Location: Downtown Archipelago - The Tower
Time: evening

Edmund,

The sun is setting outside the perfectly clean windows of Princy's Tower floor and you're busy with your normal evening duties. Tell us a bit about Princy's household. Is he married? Does he have children? How many other servants does he have at this time?

What are your evening duties, by the way?

Edmund Sterling
"Tha’ could’ve gone betta." I could hear Princy sigh from his lavish chair in the den. From my present angle, I could only see his stygian silhouette framed by the brilliant crimson of the setting sun against the Den’s side wall. He appears to be resting his head in his hands He has been doing that a lot lately. Particularly since his mistress, I believe she went by Robin – though I can’t say we’ve been formally introduced, disappeared. Princy’s wife, Parker, had taken their daughter Paisley for a weeklong visit with her parents in the Chicago area along with Janelle, Parker’s personal attendant. They had contracted with a private seaplane to make this trip, so I can expect their travels will go smoothly and according to plan.

Today we hosted a meeting with several families of relatively high status. Fifteen were invited, and 13 showed. Which meant close to twenty individuals were present, including the 3 representatives that brought bodyguards. Those three belonged to Mr. O’Connor, Ms. Arness, and Mr. Soth. Each of these three families was still working to make a name for themselves and hadn’t quite understood the etiquette of the families of the Towers yet. Simply put, if you have an invitation to a house in the Towers, your safety was being promised by that family. Our reputation for hospitality was Sterling.

Of course, the bodyguards knew this, each face was familiar to me, and each one was eager to let their master be the one to suffer the blow to their perceived reputation. After all, they knew that this would mean several hours of being taken care of by me and my staff without having to worry about getting their hands dirty.

By now all the guests had left, but Princy was speaking with an advisor, Lucius, in hushed tones.

Questions bounced around my mind as I prepared a final drink to bring to Princy and Lucius: Is Princy trying to set up an offensive? Is he on the defensive? Is one of the other big names in the towers making a move? Why did we invite those we did? Why did Mr. Santized (fountaineer) and Ms. Luxxe not attend?

I open a small cooler and removed a couple of leaves of sage I had grown in my private garden to add to the cocktails I was stirring up. Gin, amaro montenegro, and some leftover tea I had brewed earlier this afternoon would make a perfect drink to bring Princy’s long day to an end. I slap the leaves on the corner of the counter before placing the verdant leaves delicately into the two ornate glasses. Let’s see what we can learn.

I begin speaking a couple of paces before entering the recently remodeled den. "Some drinks for you two to enjoy while you discuss. Anything else I can get you?" The view from these new windows is breathtaking, but I immediately shift my gaze to Lucius and Princy to see what I can piece together.

"Yes, Edmund, that'd do nicely." Princy doesn't mention what drink he wants - you know his tastes. As you serve the pair, Princy looks out the windows, "That delivery is coming in soon, Edmund. Please do head down to th' docks an' make sure it's brought up here safe. It's important." His eyes flick over to you for a moment, "An' if any o' the dock folk might know why we were two short tonight o' th' guest list, I'd appreciate knowing." He, of course, is sending you off to ferry some crates from Canary's delivery. But more importantly, he's asked if you can find out exactly why Luxxe and Sanitized didn't bother to show up tonight. He only mentions the dock folk, but you know he'll want you to hunt until you find the reason. Or, you can find the right greedy hand to bribe for intel - he doesn't care about your methods, does he? He trusts they're proper enough.

What do you do?
Jan 25, 2023 6:39 pm
The trip to the Tower’s docks went quickly. Private dinghies with retired sailors were available here to take members of the Towers to various locations around the local Isles. The selection of captains is slim at this time of night. Luckily I lock eyes with one of my preferred ferriman, her weathered smile and icy blue eyes seem to sparkle in the last of the day’s light.

"I know the day is late and the notice is short Ms. Ana, but would you be so kind as to take me to the Fountains?" I extend my hand offering some coin.

Ms. Ana tilts her head to the side, peering at you for a moment. "I'd be glad to do so, Mr. Sterling. But I thought you were receiving Canary shortly? Is someone else meeting her then?"
Jan 25, 2023 11:16 pm
I look at my pocket-watch. Canary should be here any minute, if everything is going as expected. "Certainly, dear! Just want to make sure you don't mind waiting until that exchange has been completed. I'd hate to have you render your services to another in the meanwhile."

My eyes seem to seek the horizon. Shimmers of the dulling sky still flicker across the gentle waves, speckled by ruins of buildings tall enough to protrude from the expansive azure. "Have you heard any good stories lately?" I ask her as she follows my gaze out to sea. I'm hoping for anything to clue me in on matters I would otherwise not hear of, but I'd settle for any fisher's tale.

