone quiet for a moment Shawn tries to keep everyone together and quiet for a moment. He explains he want to listen for water or movement. While listening he will also look around for any small trees or branches to make simple clubs or staves. Water will be important, anyone have a water bottle or any other container? We are more likely to solve problems if we pool our resources. Any one got a lighter? Zak's knife can help us make walking sticks or clubs for those who want them, just in case. Also we are more likely to find other people if we follow the water. As he explains he takes out his phone, checks for any signals and turns off all services that are useless to conserve battery life then takes a couple of pictures of the area we arrived at.

"I've got a pair of canteens in my bag, and a canteen cup. They should be mostly full," Wes replies, "And a survival knife. It has a few waterproof matches, a flint, some fishing line, a couple of hooks, a wire saw, and a compass in the pommel. I guess if we're going over all out assets, I also have a solar powered LED flashlight, it's waterproof and can charge my phone. Oh, and a first aid kit. Nothing too expansive, but it's something at least."

Dibs! Uh I mean, mind if we stick together? All I have is a few snacks, extra layers for weather, my phone, and a solar charger for it. Well I also have my multi tool but I'm not seeing the need for a screwdriver much around here.
You carry all that stuff with your all the time? I bet you were an eagle scout or something weren't you?
Shawn chuckles as he gives Wesley another appraising look.
Dec 21, 2022 4:21 pm
"Eh, Marine actually. I did my first enlistment but wasn't a fan of all the politicking BS so I didn't re-up. After I got out, I realized... I didn't really have a plan," Wes chuckled as he stood up, adjusting the web belt running the beltloops of his cammies. "Came back to New York, and was sort of job hunting and couch surfing. Kept the shit with me because streets aren't always welcoming, y'know?"

He sighs and looks around. "Water runs downhill, so unless we want to go up for a vantage point, generally heading down isn't a bad idea. We can make some weapons... although we're gonna look like assholes if we end up walking into a 7-11 with pointy sticks."
Dec 21, 2022 4:38 pm
Chuckling at the idea of a 7-11 after stepping through a random portal Shawn replies Natural walking sticks are kind of in with the outdoorsy crowd. I think we could pull it off. In the meantime having anything bigger than my 3" utility knife blade seems pretty good to me, as does heading down hill. I'll look for a good walking stick on the way
Dec 21, 2022 8:03 pm
"I was taking a walk in the park. I have a knife, a sling, some cash because I was gonna meet my g/f...." here he pauses a tiny bit. "A watch, phone, nothing else. My mum's gonna kill me....." here it looks like a pause but it ends up being the end of his sentense.
Dec 21, 2022 8:51 pm
OOC:
The phones get cell signal; not a strong one, but enough to place a call. You can find plenty of fallen branches from which to make spears/clubs/walking sticks.
Dec 21, 2022 8:53 pm
Before they start walking, Wes will tap his phone lightly and then try to call one of his buddies.
Dec 21, 2022 8:54 pm
To his surprise, Wesley gets an empty ring.
Dec 21, 2022 9:07 pm
Shawn disables all wireless functions at this time but turns on the GPS disabled trip tracker with low accuracy. Just in case the need to back track.
Dec 21, 2022 9:26 pm
WhtKnt says:
To his surprise, Wesley gets an empty ring.
does that mean it rings but no1 answers?
Dec 21, 2022 9:39 pm
OOC:
Yep. That's what it means. The phone rings, but no one responds.
Dec 21, 2022 10:12 pm
"Worth a shot," Wesley mutters as he drops the phone in his pocket before adjusting the straps on his day pack and getting ready to move.

"We ready? Not sure where we are or where we're going, but I'd like to try and find somewhere better than here before nightfall. I can run point unless someone objects?"
Dec 21, 2022 10:21 pm
I wonder if we can call each other? And who is getting the bill? He will get one of the others numbers and try to call them.
MaJunior says:
".... I can run point unless someone objects?"
Sounds good, just stay close?
I just don't want to lose track of you and get lost.
Dec 21, 2022 11:27 pm
The call goes through to whomever you are calling within the group. The reception is scratchy but understandable.
Dec 21, 2022 11:42 pm
That's . . . odd. I will grab a decent walking stick, then likely find a better one a few minute later as I trail along.
Dec 22, 2022 5:44 am
"Have you seen some of the people that frequent 7 Eleven in New York? Trust me, we'll fit right in with our pointy sticks.". At that he grabs a nearby branch that seems hefty enough to use as a club and follows Wesley. "I brought pretty much the same gear as you all. Wanted to travel light, so nothing too crazy. Two LED flashlights, a medkit, some power bars and bottled water, a few Car and Driver magazines in case I got bored." with a slight smile to himself at the last item.

