Party of Millions (C 1.3, E 1.4, L 1.5)

Feb 16, 2023 5:16 pm
Location: Downtown Archipelago - The Tower
Time: evening

Canary,

After one of Millions' guards led you to a small room with a shower and changing area and handed you a dress afterward (what does it look like? Do you wear it and let the guard have your regular clothes washed?), you followed them to "the party", which is held at a place called "noa":
https://i.imgur.com/xUxaifD.png

Like People's Organic, the place has power and it is opulent. There are dozens of people here, all with fresh clothes and clean, unmarked hands. Like children, they remind you of children, Canary. Never worked a day in their lives. Never been baked down by the sun or worried about where their next meal might come from. You recognize people from the families who rule here, as well as the hangers-on who keep them happy to make sure they get to eat and live in comfort, despite the loss of their own freedoms to do so.

There is a chef here. And menus. What do you order?

When you enter, the guard peels off and remains outside. She calls into her ear and hand to announce your arrival, probably, because Millions quickly finds you to usher you to a seat at his table, which is full of more clean and soft people. They chat amiably and tell innocuous jokes as Millions watches for his son to arrive. How do you spend the time?
Feb 17, 2023 5:23 pm
Being escorted to the shower I have this weird feeling of being "required" rather than invited. If I wanted to just walk out, could I?

I reach that clean little room with the shower and they leave me be... I glance up at the window vent... too small for me. I wonder if I could overpower the guy...

These thoughts are in my mind as I peel off my old clothes down to the skin. You can see the tan lines at my wrists. I regard myself in the mirror for a minute, then get the shower on. Realize the last time I had a warm shower it was heated by residual heat from my engines and left me smelling strongly of diesel.

A dress? Well... I slip it on and run a brush through my hair until I get out most of the tangles. Think about tying it up in a tail again, but decide to leave it loose.

https://i.imgur.com/vG51TXR.jpg

Yeah, I let them take my things to wash. They're not meaningful to me in any special way other than being my things. And clean things are better than dirty things. Especially when it's for free.
---

Once I arrive at the party it feels, at first, like everyone's watching me. Until over time I realize that basically nobody is. Oh, I don't waste time finding a strong drink. A mouthful of whatever it is they're serving. The tower... these people? Who are they? Do they realize people just an island or two away are all but starving? Like... foraging though garbage for scraps?

I put it out of my mind and just enjoy the opportunity. Tomorrow I may be moored somewhere much less accommodating. I hope that Dinero can deal. Imagine growing up with this! I close my eyes and savor each flavor, try every drink I'm offered... I don't talk much. I lean in like I'm interested in conversations but do little to participate. Well, until later in the evening when I've had enough alcohol to loosen up, maybe.

For my meal I order the Noa Burger, cause that sounds decadent. I wonder if it's actual real meat... is this a daily thing here?

Yale
As you're chewing, you notice one of the girls at the long table seated across from you - she introduced herself as "Yael" or "Yale" or something. "You drive... a big boat, right?" she asks before stabbing her fork into some leafy green vegetables. She brings the fork up to her mouth and pauses to ask, "What's that like?" She takes the bite and chews slowly, savoring each moment of the food.
Feb 21, 2023 12:14 am
I look to one side, like, is she talking to me? Of course she is... who else here drives a boat.

I nod aS I finish a gulp of my beverage, "big boat... small ship. Yeah, I do," I look at her. Not a hair out of place ... but the way she's eating. Remind me a bit of me. "It's pretty good. Freedom... respect. I guess. Feels good to be useful..." diplomatic answer, yeah. I'm not that drunk yet.

I drink another mouthful, "are you from uh... here? You ever been out on the open water?"

"I belong to Mr. Soth," she replies casually. At your question, she laughs lightly, "How can you live and not be on the open water? I escaped it for The Tower." She stabs her salad again. "What does Millions want with you? Is he bringing you in?"
Feb 21, 2023 2:23 am
Belong?

My expression sours slightly at the comment, "big difference 'tween rafting back and forth Tower and the Library or whatever... and the open seas... but..." I shrug, "I know what'cha mean."

My eyes follow that angry stab of her salad. I shake my head gently no, "nah. Contract work. Little more on the regular, though..." A thought forms in my head. "So hey... you might know, uh... Dinero then? What's he like?"

She chews quietly as you mention Dinero and ask about him. A slow smile spreads across her immaculate face. She swallows down some pure water to answer, "He's handsome. And he's Millions' son, so he's loaded. Drips jingle. All this," she gestures lazily around noa and the Crystal Court beyond, "Will be his. Why do you ask?"
Feb 21, 2023 10:13 pm
Yeah, he is loaded. Riding along with me seems like kind of a crazy thing... i wonder how Dinero feels about all this.

"I uh..." trying to keep relaxed, I take another mouthful of drink, "I might get some opportunity to work ... uh... with him. Sometime."

I look at her face. She doesn't give the feeling that she's into him, though, despite "handsome" being the first word she says.

"Was just hoping he's, you know... fair."

Yale tilts her head to the side slightly - it reminds you of a confused, but adorable puppy. "With him? You'll work for him. Nobody works with the families, Canary." She laughs lightly, the affected kind of laugh one uses to entice someone to laugh with them. "He's more than fair. He's beautiful." She reaches over to lightly pat your hand as if her words gave you comfort, then she gets back to stabbing her salad.

"Canary," Millions calls from the head of the table. "How do you like your burger?" You feel everyone at the table shift their attention to you, hanging on your answer.
Feb 22, 2023 6:46 pm
For him, huh? That's not what it sounds like.... but now I'm a little concerned.

"Thanks," I say quietly to Yale just as Millions calls out and I'm suddenly in a very uncomfortable spotlight.

"It's... really good!" I've actually barely touched it and I scoop it up to take a bite as if to show everyone. I give a thumbs-up, now, with my mouth full.

What have I gotten myself into?