"Of course, Mr. Sterling," Ms. Ana replies cordially as she smooths a wrinkle on her shirt as if it might bother you. "I'll hold the ferry until you're ready." She gives you a polite smile and a nod before moving to stand by her ferry with its quiet outboard motor, leaving you alone on the dock among the folks loading and unloading a half-dozen barges, boats, and even a yacht.

You spot The Refuge approaching and recognize Canary by her slicker. There's another person on board as well, it seems. Perhaps she's taken on a crew after all.

For Sixth Sense:
Any time during the session, spend 1 of your hold to ask the MC what your sixth sense is telling you. The MC should answer with a warning, an assurance, a clue, or an insight of some kind.

Your master sent you to fetch the cargo, which is a very expensive and rare wine supposed to have mystical qualities. You get the feeling that someone here on this dock knows about this shipment and aim to steal it in transit.
Jan 26, 2023 1:37 pm
Canary,

You pull The Refuge up to the wooden dock and Blue Light hops onto the dock with a line to moor it. You see Mr. Edmund Sterling waiting for you on the dock. He hired you to fetch the cargo for his boss, Princy. He should have your jingle as well.

Edmund,

What do you do when Canary and this new guy arrive?
Jan 26, 2023 3:22 pm
My heart drums inside my chest, the increased bloodflow makes my legs and forearms feel slightly tingly. My eyes dart back and forth trying to see whose attention may be on me or if there are faces I don’t recognize. Surely no one from the tower would openly make a move like this. Maybe Sips? Rafters? Perhaps even local law? My eyes flicker back to Ana and a shiver crawls up my spine, how had she known I was expecting Canary?

It’s okay, I’ve prepared for this situation. I just can’t believe I’m feeling this caught off guard. That's what I get for letting the horizon capture my attention again.

I desperately pray Canary remembers the code. If I greet her with a vowel, we continue with the trade as planned; if I greet her with a consonant, she offloads a fake and I contact her with new drop instructions when I can. Here’s to hoping they wait to jump me until Canary and this other guy split. I’ll have to ask her about him later, assuming this works.

"Greetings my beautiful songbird!" I say loud enough to carry over the gentle troll of the motor, "I hope the currents treated you well!"

I bring the Refuge up under low-throttle, then cut the engine and let her drift up sidelong to the docks. Glad to see Blue Light doing his part and tying us off. I keep the lights low, and don't use the floods. We don't need everyone in the Tower knowing we're here.

Little surprised to see Edmund himself waiting here, this must be important. I stand just outside the cockpit as Edmund calls out to me. Edmund and I have our little code... but although I get it. I have an escort here and it'd be pretty awkward trying to deviate from an actual delivery. But I take Edmunds greeting as the warning it's meant to be and keep a hand near my weapon.

I whistle a little hiss to Blue Light to get his attention, "heads-up." With a little tip of my head to indicate the rifle over his shoulder.

"Edmund, my friend!" I chirp back, "smooth water... this is Blue Light. He... uh... comes with the shipment. I hope you weren't waiting long!"

She responded with a vowel, I think to myself. She wants to finish the job here. Is Blue Light a boon in this situation, or could he be in on it too? I could invite them up, playing it off as part of the delivery - a bonus reward, drinks and rest in comfort. Then at least I'd have some added protection on the way up.

I bow politely to Blue Light. "A pleasure to make your acquaintance."

Turning back to Canary, "Your timeliness leaves nothing to be desired. Just one of the many reasons we continue to work with you."

Think. I can do this. I force myself to take a deep breath, the scent of the water is muddled with notes of gasoline and oil here in the docks. I can do this.

Alright, Edmund, let's meet Dremmer:
https://i.imgur.com/4LKbLOI.png
The docks are protected by Dremmer's gang and he does his best to keep the families of The Tower happy. Guess what? He's the scumbag who's keeping an eye on your ship. Too close an eye. He's the guy who's aiming to lift that cargo, which means guess what? He's probably doing it for another family. He's not big on taking initiative and follows orders well enough to be alive.

Your best opportunity is to make Dremmer an offer that's better than whoever is paying him to take your boss' dren.

What do you do?
Jan 27, 2023 7:53 am
I can sense his hesitation but hard to get a read on it.

"We doin' this?" I ask , it's probably clear that I have concerns at this point.
Jan 28, 2023 6:55 pm
Dremmer. A bead of sweat trickles down my forehead and gets lost in my beard as the realization washes over me. I continue to walk down the dock toward the Refuge as my mind spins. What are my options?

