You know the deal. All the non-game chit-chat.

To start... some light reading, if you need it.

Core Rulebook
Vampire the Requiem (Core)
Lots of books...

And, a character sheet. It's not perfect, but it was made as a general purpose sheet.

So, let's talk about character... what do you want to play? What concepts appeal?
May 23, 2023 3:43 pm
Wow. This is a lot of reading. The general system is coming back to me, with the dots representing the dice pool. That's pretty straightforward. The exploding 10 is pretty straightforward.

Guess I'm going to need to wrap my head around the setting a little bit. Is the world aware of the vampire threat. Are they still masquerading? That was the time frame I think when I played before it was all very hidden, and only Elite government entities were aware and kind of hunting. That in the occult or various ancient factions and tribes that have evolved into vampire hunters and werewolf hunters.

Ultimately, I would love to play a vampire masquerading as a police detective or something like that. He might have a Dexter motive, vigilante Justice type of mode, but that will only work if there's a relative assurity that he can remain undetected. If it's well known that various entities exist that use magic or charms or some other method to identify a vampire in plain sight, and I'm not sure that's a safe option.
May 23, 2023 5:40 pm
The supernatural world still goes to great lengths to stay hidden. Largely even from each other. It's not uncommon for most supernaturals to not be entirely sure what else is in the shadows.

The NWoD was a reboot of the system and setting. Things changed mechanically, but there were some big changes lore-wise.

The biggest, is by and large they did away with it.

Officially? There was no Cain. All vampires, as they age, are drawn to torpor. Torpor brings with it visions and dreams (that are often nonsensical, in the way that dreams tend to be), but the fog of ages makes it so after awakening you cannot even trust your memories. No one knows where or how the curse of vampirism started.

They went to great lengths to make it so the games were what each individual table made of them.

I like the concept. Have you considered how you handle not being available during the day? I know police detectives can be called to work any hour of the day or night, but most meetings, court appearances, and other job related activities would happen during daytime hours.
May 23, 2023 11:10 pm
MaJunior says:

In the old system, you could pick a advantage that allowed you to be a daywalker. Granted you needed an equally powerful disadvantage, but you used to be able to custom build your vampire to overcome some of the traditional weaknesses, or you could build it to be just like the traditional.

If all that has changed, then I'm not sure how to get around that. I might think about a different profession, maybe a private investigator instead, who can pick and choose their own hours..
May 23, 2023 11:44 pm
There are still merits and flaws, but nothing that I know of that's so potent as to allow a Vampire to go all Blade.

Flaws are a bit different as well, in that they grant extra XP in a session when they come into play and hinder you somehow.

A PI could work, being allowed to run your own hours. At some point, ghouling a detective is a possibility to grant you an "in" at the precinct.

I'm just kinda spitballin' here.
May 23, 2023 11:47 pm
Perfect. Let's just do that then. I'm still trying to read through the books, between other things.

"light reading" they say. Hahaha.

Let me know what you need next, and I'll gladly start building a character or whatever..
May 23, 2023 11:53 pm
Start with the blue book. (Or at least keep it handy.) It's the base rules all the other systems build from.

A lot changed with Vampire, so I don't know if you want to bounce questions off of me or if I should just butt out and let you do your thing.

Happy to help, but don't want to overstep.
May 23, 2023 11:58 pm
You're definitely not overstepping. I would run a pre-gen, now that we've discussed the basics. I don't care. I'm better at riding a backstory then muddling through rules to get the character build right. Quite frankly I'm not a min/max OPer either so I can care less about trying to custom build a mechanically designed character. I've had just as much fun showing up at conventions, grabbing a random character with a horribly mismatched set of skills and having fun with it.

So never feel like you're stepping on my toes. I'm just thrilled to be getting into a game, and this genre is wonderful. Sure I'll have tons of questions..

