Arthur Blackwood, an influential New York attorney, has contacted his cousin, Calvin Bradley, in a desperate plea to find evidence that will clear his good name. Eight months ago, Arthur and his wife, Rose, were vacationing at their summer cabin, near Whitehall, Washington County, New York. The cabin, with its peaceful view of Castle Creek, a tributary of the Mettawee River, was built by Arthur’s great-great-greatgrandfather, Milton Blackwood, in 1717. But the relaxing month-long vacation Arthur and Rose were enjoying ended in terror and tragedy. In the early hours of July 19th, 1928, Arthur was found wandering the North Ash Trail by John and Helen Turner. Arthur was disorientated, and his arms and chest were covered in blood. Rose could not be found and Arthur was arrested for the presumed murder of his wife. The murder trial begins on March 18th, 1929.

The New York State Police and the local Washington County Sheriff ’s Department have completed their investigation of the Blackwood cabin. All pertinent evidence was collected, photographed, and cataloged, and will be presented by the prosecution at Arthur’s upcoming trial. Arthur’s defense attorney (and business partner), Joseph Klein, is doing his best to keep Arthur out of the electric chair but with a lack of evidence to the contrary, Klein fears that Arthur will spend the rest of his days behind bars. Arthur’s mental faculties have returned, somewhat, and he’s begun babbling about how Rose was taken by "darkness." Society at large believes Arthur Blackwood to be a cold-blooded killer who should fry for his crime. It is down to you to discover whether Arthur is innocent or guilty.

Today is Saturday, March 2nd, 1929, eight months after Arthur Blackwood was arrested for the murder of his wife. As you enter the law office of Joseph Klein, you look upon a breathtaking view of the New York skyline. Klein bids you welcome and gestures for you to take a seat.

May 18, 2023 7:43 am
Sitting on Klein’s desk is a large box with a pair of strange wheels and a row of buttons on its face.

"Thank you for coming,"
Klein says, as he shakes your hands. "As you are aware, Arthur Blackwood is facing the electric chair. I’m trying to negotiate a lifetime prison sentence, but the outlook is bleak."

Klein places a hand on the strange box on his desk. "This is a magnetic voice recorder. I use it to record conversations with defendants, so you can hear their exact statement in their own words. These are brand new and the company that makes them is a client of ours, so we got access to this prototype." Klein presses a button and says, "Arthur has a message for you."
May 18, 2023 7:53 am
As the wheels begin to spin, you hear Arthur’s scratchy voice emanate from the box: "Cousin, please… you must help me. I can’t explain it… I never believed the stories for they were too fantastic to be real, but the Blackwood family line is both blessed and cursed! A genie lives in the cellar of the family cabin but to control it you must find my ring. I dropped it, I think, in the cellar! Please find my ring and prove to the police that the genie exists! Please, I implore you! Find my ring, for it is the only thing that can prove my innocence!"
May 18, 2023 7:55 am
Klein opens a manila folder and shows you a photograph of the cellar beneath the Blackwood cabin. It shows dark earthen walls, lined with shelves, and a white floor of crushed shells and gravel.
A large amount of blood is splashed and splattered across the floor.

"As you can see, there is no such thing as a genie," Klein says. "Poor Arthur has been under incredible stress over the last few years; he eventually snapped and butchered his wife."

Klein then gives you a key to the cabin and a letter granting you access to the property—should the local authorities want to know why you are there. "It’s only because I still love and respect Arthur that I am even entertaining his request to have you search the cellar for anything to clear his name. Good luck."
May 18, 2023 1:05 pm
"Excuse me, counsellor, I have but a few questions of mine own. First, when will I get to interview Mr. Blackwood myself? I must make my own assessment, you see. Second, and this may be a question for which you may wish to answer privately, when you say you "love and respect Arthur", to what form of love do you refer? Agape love as that of a friendship? Platonic love as that of a colleague? Or Eros as that of…? Well, you know"
Dr. Shepard pauses, blushing slightly, and continues,
"As I said, answer as it pleases you, here, now, or let us seek a private room. And then my final query: what was the murder weapon and has the poor woman’s body been recovered? I suppose that is two final questions, sir."
May 18, 2023 4:18 pm
Genie? Hoo boy, this guy's definitely loopy.

Reggie cocks an eyebrow when Shepard asks Klein to define his relationship with Blackwood, but says nothing. He's more interested in the answer to the question about the body.