Fight? I don’t know how many of Dremmer’s gang are lurking. He certainly has more potential muscle hiding in the corners than I do. Even if we were to fight our way out of this successfully, what is the next move?

Run? Canary has sung the praises of her ship’s speed, and her skills as a driver are top notch. Would we be able to make a get-away? Where would we go? Besides, involving her to that level would violate the agreements of our contract.

Swap out? That surely won’t work. I’m sure he knows exactly what he’s looking for,

I don’t see myself walking out of here with the bottle. I might be able to offer him a sweeter deal, or at least get some more information out of him.

I have to get Canary out of here safely, or at least try. I believe Canary just mouthed are we doing this? at me.

I clear my throat, my mouth suddenly dry at the threat of Dremmer’s web tightening around me. Speaking loudly enough to be heard, "Just business as usual." I force myself to smile. Soon I’m beside Canary and shift to a whisper, "Dremmer, the head of security here, is going to make a move for the wine soon. I would hate to get you any more involved than you already are. So I’m going to try to get what information I can out of him before I likely end up handing it over." I cautiously look toward the ship trying to spot the parcel Princy is so eager to have. "I’ll try to talk to him for a little while. As far as I’m concerned you can unload as planned, but you’re welcome to go off book. Best case scenario I can buy him out. I’m prepared to lose the cargo, but will do what I can to secure your safety."
Jan 28, 2023 8:37 pm
Edmund's brain is cruising at a hundred knots, and not straight wise at all.

I lean slightly in as Edmund explains and I'm distracted for a second, he smells nice... but I blink it off and concentrate on his words.

In truth, my part of the deal is done the moment the cargo hits the dock. I'll fight to protect it on the water, but this... what is this even? This isn't my problem, truth be told... but Edmund says that bit at the end, about my safety.

Am I in danger here? Is Blue?

"Don't wanna leave you dry, Edmund," I say quietly, "is there another place we can offload on the quiet? Come aboard. Show me."

Maybe there isn't such a place, but if anyone knows the secret ins and outs of the Tower, it would be this guy, right?

Jan 29, 2023 12:38 am
I seethe a little at the man's words. Of course we're trying to get the crates to Princy. I'm just trying to do that without anyone losing any limbs! (Or worse.) Still, his words fire up enough spite in me to confront the issue.

"I'm sorry," I say to Canary in a hushed tone. "I'm out of my element and I'm afraid it has me rather on edge. I'll see if I can talk to him about this. Just stay on your toes."

Best to try to figure out who's behind this and see if we can make a better offer. I steady myself and turn around, heading a ways back toward the dock's shoreside. "Sir Dremmer," I confidently project, "I'd like a word."

I nod urgently. Edmund is walking some kind of line here.

I walk over to Blue Light as Edmund heads up the dock, "looks like the fine gentlemen over there might wanna..." I pause before the next word, "confiscate our delivery." I step back up onto the Refuge, "Edmund's tryin' to smooth things over peaceful-like. It's your cargo... you willin' to stand and fight over this?"

Part of me wants to just unload all this drelk on the docks and hit the horizon, but Blue Light here has proven to be a stand up guy and that's just not my way.
Jan 29, 2023 6:14 pm
OOC:
Let's see if we can get on the same page together!
First off, here's a rough map of the exterior of The Tower and the docks:
https://i.imgur.com/18ZhL8e.png
Notice The Refuge is docked at the main dock to the south and Dremmer is up north - he's watching you all right now.

Edmund, he's been watching you since you arrived He knows you're Princy's man and he knows you've worked with Canary, so he strongly suspects you have the cargo there.

Dremmer's "team" (yes, he calls them a team because it sounds more civilized) is a small gang that numbers about a dozen. They are well-armed (3-harm, 1 armor) and well-heeled (they know how to play nice for the rich folk of The Tower). To this point, Dremmer's team has never done double deals like this, so it's unexpected that Dremmer is throwing away his good name for this cargo.

So what's the cargo?
Four crates of Chateau Cheval Blanc 1947 (Princy told you he suspects these might be the last bottles of this vintage in the world).
The crates look like this, more or less:
https://i.imgur.com/JUH4l12.jpg
An able body can carry a pair of these crates stacked, but they're pretty heavy. Lucky for you - they're well-packed and shouldn't break under normal jostling.