You hear a few chuckles from others at the table, but Millions nods happily and they grow quiet. "Good. The chef here is my favorite. I considered bringing them into my household to be a private chef." He pauses for people around him to agree like sycophants, then he smiles. "But then, where's the profit in that? They can earn much more for the family here at noa. And... the fame of the food in Crystal Court is higher than any jingle could buy." The sycophants shift their agreement and tell him how wise he is. "What do you think, Canary? Did I make the right choice about the chef?"
Feb 22, 2023 8:10 pm
So many faces looking at me. What the hell are you doing, Millions?

"I couldn't say... sir... what do I know about cookin' anyway?" I admit, slightly shaking my head. Is it really just up to Millions? These people have to do what he says, live how he says? "but... let people do what they're best at, right?"

I'm rapidly losing my appetite, but I quickly throw down the rest of my glass. Is he just calling me out in front of everyone to what... make a point? Make me feel how important he is?

Millions
Millions chortles, "I'm talking business, Canary. Not food. You run your own ship, so you know more about it than the other people here, right?" He seems to drink in the discomfort of the other people at the table after he declared them unfit for business. Yale opens a small clamshell plastic thing and looks into the mirror to adjust her makeup.

"Let people do what they're best at," he repeats the words. "The chef would be doing that either way, wouldn't they? It's a question of whether I should keep them close and enjoy every meal or if I let them cook for everyone in the Court... and rake in the profits. Which way would you go, Canary?"
Feb 23, 2023 7:16 am
I stand up, angry for a second... but realizing where I am, I quickly try to hide it.

"You did the right thing," I finally agree through a fake-ish smile, "it's all business, right? Once you get that straight everything is easy... yeah?"

I regard my recently emptied glass. Uncomfortable in this dress and even more so in this place amongst these people... I wonder to myself if I've been drinking the same wine we carried inside. "Look... I just bring the food to your door... the wine, today, actually... no thanks to the so-called security you keep at the docks."

"Son," Millions greets Dinero before he turns to you again, Canary. "What trouble did you have at the docks, Canary?" He seems a little surprised and very interested in your answer.
Feb 23, 2023 11:29 pm
"It is good," I answer Dinero with a nod. "Holdin' court. Teachin' me a few things about business..."

But to Millions' question, I take a second and lower my eyes. It would probably be best to discuss this in private, but here we are. I lower my eyes, lean in a bit closer and summarize, "it's not for me to say how your docks are run, but I had to make some maneuvers and come 'round the back way to avoid gettin' waylaid by dock security. And we're not talkin' normal profiteering ... 'dock tax' bullsh!t either."

Yeah, dock tax... I can't count how many times I've had to pay some fee to 'friendly' dock workers only interested my 'safety.' But this clearly wasn't that.

Millions
Millions grows deadly serious. You feel the sudden shift as his smile evaporates and the people at the table find anything else to look at other than his cold eyes as he leans forward toward you, "Dremmer. Tried to waylay someone bringing goods to The Tower? We pay him and his team very well, Canary. Are you sure this is what happened? You'd testify to it?"
Feb 24, 2023 9:15 am
Also serious, I keep it low and talk only to him, "that's how I read the situation. Looked like trouble, I came 'round. All I can testify to is what I seen, and the attitude of those men looked like trouble." I don't mention Edmund, for the moment... after all, it was mostly his warning that got us on guard. But Dremmer looked like trouble and I don't turn a loaded boat from the docks for nothing.

Millions nods slowly. "Who did you deliver the wine to? Princy, I take it, since you were with Edmund, is that right?"
Feb 24, 2023 5:55 pm
"Princy... yeah, think so," I have to admit. "I don't usually come inside past the docks like this. I can name you every dock hand in the islands, I can, but who owns the place? I know you own this particular place. All I need to know."

"I will handle Dremmer, Canary," Millions says in a cadence like machine gun fire, sharp and with finality.
Feb 25, 2023 4:45 pm
Dinero... does he know? It doesn't feel like he knows.

I glance at Millions as Dinero asks about staying, but I'm missing the Refuge (aptly named in this case) and all this is... it's a lot. Dinero is attractive... not too far from my age, actually. But he's going to be working for me, right? I shouldn't be going, what.. dancing? With him?

"I'm sure you will," I answer Millions with a solemn nod. Have I just killed a man?

I glance down at the table, regretful that my glass remains empty, "I should really..." I glance towards the door entry, "...take care of my boat. I left her in a hurry and maybe... not in the best of hands."

I smile and look up at the taller men... and wonder if they've even finished washing my clothes...

Edmund,

You enter noa and your nose is filled with the smells of roasted meat, spices, and fresh vegetables. noa, as you know, all benefits from the Floating Farms nearby. Millions profits from all the families' desires to enjoy this remnant of a lost age. The people here all know you, esteemed butler of a renown family head, and many incline their heads in honor of your arrival. They don't notice the bloodstain at the cuff of your shirt or the wrinkle at your brow that indicates the stressful night you've had so far.

You find Canary sitting opposite the beautiful Yale, with Dinero sitting right beside her. Canary looks cleaner than earlier, wearing a lovely sunflower dress. She looks uncomfortable in this place, but you notice her plate is mostly empty. She's talking with Millions and it sounds like she's telling him about the trouble you had with Dremmer earlier. He says with finality that Dremmer will be handled. She's written his death warrant, most likely.

Canary,

You're trying to make an exit and look around to see Edmund has arrived at your table. He looks upset. Blue Light isn't with him. Something is wrong, you just feel it.

What do you do?
Feb 25, 2023 11:35 pm
I look up from the table. Not surprised to see Edmund here. He lives here... somewhere right? But he seems more like a behind-the-scenes kind of guy.

