WELCOME @Matchacha

This thread is for your character creation. Take a look at welcome and character creation.

If you have any questions you can post them here or if you think they are general on the Q&A

@Matchacha let me know if your have any questions and when you're character had been submitted to the game
Apr 9, 2023 2:38 am
Thank you for the welcome.

I think I've got most of it figured out. One question though.
I want to play a human heritage so do I put the extra trait under the heritage section?
Apr 9, 2023 2:46 am
Yep. So a human just has 3 traits. They can be from the list or made up. Just explain what your want to be able to do and I can help work it into the system.
Apr 9, 2023 2:53 am
Okay. I'm thinking of a character that was unwillingly a (trade) street-urchin at first so she has the survivalist trait.
Was then helped by someone get off the street. They taught her magic and some healing or nursing wounds so I was also thinking spell-touched and healer traits?
Apr 9, 2023 2:57 am
Sounds fine. We've been getting allot of spell touched lately.
Urchin with a mentor. What got you away from town and or adventuring? I am this of everything to help set up their into into the game
Apr 9, 2023 3:04 am
Actually I have a thought on how to bring your character into the game with an interesting twist. Submit your character when you feel ready and I will see if my idea will meet will with your character
Apr 9, 2023 3:06 am
Hmmm if there is too much spell-touched I can try spell-reader. How common would scrolls be?
Can my character be from a freehold? I was thinking she felt there were enough people in her town taking care of stuff and so she wanted to go exploring and help people elsewhere.
Apr 9, 2023 3:09 am
I have submitted

Any interest in a weapon? dagger, club, . . .
I like the minor magic straw. nice :)

Added details for spell-touched and healer

About survivor. The typical context is nature survivalist. It sounded more like you wanted a urban version like street-wise. You could have been taught by a hermit who taught you wilderness survival. not a bit deal I just wanted to clarify what you meant by Survivalist.

Spell-touched is fine. If you want to switch to spell reader that is fine too. Scroll availability will be based on power level. minor magic, like what spell touched can do, will be common and you can create those scrolls yourself with time and cost. I will allow you to craft other spells that you learned from your master but you will need to test to determine success and/or cost. I will likely tweak the power a bit for my game style if you take it.
Ok as for bringing you into the story. How do you feel about being a mysterious stranger who is obviously does not belong where they show up. You would be cut off from your origin and in a totally foreign environment (shouldn't be to hard to play). What do you saw?
Apr 9, 2023 4:26 pm
Hmm lets see for weapon probably a hand axe.

Thank you.

For survivor I guess I'm thinking a little bit of a mix. She wasn't in pure wilderness but many amenities were not available to her growing up since she was poor and on the street. So she knows basic things like how to start a fire, forage, making basic things for oneself but also had other people around who were struggling to watch out for or watch over. I'm not sure if there is a better word for that kind of mix. I'm leaning towards Survivalist (maybe MacGyver?).

Hmm I like spell-reader. I'm okay with changing to that.

And yea that sounds like a good starting point to me.
Apr 9, 2023 7:42 pm
OK tweaked survivalist so it is less about nature and more about self preservation.
Survivalist says:
Through trying times you developed and instinctive sense of self preservation. You gain Advantage when Testing to scavenge, seek shelter, or avoid predator.
Spell Reader is as follows still relies on reading and using the true tongue in written form. You can create your own but this requires time, effort and money depending on the desired effect.
Spell Reader says:
You have spent years learning the true language of the arcane world, allowing you to read power-laced words from magic scrolls. You have mastered a few arcane words, inscribed into your talisman, that you can combine to craft spell scrolls. The more words combined the greater the effect and the more costly the scroll and longer it takes to craft. Spells crafted only using mastered words take half the time cost.
# Word 1 2 3 4
Minutes 1 6 60 600
Gold 1 10 100 1,000

Any spell crafted without using only these words will be at disadvantage and cost more. Attempts to craft scrolls or talismans for effects you have not mastered may fail wasting time and money. This is why most spell-readers will specialize in using the words they know and trade with others. Most cities or counties will have a spell-reader you can trade with.