Glancing over at Zak, with a raised eyebrow, "By the way, why are we letting that kid swing around a knife like it's a gymnastics baton?"
Dec 22, 2022 12:56 pm
Wes looks back with a shrug. "His knife."

Then he pauses mid-step. "Wait... did you... plan... to end up here? Because I just saw a... portal, I guess you'd call it? Anyway, curiosity got the better of me and now I'm here. You sound like you planned for this.
Dec 22, 2022 2:00 pm
OOC:
@ctme2000 The picture I see for John is all black
Looking curiously at John Shawn chuckles a bit
I wouldn't say I planned it either. More like I saw a dream come true and jumped at it. Only now I'm wishing for a how to guide book or local encyclopedia
As a bit of a joke he pulls out his phone, turn on the service and asks Hey Google, where an I? though with the phones working here he wonders . . .
Dec 22, 2022 2:16 pm
"I didn't plan for it per se. I saw the ... portal, a few weeks back. Surprising to say the least, especially when it seemed no one else could see it except for me. I kept being drawn to it, like an itch that needs to be scratched."

He pauses for a moment, "Let's just say things weren't going so well back home. I imagine any normal person wouldn't just blindly walk into that thing if they had a happy life already, no matter how curious?" looking at Wes and then the others. "Or sane," glancing at the kid again, "Really, no one else is worried about this?"
OOC:
yup, aware. Re-uploaded pic, no go. Will try it on my laptop later. Thanks.

"I think you underestimate the power of curiosity," Wesley states simply. "Although, you have seen it for weeks? I've been through the park multiple times, this was the first I've seen of it. Weird."

He pushes through some plant life, looking for anything resembling a trail or pathway of any sort. "He's just a kid with a knife. So no, not particularly. He's probably the biggest danger to himself. If you're worried, get a longer pointy stick."
Dec 22, 2022 2:32 pm
I'm pleading temporary insanity/curiosity. Looking over at Zaq, or "Knife Kid" as he has been labeled in Shawn's head. What's the big deal. I've seen six year old's with more dangerous things in their hands in New York. Freaked me out back then. Definitely not like back home. The way I see it, right now we really have no idea what to expect so the more people we have with possible solutions the better. Besides, have you ever tried to take something from a kid who doesn't know you or want to give it up? Idlely he pulls up maps and a web browser search as well, just in case. Weird things are definitely on the menu for the day.

Grinning at Shawn, "Let me guess, those dangerous, knife wielding kids were hanging out at a 7-Eleven?"

Throwing up his hands, "Fair enough and points taken.". He goes through his backpack, making sure all his stuff is still there, then closes and readjusts it. "Lead the way Wes."
Dec 22, 2022 8:39 pm
"you guys are over-focusing on my knife. It is purely out for self-defense. I can put it away if you prefer but i would be lying if i said i was not a tidy bit scared....."
Dec 22, 2022 8:59 pm
Aw... come on kid, no need to be scared. Go strait for mind numbing terror, the mental clarity it brings can be liberating. and Shawn chuckles. Besides we got us a real marine as out point man. We wont need you. Other than checking out the dank, dark, cramped holes we find with mysterious lights flickering in them. I mean, the rest of us are too big and we couldn't do that to a girl, could we? and gives a friendly smile to Lilith

Zak puts the knife away but keeps his eyes to the ground. Whenever he spots a nice stone (just the right size for his sling) he quickly grabs it and carries on walking with the group. He will collect about 10.
Dec 23, 2022 3:08 am
Lilith had been quiet, looking around their new environment. Such a strange place, such beautiful nature. Far more than what she could find living in such a bustling, overcrowded metropolis such as New York City. She muttered a quiet prayer to Jord as she stayed at the back. All she had was a dagger she used for her practice, a lighter, her cell phone, and a blanket she brought to the park to sit on.
She returned a glance back to Shawn, but said nothing. Instead, she thought, and she thought. Her clicking tongue can be heard behind her closed lips to anyone close enough.
Dec 23, 2022 4:08 am
The brush to the left of the group rustles as if something were moving through the underbrush.
Dec 23, 2022 4:26 am
Wesley will investigate the underbrush.
Dec 23, 2022 4:49 am
Wesley is surprised as a small feathered creature about the size of a turkey pokes its head out. It is covered in feathers but is clearly not a bird. It has a mouthful of razor-sharp teeth and walks on two legs, with a tail for balance. It looks sideways at Wesley and emits a strange cooing noise.
Dec 23, 2022 5:29 am
With Wes covering the bush, Shawn watches the surroundings, a bit nervously
Dec 23, 2022 7:17 am
Lilith cranes her neck around to get a better look at the creature. At first it looked a bit frightening, but then, cute?
Dec 23, 2022 3:27 pm
"Ok, two questions. One, what the fuck is that... and two, do we think it's edible?" He draws his survival knife and, keeping it behind his back, leans down a bit to get a better look at... whatever it was.