I glance at Dinero just wondering if they know each other, but something's not right and I'm not going to speak up first with Millions right here.
Feb 27, 2023 1:51 am
Approaching the table, I’m aware of the many faces around me. Most of which see me in a positive light - I have the privilege and the reputation of being the one to help others feel more comfortable. But I’m not fool enough to think any of them will stand up for me if a conversation with Millions or Dinero goes South.

I know my place.

I greet them beginning with Millions, then Dinero, Yale, and Canary. "Deepest apologies for intruding. I’ll try not to take too much of your time."

Dinero stands and offers you a hand, Canary.

What do you do?
Feb 27, 2023 4:36 pm
I stand on my own, a little half-nod to Dinero. I see your gesture, and appreciate it, but no thanks.

Little things mean more in a place like this... I'm growing more and more sure, too, that Dinero doesn't yet know.

It's good to see Edmund again, actually, "Edmund," I feel a little self-conscious in this dress, "Everything good?"
Feb 27, 2023 10:33 pm
"Unfortunately, very few things are good at the moment." A small sigh escapes me. I'm tired. Not the kind of tired that comes from being physical, or from a last of rest. This kind of tired is rooted in trying to make sense of a world that is shattering, trying to play political games that others have been bred for, and a constant fear that nothing is safe.

I extend my hand, holding a crisp, sealed envelope to Canary. "The agreed upon payment. I hope you find it to your liking." As I reach my hand I become aware of the blood on the cuff. I rotate my hand to hopefully shield it from Dinero and Canary.

"I have a couple questions for you Ms. Canary. We’ve been in business together for quite some time, so your reputation with me is playing in your favor." My eyes narrow and my voice is stern, "I must know about how Blue Light came to be in your service."
Mar 1, 2023 8:09 am
I walk a few steps away with Edmund, at least some of the attention of the room is off of me, of us... but this doesn't feel like a happy reunion.

I note the blood as he hands me my payment. With a nod I take it, but don't open it here. A sign of trust, but also a little self-conscious in this setting.

I lean in closer, "Blue Light?" I wonder what this is about, of course, "hired gun from the freighter... met him today. Or... or is it yesterday..." I'm unsure of the time.

Then I glance again at the blood I can't quite see on Edmunds cuff.

"Did something happen?"
Mar 2, 2023 12:19 am
I pause. Not because I want to, and certainly not for theatrics. Rather, the words stick in my throat. Some amalgamation of rage, fear, anxiety, and sorrow seem to be holding the vocalization back.

Suddenly, it seems that there is a small pocket of silence amongst the general din of Millions's party in the noa, a small world that only Canary, Dinero and I inhabit.

A tear slides its way down my cheek, and the words start to quietly slip out, "John escorted Blue Light and me to Princy's. She waited while Blue Light and I made our way to Princy with the consignment." I breathe a shaky breath. "The next thing I know Blue Light put two bullets into him. I don't know if it was personal or hired, but I'm going to figure it out."
Mar 2, 2023 12:38 am
That stuns me.

I blink as my mind races, "wait... B... Blue Light..." I shake my head slightly and gaze down at the ground, "... killed Princy?" I heard him but it doesn't process. "You're sayin' he's dead?"

I brought him here... is this on me? He was there on the freighter... they vouched for him. Right? And he seemed like a decent fellow too... I shared frellin' coffee with him! How could I not even...

I clutch the material of my borrowed yellow dress with one hand. Feeling hot...

Suddenly I look back up to Edmund's eyes, "where is he now? Blue light?"
Mar 2, 2023 1:04 am
"I stopped him..." I cut myself off and force myself to make the correction, "No. I killed him before he could do anything else, even pull the trigger another time."

I extend my hands, which I notice are trembling, and display the blood staining the cuffs of my shirt. Everything is blurry through the tears continuing to well in my eyes, "I don't know if this is his or Princy's." Opening my hands, I hold the two empty casings from Blue Light's sidearm and pass them to Canary.

"I was able to stabilize Princy. But recovery will be a long and difficult journey. He will likely have lasting physical challenges, and almost certainly psychological hurdles to overcome. Please, any information you have about where he came from or who hired him will be appreciated."

I become suddenly aware of how much I just said, and the presence of Dinero. I eye him nervously to see if I can tell what his thoughts are on this news.
Mar 2, 2023 1:29 am
Edmund did that?

My face falls from anger to sympathy. I take the casings Edmund offers, but also gently tough his hand as I do, "then you saved Princy's life... you did good."

I can't shake the feeling that I should have known.

"There's not much I can tell you about him. I picked him up from the [Levitan], on the sea road. We shared some... stories. Nothing that..." I try and remember. he told me about an adrift sailor, a captain who leapt in the sea to swim to a haunted storm... "Just old tall tales... Nothin' seems. Nothin' to explain this."

I follow Edmund's gaze to Dinero, then remember, "oh... he did say he was from 'round here. But that sounded like years ago the way he told it."
Mar 3, 2023 2:57 am
I relax a little after seeing Canary's reaction. "I am not one to behave rashly; however, I am determined to get to the bottom of this." I confide to her. "Hopefully, I can find the strength not to seek retribution, but understanding. And justice." I add.

I nod my head a little as I mentally run through our brief conversation and the events of the evening leading up to this moment - trying to make sure I didn't miss saying something important.

I step back slightly, creating space for a more welcoming mood. The privacy required of the conversation so far is fading.

"Thank you for listening, Canary. I don't mean to take up any more of your evening, though my presence has likely already ruined the mood for you. This is quite the lovely soirée Millions is hosting and you should experience as much as you can. Jean-Luc, behind the bar over there," I point to a svelte young man with a tight-fade haircut and fashionable glasses who is mixing drinks, "Makes a piquant drink called the 'Oceanside' that I think you may enjoy. By the way, you look charming in that dress, though I must say I also find your yellow slicker suits you perfectly as well."
Mar 3, 2023 5:27 pm
Retribution? It sounds like he's already... oh... what if Blue light wasn't here for his own reasons. Could that be?

