Welcome everyone and thanks for your interest in this play test!

I have written down the rules for this system here so have a look around and let me know what needs some clarification!

In the mean time, you can start thinking about your character concepts as we slowly go through the character sheets. A sentence or two is enough to start since the game suggests rolling some secrets for each character.

A few things before we start ...

1. So the Rime of the Frostmaiden is advertised as an horror game. The idea is that the characters find themselves in an hopeless situation and you play their fears and paranoias. Though, being originally D&D5e, this is basically down to the players since you're the heros xD I don't think it has anything particularly bad that can trigger anyone, but I can keep the gory stuff to a minimum if I notice anything.

2. Being an "horror game" we can make it dark and gritty, but we can also be a bit more relaxed and have some fun cinema-like heroics. Yes, maybe the yeti is covered in blood from slaughtering a village, but when its claw lands next to you, you can still climb its arm and run up the gigantic creature to chop its head off with a dramatic spin. Given that you have some freedom to narrate how these things go, we probably should set the tone from the start.

3. I was thinking about running the game as episodes, so "down-time" will be skipped as a quick flashback summary at the start of the episodes. We can run the game as a regular D&D game, but given how long the adventure is for PbP, should we focus on the action?

4. I'm going to use private messages, so you can't be sure what you read is the same as the other players. The idea is to stimulate RPing the communication (or suspicion) between characters instead of the usual assuming "I told them".This is something GP allows us to do but we can have it all in the open if you prefer.
Dec 27, 2022 5:28 pm
Thanks for the invite! In response to your questions:

1). I am okay with horror elements. I would prefer to have more general descriptions than visceral ones but I by no means need everything censored.

2). I am comfortable with dark and gritty too. I have not played a campaign exclusively with that tone yet but I'm happy to give it a go. My preference here would be to have the ability to have the freedom for lighter moments but an overall more serious and somber tone. I am flexible though.

3). My favorite parts of roleplay are the small moments so I would love to see those fostered. I am okay with episodic, though my preference is to include more than just the "action" elements.

4). I love the idea of the private message. In my mind this allows for even better roleplay! I'm not sure what you mean by the examples that you gave though. I'm assuming we would be using notes between particular people to pass along this information. Please let me know if I've misunderstood.

Also, should we begin with our character concepts here in this thread?

Character concept
As stated in recruitment,
Dwarven Ɯbermensch or ƜberZwerg? a Jack of all trades / McGuyver like character knows a little about most things and a lot about a few. Very much into doing things for himself. Abilities would be a couple of cantrips, maybe a few spells, any weapon, any armor, any craft. Not everything will be perfect, might break after 1 use but it'll probably work at least once, well.... maybe šŸ«£ kind of I've seen it done and I understand the concept so I will try it till I get it right.
Dec 28, 2022 1:13 am
Character Concept:

Dwarven Skywatcher - Born in the belly of earth, in love with the heavens above. I'm envisioning an outcast of sorts who watches the moon, stars, and, most interestingly, the auroras of the Great North. He'd be skilled in wilderness survival and magic as a literal hedge mage. He would probably be a somewhat reliable navigator as well as he studies the stars so closely.
Dec 28, 2022 3:15 am
1. Horror elements sound great to me. I enjoy vivid descriptions even if they're unpleasant, so no worries on my account. Of course, I'm happy to tone it down based on what everyone's comfortable with.

2. My preference would be to lean hard into the dark and gritty. A hard winter is coming, there's not enough supplies to go around, the travel routes are impassable and desperation is starting to sink in. I like fights to be dangerous and hard-won - nothing is unfair, take every advantage you can get and so on.

3. I'd like to check, do you mean things like recovering from wounds, purchasing goods, crafting tools and the like? In that case, skimming past them in favour of survival and exploration sounds great.

4. Private messages are unusual, but I'm down to try it out. Sounds very interesting! Though I'm not quite sure what you mean by this part:
Quote:
Tell the others the color of this text.
Dec 28, 2022 6:46 pm
1. Ok so it looks like horror elements are ok, but maybe a bit more general overall descriptions than exercise details, which I think is more or less what one can expect from a D&D adventure.

2. I think the best way to go is probably for me to be serious and point out how desperate the situation is getting, while letting you start any lighter banter when you'd like.

3. Episodes is ok, but I'm getting the sense of avoiding simple "dungeon crawls". So skipping routine things is fine, but we should preferentially keep the roleplay potential
.
Quote:
Tell the others the color of this text.
4. Private messages is exactly this. Everything working, only testlum and meseszovo see this random message in different colors and it just looks like regular text. The difference compared to a note (below) is that no one can tell it's there, so you can't be sure the others players are reading the same text you are.