What's the game starts, as long as I know how and when you want me to make rolls, The rest is just dialogue and roleplay. It's like I used to tell people when I would teach how to play the game. Don't worry about the character sheet, just tell me what it is you want to do, and if it requires a skill or a role I'll let you know.

Granted, I'm sure in PbP you prefer us to take the initiative and make the rolls ahead of time when possible, as it would save time but I'm very available so we can make it work either way.
May 24, 2023 12:10 am
Rolling ahead of time in this system can be problematic. So, it has a set number for success - 8.

Modifiers change the number of dice you roll. So you will rarely roll your base dice pool. You may have 3 wits and 3 investigation, but you could be at -5 dice because it's pitch black out, leaving you just 1 dice to roll.

Flipside, maybe you're in a well lit and spotless room giving you a +3 bonus, so you have 9 dice.

If I ask for a roll, I'll always include the circumstantial modifier and mention what specialties may factor in. If you suggest a roll, you can either suggest it and wait for modifiers, or you can roll and I can remove dice starting at the right side of your string of numbers to balance out the penalty.
May 24, 2023 11:47 am
Awesome, i prefer it when the GM (err.. Storyteller) prompts the roll, especially in dice pool games. too many variables...

So what next? Is there a character sheet I need to fill out, then link it to this forum? I have yet to start a game on this site but I've seen that functionality here.
May 24, 2023 1:31 pm
Yep, there's a character sheet you can click on in the same post with links to .pdfs.

Since they didn't really have a sheet for the NWoD setting, we made a general purpose one. It's set up to build a normal human, and the bottom has a dropdown box where you can add template information.

The good news is, it's customizable for any splat. The bad news is, there's some extra typing.
May 24, 2023 3:31 pm
Okay I found it. It wasn't under the header of character sheet, it just said [ + ] New World of Darkness

That's what confused me. It is quite lengthy. I had not anticipated quite the character building necessity, so I'll have to do a bunch more reading or else I'll never fill this in properly.

Going to rush or there's a deadline let me know. Want to get started as soon as possible so it's high on my list things to do, but real life sometimes gets in the way.

Playing is hard, you read a few paragraphs You write a few paragraphs and move on... send

Session zero stuff takes a while. So... Working on it
May 24, 2023 5:32 pm
Okay, just to make sure I understand this..

Each column, mental, physical, social in the attributes get assigned five dots, four dots and three dots .. depending on which column I want to make primary, secondary, tertiary.

Now when I get the skills, they are also organized under mental, physical and social, and I get more points for the primary, but does the primary category I use here which gets 11 dots have to be the same primary as I picked in attributes.

For instance if I picked the physical to be my primary attribute, and assigned five dots in that column. Do my skills, which I pick to be primary, also have to be in the physical column or can I mix it up. Can I choose to put my 11 dots of skills in social even though I only put three dots in the attributes?

So, there's no real deadline. Whenever we're ready, we can roll.

The sheet looks sort of imposing, but it's not really that much... the BBCode stuff makes it seem bigger than it is. The .pdf of the book has a sheet in back, if you want to sort of cross-reference.

You can reprioritize between attributes and skills. Making Physical attributes primary has zero bearing on how you prioritize skills. Mix and match as you see fit.
May 24, 2023 6:05 pm
Awesome. I really don't want to max out, and there are so few dots to use in the attributes, I kind of hope to make up for that in the skills. Sure that means he'll be more diverse and less OP, but that's exactly the way I prefer it ... especially if he's going to be a PI. The vampire dictates a certain amount of physical prowess, but the PI would be more social and intuitive so I'll make that up in the skills.

Thanks for the flexibility. I'm working through it. A lot of it's coming back to me. I'm excited to get started though. I suspect I'll have the character finished in 24 hours or less.
May 24, 2023 6:15 pm
Awesome! Once you have the base character figured out, we can figure out Vampire-centric questions. Lol
May 24, 2023 10:31 pm
Okay, I'm getting a little confused with the advantages, merits, and flaws...