Edmund is all over the place. He's stressed... I wonder if he's forced to scramble like this often? He's always cordial to me... but our interactions tend to be short and done with. It's like he's overwhelmed and his reflex to be a good host just pours out.

"I..." I glance over at Dinero and Millions, wishing now that I'd said no, "I gotta get outta here.... that..." I do like a fancy drink though... don't get many chances, "that does sound nice... but."

I haven't seen my boat in half a day now. And I didn't name her Refuge for nothing.

I lean close, "I need to get back to my boat... any excuse... can you make that happen?"
Mar 3, 2023 7:54 pm
When the two of you look around, you see Dinero is near but pretending not to be listening in. There's a guard watching the two of you as well. Millions and his table have returned to their feast.
Mar 4, 2023 12:20 pm
Canary and Edmund,

As you survey the restaurant, you see a new guard coming into the place - it's John. She's escorting Litch and Kestrel - the Talons.

Litch,

John leads you into a very fancy restaurant, one that's too expensive for most to ever darken the doorstep. Inside is Canary in an adorable yellow dress speaking with Edmund Sterling.

What do you do?
Mar 4, 2023 12:58 pm
Canary wants to get back to her Refuge, and I also wish to return to mine. I need to monitor Princy. But the way that Dinero keeps glancing over his shoulder is starting to cause a pit in my stomach.

Looking around the room it's starting to feel like Canary and I are in a cage. "That may be easier said than done, Ms. Canary."

Your best way through is to just sit tight. Due to everyone's invitations to be here, Millions is honor-bound to keep your group safe for as long as you're in noa. Step foot out, into Crystal Court, and it's much looser. Millions' guards will put down a fight, but probably only after shots are fired.
Edmund says:
OOC:
Who or what poses the biggest threat to me?
As you look around the party, you recognize that the Fountaineer Kamae Santised is here... after he blew off Princy's gathering earlier today. You get the feeling that he's a threat to you specifically. You can't put your finger on it, but you know it's true.
Edmund says:
OOC:

Dinero is the key. If he is with Canary, nobody from Millions' guards will bother you.
Mar 4, 2023 8:35 pm
My eyes, naturally, are immediately drawn to the bright yellow dress. I'm accustomed to seeing Canary with some kind of headwear: a hood, scarf, or hat. Seeing her without a covering makes me flicker my eyes away to observe the other figures standing nearby, and then back to her. John leads us in her direction and I tear my eyes away from the golden fabric to the object of her focus: Edmund Sterling.

I'm on guard now. I had wanted a low-key conversation with Edmund, but the topic of that dialogue isn't at all appropriate with all of the eyes and ears in this room. Thankfully, John provided me with another reason to be here. Sort of.

"That may be easier said than done, Ms. Canary." I overhear him mutter to her, before he takes a look around the room, hesitating only briefly in his scan. I stop a few paces away from them and clear my throat. "You called for us, Mr. Sterling?" I ask, hoping that by using his surname with an honorific - which I have never used in addressing him before - will be enough for him to play along.
Mar 6, 2023 2:27 am
Interesting how Dinero’s attention seems to be on Canary, moreso than me. Seems that Millions’s spawn may be the ticket to helping Canary seek out her refuge. As I’m turning back to Canary I catch the chiseled features and slicked back hair of someone I expected to see earlier in the day, but didn’t. Kamae - and I’ve got a feeling from them that makes my heart race the same way it did on the docks, and the same as when Blue Light reached for his gun - but this time I feel it pointed at me.

A voice snaps me out of these realizations, and I notice Litch and Kestrel approaching us. I can’t help but smile to myself at the thought of feeling like I’m trapped in a cage when the birds join us.

"Good evening Master Litch." I give a polite bow to him, his partner, and John. Frankly, I’m relieved to have Litch here, though how he addressed me is odd. Usually, he refers to me as "Princy’s Pet" or "Ed" neither are names I’d like to have catch on, but maybe he's simply respecting the fact that there are so many people around us. Still, I’ve come to find his irreverence for the ways of the Tower somewhat endearing. Perhaps the fact that he is with John insinuates that he knows more about the events of tonight. "You seem particularly civilized at this late hour. With punctuality like this you’ll put me out of a job. Though I digress, you’re correct. I have a job for you. Please, pardon me for but a moment."

Leaning to Canary, I whisper to her, "It seems you've caught Master Dinero's eye. His apparent interest in you may be the most effective way for you to get what, or where, you want. I can't help but feel I have a target on me, so getting some distance from me may be prudent."
Mar 6, 2023 4:14 pm
What is Litch doing here? Who cares... actually. I'm happy to see him. I'm suddenly feeling like I'm a prisoner instead of a contractor or whatever... and any situation with Litch in it will skew the right way. I'm sure of that.

"Mister Litch," I smile as politely as I can muster and try to keep calm despite the growing discomfort in the air. I nod to John, I for sure don't know all of the Tower guards by name... there seem to be an unending supply.

I nod quietly back to Edmund at his ... advice. Caught his eye? Really? "Target? You? Why... Edmund..." I stop to take a breath. I've been in much worse situations than this, but being away from the Refuge it feels like the worst. I concentrate on calming down.

I turn my eyes back to Litch for a moment, then take a deep breath, smooth out my dress and turn to where Dinero stands near his father.

"Dinero! Could I borrow you for a sec.. a moment? I have a question."

Edmund, I hope you're right...
Mar 6, 2023 9:13 pm
Edmund puts my own vocabulary to shame. My eyebrow arcs in amusement when he calls me civilized, but he seems to be going along with my suggestion. The butler has mastered the art of whispering. I'm standing mere feet away and cannot pickup even a single word he murmurs to Canary. I clasp my hands in front of me and wait. I turn my head slightly, taking in the third of the room I can see from my current vantage point. There is a lot of color in this single room, from the bright lights, to the variety of fabrics decorating each body.