Whoa! I definitely saw that text earlier but now it's gone. I had no idea the private message function existed.
Dec 28, 2022 7:01 pm
So, meseszovo hasn't accepted the invitation yet, but his profile says he didn't log in for 2 days. Probably busy these days and didn't see it yet :D

So far we have two dwarves, one jack of all trades and one hedge wizard. Any idea you'd like to run with @testlum?

@RAAMtentacles, I'm getting the feeling of a ranger/druid hermit type. Could either fit a scholar reading and studying the skies and stars or a faithful or acolyte of some sky, nature or maybe beauty deity. Any preference here?

@Eyes this looks like you probably want to spread your skill level and keep them around level 3 at the start. Sort of does everything ok, but nothing really good. To me, this sounds like someone who had to improvise a lot, probably because it had to struggle to make it most time, maybe an urchin, criminal or a spy sort of character? It could also be the average Joe who just got caught up in something bad. Though the ƜberZwerg idea could also suggest some sort of elite special chosen one, though I'm guessing something like that shouldn't break with the first use :D

RAAMtentacles says:

ahah yes, I needed the players to be invited for it to work and you joined before I could edit the post :D

I thought private was a secret secret note but it works more like a note hidden in regular text. This means I can say "you see a spider on the ceiling" just to one player and they don't even notice it was just for them!

Perhaps a combination of some kind. I don't think my character is an acolyte but I do like the idea of him being inspired by beauty. Especially in such a dark and terrible place as the Icewind Dale. I also don't feel strongly that he's a traditional academic type as a scholar would be. He has learned more from experience and knows much about how the way things actually work, even if he doesn't know what their name might be in a book.

Customising races and classes should be ok. I canā€™t promise they are balanced as they are though I tried šŸ˜…

Both me and bowl can help with that as we have a bit of experience with the system.
Eyes says:

On the rules sub-threat, thereā€™s a thread about the character sheet that hopeful what things mean. You can quote the first post and copy it into a custom sheet to make a character.

Thereā€™s a lot of formulas there so it looks complicated but it should print something easier šŸ˜

Okay, so I think I've settled into the scholar job for mechanical purposes. I've sorted out my plusses to skills as well. Arcana and Magic are my trained skills. Maybe I was some sort of magical advisor before leaving / being exiled from the clan and finding the sky's light.

@Eyes Quick look at the sheet and it looks ok. To keep somewhat within the lore, Iā€™d suggest you could be from a dwarves clan in the crags as some primordial made the volcano erupt and destroyed a lot of things around. That would have made life more difficult than it was before. I thing the secrets and background are similar to some of the suggested ones so Iā€™ll probably tailor them a bit

@RAAMtentacles yeah I was thinking the scholar things mostly as reading about the sky and such doesnā€™t have to be a true wizard. Your suggestion is good, I wasnā€™t considering having players as natives of Icewind Dale but that can work well. Let me have a look at all the adventures and their suggestions. In terms of deities, besides nature ones like Silvanus and the moon goddess Selune, thereā€™s the lesser known Sune, goddess beauty and love. Of course most people would be polytheist, so it could be a mixture of all of them, but maybe you were inspired by her teachings and now search for the worldā€™s beauty such as the northern lights?
Dec 29, 2022 3:42 pm
If you guys are open to party conflict, I can use the Dnd faction as player secrets. You will secretly hate each other and probably wish the others would die, but times are though and everyone just wants to survive, so thereā€™s that shared goal worth putting differences aside and work together.
Dec 29, 2022 4:29 pm
How about Sehanine Moonbow? Wild to be a elven goddess but we could go for a whole Gimli-Galadriel vibe.

Alright, I've come up with a concept for an orc. She's a witch-doctor or shaman with the appropriate skills. With that in mind, would you allow her to start off as a native of the Dale? She could have joined the party not long after they reach the area, rather than having traveled from Luskan.
Dec 30, 2022 1:30 am
What a fun idea!
Dec 30, 2022 2:01 pm
So it looks like meseszovo is not accepting the invitation to the game, which leave us with 3 PCs. Iā€™ll suggest 3 secrets from the adventure for each so you are even more connected to Icewind Dale. Thereā€™s plenty of them!

Just to clarify. Iā€™ll be running the Legacy of the Crystal Shard, A Plague of the Ancients and The Time of the Frosmaiden sparkled with a few extras here and there. If you spot something that is not making sense let me know as I probably messed up mixing these adventure šŸ˜†
Dec 30, 2022 2:27 pm
Hmm, I'm not familiar with any of those, so it should be fun exploring what they have to offer.

I took the liberty of adjusting the character sheet to my liking, but otherwise my character should be good to go! Let me know if you catch anything wonky, @CESN!