He asks Klein if he can take a closer look at the cellar photograph.
May 18, 2023 6:03 pm
"We have been business partners for a long time and always good friends, no more than that I assure you. I know you psychologist types like to read relations into everything. Primarily your assessment will be on the cabin, as Arthur has requested. If I can get you an interview with him, it will be at the court's whim and out of my hands."

He hands the photo to Reginald,

"No murder weapon was found, but the absence of the body and the presence of blood was enough for the prosecution.."
May 18, 2023 6:33 pm
"Arthur doesn't have it in him to do this," Samuel eyes flick from one face to another, as if daring anyone to disagree. "Besides, I've seen men struggle after their first time killing a person. He wouldn't be confused, he'd be a wreck."

He pauses for the exchange between Joseph and their psychiatrist companion. "He didn't kill anyone, and there will be evidence to prove it. Perhaps not a...genie," he rolls his eyes briefly at the word. "But something. We'll find it."
May 18, 2023 8:29 pm
"Miss Jonson, Arthur would like you to capture this genie on film, if you can. He has faith you can provide evidence of this thing's existence. You will be paid regardless of the outcome, but he insists on your presence here."
May 18, 2023 8:57 pm
Reggie studies the photograph, looking for clues.

After Miss Johnson answers Klein, he asks him, "Did you ever witness Mr. and Mrs. Blackwood arguing?"
OOC:
Based on Reggie's knowledge of the law, does it make sense to him for Blackwood to be prosecuted for his wife's murder despite the absence of a body? In this case, no body was found, but bits of hair and nail were later found and DNA evidence ID'd the victim. Obviously that level of forensic science is not available here. Can they tell that the blood on Blackwood was even human and not animal?
May 18, 2023 9:40 pm
Nothing obvious stands out from the photo.
OOC:
Although obviously not a common situation, it seems like an open-and-shut case, with Arthur babbling about her being 'taken'. It's unlikely the blood could be identified, it would be assumed that Arthur hid the remains somewhere. Reggie would have certainly viewed it the same way as the arresting officers
May 18, 2023 9:50 pm
"I did not, as far as I knew, they were a happy couple. I see no motive here, but like I say, the pressure of work can be enough to break the strongest of men."
May 18, 2023 11:57 pm
"Without going into details—because I'm sure it's all confidential—can you tell me what sort of work Mr. Blackwood has been doing that had him so stressed out?"
May 19, 2023 3:22 am
Dr. Shepard makes a few notes in his pad and nods gratefully to the lawyer. Then, he says,
"I will be most eager to speak with Mr. Blackwood myself and alone. I work best under these conditions and will then provide a sound assessment of his mental status for your defense case. I assure you, my only interest is the one I’ve been secured to pursue. Thank you again for your assistance."

Calvin's done his best to transcribe the recorded message in his notebook. He's visibly excited following the mention of a genie.
OOC:
can I roll an occult check to see if I have any knowledge on genies? maybe stories from great grandma Blackwood? I'd also be interested in what I can recall of a family curse. Should that be a separate roll?
He will speak to Mr. Klein as we all begin to head for the door:
Should we all make our way to Whitehall separately then, or do you have a means to travel together? Or maybe some directions to the cabin? We have 16 days to photograph darkness, and I'd hate to be in the wrong spot. Additionally, would you have a photograph of the couple together? Arthur mentioned a ring and I'd love to know what it looks like.

OOC:
Go ahead and make an occult roll, Calvin. Additionally you can make an INT roll to see if you recall anything of a family curse.

Rolls are 1d100 . I may assign a hidden difficulty (hard or extreme)
May 19, 2023 2:58 pm
OOC:
I wanted to ask Klein if he knew of anyone that might have a reason to frame Blackwood for murder. I realize the crux of the story is to get to the cabin cellar, but I would think Reggie would want to take a more pragmatic approach (being skeptical about "genies" or other paranormal nonsense) to see if there were any co-workers who could offer any information.
May 19, 2023 3:06 pm
OOC:
We can safely say that Reggie established that no such enemy exists. Arthur is well-liked by co-workers and opposition counsels alike. Klein has requested you not speak to others in the office though, the more people hearing that the firm has hired investigators to follow a crackpot story about a genie, the more likely it is to get out to the press and at this stage, that won't help Arthur's case.
May 19, 2023 3:13 pm
OOC:
Fair enough. Thanks. :)

Next note of business: Can Reggie offer to drive everyone up to Whitehall in his car? Assuming you're allowing him to have one as per what I wrote up in his background.
May 19, 2023 6:49 pm
OOC:
Absolutely. In fact as you all have Credit ratings between 10 and 49, you all have access to your own reliable vehicle and can make your own way or carpool as you wish. (On the subject of Credit Rating, I notice one or two of you don't have it in your skill list, so would be grateful if you could add it,)
May 19, 2023 6:52 pm

Note Klein doesn't have any photos of the ring or the Blackwoods. Neither has he seen the ring so can offer no description of it.