I lean over to make whispers of my own to Kestrel. "Anything or anyone look like trouble?"

As Dinero draws me away, I glance at Litch, then take a long look at Edmund, I point at him and mouth, "wait for me" before going with Dinero to a quiet place.

As soon as Dinero says that, though, I'm very pleasantly surprised at his attitude, "frell yeah. Yeah he did!" I glance over his shoulder to ensure nobody's listening as well as to make sure Edmund isn't trying to disappear.

I lean a little closer to Dinero, "I'm thinkin' let's get out of here, then... how's now?"

Dinero
Canary,
Dinero glances back at the table with the attractive Yale as she laughs at something Millions said. You can see the pull of going to a party in his reaction, but he nods, "Alright, cap'n. Whatever you say, we do." He turns to head for the entrance to noa to lead you out of here, assuming you're following.

What do you do?
Mar 7, 2023 10:44 pm
Cap'n... he doesn't really mean it... yet. There's no real respect there. I get it, I have to earn that... I'd rather have it this way than have his father command him to show me respect. That'd probably never get us anywhere.

I smile and nod in return, "then let's do it!" I fiddle with the strap of my dress a bit, then point to Edmund, "Edmund is your man, right? Have him bring my things and meet us at the Refuge. He knows where she's docked."

I try and catch Litch's eye. I'm not sure why he's here and I wish I could ask, but he's welcome to come.
Mar 7, 2023 11:48 pm
I nod in response to Kestrel's estimation of the threat level. I didn't need to ask her; I know we're outnumbered here. Stands to reason. But hearing her give an exact count gives me a small measure of comfort. The little, yellow bird seems finished with her quick side bar and shoots a glance in my direction. I meet her eyes and lift my head in acknowledgement of her attention. To Edmund, I say, "We'll join you, Mr. Sterling. We can talk about our next steps on the way."
Mar 9, 2023 2:16 pm
With Dinero leading the way, all of you are able to extricate yourselves from noa without any of Millions' guards bothering you. You can gather Canary's belongings and head outside to the docks together. Do all of you head for the Refuge which is docked at Vassal Pier? If so, go right ahead and tell me what you do.

Mr. Sterling, you notice Kamae excuses himself from the table where he was seated and starts trailing you.

OOC:
Of course I'm going! Will wait to see who is along before saying too much.
I grab my gear, strap on my sawed-off, but I'll wait till we board the Refuge to take the time to change out of this yellow dress.

I keep quiet on the way down, it's a little awkward not being able to speak freely with Dinero along. Although I was happy to hear his eagerness to get away, I really don't know if his eyes and ears are also Millions', too, so for now... keep it close.

I'm hoping Edmund will come along. It sounds like he's had one of the worst days ever... maybe he just needs a break from this place. With me? I don't know... I can give him a ride anywhere. And Litch... they seem pretty close actually.
Mar 10, 2023 1:13 am
With a subtle nod I collect what I must and move to fall in line behind Canary and Dinero.

As I pass Litch and Kestrel I say just loudly enough for them to hear, "I could be wrong but Kamae Santised, the Fountaineer with their hair slick-backed," I tilt my head in their direction to quietly guide Kestrel and Litch's attention, "may be following me for reasons beyond my understanding at this moment. I'm happy to discuss potential payment a little later. If you don't mind following a few seconds behind us I would be in your debt."

I sidle up toward Canary. "If you don't mind, I would be honored to see you back to the Refuge."
Mar 10, 2023 6:32 am
I keep pace with Edmund and pick a moment of relative privacy to accept his offer. More than accept, "I was hoping you would... if you need an exit there's a place for you on board."
Mar 10, 2023 3:48 pm
I don't respond to Edmund, but take another three paces, reach out for Kestrel's arm, and turn down another corridor perpendicular from the direction we were headed. We walk a few more steps before I stop and turn toward her. "Eddie thinks someone has marked him. Someone with slick, black hair. Let's hang back a bit, then we'll trail after this fellow." I reach inside of my oilskin coat for a pack of cigarettes. I don't smoke, neither does Kestrel. But we've made use of the smokesticks as a prop to blend into the surroundings while we observe our marks. I offer one to her and pull out a lighter. Meanwhile, we watch the main corridor out of our peripheral vision, waiting for Kamae to pass.
Mar 10, 2023 7:40 pm
Canary's invitation warms my heart a little from this isolative chill I have felt all evening. Her offer seems genuine, if a little surprising. "Believe me when I say I would love to, but I'm afraid there are still a couple matters to which I must attend. I would still like to see you off." It's nerve-wracking even thinking about what I still need to take care of, not to mention the shame I would feel if something happened to Princy or the others if I were away. But once I know they are in a good position, I believe I have some situations to address out here.

I believe Dinero may be able to shed some light on what is happening tonight. First things first, let's see if I can get some information out of Kamae. "Ms. Canary, I do believe I'm being followed. I'm going to see if there is anything I can help with here before working to catch up with you and Mr. Dinero. In case I don't see you again, please have a lovely evening, and thank you again for your services today."

With that I stop and turn back down the hall, in hopes of getting some answers from Kamae.
Mar 10, 2023 9:36 pm
"Foll... hey... all right..." Edmund is like that. Always thinking of the next item on his to do list or whatever he keeps in that busy brain. "Be careful!" I call out after him as he hurries back.

I steady myself and turn back towards the exit.

"Let me show you the Refuge, Dinero. And..." this is the tricky part, "be good if I know what your father told you about this... arrangement."

OOC:
I feel like there's a bit of confusion (at least there is for me) on who is where. I'm going to pull all the PCs outside onto Vassal Pier because the conversation felt like you were seeing Canary off and laying a trap out here for Kamae. Trying to do this inside The Tower would involve Millions' guards and that's not very safe because they're trigger-happy and well-armed.

