The decent of IXI

Jan 25, 2023 2:12 am
The tops of the mountains are now a distant thing and the valleys depths are warm and welcoming. With spring time fading a bit of heat is felt in the west wind that blows through the passes. Birds chirp. Bees buzz, flowers abound throughout.
Circling high above can be seen a lone winged form that gradually drops below the rim of the valley. Several minutes pass an the figure folds her wings and alights atop a high stone formation. Reaching into her pouch she draws forth a crude map and shakes her head the the rough sketch. The map was given to her by a dear friend, Dringle, a dwarven herbalist with litle concept of cartography beyond what rocks and plants to look for. Looking around she nods after spotting a few peaks to the north and another to the east. stowing the map she launches back to the air looking for the next marker.
Acording to the map drawn for her the next way point is over the next pass and then she must find the ravine somewhere along the south east edge. The problem is that the ravine starts in the wooded region. The dwarves just follow the stream to the ravine and then go down the ravine to a small settlement. Dringle suggested Ixi stop at this settlement to collect documentation to allow her to enter the dwarven cities to the south without trouble.
Ixi can
A. Search for the ravine trail and follow that to the settlement
B. Bypass the ravine and just go looking for the settlement
C. Skip the settlement altogether
D. See where the wind takes you

Ixi runs over the map details in her head as she takes flight, and scans the landscape below. Dringle was a great herbalist, but a pretty poor cartographer. The forest itself was easy to spot, but if she followed the directions exactly, she would have to take the forest route by foot; her massive wingspan made forest flight... difficult, to say the least.

She took the time during her flight to mentally map the landscape; it was beautiful, and maybe worth sketching later when she had time. After mulling her options for a bit, she decided that Dringle's map was great for someone on foot, but Ixi had the advantage of flight. So instead of finding the ravine, she opted to just scan for the settlement from the air. Surely a town couldn't be that hard to miss!
OOC:
Taking option B.

Ixi guags th streams and approximates the location of the stream on the map. Knowing the stlment is at least not in this valley and it it reache by the dwarves via the ravine that must (?) cut through the mountains to the next valey she soars high into the sky. After flying for over another hour she finds a likely spot and starts searching.

Soaring high above, Ixi scans the landscape below for a settlement; while she's never SEEN a non-avian town before, surely it couldn't be THAT hard to spot?
OOC:
Apparently, it CAN be!

Thinking back to the stories told by Dringle reminds Ixi that few dwarven settlements are entirely on the surface. As this is a smaller frontier outpost it is likely run by a single clan and may only have a single structure on the surface. However she does know it trades with other communities and had no underground passageways to then so there must be roads. Or at least trails.
Searching for those and based on when the ravine should have started Ixi adjusts her search

Finding a track that leads in the expected general direction but is soon lost in the overgrown forest Ixi continues searching and after 3 hours locates a path leading to a wall built into a large cavern in a cliff face. From there she soon finds this end of the ravine and verifies this is the place.
OOC:
any questions how that worked? You're choices affected the time it took but also the safety and the rolls determine the effectiveness.
The "building" had a single sturdy door but Ixi notes several windows in the cliff face indicating the settlement is bigger than a single door might indicate. A few small fields in the area look cultivated but not enough to be the only food of the dwarven village. Now that she knows where to look Ixi spots a few dwarfs near the fields. It looks like they are finishing for the day and heading home.

OOC:
No questions, that makes sense to me
Aha! Finally, she was getting somewhere! In retrospect, trying to get an aerial view of an underground settlement was a bit short-sighted, but the landmarks were good enough for her to find her way. With her eyes on the Dwarves coming back from the fields, Ixi began her descent, gliding down slowly. In avian culture, landing within arm's reach of someone was normal, but thinking back to her first interaction with a VERY surprised Dringle, Ixi opted to land a respectable few wingspans away from the nearby Dwarves, so as to not startle them.

She waved a tired wing at them. "Hail," she said, taking slow, casual steps towards them. "I am Ixi, of Highmist village. My friend Dringle said I may be able to receive some sort of ... city docu... uh... documentation here." Paperwork was a sort of foreign concept to her, so she hoped she was saying the right words. "Do you know where I might go for that?"