OOC:
Everybody can make a Notice check and those with Academics (Biology) can make a check against that, as well.
Dec 23, 2022 5:26 pm
Glancing at the teeth Shawn comments Based on its appearance it is a predator. Chances are if it tried to eat you, you can eat it. before returning to scanning the rest of the area. Still nervous as multiple movie scenes run through his mind.
OOC:
Do not go into the tall grass!

"Allow to me explain at length how little I care," Wes replies. "Food is sort of important, you get what you can, when you can. What if we don't see another animal for weeks?"
Dec 23, 2022 10:44 pm
OOC:
Yes, it was Shawn who noticed the plants and to the best of my knowledge, he has not yet mentioned this.
Everyone is quick to notice the rather impressive claw that tops its feet. If it brought the claw to bear, it could easily cause serious damage.

WhtKnt sent a note to Psybermagi
Dec 23, 2022 11:39 pm
"We either need to kill it and keep moving, or just keep moving," Wes says, rather decisively. "Let's pick one and get on with it."
Dec 23, 2022 11:52 pm
From the treeline to your left, there is a strange sound, like a burst of compressed air, and the creature suddenly staggers, then slumps to the ground. A bearded man wearing a uniform emerges from the treeline, carrying a rifle. "Who the hell are you idiots?! This is a restricted zone!"
Dec 23, 2022 11:57 pm
Quietly to the others Um, yeah. That's a dinosaur and half of these plants should be extinct Then louder to the newcomer We are sorry, we got a bit lost. We didn't see any notices.
Dec 24, 2022 12:04 am
"Oh thank God, a person" Wes sheathes his blade. "Sorry, sir. We don't know where 'this' is, or how we got here."
Dec 24, 2022 12:47 am
"You're damned lucky I came along when I did. That raptor could have slit your throat! And you know the penalty for killing a protected animal." He checks the creature for a pulse and then retrieves something from its body. "Tranquilizer dart. It'll wake up in about an hour with nothing more than a headache. You're just lucky it wasn't a T. Rex, one of those wouldn't have hesitated to make lunch of you."

He extends a hand to Wes. "Sorry, guess that I could have been a little less aggressive. Name's William McKinley. I'm a warden. But that doesn't explain who you folks are and why you're in a restricted zone. How'd you get past the fences?"
Dec 24, 2022 1:59 am
"No, actually we don't have the first clue about any penalties. We were actually debating if we could eat it," Wes offers. "It's nice to meet you, Mr. McKinley. I'm Wes. Wesley Boulder. We... aren't from around here? As I mentioned, we aren't even sure where 'here' is. There was a... portal, I guess you could call it? Anyway, it was in Central Park. And now, here we are. I know it sounds hard to believe, but I swear it's the truth."