Here's an updated map of Vassal Pier:
https://i.imgur.com/3q44ANT.png
Litch and Kestrel slip away from Edmund, Canary, and Dinero to pretend to smoke among the folks standing around at Vassal Pier sharing
drinks around a barrel fire in the cold evening.
Edmund has a brief word with Canary before he turns to set himself to have a conversation with Kamae.
Canary and Dinero head to the dock where Whopper waits around and starts pulling ropes off of poles that helped moor the Refuge to the pier.

Kamae Sanitised walks outside onto the pier and scans the place looking for you, Edmund. When he sees you, he pulls his left hand out of the pocket of his fine black trenchcoat and opens his gloved hand, palm facing up. Litch and Edmund, you both see several small metal balls hum and float upward into the air, little vibrating wings extended from their sides. The floating balls seem to be the size of a big gumball - they're hard to see in the murky night but seem to be at least six of them.

After he sets the little balls up into the air, he strides forward to you, Edmund. He seems unconcerned about Litch and Kestrel as he approaches you.

What do you do?

Dinero
Canary,
Dinero looks up at your sturdy ship with a soft smile, "It's been a while since I was on board." He clambers up the gangway to get onto the ship and pauses when you ask him what Millions told him about the arrangement. He turns to offer you a hand up (not that you need it), "My dad talked you into offering me a job. I'm part of your crew. Learning the trade, how to sail and sell on the waters like you." He states it simply, a bit like he's eager and also as if he's used to getting his way.
Mar 12, 2023 6:50 pm
I don't take the hand up, even still wearing this dress it wouldn't be right to take a hand boarding my own vessel. It looks like it's been taken care of. Good.

I set down my stuff and unlock the cockpit, listening to Dinero and nodding as I find a lot to agree to.

"Sounds like we've got that straight. Good." I keep busy pre-checking the gauges in case a need to leave in a hurry arises.

I don't expect to dash off before Dinero has a chance to speak to his father, but I am tempted.

"I know you can handle yourself at sea," I state simply, "but there's places we'll go where your reputation won't be worth much. Can you handle a gun?"

"Are we leaving now? I've got some... luggage back at the Tower, so..."
Mar 12, 2023 8:27 pm
It is challenging to make out any details beyond the distinct silhouette of Kamae as they emerge out on the docks. However, the small comfort that the Talons are providing me is quickly chased away. I feel that pit in my stomach again as Kamae seems to notice me and tosses something into the air.

I attempt to take cover behind some barrels and shout to them, "Kamae! Have I done something to offend you!?"
Mar 12, 2023 9:16 pm
I nod, yeah.

"You're right, I don't think I'll regret this. Hope you don't either."

But then shake my head "no, we got some time. Get your stuff, you can stow it below deck, I'll show you how to open her up..."

I get up from the cockpit and show him the hatch near the rear of the deck and how to open it. I keep it pretty secure.

Luggage? I wonder what he feels is necessary, "keep it light, ok?"

Kamae walks past our location and we wait four five heartbeats before slowly sauntering behind him, cigarettes still lit and cradled between our fingers. My other hand goes reflexively to my belt when the water boy puts his hand inside of his coat. I can't see what he removes, by I can hear a whirring sound around him that soon fades. He and Edmund exchange words and the latter dives for cover behind a stack of casks.

Princy's mortal status is of little interest to me. The Tower Lords are always feuding. I don't take sides unless I'm paid to...or called to. Sterling said this fellow is a Fountaineer. They're more use to the city than the Tower Lords. I won't risk getting on this one's bad side unless it's necessary. Ed asked us to follow. We have, now he's in our debt. I intend to collect. Which means I will need him alive. Beyond that, I'm content to wait and see how this situation plays out.

I crouch to the ground and put out the lit, but unused cigarette butt, then fling it away as I stand back up. I'll need both of my hands free for whatever comes next.
Mar 13, 2023 10:55 pm
I stay on the Refuge, stand, and watch him go, still, I wonder if this has been a huge mistake.

But he actually seems... all right.

I take time to change back into my work clothes and actually make some room below deck for Dinero. I quietly plan to sleep up in the cockpit for the next several days, but we'll see how things are.

I make sure to find Whopper and thank her for taking good care, and see if anyone came poking around. I doubt it, but worth knowing.

Ugh... I forgot to get that fifty-cal ammo from Millions... no. Not going back up there to ask. I'll get a lead somewhere else. The pay from the wine should be enough to manage for a while until work comes along, and it always does.

"So what’s next? Kill me, then go up and finish the job? Are we so in the way of your plan you can’t just let us be? Or do you honestly think I’d deign to bite at the only hand that’s shown me appreciation and respect for the past twenty years!?"

Assassination.

I sit in stunned silence as Kamae draws ever-nearer, the swarm of orbs humming around my unmoving frame. Why should I bother fighting, to save the fool I apparently am?

I have nothing outside of Princy. No wealth to call my own. No power to leverage. A reputation that I thought earlier today was, "For help, find Edmund;" but maybe everyone simply sees me for the fool I am.

Sitting there on the rail pulling on my second boot, I hear Kamae's raised voice as he accuses Edmund.

Dren!

They're close, just over there, but the ramshackle floating houses of the Vassal Pier block my view. I'm about to hop off and run over when I hear Litch's unmistakable voice...

Ok, we may need a getaway...

In one smooth motion, I toss the mooring rope overboard and leap down to the cockpit, then throw the Refuge into gear... reverse... and punch the throttle to swing her nose around to port. A quick burst forward, then, should pull me up and around the bulk of the pier and into view of the docks.
Mar 14, 2023 7:59 pm
The orbs that I now notice hovering in the air might be aimed for Edmund, but I'm not taking any chances. With a flick of my wrist, I send a hatchet in Kamae's direction. It's quick and inaccurate, but maybe I'll get lucky. At the very least, I intend to distract him as I launch both myself and Kestrel behind the nearest shipping containers, angling my body so that if one of us is hit, it's me and not her.