Example words and talismans: Fire(combust), life(heal), conceal(advantage to hide), speed(increased movement), wind(dust devil), break(Rot wood), mend(repair a cracked vase), etc.

Pick 3 scrolls and 4 words of power.
Define 2 two word scrolls and 1 three word scroll - or just give me 3 thing you want to be able to do and I will define them for you
Words of Power are single words that you can use any aspect of the word to create spells of your own in the future. If not in combat or speed is not an issue I will assume you will use power words to crate glyphs each time. For an instantaneous spell you can use the talisman of each word once a day

Each word of power you have is inscribed into an item you keep close. Ex: the handle of you ax, a small tablet, a pouch of river stones, etc. To enact the talisman you must hold the item with the word inscribed on it. After its use it will recharge for use again the next day.
This is a bit more complicated than then basics of the game that says I just let you know what spells you can find. If it is too much I can simplify it by giving you a few more scrolls and managing the crafting of scrolls for you or just go back to spell-touched.

You will be joining it once your character is done.
Rikia's Story
Rikia was visiting some of the outer villages of the Paphos region with her mentor. The Great War had dragged on for centuries now and Rikia was not really sure why the People and Immortals were fighting but the effects on the poor people were growing worse from the stories he master had told her of the time before the war. While traveling between the villages they stayed to the roads which had periodic watch towers they could stop at and rest. Most were provisioned well, as part of the armed forces, and were willing to trade food, drink, and shelter for the night in exchange for some minor spells.

While traveling one day with her master, the sun high in the sky, they were both startled when a clap of thunder was heard. The sky was clear and her master muttered vaguely about the war but then the sky was ripped asunder. Segments were suddenly as pitch black, others filled with flame, raging storms, or a kaleidoscope of colors. Quickly! her master instructed There is a tower just ahead. They are enchanted against our immortal enemies. Run child. and he shoves he ahead I will be right behind you and my magic will keep me safe

Reassured as she sees him pull out a scroll and begin reading as he trots as fast as he can Rikia begins running, knowing if she does not her master will simply use one of his talisman to compel her obedience. She keeps her master in sight but truly begins to run when she sees he has finished his spell and sped up. Soon the tower comes into sight. The sky overhead has turned to chaos and black lightning strikes all about. Then to her horror she sees the tower itself blasted by a massive bolt of pulsing dark chaos just as two of its men run out of its door.

She does not realize she has stopped running until her master pushes her from behind. Go on girl. It is still there and to her amazement it is! A dark distortion surrounds the tower and as they approach her master reads another spell scroll and a shimmering field surrounds them both. As they near the tower it becomes hard to move forward. The landscape around them twists and flickers oddly. Keep going she is urged from behind. Staggering up to the tower door she is barely able to force her way through the twisting space. Falling to the floor Rikia looks back for her master only to see, to her horror the shimmering field is collapsing.

Be at piece Rikia and help the People The last words of her master are accompanied by his talisman containing 4 words of power. The swirling chaos closes in trapping Rikia in the tower, he master dead, shunted to the outer planes, or what she knows not. . . .

Wow the lead-in story for Rikia is great, thank you! I shall be reading the thread you linked.

The workings of spell-reader seems great. Some questions:
How would one gain mastery over more words? Would it be by making a talisman with the word?
Also are the words of power the same as the mastered words?
And for example, if 2 of my 4 power words (or mastered words if they are not the same thing) were Wind and Shield I could make a spell scroll called Wind Shield (that reflects damage back at the attacker)?
Apr 10, 2023 1:58 am
Mastered words are Words of power that you have learned and can use in your craft
Words of power are what are used to create scrolls.
Ex you have 4 mastered words of power
There are millions of words of power

You can gain words of power by finding talismans, research or trading with others. This will be rare.

A Wind Shield spell can easily deflect many attack. Reflecting is not core to the two words so would be less effective but possible.

Once you pick your words we can define a few spells you are familiar with enough to craft. Each scroll will take time money and a test to see if you succeed. The idea of the spell reader is it grants access to much greater power but is much less common. Spell-touch can more freely manipulate the magic spell readers can have greater effects.