Samuel is also good with carpooling if Reggie is offering. Fewer cars will attract less attention.
May 20, 2023 2:39 pm
Having set out from Klein's office, you have arrived and looked around the main rooms of Blackwood's cabin, a small one-story house and found nothing of relevance to the case.

https://i.imgur.com/WmR8BAv.png

You find a couple of lanterns in the kitchen which you take to provide light in the cellar.

You are now looking through the trapdoor into the cellar, where the police says Rose's murder took place.

While looking into the cellar from the open trap door in the parlor, your view is extremely limited. Light from the parlor spills through the hatch illuminating a ladder, some shelving and the white shell and gravel floor. You can make out that the shelves hold jars, small boxes and other knick-knacks. Everything is covered in a thick layer of dust. You also note that the cellar has no lighting, so you will need to use your own lanterns and flashlights. Large cobwebs hang everywhere.
OOC:

Decide who is carrying what and who is entering...
May 20, 2023 5:29 pm
Dr. Shepard will drive himself to the cabin. He brings a lantern, but will not be first.
May 20, 2023 9:51 pm
Reggie is happy to bring as many people in his car that want to carpool.

At the cabin, he carries a lantern and, being comfortable with crime scenes, leads the way into the cellar.
May 20, 2023 10:14 pm
OOC:
The stereotypical knowledge I have of Genies is that they are Arabic in origin, the creatures are incredibly powerful magic users, they offer 3 wishes to the person who releases them from captivity, and they often exploit the wording of the wish to screw people over.
I'd be interested to know if I recall anything about outsmarting them or defending against them.
Looking over the trapdoor and shining his flashlight into the cellar, Calvin will say to no one at all:

Everything looks so still, like it hasn't been disturbed in ages. It's hard to imagine a struggle that would leave a victim dead and an attacker covered in blood in a space so untouched. But we haven't found anything to tell us what happened leading up to the "event" up her. Seems all that's left is to go deeper.

Calvin looks really apprehensive as he tests out some weight on the first rung of the ladder. If things seem sturdy, he'll keep his flashlight on, put it in his jacket pocket, and descend the ladder with both hands on the side rails.
May 20, 2023 10:55 pm
My thoughts exactly, Calvin.

Reggie takes the lead and begins to descend the ladder, which seems sturdy, being bolted to the wall. He recognises the cellar from the photograph as the room where the murder allegedly took place. The floor, however, looks clean and white with no apparent signs of blood at all.

The ceiling is low within the cellar, only 7 feet high and as Reggie stops halfway down, sees the cellar is a large L shaped area. The walls are lined with shelves storing what looks like canned and jarred food, while small piles of junk are stored on the floor and against the walls.

https://i.imgur.com/h28g5xz.jpg

As he gets close to the bottom, he notices the ladder extends down and into the crushed shell and gravel floor, rather than resting on top of it.
May 21, 2023 2:03 am
Reggie finds the buried stairs odd. Instead of stepping directly on the floor in front of the stairs, he steps off to the right side. He scans the shelves with the lantern, looking for anything unusual there. And he keeps an eye out for a shovel.

Once a few others had descended the ladder, Dr. Shepard followed. He found the idea that Knick-knacks belonged on a cellar storage shelf a bit intriguing, so he begins to examine what nature of mementos have been collected by the Blackwoods.

Meanwhile, Jeffrey reaches the bottom of the ladder and moves over to the shelving to take a look at the nick nacks.

Looking through, he spots the blood splash that Reggie spotted but the walls are congested with useless junk.

As you failed the roll, you have a couple of options. You could use Luck, which removes points from your Luck pool to get a success. Alternatively, you could try to push the roll, meaning you do something extra, which you describe. The Push will give you another shot at the roll but a failure results in something bad happening. In this case, it might be something like moving things around to get a better look which may result in things falling causing noise and you to potentially get hurt. You cannot use Luck on a Pushed roll.