Edmund, your Sixth Sense tells you a couple of things.
1. You could slip out of the main docks on the Refuge, probably take some fire, and GTFO. The turrets on top won't fire on you - this is a Dremmer team conflict only. If you can slip back later into the Vassal Pier where the lower servants and sycophants to the families live, you can easily sneak the cargo back home there.
2. Dremmer's Team may not be 100% on board with throwing away their security gig. Roark, for one, has a mate and kids and wouldn't easily throw their lives away by burning Princy like this. You could seek him out and try to turn him against Dremmer. Risky, but possible.
OOC:
So, with all that info dump, hopefully we're on the same page. If not, ask me in the Discord.
Jan 31, 2023 3:50 am
I do my best to project my voice from here. "I have a hunch there are those here who are conspiring to throw your livelihood away tonight. Surely the family that put you up to this must be paying you enough to retire comfortably? But, I assure you doing honest work here will be better for you. Better for your families! Maybe they have something on you, threatening something or someone you care about. Come to me and I will help you!"

It’s difficult to tell if my voice is carrying at all or if it is entirely being swallowed up by the water splashing against the wharf. I feel like an idiot shouting like this, but this hunch scratching at the back of my mind tells me someone can be swayed. Maybe if I can make them confront each other for a while…

"But if you think you can survive in this world by casting aside propriety, morality, and your dignity - you are and will be dead wrong. It is worth fighting for the right thing. It’s how we will eventually carve our way back out of these flooded streets and drowned dreams. If you wish to resort to coercion and robbery, constantly sleeping with an eye open and wondering when you will be next - go join the Rafters or Sips. Or the Talons if you happen to have a bird name." I mutter at the end.

Let’s hope this works, I think to myself.

"It will take me about 30 minutes to inspect the product, at which point I will be making my way from this dock, back to the lifts. I hope you’ve made up your mind by then."

I turn and walk back to the refuge, hands clasped gently behind my back to mask the shaking the adrenaline has caused me. As I make my way toward Canary I say, "I know it isn’t my place to say, but would you mind preparing to slip out of here? I would like to try to break sight, and slip around to the other side and dock at Vassal Pier to finish this job. Hopefully while they decide whose futures they are want to throw away. Then I’m going to come back here and collect some names. We’ll improvise as needed, and you’ll be compensated for the additional complications. If you’ve another idea, I’m open to it. This manner of tactics was not covered at the Buttle Academy."

As the three of you board The Refuge and start to leave, Dremmer moves forward, down the dock toward you. He starts to call his team to attention, but then Roark moves up to intercept him. It buys you enough time to start up the Refuge and slip away from the docks. Dremmer may still want that cargo, but at least some of his team isn't completely on board.

Blue Light seems on edge about this risk and sudden change, but he is committed to getting the job done. He keeps his rifle at the ready, just in case there's trouble.

If the two of you want to dock at Vassal Pier, you can do that. You'll need to Act Under Fire to do it. You've caused some dissension in Dremmer's team, so you can take a +1 Forward on the roll.

I take Canary’s hand as she helps secure me on board the Refuge. Her hand is surprisingly strong, yet something about it is more gentle than I expected. She does appear much more relaxed than I feel at this moment. I’m grateful for such a composed and unflappable ally.

I about-face, prepared to offer similar assistance to Canary’s companion. However, from the way he slings the final mooring lines away from the dock, and effortlessly bounds on deck leaves me rather slack-jawed. It may be possible that I’ve been neglecting some attention to personal calisthenics.

Feeling less than helpful, I immediately shift my attention back to Canary, but she appears to already be making preparations at her pilothouse. Indeed, I am out of my element.

I look for a place to sit, somewhere out of the specialists’ way, but what isn’t occupied by cargo (or useful people) seems to have some combination of dirt, barnacle, or spume. On second thought I’ll stand - I wrap a kerchief around my hand and grab onto a rail near the helm. "Ms. Canary, if there is anything I can do to help, just say the word."
Feb 1, 2023 8:08 am
The Refuge does sit higher in the water than many of the barges and skiffs of the area, so it can be a bit treacherous coming aboard if you're not used to it. But once aboard, there's a largely flat deck just behind the pilothouse... with a hips-high rail and a machinegun mounting ring in the center... minus machinegun at the moment but it's good to hold onto if one is a little unsteady at sea. It's also where the wine crates are arranged, nearer the stern, and secured by polymer rope.

Edmund can probably find a good place there, good handholds and near enough that we can converse.

There's also a pretty large area belowdecks, accessed by a covered hatch at the rear of the raised deck, about 2/3 of the way to the aft of the boat. There's more storage down there, but it's also where I call home, my personal things, bed... but I often as not sleep in the cockpit anyways.

---

By now I'm in my perch in the pilothouse, which I often just call the cockpit. It's got two seats side-by side, though I often as not stand or just perch on the edge of one or the other. I have a few personal belongings arranged up here as well.