Litch,

Two of the floating metal balls with wicked red eyes emit searing red lasers. One hisses past your ear [targeting unsuccessful - recorded for analysis], burning the inch of flesh it touches. The other hits you right in the chest [center mass - highest strike rating]. It burns like a cigarette on bare flesh and eats through (3-harm AP).

Litch and Edmund,

You hear the whistle of your hatchet fly and strike true - right in Kamae's shoulder to the bone. Blood spurts from an artery and he screams in sudden pain and shock. Without thinking about it, he grabs the handle to wrench it free from his pristine body. An explosion of blood from the wound leaves him staggering and falling on the dock right by Edmund's barrel. He's dying.

Those floating balls are still tracking each of you.

You hear the Refuge has started up and Canary's pulling her around for a quick GTFO.

What do you do?
Mar 15, 2023 2:01 pm
I don't have time to revel in the sight of my axe hitting true. The flying ball bearing also hits its mark and I clench my teeth as the laser burns through leather, cloth and flesh. That'll be another second degree burn. I conclude wryly. As soon as we hit the deck, I'm pushing Kestrel onward. Adrenaline and experience kick in and the pain fades slightly. It's like a perverse form of mindfulness. We've got a goal; survive. That is where our focus goes.

I hear the sound of a ship engine and the lapping waves caused by the great wake of a large vessel. Unfortunately, she's on the other side of the death orbs, blocking our exit across the docks. But there's another escape route. "Kestrel! Dive!" I tap her leg and spring up with her, racing for the edge of the jetty and plunging into the waters.

Litch,

You move for the waters and Kestrel is only moments behind. You hit the cold water and swim down, hoping the last breath you gulped is enough. The water diffuses the laser lights as they brighten your darkness and cast the pier's tethers in crimson light.

Edmund,

You witness as Litch flings a hatchet at Kamae while Kestrel flings a dagger at one of the metal orbs. They run and jump into the waters and swim down, escaping the floating eyes. You see as one of them hums and watches the two Talons retreat into the water, then it floats away, towards the Fountain.

Meanwhile, Kamae is still dying on the Vassal Pier, in the filth he despises. Canary has pulled the Refuge nearby and seems ready to help you escape.

What do you do?
Mar 15, 2023 3:49 pm
I watch the bloody scene unfold before me. It all seems so sudden, and yet as if it is happening in slow motion.

The gaping wound in Kamae’s neck has eerie similarities to the situation with Blue Light mere hours ago.

Still… Kamae is moving. Someone could still tend to them. Someone might still be able to save them.

I look back to where Litch and Kestrel were standing just a moment ago but they are gone. I catch a blur of motion out the corner of my eye and hear a pair of splashes hit the water.

My legs are numb. Even if I made it over the edge of the dock, would I be able to successfully swim to safety? Would they hunt all of us?

I look back to Kamae - their leg is pushing at the dock as if trying to find some purchase to go get help. Their hands are hovering over the wound.

My attention shifts back to the Refuge, now pressing closer into the dock. If I were to have a chance at making it aboard I would have to leave now.

A scared sob from Kamae pulls me back to them. If I left them here - would I just be the fool, or traitor, they think me to be. Will I be blamed for all the drelk that has gone wrong here tonight. If I leave, will I just put a target on Canary and her operations, or Litch and his family? If I stay and help, maybe Kamae will see that I’m not the problem they think me to be. Or maybe they’ll hold court, and judge me not worthy to live anymore.

I muster up what energy I have left and slide over to Kamae, bundling up my suitcoat and pressing it over his open wound with as much pressure as I can.

What is that light? I hear fighting, even over the sound of the Refuge's engines, but what the frell was that? Flashes of red light reflect off the shacks and structures of the piers, and something I really... really don't like the look of hovering in the air.

As I pull the Refuge around, there's a splash and a blur in my eye to starboard.

Someone's in the water!

It's a totally different thing when someone's in the water... you gotta watch out. I slow the Refuge and flip on her floods, cry out, "What the frell was that?" Is that Edward over there in the dock? Yeah... what is he... There's blood... can he hear me? "Edmund!"

I set the Refuge still in the water... still drifting slowly forward... and try to find whoever's in the drink. I leave the cockpit and hit the starboard rail. Grab a coiled nylon line to drop down.

Barely recognize the ol' wolf all wet.... and pretty sure he's not the only swimmer we got here, "hey! Litch? You need help?"

Edmund,

You're able to remove the hatchet and stop the flow of blood. With pressure, you feel the blood coagulate and his breathing starts to return to normal. He won't die, not from that hatchet, at least. You really should stay here to make sure he's carried somewhere safe, but Canary is calling for you and safety likely isn't here.

What do you do?

I’ve done what I can for Kamae, they may certainly come back to haunt us, but at least my conscience will be clear. I hope. I finish securing my suitcoat to their wound as tightly as I can, and stand.

Canary seems to be helping Litch and is close enough that I can still make it to her. I snatch up Litch’s hatchet, as well as the .38 special that I dropped a few moments ago, and return the revolver to its place beneath my vest.

I ignore the remaining orbs as I run and jump to the nearby dock that will lead me as close to Canary’s ship as possible. Approaching the edge of the dock I leap with as much force as possible.
Mar 16, 2023 1:54 pm
Edmund boards the Refuge and Canary helps Litch and Kestrel climb up as well. In a few moments, you're all on the ship as Canary pulls her away... leaving Dinero behind.

Where do you go? What do you do?
Mar 16, 2023 4:00 pm
After helping Litch and Kestrel out of the water, I quickly return to the cockpit, business-like, flip off the floods and get us out of the immediate vicinity. Out of danger, at least...

