I don't know what system discworld is, but it would work so well with Risus
Jan 9, 2023 4:44 pm
or ATRIM! ... or, perhaps, One in a Million.
Jan 9, 2023 4:52 pm
not heard of any of them.... and i thought i knew a bit about RPGs :-O
Jan 9, 2023 7:41 pm
I once had a diskworld GURPS book. I don't know where it is now :(

I've never played this, but someone's put a lot of work into this free Discworld rpg.

I love the books. Didn't know there was a game. I want to be the sapient pearwood coat rack.
Jan 10, 2023 11:52 am
have actually read most of that gurps book. a friend of mine has it. from what i can remember of the book, it is inferior to this guy's efforts.....

so to answer my question, it does not look like any1 here on GP is playing/running this..... shame :-(
Jan 10, 2023 12:14 pm
I remember it was very hard to get the right tone or humor

You can always be the first!
But I can imagine the tone being difficult, like Rune says
Jan 10, 2023 1:10 pm
If you want the game to capture the humor of the books I would think it would all be about the players in the game and how it is run. Not for serious gamers.
@Morlaf if you plan to run a game I would be interested.

And you would have to define what kind of diskworld tone you are aiming for. The first few books was very random, but later Sir Terry settled down a bit.
Jan 10, 2023 1:25 pm
I'd think that limiting it to Ankh Morpork might be by far the easier choice rather than sprawling all over the place.
Jan 10, 2023 1:26 pm
"Fire roared through the bifurcated city of Ankh-Morpork."
is an amazing plot hook.....
;-)

Usu my players make it partway through session 1 before burning down the house, it would be interesting to start with that

hhahaahah that was terrific dude!!

Apparently Terry used to play DnD. I recon he was a total nightmare player :-D

I was joking, I don't recall my players ever setting a city on fire. ... o.t.o.h. ... I once was a player in a Ravenlofty game that wound up in a city of vampires ... and decided to "Cleanse the City".

he explains you need 2d10 dice a d4 and a d6. what? no d8 dice in a discworld game? i think he may have missed a trick there.
time to create a d8-based game

IIRC, the 8th color (at least in the first book) is often thought of as unlucky for those who see it. And the sender of * is not to be named.
Jan 13, 2023 10:05 pm
Isn't the 8th color the color of magic?
Then again every wizard is personally collected by Death

Surely it should use a D1,000,000.

I loved those books so much. Sir Terry's wit and humanity dripped, oozed, and exuded from pretty much all of his characters.
Jan 14, 2023 8:55 am
The d8 is hidden from mere mortals --as it should be. They are used in the Cost of Magic system in the optional Rules of Casting Spells.

Hi! I started noting an influx of new downloads of my game, and I found this thread, thank you all for checking it out! Hope you like it!

I just got very very curious about what you see as possible improvements to "the creation of belief" rules, in what way are they perceived as incoherent, etc.

The rest is purely subjective --and the difficulty in mimicking a Pratchettian tone is not insignificant-- so all I can really point out is that the optional rules are sorta hard to find, after you restructured the page to get 'rid of the clutter' all the references to the optional rules still take us back to the main game's download page, but those downloads are not there anymore. I only found them due to my habit of --after liking a game-- opening the links to 'view all by' and 'related games' and found them there. It is not immediately obvious that The Creation of Belief is related to One in a Million (small dark text), or that it is the 'Optional Magic Rules' spoken about in the main game's page. Things are called by different names in different places.

It is not a big deal (hence 'tad':) and I have not played this game, nor fully read it, but I am not confident of my ability to bring it to the table. But then, I am not sure any ruleset could do Pratchett justice. I do applaud the effort.

Thanks! I get it, you mean that the presentation or structure to get the actual rules or to even understand they exist is off. I can see that! I'll do some work soon to clarify and make it more obvious.

As I said let’s start a disc worldish game via Risus.

Gods, imagine the cliches!

Summoning ludicrous chaos magic (4)
In touch with the turtle (3)
Vomit spells and lore (2)

Jan 15, 2023 9:45 pm
i know there is a whole sub forum about board games but this is about discworld so here goes: the missus and I have been playing The Witches, Guards Guards! and Ankh Morpork the board games. they are a lot of fun too!
Jan 15, 2023 11:25 pm
I have been searching for a copy of "Guards! Guards!", I actually have made a supplement/expansion to "The Witches" that I never published anywhere. I like Ankh-Morpork a lot, it is one of those games I use to introduce people to slightly more advanced systems. Because it has the look and feel of complexity but plays really easily, and introduces new players through a good learning curve (IMHO).
Jan 16, 2023 7:53 am
yeah, we originally suffered with Ankh Morport but now a game with 2 ppl takes just a few minutes. I would love to play it with 4 ppl. I'd be very interested in the expansion for The Witches. does it introduces more problems to solve? more Witches that you can play as? more locations with problems?
Jan 16, 2023 3:24 pm
The Witches expansion makes the characters just a bit more, well, characteristic.
I can upload it on my itch.io page. But! I wanna make it more polished before doing that.
Jan 16, 2023 4:05 pm
yeah i found the one witch (Annagrama Hawking, i think) to be a lot more powerful than the rest..... In My Humble Opinion......
Jan 16, 2023 10:25 pm
Ok, so here are the rules and downloads for the expansion: https://jocher-symbolic-systems.itch.io/the-witches-unofficial-adventures

Ok, I’ll make Risus: Discworld but no guarantee I can GM.

Takers? Interest?
Jan 17, 2023 3:55 pm
if you can't GM what are you offering to do? I'd like to play for sure..... and I would GM once i feel up to the task. which i doubt will be 2023.....
Jan 17, 2023 6:10 pm
Duly noted, you right. If you can't host, why offer right?

Moreover, you would need to specify the type of diskworld tone you want to achieve. The first few volumes were quite haphazard, but Sir Terry eventually calmed down.

i would agree if there were hundreds of games going and you wanted to specify. but right now.... I;d play ANY kinda discworld.

I'm open to GMing a PBP game. However, I have never done that before and I feel like maybe I need some kind of introduction or brief on expectations etc.

there are a few guides on this website about this. Basically (and I apologize if you already know this) you narrate the story and we are the protagonists - or at least we feature in it. try and make it super - familiar (e.g. "Fire roared through the bifurcated city of ank-morpork.... and then we see a red wizard galloping on a horse, being chased by a suitcase on 100 legs while gold goings keep jangling on the cobbles.....") and keep it simple. we will create the chaos for you. Or anything else you like......

I'm well versed in GMing, but it is more the switch to a more clear turn-based play loop that I'm not that familiar with, but I will 100% figure it out. So that leaves the question, who wanna play?
Jun 16, 2023 3:35 pm
The kind of diskworld tone you wish to produce would also need to be specified. Sir Terry ultimately calmed down after the first several volumes, which were very haphazard.
