I gave the scene a bit of context, but I left room for you guys to add more details if you want. Feel free to build upon each others posts and add to the description of the area and the NPCs

I stop and watch this orc. It's a tough lesson to be learned but it's better to learn it sooner than later. I'll ready a spell in case this gets out of hand, I don't want him taking any more than a light beating.

The hustle and bustle of any city has never felt like home to Izuhn, especially not here in Luskan. Looking out over the vast glassy expanse of sea though, it does stir just a tad bit of nostalgia in the back of his mind. He pauses and ponders on the rising black smoke. When he finally speaks, his common is tinged with an accent, making certain sounds harder and more drawn out that usual. "An ominous sign, no doubt. Even if only for those who are nearby the flame."

Izuhn throws his head back to look at the sky, taking it in for a moment before letting out a sigh. "If the Luskar Deliverers don't toss me before we get there then aye. I'll see the crate to Dunavan's."

Turning to extend his hand in offer of a deal, he spots the scene unfolding nearby. "Hold that thought," he says holding his index finger in a gesture of pause. He then begins moving towards the orc and this, keeping enough distance to react should they turn on him. "Hold there! What seems to be the problem here?"

Agna stands stock still at the beggar's provocation. Her yellow eyes level with the wretch. She raises her wooden staff, a sturdy pole nearly half again her full height and slams its butt on the cobbled path. "I do not think it is wise for you to chance losing any more teeth, stranger. Go bother someone else."

The flicker of movement at the corner of Agna's vision makes her turn. Her attention drops from the quaking beggar to focus on whatever assailant had snuck up to her. The shaft of her pole swings out by as much instinct as directed force to crack the tattooed arm.
OOC:
Do I need to roll Reaction? Or is it Melee?

OOC:
Good question. As usual, it sort of depends on how you approach it. I think you're sort of trying to avoid so it's more of a Reaction roll where, if you can get a critical, you do it so well you manage to strike back. (Also, because this is a D&D adventure, melee will probably be overused anyway 😆)

As a side note, this also of goes into what meseszovo suggested: trying to make fight more engaging by having "sub-goals" - first you dodge, then you strike back.

OOC:
That's a success with no setbacks! Feel free to describe how that looks!
Jan 9, 2023 1:23 pm
With her assailant's tackle going wide, Agna pivots her staff around and swings. She takes aim at an exposed part - an arm, a shoulder, a shin - looking to disable the scoundrel with a minimum of fuss.

Rolls

Melee - lv3, SR: 5-8 (f0-c0) - (2d6)

(61) = 7

Watching this encounter change from a simple robbing to an actual life threatening battle. Fizel, working his hands into a complicated gesture fires an arc of pure blue energy into the knife weilding man.

OOC:
not sure whether to roll to hit, just damage, or both; and if it'sdamage, how much? Is it a killing spell?

So eyes failed the roll but leveled up the magic skill to lv4 because that's a double above your current level. Everyone else succeeded. Remember that, since you know the results immediately after you roll, you can actually narrate what happens as a result of your action

As notices the arm moving to grab her, she instinctively swings out of the way using her wooden staff. "Whaaa-eere?" Seeing suddenly facing him, the human tries to throw a punch with the other hand. Almost loosing his balance on his own, easily knocks him unconscious.

With the robbery turning violentlighting which strikes at the feet of the remaining thug, forcing him to drop the dagger in panic. Still confused the human looks at and starts to slurredly beg "Plee-don... I run I go-ouh" before being tackled to the ground, leaving him motionless but still mumbling incomprehensibly.

OOC:
"No damage" in this game as it focus on the narrative like the games Powered by the Apocalypse. Following the "fail forward" concepts, the roll is to determine if you can do what you want as intended, without any backlash or unintended consequences. In this case, I had you fail to hit (the intention) but still made the thug give up (win).

In terms of killing, I'll assume it is not deadly unless otherwise stated or it makes narrative sense (decapitating someone still kills them xD).

Catching her breath, Agna approaches the pinned down man. She flicks the dagger out of his clutches and into the running water beneath the bridge. At the beggar's pleas, she snorts. "Leave the wretches be. I don't think they'll trouble anyone for some time now. But thank you two for coming to my aid. I am Agna."
OOC:
Not rolling as I assume the guy is helpless underneath Izuhn?
Jan 10, 2023 12:13 am
Izuhn takes a look down at the man that he's pinned to the ground, giving him a long stare that says not to try anything funny before allowing him loose and giving him a boot to the rear for extra incentive to scamper off.

Watching the man leave, Izuhn spits in his direction. "Nothing but a thug and probably a thief at that. Nothing worse than a thief." Izuhn dusts himself off and then offers a hand towards Agna. "Name's Izuhn, I'm a trader around these parts, but not from this city."

Irritated that the spell missed and walking toward the fray. Hello, young one. I am Fizel of Halruua. I tried to help but somehow my eyesight failed me.
Jan 10, 2023 12:54 am
Agna nods at their joint introductions and clasps the offered hand. "Do you two men know where I might find the Luskar Deliverers? I've some business with the company, and the sooner I find them the better."

"It's interesting that you mention them" Izuhn says, stroking his beard. "My acquaintance over there, he gestures towards a human woman on the nearby bridge, is sending that company on a delivery to the Ten Towns in the Icewind Dale. I'll be accompanying them, so perhaps we could go and find them together. Never hurts to stick together around here. Just in case there's anymore of those type around."

Looking Izuhn in the eyes and speaking plainly, Well then, it looks like we are heading the same direction. I was hoping to earn a coin or two as a temporary caravaner. Izuhn, would you mind introducing me to this lady? I am Fizel, just come from Gauntlgrym hauling supplies and looking to get to 10 towns before the weather closes the passes. I can do most any job from fixing busted gear to cooking a hearty hot meal, and I'm willing to earn my way.
Jan 10, 2023 7:51 am
Agna grunts. "I've no objection to company if we're bound for the same place, and you two seem to know how to handle yourselves." She turns to Izuhn. "Let's go talk to this woman of yours."