"Aren't you the best," I smile over my shoulder as I maneuver toward the Vassal Pier. "Just handle your people, all right? We're a little... big... to be coming this way."

It actually takes some concentration, though I try not to show it.

"Edmund, is it?" the blond man says as he looks over as you're trying to find a place to sit. "I'm Blue Light, an officer on The Eurydice. It's the big freighter your man Princy hired to bring him the cargo Canary's got." He doesn't move to offer you a hand to shake, but his greeting is courteous enough.
Feb 1, 2023 2:38 pm
As said otherwhere, Canary, you could pilot The Refuge through a spaghetti strainer right now. The chop is smooth and you've got a solid hand on the wheel as you pull her up to the smaller dock at Vassal Pier. Vassal Pier is a bit rougher-looking than the main dock. It's peopled by the servants and minions of the families who aren't lucky enough to get a warm spot in The Tower proper. Some of their shacks sit on long poles that are fastened to The Tower a few floors underwater, while other huts are floating free and lashed to the others like a little brother holding onto something sturdy.

The Pier is far enough away from the main that Dremmer's team hasn't made it over. Together, you can easily carry the cargo into The Tower before they manage to give you trouble.

What do you do?
Feb 2, 2023 12:31 am
Every now and then there's just a groove, and right now, somehow, I'm in it. The Refuge slips right up to the docks with hardly a bump.

"Lemme give you a hand," I offer to the others. I shut off the engines and start locking up the cockpit. It's pretty much an armored box when it's closed up and it's pretty secure. As a general rule, there's someone at any given docks who can watch your boat for you. Probably that's Dremmer at the mains, but here... well, if someone presents themselves I toss them the usual bit of scratch and go to help the others.

Whopper comes up to offer to watch your boat. She's a bit wild off the clock, but reliable enough and folks on Vassal Pier won't frell with her.

Feb 3, 2023 3:26 am
Blue Light picks up a pair of wine crates with the intent to carry them all the way to Princy's hands. Edmund, I'm guessing you lead the way with Canary grabbing at least one if not both. Coming from Vassal Pier, home for servants and lesser associates of the families, means you need either a key or the right eyes (ocular scans). You have at least one of those - right, Edmund?

After walking down a clean and dry hallway with electric lights, you take a service elevator down to enter the throughway to the elevators which will take you up to Princy's floors. The throughway opens into Crystal Court, one of the wonders of the Sunken Age.

https://i.imgur.com/pv2Q5Ih.jpg
Crystal Court, an engineering marvel. In the beforetimes, it was a shopping center and a place for all the people of downtown to gather to eat together, sharing the plenty of pete-sah and cow sandwiches. When the rivers overflowed and the world flooded, the waters covered the entire court and it was submerged, but the windows that once let in sunlight held against the water pressure. Whether by incredible construction or infernal magic, Crystal Court is still dry. Today, the place is still a gathering spot for denizones of The Tower.

The gang that watches over Crystal Court report to Millions. Millions can always be found at The Tower - he's like a casino boss strolling up and down the halls making sure evryone is happy. And everyone is. Only a fool would say otherwise.

Canary, Millions owes you a favor for something or other - what was it again? Why haven't you called in that debt?

Edmund, what beef does Millions have with Princy's family, and by extension - you? What keeps the peace between them?
Feb 4, 2023 1:55 am
Hopefully we can borrow a hand cart at some point along the way, or Edmund can requisition some strong backs, cause these things are heavy! And between us, it's going to be a tretch making it in one trip.

I follow Edmund inside, it's interesting how he seems to know everyone, many by name, and how he just... knows his way. Maybe it's a little like I am with the Refuge, but here there's... just more.

I can't help but look up as I walk into Crystal Court. A little low whistle. I don't get much call to come inside here, and yeah, selfishly, I wanted the chance. I feel a little... unsteady whenever I first enter a dry place like this. It's unsettling how still the ground is.

By now my head is bare, dirty blond hair pulled back in a ponytail secured by a thick rubber band that used to be part of something else.

I wonder where Millions is. There's a party or something going on if rumor holds true. I hope he'll be happy to see me. Couple years ago now, a small freighter went under a couple of miles up the sea road. I kept the Refuge on-site for the better part of a week as Million's people dove for salvage. All the while with a storm whipping up the surf. Looked like guns, maybe... something valuable to go through all the trouble of bringing it all back up from the bottom.

We never settled up for the work... it was a confusing and busy project and we just never had the chance. And I figure the favor in my pocket's worth more come a rainy day.