Example : fire spells
1 word spells : Fire blast attack or opponent saves vs 2 fire damage
2 word spells : Fireball : hurl a ball of flame that explodes. Any withing the explosion must save vs 4 fire damage
3 word spells : Wall of Fire : any crossing take 4 fire damage. Those close when it is created can save for 1/2 damage.
4 word spells : Inferno : fill an area with intense flames burning all within for 16 fire damage

Example : shield spells
1 word spells : Shield : blocks any 1 attack directed at you within the next round.
2 word spells : Mana Shield : the shield has 6 hp and any damage you take while it is active is instead dealt to the shield. It wll stay active till dismissed or it runs out of hp
3 word spells : Protection : Give advantage on all saves and allows you to roll to dodge any attack without having to use the dodge action. This lasts 1 minute.
4 word spells : Force Wall : creates an impenetrable barrier that lasts 10 minutes. Wall, dome, cube, or sphere shaped

Okay makes sense.

This is what I have for the 4 words of power on the talisman (I'm assuming) from Rikia's mentor.
Fire, Shield, Wind, Speed.

As for scrolls I have (I hope I'm doing this correctly):
Wind Shield - On self or one person that the spell-reader can see, create a shield that blows attacks back at the enemy
Fire Arrow - An arrow made of fire deals damage and sets fire to one creature within 100ft
and has for the 3 word spell I essentially want a version of Shatter but I don't know how to define that.
Apr 10, 2023 2:20 am
Ooh okay I'll have to pick something different then Wind Shield then since I'm assuming just Shield can do the deflecting of attacks.
Apr 10, 2023 3:05 am
ok - edited above post with more detail

Basic Talisman spells
Fire : Flame blast attack 2 damage on 3 nearby targets, create/extinguish flames
Shield : block 1 attack against you after it hits, advantage on dodge for 1 minute
Wind : Gust pushes target back 15 feet, Float on the wind doubling jumping distance or reducing falling damage
Speed : Dash with double movement for 1 minute, grant nearby target + 1 action for 1 round

Scroll 2 Flame Darts: (fire/wind) throw 6 fiery darts at any target. Roll to hit for 1 damage each. Hit or miss target must save or take 4 fire damage, save for half

scroll 3 Shatter : (wind/fire/speed) An explosive force fills the area in front of you. All targets within suffer 8 damage, or only 4 if they succeed their save test.
Apr 10, 2023 3:07 am
just a note : creating scrolls above 1 word will take precious resources, as noted in the cost, so you will need to craft them in cities or another place with appropriate facilities. IE you cant do this on the fly while out adventuring. 1 word scroll can be crafted as long as you have materials and time
Apr 10, 2023 3:22 am
Ooooooh okay that makes more sense. Thank you for defining the spells!
And yea that's fine, I like this magic system so far.

As for my last 2 word spell I'm thinking Tornado : (wind/speed) High speed winds centered on a point (the eye) in sight picks up and drops the targets within that area giving them fall damage.
Apr 10, 2023 3:39 am
OK

Just as an FYI and am new to this this system and have not have spell reader in my game yet so you are a bit of an experimental work in progress. Things may change as we play. The rulebook gives only basic guidelines so I will have to balance fun vs power.

They are on their way to rescue you. I will say you used up all your spell resources in the attempt to escape so other than the talisman and 3 scrolls you are unable to craft more until you can find more supplies. This will let me see how things work while you guys travel back to civilization and we can work from there.
Apr 10, 2023 3:42 am
FYI : you are not limited to mage type spells. You can do healing and nature, and spirit, and illusion. . .
Think about it. If you want a bit more utility or versatility by changing one of you words let me know in the next couple of days.
Apr 10, 2023 3:53 am
Sounds good. And yea I'm new to all this too so we'll see how things work in actual play.

So I understand what my character knows once she appears. Her timeline is during the Shattering? Would she call it the Shattering or just know it as war time?

I've caught up on the walkabout thread.
Apr 10, 2023 4:09 am
Rkia was born during the "Great War" in the "Age of the Dawn" now called the Dawn War and Dawn Age. Though not directing involved in the war the strain of the prolonged war was responsible for much of the troubles in her life. She experience the beginnings of the Shattering but has no idea what it was.

We will move to the rescue tomorrow. Welcome to the story :)