I slow, to reduce the noise and talk, "there's towels under the bench there," I gesture towards a utilitarian bench along the side rail of the mid-deck. "Can someone tell me what the frell is happening?"
Mar 16, 2023 4:23 pm
The cold water helped mitigate the sting of the laser wound, a bit. Kestrel easily boards the ship, but it's a slower process for me. With Canary's help, I'm able to swing my body over the railing, dropping heavily to the deck where I remain, gasping for painful breath. Now that we're out of direct harm, my adrenaline subsides and the pain increases. Teeth clenched, I focus instead on the cold sensation of my wet clothes covering my skin. It's unpleasant, but takes my mind off of the pain.

"O..of course Ms. Kestrel." I say, startled by her aggression, but not offended. Clearly her feelings for Litch’s wellbeing run deep.

I wonder if anyone at all would plead for me if I were in Litch’s situation.

Up until today, I’ve frequently been sought for my capabilities of providing others with medicinal remedies, or considerate hospitality; however, the horrific situations of this evening have made it apparent that I seem to have an almost supernatural capacity for helping in dire situations. My fear at this moment is that my ability to do such feats is feeding off of me somehow. Is that even possible? Am I consuming my own happiness to aid others? Is misfortune my reward for trying to elevate those around me?

What if my luck has run out? What if I’ve no happiness left to give?

I look at Litch’s strange wound. Perhaps what remains of a salve I keep with me could tide him over? It contains several medicinal properties from my private garden.

No matter what, I’ll do my best to try to help Litch here. As Kestrel's grip loosens, I move to Litch to do what I can.

"Let's keep it cool," I say quietly... also noting that nobody's filled me in yet, "what the frell hit him?" I gesture towards Litch... I haven't seen anything like that. And I've been around. "And what's whatever-the-frell-it-is doin' at the Tower?"

Dinero... I gotta get Dinero... disaster isn't it.

I don't want to distract Edmund, so I ask Kestrel. Maybe I can distract her and calm her down, "I take it we can't think of the Tower as a safe harbor given the current situation?"

Kestrel
"Mr. Sterling, did you finish off Kamae?" Kestrel asks in a tone like she expects you did the opposite, but needs to know for sure.

I open my eyes as I feel strong, yet tender fingers spread a substance over my chest. "Thanks, Eddie." I rasp. I can hear Canary firing off questions and being ignored. When Kestrel questions Sterling, I close my eyes again. "I doubt it, Kes. His first rule is to do no harm, remember? Just tell us you didn't actively help him, Ed. There are enough people still breathing who don't deserve to, mate."

I’m so focused on Litch’s wound that I don’t really register the words that Kestrel is saying. I hear Litch talking too. After a long pause, I piece together that they are curious to the status of Kamae and my role in that.

I cover the salve and slip it back into my pocket. It’s still dark at this hour, and the chill is setting in from the wind and sea. Not to mention my suit jacket is now covering the bloody Fountaineer. My fitted dress shirt and vest have little to offer in the way of warmth. I take a deep breath, trying to find some comfort, but the chill just sets its teeth in deeper.

"I’m sorry." I look from Kestrel to Litch as I confess. "While you’re mistaken about my having a rule in which I refrain from harm, Mister Litch, I don’t believe that killing Kamae was the right thing to do there. However, I’m terribly sorry you were wounded so gravely on my behalf. Killing them may have been the easy thing to do. Or the safe thing. Or I could be wrong - and maybe killing them will turn out to have been the right decision to make."

I stand and offer a hand to help Litch stand so we can go offer our thanks to Canary.

"You say there are 'enough people breathing who don’t deserve to', and I’m afraid I can’t tell what makes someone deserving of life or not. I’d appreciate your input on the matter, though I may not adopt your stance."

I accept the proffered hand and rise to my feet, back hunched slightly as the pain, though muted, still exists. I listen politely to Edmund's ramblings. He's a good man. Naïve and longwinded, perhaps, but good. Someone ought to keep him safe so he doesn't lose that quality. He may be right. The Gray Wing is never late, nor early. Death comes precisely when it's meant to. And sometimes we help it along. And I'm still breathing. Perhaps I should have taken the cat for my sigil.

"That's fine, lad." I clap an arm on his shoulder, my tell-tale gesture of camaraderie. "I'll explain it to you when you're older." I turn away from him and tip the brim of my hat to Canary. "Thanks for the rescue, lass. Mind swinging around near the other side of the docks? Our skis our moored there and it's time we headed home."

Turning back to Edmund, I say, "The Roost can be your temporary sanctuary, Ed. The Refuge is grand, but you don't have your sea legs yet. Plus," I add. "I'm sure Shrike would like to see you again."

I smile a touch, it feels good to hear them joking around, even a little bit, back there.

"Sure thing, ain't far," I put some power on the engine and gently bring us up to a low speed appropriate for being in close like this. And not loud enough to call undue attention.

Inside, though, I wonder what this little detour may have cost me. I'm going to have to get back and see where Dinero is at.

"I'm afraid I've no where else to be. I'm grateful for the offer and sorry for the trouble. I would be honored to accept your invitation while I figure out a better solution, and do my best to not be a further burden." The wealth of experience behind Litch's eyes rivals that of Princy and Millions, just in a different context.

"Ms. Canary," I call to the figure behind the helm. She is relatively petite in stature, but something about her here in this moment is more stately and impressive than I've see in her before. She has a confidence on this vessel that is palpable. "I can't thank you enough for what you've done for me. I must admit I'm worried for any problems you've encountered tonight on my behalf." I glance at the ostentatious luggage on board and back to Canary. "Based on the events of this evening, I believe I will be laying low for a while as I try to piece together what is happening in the Tower. Should you ever need anything from me that I am able to offer, please simply let me know."

Standing near the Captain, I find myself staring off at the horizon - or at least where I expect it will be. Something I find myself doing more and more when I'm around Canary. It is still a little early for even the faintest hints of dawn to grace the sky, but I can't help but dream of what it will look like, and hope that something about this world - something about the reaches we cannot see - is better than the dren we deal with here.