The way the sound opens up when you move from the tower hallways into the open Crystal Court, is astounding. The urgent echoing of our footfalls in the narrow hallway suddenly become lost in the open space of the Court. The immensity can be dizzying; however, I have to stay on my toes here.

I feel the attention of Millions’s men fall on me. Like a thick cloud blocking out the sun, it’s subtle but undeniable.

Perhaps they all know something I don’t. Something about what should have happened on the docks I wonder? Or maybe I’m just becoming paranoid. Okay, more paranoid. Of course it could also just be that Millions won’t turn down a chance to make things challenging for any member of Princy’s family - which extends, to some extent, to me. It seemed like simple gossip at first, but I’ve heard from other housestaff that Millions made a move on Princy’s wife, Parker, and was rejected. Something he must not be used to.

Still, none of Millions’s men would dare to make a move here. At least that is the lie I tell myself hoping that the rest of our path goes without conflict. There hasn't been open animosity outside of standard politics in years - it would mark the start a whole new era.

Even with all of the uncertainty, there are so many faces in this magnificent structure that I recognize. So many stories we have shared. I greet each one we pass by name, mostly a trick to calm myself. I spot Jasper, an old friend - one of the long-term employees of the Crystal Court, and one of Millions’s men. He is near a cart, and I know that with a nod he would be willing to rush it over and allow us to continue on our path, unburdened.

But in this moment, there are only six hands that I have the capacity to trust, and each one is holding a crate of wine.

We continue at a brisk pace, heading for the Tower lifts.

As the three of you walk across the hallway that opens to the wide space beneath with... trees? And people - clean people - just sitting and eating too much food and drinking clean water like only members of the families can do. The air is filled with pleasant, wordless music. It's surreal when you compare it to the tumult just outside the doors. Canary, you follow Edmund while hauling a heavy craft in your shaking arms. He's leading you to a set of lifts where you spot a pair of guards wearing shades. One of them puts a hand to his ear and looks around the hallway. He sees the three of you.

"Mr. Sterling," the guard says with deference. "Millions would like to talk to you." He pauses when he seems to recognize you, Canary, and says into his hand, "Canary is with him. Yes. Alright." His attention shifts back to the three of you, "Canary, Millions wants to speak with you as well. Would you three please follow me? John, get a cart for them - there's no reason for you to lug those heavy crates all the way up the elevator."

He sounds firm but polite - almost nice? But you notice the holster under his jacket - he's armed. So is his partner, a rough-looking girl that looks like she's a ganger despite the nice clothes trying to hide it.

What do you do?

Relieved to be able top put this thing down... I'm pretty tough, really, but brute strength is not my thing.

They have working comms here, too. I wonder to myself about the electricity... try to follow any exposed wiring... might be solar? I don't hear gennys going... or they might be on the upper floors or something. The guard says my name to Millions, and that gets me to stop speculating and pay attention.

"Yeah, of course... Millions is the man," I smile at Edmund, who looks more than anxious enough for the both of us. These guys don't worry me. Far as I know I'm well on Millions' good side.
Feb 6, 2023 9:54 pm
What is happening this evening!? I eye the two guards and internalize the futility of me making it up to Princy. Of all the fahrbot ways today could go. Most people are happy with a kind word to remind them how important they are, or a good meal to remind them what the world has to offer - and I’m excellent at offering both of those. Even outside the Tower, it must be similar - even if there is nuance regarding the magnitude of kindness and meals. But these last thirty minutes have gone off the zarking rails. Right now, it seems that Princy and Millions just want what is in these crates... and maybe to ruin each other. Part of me wishes they would just deal with each other the way the Rafters or Sips would and just let the rest of us get on with our lives.

I look over at Canary as she is gently shaking the feeling back into her fingers now that she has passed the crates to John. I smile kindly at John, and thank him for relieving us of the load. Looking back at Canary, she seems almost excited to see Mr. Millions. I wish I felt that way. I guess nervous and excited are simply two sides of the same coin - which side of that coin shapes whether you want to run toward, or away from the source of that feeling. Blue Light seems to still be captivated by the Crystal Court. I don’t blame him, after all I still marvel at it as well, or I would if I weren't so distracted.

With a resigned sigh, I admit to myself that options are severely limited. It is likely I will fail at getting these goods to Princy, and if I am to succeed, I’ll likely have to make a deal of some sort. And I hate to imagine what a deal of this magnitude will cost me.

"Thank you for your consideration," I bow to the guard. "Please, after you."

John the guard

John starts leading you to the metal staircase that leads down to the huge tiled floor. John looks over her shoulder as she casually walks down the stairs, "You guys are lucky. Mr. Millions is eating at People Organic. It's the best. Are you hungry? Mr. Millions will offer food and it's best to eat."