How are we going about magic and equipment?
Dec 30, 2022 8:06 pm
No need to check the story as the legacy of the crystal shard adventure isā€¦ well, the legacy of that šŸ˜… Iā€™m ok with any time in the wild or elsewhere and we can sort that as needed during the adventure as well.
Equipment ā€¦ I forgot those rules šŸ˜… you can start with anything basic a caravan guard may have and maybe something suitable to your character, like a healers and herbal kit. Food is provided by your employer as well.
Wealth is 0 unless you have a good reason to have more than poverty as starting adventurers šŸ¤£ because we can skip shopping and you may forget a few things, this system generally allows you to buy things in retrospective by rolling wealth. This just makes it easier to prepare for adventures. If it makes sense, you can try to buy it and say you had it before you left.
In terms of magic, you have something like cantrips or abilities (like rage) you can always cast. Since itā€™s only 3 players, you can pick 4 magical effects (or combat abilities) you then can use narratively. This is so you can spread more utility spells between you if you need.

Iā€™m thinking of having scrolls and spell books as a way to level up magic. So you actually need to learn them old school because they are very complex to memorise. Copy from a book to a scrolls which is enhanced to automatically cast it. Basically scrolls = spell slots
Dec 30, 2022 8:14 pm
I'm thinking radiant/light effects and cold effects. Any suggestions or recommendations for the others?

Probably something Druidic for flavour like fairly fire (though that could be light), grow plants (entangle) or some animal thing like talk with them. Thereā€™s moonbeam of you want to focus the light flavour. Good utility spells could be detect/dispel magic as well

So are we going with specific spells or like a spell archetype that includes a progression of multiple spells?

For example, I was considering the radiant/light type to include things that did something with a source of radiant energy/light. Maybe Sacred Flame as the Cantrip level, Moonbeam at 2nd, and fill in the rest. Cold and the other two aspects would work the same way. Not necessarily that I would immediately have access to all of those spells but that I would progress into them or tap into them if I pushed things.

Honestly I just made up some stuff that fit my character. Spell progression doesn't seem like it's a thing.
Dec 31, 2022 11:41 am
Yeah we tried spell progression at some point but it gets complicated and the point is to simplify so I opted by allowing you to narrate the spells as you like and boost their powers by making it harder to cast (easier for elves), the focus being on the underlying magical effect itself

The issue is that because you solve things with one or two rolls, thereā€™s not much difference between sacred flame and moonbeam, except the light source I guess.

Since the game will be long, we can try progression if you guys would like to šŸ˜ The best option we got is to have character experience counting to learn new things or add new effects. Maybe you can produce light at first and then you learn to add effects to it, like infuse with divine energy to make a sacred flame or manipulate the natural light for a moonbeam. Youā€™ll need to level down (there are only 6 levels so this balances long term) the magic skill as you struggle to get a grasp of the new effects at first

On the topic of magic, I prefer to have a more freeform and simple mechanic like what we have now. So taking Agna's Commune With Dead ability which lets her speak to dead spirits as an example, maybe she could Raise Roll in order to compel the spirits to speak even if unwilling.

I agree, no need to overcomplicate things, I'm happy with the current system and don't necessarily need to have the progression system.

On the other hand, I still don't think I fully grasp what I'm choosing as the magical underlying effect. I promise I'm not trying to be difficult! My head is just having a hard time wrapping around the concept.

What is the constant that we're choosing here? Like what is the base for the spell that then gets modified with the narrative freedom?
Dec 31, 2022 1:58 pm
Another way to approach it, which could be easier is to pick 4 signature spells first and then try to deconstruct them, if you want.

Okay, so something like this?

Moonbeam: Breaks down into basic component of some sort of heavenly light striking down from above.
Divination: Reading the stars and celestial bodies for omens about the future.
Speak with Animals: A magically influenced ability to communicate with creatures. I would like to see this expand to other creature types as well.
Dispel Magic: Ridding something, someone, or somewhere of magical effects. A dis-enchanter of sorts.

Sounds good, moonbeam probably wonā€™t work on new moons and divination needs clear skies. Speak with animals could be raised to animal friendship like dispel magic could give you some sensitivity to magic (detect magic).

Do all items have a weariness counter? Agna won't be carrying much, just a walking stick and her healer's kit.
Dec 31, 2022 5:41 pm
Technically yes, but single use stuff like potions and such donā€™t really need one since they "break" immediately. Letā€™s have others things like weapons and kits be regular quality equipment with 2 weariness and see how that goes.

So, I made items get 2 boxes but single use multi items, I put one box per, so 10 stones = 10 boxes.
on a 50 ft rope i made 5 boxes so after 5 its 40' after 5 it's 30' and I'll just change the number each time

Thoughts
Jan 2, 2023 12:22 pm
Items could have a _s field to set the number. It's probably easier than adding boxes if you end up with more than 10 :D

I'm reviewing the sheets and making then uniform (had to put the skill box back to what it was testlum, because the roll resolution code needs the big title xD) so I can sort that out. It's going to take a bit more than I wanted since I'm only going to get my laptop back next week (or at least a proper computer to work with).

In the mean time, I think some characters are missing a picture :D
