Hello, everyone!

Let's have a quick session 0 to at least roughly place your characters into the story. Should be pretty smooth.

Here is our roster:

Player Character Ancestry Background Class
ctme2000 Errich Freeshadow Human Detective Rogue
Madclergy Wugruk Battleborn Dwarf Artisan Champion
Manhattan Dante Everett Human Noble Sorcerer

Note

As this is just the beginner box, I will follow the adventure pretty much as written. For that reason, I won't go through the safety process (lines/veils, etc.) but if ever at any point you're uncomfortable with anything, please don't hesitate to reach out via PM.

The small seaside town of Otari is known for its fresh fish and skilled sailors, but above all, it’s a big logging town, providing valuable wood to the nearby metropolis of Absalom. But for you, Otari is home. You grew up playing on the docks, getting lost in the nearby woods, and hearing the fantastical stories of travelers from faraway lands, tales of terrifying dragons and virtuous knights. Such adventure always seemed so distant — until today!

Word has begun to spread around Otari that there’s a problem down at the Otari Fishery. Some are saying that some sort of beast is lurking in the basement, feeding on the stores of salted fish. Folks are worried that whatever is eating the fish might get hungry enough to eat the fishers next!

You’ve received a letter from Tamily Tanderveil, the owner of the Fishery. Inside is a desperate plea for help. With the town guard busy protecting the loggers, she needs a few brave souls to venture down into the basement of her warehouse and put an end to the beast that’s feasting on her fish! Do you have the courage to face the menace under Otari?
Please introduce your characters: How do they carry themselves? What first impressions might someone have of them?
Additionally:
- How do they know Tamily?
- How do they know each other, if at all? (I can elaborate on the town of Otari if it helps)
- Why are they taking on this job?

Feel free to pick whether this is in or out of character, and be mindful about what you want to make known - both to other players and/or their characters.

If you'd like only me to know about something, you can PM me or use a private note...

Dante Everett is in his 20's, stands at 6 feet tall, and has an easy charm about him. There’s always a lazy smile on his lips, the kind of nonchalance someone who moves easily through life will have. His golden eyes glimmer like that of a cat’s, sparkling with a mischievous glint. His long, dark hair ripples like a midnight tide, cascading down his broad shoulders in luxurious waves that obviously required well-tending to.

He carries himself with the effortless grace of someone accustomed to getting what he wants, and everything has been easy for him. He wears expensive, refined clothes that accentuated his elegant figure, with broad shoulders and lean waist.

After being cast out of his family home, Dante knew that he needed to find a way to make a living. He had some savings, but he also knew that his fondness for the finer things in life meant that those savings would not last forever. When he met Tamily at a tavern, they struck up a conversation, and he found out that she used to supply salted fish to the Everett household. Tamily was one of the few people who had shown kindness to him after he was disowned, and when she offered him the job to help with the beasts in her basement, Dante gladly accepted.

Wugruk's hammer fell across the hot iron laid upon his anvil, sending sparks flying and leveling a small warp in the blade. It was a simple tool, the hammer, and the blade he was forging, but necessary for the loggers of this town. It would make a fine axe for some jack to use to fell the mighty trees, or defend themselves against a wolf or bear. Though the latter was more of a thought of fantasy for him than it was for some poor sap who was just trying to do his job and got cornered by a wild beast, they’d do best to run. He pulled the ax blade up off the anvil with his tongs and lowered it into the quenching liquid nearby, a heavy sizzle and set of steam issued forth, always a satisfying sound.

He pulled the blade out and looked it over with high scrutiny, the warp was gone, and now where a slightly wobbly blade had been now there was a straight and fine edge to be sharpened. Wugruk laid the blade back down onto the anvil and put his hands over it, he closed his eyes solemnly, and began to pray "Angradd bless this steel, forged in your honor, to cut deep the trees over the land beneath the sky, and to it’s wielder grant your protection" it was a blessing only in spirit, as Angradd had no ability to impart magics into a vessel like the blade. Though he had faith that Angradd would look over the keeper of each of the weapons forged in his name.

"Wugruk!" a burly voice called out from behind him, "You’ve mail" the large human male who owned the shop called out as he laid a letter on a nearby table before turning back to his forge and pushing the large billows down to reheat it. Wugruk retrieved the letter and opened it, smudging its slightly ivory color with soot.

"It seems I am needed to protect this town, Angradd blesses me with a battle to fight." Wugruk laid the letter on the forge and removed his apron and stretched his arms over head. He then caught a glimpse of his soot filled blonde beard in a small mirror not far from his anvil. "I need a wash..."

It took more than a little time for Wugruk to finish washing himself to a presentable state, gather up his pack, don his chainmail armor, and retrieve his Dwarven Waraxe from its weapon rack. He thought back to how he’d met Tamily, having taken on a bill of materials for her, metal hooks for hanging fish, chains, and even a custom fishing rod with a fine wooden handle engraved with her family seal. The last of which was more of a personal project for Wugruk, a sort of thank you for the business she’d given him. He had spoken with her at length of a few pints of ale about how he’d taken up the sacred mantle and was drawn to Otari by a dream. In the dream he saw a great furnace and a great blonde headed dwarf hammering away, and upon the anvil was an axe, and on the axe was engraved the word Otari.

When he awoke it was all he could do to pack before immediately chartering travel to Otari. He knew what was meant, he would be the axe to eliminate any evil that would plague this town. It was his charge. He knew not why, but like the great god Angradd he would stand ready for threats from below. Now it was time to face those threats, and Wugruk was ready.

After reading Tamily's letter, Errich folds it in two and places it in his inside pocket. He's perturbed by the urgency of which it is written. He's known Tamily for awhile, and that's not her typical calm, cool, and collected self. He quickly skims through a tome of Otari history, and some newspaper clippings he's gathered throughout the past few years, on strange happenings in the city, to see if anything connects with what the letter mentioned.

Satisfied that there's nothing there, he gathers his things and heads for the Fishery. He's assisted Tamily before with more menial tasks (late night stakeouts on rival fisheries, intimidating ne'er do-wells from her warehouse, solving the infamous 'theft of the thousand diamonds' case - more like ten actually, smuggled via anchovies, but the public likes a spectacle).

Never an honest-to-goodness monster though! Well, possibly a monster. More likely, just some miscreants who needed a good thwacking. But regardless, there was a spring in his step at the prospect of a new, and hopefully more interesting, adventure.