She has a brief conversation with her earpiece as you walk across the wide open space. The people stand by trees and sit on giant smooth rocks like they have nothing better to do. They watch you surreptitiously, Canary, you feel very much the outsider here. When you reach the restaurant, John waits outside like she's been asked to wait for you.

People's Organic is clean glass walls and a sleek front counter with metal carafes of various drinks. There are six people standing in here wearing the livery of workers, but only Millions is seated at one of the tables. When you enter, he stands up to greet you.

"There she is! Canary, it's so good to see you!" Millions moves away from his table and walks up to offer you a hand, Canary. "Come, come and sit. Let me offer you some coffee, please." He doesn't address you, Edmund.

What do you do?
Feb 7, 2023 10:44 pm
My body moves as a separate entity from my mind, disconnected, auto-pilot. I simply step to the side of the entrance, hands clasped behind my back, and wait. My calm demeanor on the outside is almost a humorous juxtaposition of the chaos of my mind.

Security was clearly communicating with someone here and it seemed apparent we were each required to be present. I think to myself. Maybe I can piece something together.

I'm going to cash in my last hold to see what my Sixth Sense is telling me.

I can't hide a subtle smile as my expectations are confirmed, but I'm not nearly as boisterous or vocal as Millions. I step up and offer him my hand... cold and calloused as it is... and at the offer of coffee (which I delivered to the tower no doubt) I have more to say. "Coffee would be amazing. Hot as you can make it."

As I move to the seat he offers, I spare a look at Edmund, who seems deep in thought and still concerned... I'm having trouble imagining why. Everything seems fine now. We're here. The delivery is safe. Edmund might see the silent question on my face, 'what's the problem?'
Feb 8, 2023 1:30 am
Edmund,

You watch the security detail as they usher you, Blue Light, and Canary to the little cafe. They're not worried about the cart and crates that Blue Light is mothering. Millions isn't after Princy's dren - he may not even know what it is. And more than that, he wouldn't do it because Canary brought it here and he's much more interested in her.

Millions summons a worker as he gestures for you to take a seat, Canary. He doesn't seem at all concerned with Blue Light and he's ignoring Edmund for the moment. "The lady would like a cafe mocha, piping hot. And ask Rufe to add some whipped cream and chocolate sauce on top. For fun. Are you hungry, dear?" he asks, then as if you answered, he turns to the worker again, "Some grilled salmon for both of us. And see what the other two need." He takes his seat again. "How is The Refuge handling lately? What brings you to The Tower tonight?"

"Hey Edmund," Blue Light whispers as he stands near you, a protective hand over the crates as they sit on the cart. "Do you think we could leave Canary here and deliver these things, then swing back around for her?"
Feb 8, 2023 4:06 am
Everyone seems focused on Canary at the moment, and by everyone, I mean Millions - the others just seem intent on making him as comfortable as possible. Blue Light's whisper tugs my attention back to the moment.

"Indeed, I believe that is a wonderful idea." I whisper back to him. This Blue Light is making quite the positive impression so far. Keeping a level head under changing circumstances, all the while maintaining focus on finishing the job. I'll make sure to let Princy know so we can compensate accordingly and hopefully utilize his services in the future.

I confidently but silently move to usher Blue Light out of the crystalline café. With a shallow dip of my head toward John, I quietly state our intention to her. "This matter was expected upstairs a little while ago. We shall return posthaste."

"You are certainly welcome. Is something the matter?" I smile kindly at her as we begin walking through the court. "Is there a threat to the building, or someone here I should be aware of?"

Edmund,
She shakes her head curtly, "No, everything’s fine," she answers smoothly in a manner that indicates she’s been trained to give assurances like this. "Mr. Millions wants to make sure you arrive safely. That’s all." Millions wants to talk to you specifically, you can tell.
Feb 9, 2023 9:12 am
It starts to feel a little less comfortable as Millions gets more and more carried away. Wiith the kindness, with the coffee.... I don't even know what I'm supposedly getting at this point. Whipped cream?

I'm at a loss for words as he speaks quickly, and with authority, "I... no... just coffee... I didn't mean..." hard to get a word in, and I'm not exactly assertive right out of the gate.

Finally he asks what brings me here, though I thought it was obvious, "delivery." I say simply, while gesturing with a thumb towards the hastily retreating Edmund and Blue Light. "Refuge is fine. Need bullets. Fifty-cal. Maybe a little diesel."