A raptor?! Lilith thought to herself, bewildered. A portal was one thing, but a raptor was another. Perhaps this portal was not the gateway to where she hoped... She remains quiet in the back.
Dec 28, 2022 2:11 am
"Dinosaurs? Extinct plants? ... Are we... Is this some sort of Jurassic Park?" John asks in a bewildered tone. A wave of naseau suddenly hits him and he abruptly sits down, waiting for it to pass .... when was the last time I had some?
Dec 28, 2022 9:30 am
You know I told you I was scared?
OOC:
he pulls his knife out. Which is just a NICE kitchen knife. Not a rambo survival knife.
Am I ok to be scared now?
Dec 28, 2022 1:17 pm
"Probably not," Wesley laughs. "The... whatever that dinosaur is... is sedated. And nothing we have would save us from a T-Rex."
Dec 28, 2022 3:19 pm
"Jurassic Park? Well, yes, I guess you could call it that. This is a game preserve. The dinos here are protected. That's why the fences are there. It keeps them in and the public out. Our computers didn't indicate any breaks in the fence system, though, so how'd you get in here?" McKinley looks genuinely confused. "Where did you folks say that you were from?"
Dec 28, 2022 3:30 pm
"We were all in Central Park in New York city prior to entering the... gateway? Portal? Whatever it was. Although... there were no dinosaurs anywhere on the planet."
Dec 28, 2022 3:48 pm
Shawn begins examining the ranger closely. Are there any identifying badges or other words and are they legible? Shawn imagination wanders through possible scenarios. Is William speaking English or does some translation seem to be happening? The portal has been mentioned a couple of times any reaction to that? I'm not to sure about this full disclosure thing but may as well go with the flow.
Dec 28, 2022 6:30 pm
"Central Park? Heh, if that's Central Park in New York then you're a long way from home! This is the West Coast Dinosaur Preserve, south of Los Angeles. I don't know anything about a portal, though. Never heard of such a thing. Wait! No dinosaurs... anywhere?" Now William eyes you suspiciously. He wears a name badge above his right breast pocket that reads "McKinley" and his uniform looks vaguely like that of a game warden. He also wears a badge on the left side that looks very official. The fine print on it is difficult to read, however. He does seem to be speaking English; his lips are in sync with his words.
Dec 28, 2022 6:41 pm
"Correct," Wes assures him. "Anywhere. So, you can imagine our surprise."
Dec 28, 2022 8:00 pm
"Dinosaurs? gonna be keeping me this knife here....."

"Handy - I'm all kinds of deadly with this!"

John rummages in his backpack, pulling out an item from it and places his hand to his mouth, seeming to swallow something. After a few moments he seems to relax. "Or maybe Jumanji?" with a slight smile. Getting up and holstering the backpack, "Shawn is right. We should find somewhere safe to go first and plan from there.".

Looking at the warden's tag, "McKinley, is there such a place nearby?"
Dec 29, 2022 1:22 pm
OOC:
Zak kneels, places the knife on the ground and ties the shoelaces (of his beautful, red basketball boots) that are usually flapping in the wind. Then he picks up his knife, stands up and with a wry smile anounces:
Just in case Zak the Dinosaur Slayer needs to run.....
Dec 29, 2022 2:42 pm
"Of course. C'mon, we'll take my truck back to the security building." He leads you to an ATV parked nearby and you all pile in. The ride to the security building is brief and after a short time, you are inside a fortified building filled with computers and monitors. McKinley offers you a coffee and takes a seat behind a row of monitors that show various locations on the preserve. He clicks a few switches and the views change. "Nope, no breaks in the fences," he says aloud.
Dec 29, 2022 3:44 pm
While William is checking the fence Shawn looks at anything he can. Most ranger stains have maps and others stuff posted for quick access, he hopes this place is the same. Starting with maps, then pictures, then any notices, bulletins, flyers, or other literature he looks for any indications of where they are.
Thinking to himself This guy speaks English, knows New York and LA. It must be a Parallel world, but their general public dosn't know about the portals.
Out loud he says How big exactly is this preserve?

From everything that you can see, you are in North America, though there are two large areas blocked off on the west coast and in Florida, indicating that they are dino preserves. The one on the west coast is labeled, appropriately enough, the West Coast Dinosaur Preserve. The one in Florida is labeled Walt Disney Dinosaur Preserve. The west coast area stretches from south of Los Angeles to nearly halfway to San Diego. "The West Coast Preserve is 400 square miles, bordered by the 5 and the 15. The Disney preserve is by necessity a little smaller, though."
Dec 29, 2022 7:24 pm
BTW, I've seen a few sci-fi movies in my time, what year is this?
OOC:
apologiez iff this has been asked b4 and I missed it
Dec 30, 2022 8:39 pm
"The year is 2022." McKinley replies.
Dec 30, 2022 9:02 pm
Common geography, common language, common calendar. Definitely a parallel reality. Shawn asks William Can we get a ride into town? We're really sorry to have caused any trouble.
A trip to a library or anyplace with internet access could clear things up. Having a familiar setting has reduced a bit of the excitement but dinosaurs prove there are some variations.
I wonder what else is different
Dec 30, 2022 9:47 pm
I ask him some basic questions: like who is prime minister, who won the <<notable event>><<notable year>>, who won WWII, latest release by <<famous band>> does he know who Elvis is, etc...... just to eliminate the parallel universe hypothesis. We might be in our own familiar world.....
Jan 1, 2023 7:32 pm
"Sorry. I don't keep up much with British affairs, so I don't know who the PM is. The Cubbies took the series in 2016, the first time since 1908! The Allied Forces won WWII, defeating first Hitler and then Japan. The 46th President is Joe Biden, who succeeded Donald Trump. Elvis was a rock-and-roll singer. He died sometime in the 80s, I think. Do I pass?"
Jan 1, 2023 7:43 pm
And dinosaurs have been around since prehistoric times? What about dragons, magic, and aliens? Shawn ask, the second question more of a joke though with possible significant meaning.
Jan 1, 2023 11:52 pm
John is a bit taken aback as the warden states facts about this world essentially being the same as their own. Not exactly what he was expecting when he stepped through a magical (?) portal. If anything, with dinosaurs running about, this world seemed more dangerous.