The farmer, is slightly startled and almost raises their tool as a weapon of defense. However as surprise leaves and their nerves settle you note recognition. Though the Avians and Dwarves have little interaction they are known to each other.

Dingle? Dont know no Dingle. But if they sent you here for papers you will be needin the scribe. I'll take ya in. Come along then miss. and throwing the hoe over his sholder he continues on his way down the trail to the clearing and eventually to the door.

You note with a bit of gratitude that the door and dimly light corridors beyond are big enough for you to not feel to trapped. The door opened into a guard room but all proceedings were quite casual and the dwarfs are obviously quite friendly with each other and polite to you. Beyond you enter a virtual maze of corridors, stairs, ramps, and eventually you enter a chamber with a window open to the sky outside. Sitting at a table is a wizened old dwarf with a younger more energetic dwarf at his side. Your escort relays your desires to the old dwarf and excuses himself off to go get dinner.

The old dwarf introduces himself M'names Adrik.
Adrik Frostbeard. Nice to meet you miss. I can help you get papers but first will be needin a bit of proof that you are who you say you are and how ya came to our door. Ya see the papers are a reflection on us as a dwarven community so ya cant expect us to just hand them out ta any that ask, now can ya?

"Thank you," she says, and follows. Her feathers fluff up in the same way that a nervous bird might as she approaches the door... only to relax as she sees the space isn't as narrow as she expected it to be. She gives polite nods of her head and small hellos to the polite dwarves she passes as her talons click-clack-click on the stone floor. She thanks the farmer dwarf once more for the escort when he leaves.

"Ixi of Highmight village," she says when Adrik introduces himself. "I am an artist by trade. I came here on the advice of my friend, Dringle, a dwarven herbalist who I helped near my home. They told me to stop here first when I said I wished to travel." She pauses for a moment. "I am not... quite sure how to prove my identity. In Highmist, we are few enough to know one another based on plumage. We do not have many who can read, let alone maintain written pages."
OOC:
Unsure if a roll to convince is needed, but I'll throw one in.

The old gnome looks at you and gives a short snort Did Dringle give you anything? he asks skeptically. Taking out the "map" you hand it over and the younger dwarf takes it. Setting it on a stone slab set on his table. As you watch you suddenly see a much better map with detailed information and a map key slowly fade into view. The young dwarf then flips it over and a page of neat dwarfish runes fades into view. After reading the page the young dwarf hand it to the older one indicating it appears legitimate.
Did your friend Dringle not tell you about the trick of this? the old dwarf ask, somewhat in disbelief, though he seems much less warry than before. You match her description, but I am surprised you were able to follow that chicken scratch of odd notes to get here in the first place. The old dwarf explains We record most important information in stone glyphs that can only be seen when next to the mother stone. The ink never fades or runs. Some add quick notes in common in on top of the stone glyphs just for quick and easy reference. I am impressed you made it here following just those. and he give you an approving nod.

Thinking back you do recall that Dringle often carried an odd wooden tablet with a thin sheet of polished granite set into it. In fact she had handed you the "note" with the hidden map on it along with such a tablet. She had NOT explained how it worked. Typical Dringle, thinking half of what she knew was "just common sense".

In short order you are set up with another sheet of stone glyphs along with some regular information written on the other side for outsiders Adrik explains. A second sheet has directions to the nearby city of Gamulur where you plan to start your adventure. The next leg of your trip should only take another day. Adrik offers to put you up in one of the guest room, with a window, for the night. You spend the evening with Adrik and his apprentice swapping stories and information.
OOC:
Let me know if you want to do anything here before heading out to Gamulur in the morning.
Jan 30, 2023 3:36 pm
Ixi deflates with a heavy sigh, shaking her head. "Dringle ... always sort of assumed that the things she knew were common sense, so I'm not terribly surprised she left that out. She's brilliant but... scatterbrained. I guess if I had to travel by foot, it would have been much harder to find my way here."

