Questions about the rules

I'll keep this thread to discuss the rules so it doesn't get lost in other OOC chatter

Plz explain Weariness and items
Jan 1, 2023 2:13 pm
Weariness for items is sort of how long they can last. Itā€™s easier if you think about armour. If you fail a combat roll, your basic options are to increase your fatigue (Push harder) or lose your weapon/armour (Hard success). This could be a problem for long dungeons because armour should protect you more than once, that means it should take a few fails to break it. Item "weariness" is basically how worn it is and how many times it can still be used. Then you can generalise this idea to other things like thiefā€™s tools and a magic wand.

For characters is basically how tired they are. It works as a mix of D&D exhaustion and HP where the more tired a character is the more likely it is for them to get wounded. Itā€™s a buffer between failing and getting winded since wounds make you dangerous weaker with the cumulative penalties to rolls.

Ok so instead of the item being completely broken, as a save you could say something like

the axe hits my shield causing it to split down the middle, then later cleaving it through leaving it useless except as kindling for the fire..

But they would both count as a break for the save purpose

Yeah so in that example it takes two hits (split then cleave) before it become non functional. But even after it breaks, you can always try to repair an item (thereā€™s two dwarves!) as well during a rest or pay for someone to do. This means that narratively, you donā€™t have to throw it away

I did a quick read of the rules, and one thing immediately popped up in my mind: for a more complex fight, you could assign specific sub-goals (or let the players define sub-goals), for example King Kong can only be killed after three limbs taken out, or one limb and a head-strike. The head-strike is harder or automatically injures the attacker, or makes it a risky choice in some other way.

Oh yeah! That a good point šŸ‘ Thereā€™s one battle at the beginning that is sort of like that in the D&D module itself. Maybe it can be expanded.

Did you explain what counts as a crit? I don't seem to see it in the rules.

ah right! It's hidden on the character sheet thread, because it is associated with your default ability to raise stakes: You can "raise" (re-roll) any roll once. By doing so, you can rescue a failed action (near miss) or increase it's impact (critical), but you risk increasing your fatigue if you fail.

Basically, re-roll the 2d6 and if you get two consecutive successes, its a critical success. If you fail, you gain 1 point of fatigue.

So for rolling doubles there is it the individual number rolled (3) or the combination (6) that needs to be higher than my level? Also, does this still gain an experience or does that only happen if I don't level the skill?
Jan 19, 2023 12:09 pm
The individual number (3) has to be higher. As for experience, the way I read it
Quote:
If the value shown is higher than your skill level you immediately level up the trait. Otherwise, you gain 1 experience.
you don't get the EXP if you level up your trait.

well, I guess level up is sort of permanent experience I guess šŸ¤£ Just as a reminder, experiences in this game are basically situational bonuses you can get, like a D&D inspiration-type thing
Apr 2, 2023 11:41 am
Can bonuses cause you to exceed your threshold and fail a roll? For instance, we just rolled strength to scale the side of a ship with a +1 from using grappling hooks. My success range is 5-9 and I rolled an 8. That gives me a 9 total and I'm safe. If I had rolled a 9 would that bump me one higher and I fail?

Or does a bonus add +1 to the range not the roll? That thought occurred to me as I was typing out the question above.

The bonus adds to the range, not the roll, yes
Apr 2, 2023 8:02 pm
Ahah yeah as bowl said. The dice result is never modified in this game, only the range šŸ‘ another little difference from the other games (it takes a while to get oneā€™s head around this one šŸ˜)