He's keen to hear how the man answers Shawn's question, wondering if there are any other notable differences.
Jan 3, 2023 5:38 am
Psybermagi says:
And dinosaurs have been around since prehistoric times? What about dragons, magic, and aliens? Shawn ask, the second question more of a joke though with possible significant meaning.
Prehistoric times? Yeah, they were around then. It's amazing what science can do, isn't it? A little dino DNA here, a little science there, and BOOM! Dinosaurs live again. As for the other stuff, magic? Nope. Aliens? Uh-uh." McKinley seems confused by this line of questioning,
Jan 3, 2023 11:15 pm
Lilith gives the guy a bit of a stink eye in regards to magic. She feels its pull to her, but would the spells she made even work?
In this strange world, maybe .. just maybe...

so.... what kind of mischief can we get up to here, i wonder? I'm thinking this portal could be dangerous. who built it? who controls it? you don't want random ppl from NY wondering into here and you definitely do not want dinosaurs roaming into Central Park. We must destroy the portal, find whoever built it and..... well, we got questions that need answering!
Jan 9, 2023 1:29 pm
"Why are you so quick to assume it was built?" Wes asks the question as he turns. "Maybe it was magical? Or some previously unknown natural occurance? Multiverse theory is a thing. Maybe the two realities just overlapped for a short while?"

He will poke around the station, looking for other differences between this new reality and the one they left.
Jan 9, 2023 1:41 pm
i ponder this deeply.
Either way 'tis dangerous. What's to stop dinosaurs from wondering free into the heart of NY? then again - not sure how to investigate this further and/or what to do about it......

Shawn agrees with Zak but is at a bit of a loss Whats next? Do we try to go to a town or stick around and look into it here? Is the portal two way, controlled, random? Too many unknown.

I think we tried to walk back though but we were told (again, i could be mistaken) that you see no sign of it on this side. so might need a gentle nudge from the GM possibly to find some hints.
One of the lesser uses of bennies is to spend them to "gently guide" the story in a particular direction. Happy to do so if needs be......

OOC:
No need for that. It was more my character wondering. I as a player am fine with a one way trip. It is till possible the portals function both ways but that the one that goes from here to there might be located back in central park or something like that. Shawn is a bit more anxious about possible routes home now that the concequences of a rash decisioin in the moment are facing him.

I think we should start ruffling feathers. In the ensuing chaos some answers might emerge........
This is a terrific opportunity for adventure..........

Let's try to keep out of character discussions out of the main gaming thread? To keep things from getting confusing.

"I don't know why," McKinely says, looking at Summer, "But you look vaguely familiar. Like you remind me of someone, but I can't quite place who."

He, do you have internet access here? Do you mind if I look some stuff up? I want to check on a couple of friends
If allowed then Shawn will pull up world headlines and throw those to a side window for the others to look as while he looks up some friends from work, checking out the company itself in the process and a couple from his college days. If Facebook comes up then he will check his friends status to see if a "ShippingAndRecieving" his public alias is listed as a friend.
I wonder if I exist here and if so is he still around or did he also go through a ports?
Jan 15, 2023 3:46 am
"Internet? Sure, help yourself."

A version of you does seem to exist here. You can pull up several headlines that seem to be correct in context. Whether your double is still here or not is open for debate.

Shawn will look up the dinosaur preserves and try to get background information on how dinosaurs came back. He also checks for when this started. He also makes note of any terms, words, or technologies that are foreign to him. Know what the differences are could let us blend in better.
I wonder if the worlds are divergent timelines or just parallel realities?
He finishes up with a quick search on disappearances or unusual (for New York) events around central park
Does anyone else have anything they need to look up?