She listened intently to what Adrik said, much relaxed after the little surprise with the hidden ink. She talked about her desire to see the world, stories from her village, and laughs about time she spent with Dringle. She listened just as much as she spoke, and felt comfortable around them as the night went on. People in the village always commented on her expression and tone when she spoke; both were even and often unchanging, and she was accused of being too intense or serious. Here, though, she felt like that dwarves were more like her in that way, to much relief.

After the night of rest, she made sure her equipment was secured, and bid Adrik and his apprentice thanks and a hope to speak with them again if she should come back this way.
OOC:
Nothing else! If that's all, she'll fly out in the morning.
Jan 31, 2023 2:06 am
After a good nights rest Ixi sets out. This time better informed and instructed in the use of the map she is confident she will be able to reach the town by nightfall. The dwarves warned to to enter the city on foot or she would likely be shot at and/or arrested and the city gates close at dark.

Thoough avians are able to fly for an hour or two they have difficulty with flying longer than that without resting thir wings. Thus Ixi manages her air travel time and picks locations she can walk or rest as safely as possible. In the early afternoon she is forces to rest in the midst of a forrest. It has massive trees, small and large medows, as well as several streams and small rivers running through it.

Give me a standard test for looking around, describe you desired rest area based on the above description, roll another test for staying allert once you are on the ground.

Although the journey was tiring, it was exciting! Finally, lands more than a single flight away from Highmist.

As much as she didn't like the idea of walking, she heeded the dwarven warning. Perhaps checking out the forest wouldn't be so bad. She'll venture towards some nearby water to refill her skin, taking in the sights, new inspirations for her art already swirling around in her head. To rest, she tries to find a high tree to perch on near an open meadow, to reduce the feelings of claustrophobia.

Finding a clearing near a waterfall Ixi glides overthen flutters to the ground. Stretching her wings she samples a bit of the water before filling her water skin with the fresh water. Looking around for any berries she might recognize, Dringle had detailed several types that Ixi had never seen herself, she spots some bushes up one of the sream banks. Movin closer she finds they are indead edible, as proven by the head that pops out over the bush.

Orc
Lips stained with berry juice the orc stares at Ixi then calls over its shoulder quietly as if trying not to scare her. Ho Grund, lat yet got kigija rope? Thrak khe katu. Theres ij wierd shapend kigija kunning someat ur berries. Maybe kulknej saib catch khe.
Ixi hears more movement deeper in to woods but can not see what it is. Though from the sounds it is prety big. The orc facing her begins moving slowly to the side out of the bush.
OOC:
FYI : The dwarf simplpy suggested not flying into the city. You can fly close, then walk up to the gate.

Feb 2, 2023 4:58 pm
As the orc steps off to the side, Ixi takes steps back; she's made out the words 'rope' and 'catch' clear as day. After a few steps back, she flaps her wings to propel herself further backwards, keeping her eyes moving between the orc and the source of the noise. "Easy, easy..." She says. "I'll leave your berries. Don't make me have to use these..." She says, lifting one talon up to waist level, flexing the razor-sharp claws.

She is going to do her best to bail on this situation, not in a full-out fearsome sprint, but a cautious retreat, mixing between steps, threat displays, and burst of distance from flapping her wings, all while keeping her eyes on what's coming.

In a quick succession you start edging back and launch into the air.

Orc
The orc speeds up and at a word his companion likwise burst from the thicket. Launching into the air you pump your wings hard as a bolo whistles though the air toward your legs.

Your launch proves to be too slow and a foot is caught by the orcs rope. Thankfully your feet are the more agile, and deadly, of your limbs and you quickly untangle your foot as he yanks on it to pull you to thr ground. The first orc roars and charges jumping at you to try and grab anything it can.

You are totally supprised as the second orc launches himself high in the air and manages to grasp one of your tallons, his fall pulling you both back to the ground.
OOC:
Here is how that ran mechanically. You did a move and Evade. An evade of an attack is 1d6. Since your first dice was < 5 it would have been a fail so I just used your roll to disentagle yourself.
The 2nd orc attacked with the bolo successfully
The first moved and tride to grab you and also succeeded.

You get 2 actions move, evade, other. In this case you can escape his grip and fly away they will each get 1 attack at most should you free yourself.