May 22, 2023 11:11 pm
After passing down the shovel, Samuel remains at the top of the ladder for a few minutes. On the one hand, the cellar doesn't seem particularly large, and he wants to give people room to look around without being in the way. On the other hand, however, while he doesn't point it out to anyone, a large amount of blood, a missing woman, and a murder suspect that none of them believe to be guilty all adds up to someone else with unfortunate intentions who might still be in the area.

So under the discrete facade of manners, he stands watch, periodically changing his stance to cast a wider field of vision.

"Something of interest then? That was quick. Don't suppose we're quite so lucky to have closed the case already though, hm?" Samuel calls down.

Gravel and shells, though not incredibly common, were generally used in cellars to drain moisture.
Martha moves further into the cellar, looking through the shelves to the south of the marks in the ground. She finds a hammer among a bucket of clutter.

Taking the shovel, Reggie sets about digging at the foot of the ladder. Moments after he begins digging, he uncovers a hidden layer of bones, mostly crushed.

Calvin believes the statement on the paper literally. But that worries him. He had hoped to clear Arthur of fault, and surely this evidence would support that, but how do they PROVE the existence of a demon or jinn? Maybe as a relative to the family, he could exert some control over the entity with the ring and Martha could photograph it?

Calvin closes everything back in the box except the painting. Reading the journal will have to wait.
Tucking the box under his arm, he shines his flashlight on the painting and begins to approach the party members with it.

"Listen everybody, I think finding this ring is really critical to the case..."

As the untouched bucket falls, Calvin adds:

...and to our safety."

Feeling nervous, Calvin will point his light toward the sound, and start to back toward the ladder.

"Martha, maybe keep your camera ready"
May 24, 2023 1:05 am
Martha walks over and picks up the bucket, turning it to have a look from all angles.
May 24, 2023 2:06 am
"Careful down there!" Samuel calls down at the loud noise, sounding more like a concerned father than and irritated investigator. "Did you say bones? Can't tell much from here, but even if they are, surely they aren't from Rose. Not this quickly..." it's merely conjuncture, of course. It's not impossible for it to be Rose, though it would certainly raise a myriad of new concerns if it were.

To Martha: "What did you smell?"

In response to her stating that things are "just falling off of the shelves" he has a look at the walls and ceiling where he's at to see if how sound the structure looks to his untrained eye. This place isn't going to come down on us, is it?
May 24, 2023 5:34 pm
Hearing Reggie's question, Calvin reluctantly pulls his eyes away from that dark corner. The fact that Martha came out unfazed doesn't stop him being apprehensive in the slightest.

There are two numbers to be aware of with Sanity.
If you lose 5 or more in a single event, you risk Temporary Insanity
If you lose 1/5 of your starting sanity in a single day, you risk indefinite insanity.
There will be a thread where I keep track for you, but in the normal course of a game, you should keep track of these and inform your keeper when you hit those thresholds.

The mild-mannered psychologist, after having turned the bone fragment over in his hands, finally realizes its genus and species. His gaze freezes over as the implications cause his mind to reel. Then, quite abruptly, he sinks to his knees and digs his hands into the gravel and shell floor cover. He wimpers and mutters to none in particular,
"Death is near to us all and will claim its next victim before this is over."

He rises and brushes himself off, returning no gazes and commencing to write in his field notes.

So a bout of madness occurs when you either lose 5 points in one go , resulting in temporary insanity ( lasting 1d10 rounds) or when an investigator loses 1/5 of their sanity in a game day ( lasting 1d10 hours). When losing less than that there is the initial reaction (for one round) but you are free to act normally afterwards as you see fit.

Since Calvin was able to see the flashlight beam was ineffectual, but the flames seem to be doing something, he'll shout up to the Cabin level:

"We need fire! Quick!"

He'll keep his attention on the ground just this side of the creature. He can't stand to look at it, but he wants to know if it moves closer. Without diverting his gaze, Calvin will fumble around on the shelf behind him and throw the first thing his hands blindly land on.

The goal would be to pepper the creature with projectiles so that maybe it would be distracted enough to leave Reggie and Martha alone.

Edit following my failed throw: I'd like to push my luck and see if I can do better.