Canary,
Millions nods as you list off your needs. "Fifty cal I can help you with. As for Diesel, I know somebody who'll give you a good price." A worker brings your coffee and puts it on the table. The cup is clean and has a little logo on it for this cafe. "Do you... want a shower? Maybe rest here tonight?"
Feb 9, 2023 9:43 pm
I stare for a few long seconds at the cup and I feel a bit like a mouse staring at a piece of cheese.

I glance up at Millions, then back at the cup. It's no doubt decadent... "well, why waste?" I say, lean forward to take the cup surprisingly gently, perhaps, by my fingertips. I give it a good smell, close my eyes... take a sip.

It's better than I expected, "this is actually really good...." I have to admit.

I force myself to put the cup down and stand. There's an ache in my bones that never leaves. Life at sea.

"I'd appreciate the fifty cal... pay a fair price of course. And happy to talk to your somebody about gas. Yeah. But... what's this all about?" I glance at the cup again. "A real shower would be amazing... sir... to be honest... but I didn't expect... all this... when I came here."

Trying to keep it nice. I'm not accusing or anything, mostly genuinely surprised and... yeah... a little suspicious.

He brushes off your concerns with some idle chatter until two plates of grilled salmon are brought to each of you. It looks incredible and tastes so delicate that your mouth can barely stand it. Your tummy screams at your mouth because it wants you to chew and swallow it faster.

After a few bites, Millions says, "Canary, do you remember my son Dinero? He's about your age.. he was one of the divers that one time." He mentions it casually, but there's a certain weight to that favor you did for him. It's important. You do remember Dinero, a handsome and athletic young man who seemed a bit younger but probably the same age as you chronologically. But his hands were so smooth and his teeth so perfectly straight.

I find myself closing my eyes with each bite... then reminding myself where I am.

"I remember," of course I do, "he did his part. Good man."

He nods slowly, enjoying your simple appraisal. "I don't like mincing words. Canary, I want you to hire him on as your assistant. I know you run The Refuge alone and it's a risk to you. I assume you keep it lean for cost considerations. But let me pitch you this... I pay you to pay him. He works for you, but it's free of charge." He nods like he wants you to simply agree, then he asks, "What do you think?"
Feb 13, 2023 3:58 am
I do keep it lean. Lonely, even... sharing a ship isn't just a job. It's intimate, it's trust.

I hold up my hands defensively, "whoa, whoa... I work alone. I've worked alone..." I hesitate for a moment as what I'm about to say isn't exactly true, "...forever."

I look down at the floor, take a step or two like I'm pacing the deck... in thought... then glance up at him. "pay me to pay him?" Still looking down at the floor, my eyes dart about as I think. Finally I look him in the eyes, "how much we talking about? How much do I pocket?"

"You pocket what you pay him," he answers smoothly, talking like he would to someone about to run away. "I'd get the jingle to you each time you return. Why don't you try it out for a couple of months? It would... you'd be doing me a favor, really. Helping my son get out from under his old man, letting him earn a living. You've got to know that any work he does in The Tower will always be under my shadow. Out there? He could be his own man. And learn a trade from the best I know."
Feb 13, 2023 6:13 am
The taste of delicious food still lingers in my mouth, I run my tongue over my teeth as I think.

Could be worst things... he did work hard, I mean... I think so. I wouldn't say he sucked in front of the holder Millions here. But it might lead to some better jobs for the Tower. I could get used to this.

"So he works for me, yeah?" I cross my arms, now in a serious mode. 'Sir... If we do this, I can't guarantee anyone's safety. The waters are dangerous out there. And... if he doesn't pull his weight, he comes right back here. No questions asked, that's my call." I lower a serious gaze at Millions for a second... I'm out of my comfort zone here, but I gotta lay down some expectations or this is a no-go.

"He works for you," Millions repeats firmly. You mention safety and see a tiny flicker of worry in his eyes, but he tamps it down. "I understand there's danger. I trust you'll tell him what he needs to do. My son will learn the trade, Canary. He'll make us both proud. And yes, you're the captain and he will respect that."
Feb 13, 2023 6:15 pm
I nod along as he talks, pause a moment. If I had to choose, I'd be on my own for good... but the connection here and the advantage to be had by it is hard to deny.

"We got a deal, then!" I extend my hand to shake on it, "won't be easy on 'im, but there's no finer boat on the water."

It should be fun."

I smile and nod as we shake hands. He's got the confidence of a leader, but I have to admit, surprised how he seems to care about his boy. There may be a heart inside this man.

I sit to finish my meal, feeling out of place in my worn khakis and boots, but neverminding. This is delicious.

"I'll be there..." I answer through a bite, "would be best to meet my new mate before settin' sail." But a party? I try not to think about it.

As for sleeping here? That's... well... I try not to think about it.