The dinosaurs were brought back about 35 years ago, through technology researched by Dr. Philip Richards, a microbiologist, and researcher at Berkley. It was Dr. Richards who took a sample of dinosaur DNA from a well-preserved fossil and mapped the genome that enabled him to resurrect the species. Once the first was achieved, the DNA was altered to grow new ones, using monitor lizards and crocodiles as the hosts. Botanists were able to use similar techniques to resurrect long-extinct plants.

Nothing unusual comes up about New York or Central Park. No disappearances of note or mass events.

Interestingly, however, Dr. Richard's work is currently being improved upon to alter children at the genetic level while still in the womb. The science is still rudimentary, but a successful chimera (a girl with cat ears and a tail) has already been born in China. The fear is that this could lead to a race of "superbeings" genetically engineered to be stronger, faster, and more resilient than ordinary humans. Most countries in the UN have outlawed genetic manipulation, but some are actively researching it. In the words of Dr. Richards himself, "The genie is out of the bottle, and I wish to God that I could imprison it again."

Superbeings?... John looks down at his busted leg, wondering if this might be the reason for his entering this world. if they're so good at genetic engineering, maybe they can heal my leg, and I can race again.. A single tear rolls down his face at the thought of getting to sit behind the wheel of his beloved F1, and be made whole again.

Almost giddily, to McKinley "How advanced is your medicine here? Specifically, can it heal my leg?". He barely holds back his real question, can I race again?!
Jan 15, 2023 6:30 am
"Our medicine? Well, I'd have to say that it's as good as it gets. The docs at Cedars-Sinai are among the best in the country, Say, you folks really aren't from around here, are you?" he asks, realization finally dawning.

"You have dinosaurs," Wesley points out. "I was serious when I said we didn't. The closest we had was a series of movies where they brought them back."

Turning to Shawn, he says, "Go to IMDB and search for the Jurassic Park movie. See if it exists in a world where they actually did that." Meanwhile, Wes will dig through his saved pictures until he finds a screenshot from the IMDB page for the 1993 movie. "I used to watch 'em with my dad. The original was one of his favorite films. I have the screenshot from a 'post one of your favorite childhood memories' thread."
Jan 15, 2023 2:07 pm
Keeping the windows split he throws IMDB onto one and checks for any medical applications of genre therapy, nano tech, or cybernetics on mature individuals.
Jan 15, 2023 4:49 pm
There is no mention of the Jurassic Park series of movies or books. Michael Crichton apparently made his living writing historical fiction. There is no mention of cybertech or nanotech, but gene therapy has been performed successfully, though it is cripplingly expensive.

Shawn pulls up a map of the areaon half the screen
The other half is used to continue researching. Space exploration, the Moon and Mars colonization projects. The back to current local, national, and global news. Compare to what was happening in our world and anything else that stands out.
After they he will get up from the computer. Thanks he says to McKinley

A brief Internet search reveals that almost everything else is as it should be. However, one thing of note is the disappearance of a celebrity about three months ago. This wouldn't be notable, save for the fact that the celebrity is one Summer Beach! The picture of the star is identical to the Summer that stands among you.
Jan 15, 2023 11:45 pm
"Oh shit... it's a magical exchange program!" Wes begins to laugh as he looks at the screen and back. "Sorry, sorry... but if she disappeared about three months ago and we just took the portal today... it's more questions without answers."
Jan 16, 2023 4:13 pm
So what's next? I'll admit I was expecting something a bit more exotic when I stepped through that portal. Now that we're here I'm a bit stumped. I mean I don't want my family to worry but . . .
Hey McKinley, what's your prone number?
Shawn checks his phone for service again. If it has service try and call McKinley. He also tries a couple of his contacts.
Shawn explains his thinking. We only tried one phone call earlier and may have quit to easily. If we were getting signal through what was left of the portal then maybe we can call home to at least tell them we might be a bit late
If there is no signal he suggests/asks if they can go back to where they arrived to test the theory

I'm back, thank you for your understanding.
Shawn tries McKinley and is connected. Finding that the phone works, he tries one of his buddies. A voice on the other end answers. "Yo! What's up?"
Jan 30, 2023 3:19 am
Chuckling ironically Yo. Sorry man. I've had a weird day and miss dialed. Anyway good it going? he will try to play it off and get a bit of information while revealing as little as possible. After inks a minute or so he will make something up and say bye before hanging up.

To the rest Well we're definitely here and my life at least is pretty close the this worlds version.

That verified Shawn makes sure all l location sharing and data sync is Thorne off then powers of his phone, pondering the next step