Dr. Shepard hears the plea for fire from below. He looks around the room for something useful. He grabs the box of matches from the mantle and an armful of the old newsprint stacked next to the fireplace. He went to the cellar door and dropped them down.
"Perhaps this will help. Whatever is going on down there? Sounds like a scuffle."

It appears that the Blackwood family has been telling a fantastic story about some curse of the daemonic type. And now, as my colleagues subject themselves to its influence, it appears they are inducing hallucinations that are so grippingly realistic that they are physically fighting them in the cellar below.
In my professional opinion, this seems likely to have been the scenario that led Blackwood to murder his wife in cold blood while maintaining that it was not himself who committed the crime.
I believe that I have arrived at this conclusion rather more quickly than expected and welcome the end of this investigation.
However, as I am at the mercy of others for transport, I shall wait out the impact of these hallucinations.

Jun 23, 2023 11:38 pm
Seeing Martha appear on the stair filled Dr. Shepard with a strange feeling. Possibly remorse at not believing that what was occurring was actually real. Her wounds tell another story. He helps her at the top and leads her to the chair he had used to recover. He offered his handkerchief to her.
Jun 24, 2023 4:38 pm
Knowing the creature needs to be bound, and recalling the ritual takes "blood tainted by the sabith rites", Calvin will try to recall anything occult he may have read that could guide him. Knowing the power of blood, especially given that this creature seems tied to the family line, Calvin recalls the words of an incantation of John Dee. Taking a sharp piece of shell, he draws it across his palm, dripping the blood onto the sigil. It flares and steams, and Calvin's words turn to shouts, as he commands the creature to return to its prison. The thing is silently dragged across the cellar, shrinking as it does, the black cloud hovering above the sigil, waiting.

With the creature safely tethered to its prison, you emerge from the cellar. With the evidence you gathered, including the rounded piece of bones that turns out to be a piece of Rose's skull, and the sigil, it casts doubt on the case against Arthur Blackwood. The bones found in the cellar show signs of an animal attack and the sigil itself suggests a third party involved, perhaps cultists.

None of you leave that place unscathed and for some the scars last for years and your eyes have been opened to a deeper understanding of the world around you.
Rewards:

Finding the skull +1d4 sanity
Trapping the creature +1d6 sanity

You can also roll against each skills successfully used. If you roll over, gain 1d10

Calvin - Occult
Spot Hidden
English Language

Reggie - Spot Hidden

Martha - Brawl

Samuel - First Aid

Jeffrey - Medicine

Also, Martha has gained 5 Cthulhu Mythos points, as entering a Bout of Madness for the first time grants insight to the world beyond.

You’re welcome. Feel free to make your improvement rolls here, Calvin might have more tales to tell.

Also, as I run these one shots for the Cult of Chaos, I welcome any feedback of your experience. Did you enjoy it? Would you play CoC again?

OOC:
So it’s done then? I was so invested in it that I had to play my character SO differently than I would play any fantasy PC. It was a good struggle to not always do the "right thing" or "heroic thing". I learned much as a big fan of RPGs. And, for my first time playing in the Cthulhu mythos, you ran a fantastic game! Your gentle nudging was never railroading. Choice always felt alive…. as did consequence :-/ ;)
OOC:
So, yes, I’ll play CoC again.

I loved Jeffrey’s quiet narration from the safety of the cabin above. Note doing the heroic thing usually ends in character death or madness, or both!

I've got mixed feelings. It was great sometimes; sometimes it wasn't. I felt like it was the first day of swimming lessons, and we were unceremoniously dumped into the deep end and told to start swimming.

I'm surprised that it ended quite so suddenly. I was preparing for our next course of action, but we were, in fact, done.

I appreciate the opportunity to play CoC, but I'm not sure that it's a fit for me.

The one shots are very short and usually consist of a little more research first than on this scenario. I personally prefer longer form campaigns but the thing about CoC is that encounters usually end in death or madness so avoiding direct combat is always the best solution. I’m glad you stuck around and have it your best shot.

Yeah, I get that from reading the stories. The beast in the cellar forced (some of) us into combat when it went after Martha and blocked our escape. It is what it is. Fortunately, Calvin figured out what to do.

Incidentally, it never came into play, but Dr Jeffrey is also a distant descendant of the Blackwood line. Had he entered the cellar fully, there might have been a different ending!

Precisely why he didn’t. The curse was the butt of many jokes as well as the source of many cautionary tales from his childhood.