Advantages. It looks like you don't pick any of them, but you should probably list all of them on your character sheet and add up what they equal. DEFENSE is Dex or Wits, whichever is higher. So just list it. HEALTH is stamina + size, etc. The idea is to just calculate them, and make sure their present on the sheet so you have easy reference, right?

Merits, I can't find any where it says how many to pick? How many dots do you have? Clearly if something has a prerequisite, you may not be able to take it but if you have the prereq it or if no prerequisite is listed ... why wouldn't you take them all? Unless of course everyone you pick has a consequence.

That brings me to FLAWS, which if I recall in the original VtM, every dot in merit had to be offset by flaws. As your character gained experience, your merits would increase but your flaws would usually stay the same, unless you got a new one in gameplay. Technically you would improve the balance. I see flaws on the character sheet, but really have had trouble finding any mention of them in either of the red or blue book.

Defense is lower of Dexterity or Wits, but otherwise you're correct. Calculate them out and note them, so you have easy reference.

Blue Book, p. 34-35 have sort of a cheat sheet. It's goodnfor reference.

You get 7 points of Merits.

(Merits in this edition sort of are a combination of the old system's merits AND backgrounds.)

Flaws don't give you anything up front this time around. You get an extra XP each session where your flaw comes into play in a meaningful way -- hindering you somehow.
May 24, 2023 11:13 pm
So, Since I couldn't find any information on flaws. Is there not a list of them? You just pick arbitrary things and fill them in the blanks...???

Flaw 1. Gambling addiction/Texas Hold'em
Flaw 2. Distrusts/abhors all organized religion
Flaw 3. Vigilante compulsion, vampire justice.
May 25, 2023 12:17 am
Blue book, p. 217-219 should cover flaws. Very tail end of the book.
May 25, 2023 12:45 am
I'm so sorry for missing these things and pestering you with all these questions. In my desire to rush this, I'm clearly skimming past things. Searching the PDF isn't working. Lol

Anyway, thank you for your patience... It says flaws are at storyteller discretion, and I get only one... for now, so here are my preferences.

First: Amnesia. He can't recall anything prior to his turning. He rembers how to read and write, drive, ride a bike, academics, etc... but no memory of where or how he learned those things. Most of his specific and specialized skills have been garnered since then.

Second: Forgetful. Has to write things down constantly. Horrible memory, especially proper names, specific details. Slows him down a lot, as he has to take notes and draw sketches.

Third: Addiction: Gambling. Cards, Poker predominantly, but prone to make bets on mundane things, as if a habit. It makes it difficult for him to turn down a dare, if a bet is involved.

No worries! I know it's a lot to take in. It's familiar, but totally different.

Fortunately, while I may not be a living encyclopedia for the NWoD setting, it IS a setting I'm quite comfortable with so most things either I know, or I know where to find.

As for flaws... the third is probably the easiest overall. The second I would worry might be too much of a hindrance, especially for a PI. If you wanted to run with it, I might suggest limiting it to names, or numbers, or something a bit more focused.

That said, both of them could be more a matter of personality traits. Not severe enough to truly hinder you, but still noticeable.

The amnesia approach is interesting. The game will start a bit before your embrace, so having it be a side effect of the embrace would work fine. You'll also have a very clear line of demarcation between your old life and your new.

It's entirely up to you though, we can roll with any of them.
May 25, 2023 2:21 am
Ok, i think im ready for you to look at the character, soI submitted. I'm hoping we can still work on it after that.

The amnesia sounds fine to me, but the goal is to be the vigilanti justice weilding PI after the embrace. So, maybe his skillsets, virtues vices, etc... are the same before and after, he just doesn't really recall ... Why.

Maybe he is a cop before, and be omes the PI after, not only because of the day vs. night issue, but his instincts ... having been a cop remain intinctual.

I gave him 3 in resources, so, maybe that applies only after the embrace. He's not just a PI after, but a really good one, having gained the benefits of his embrace to improve his performance. Meanwhile, he secured a few big contracts with good payouts, or an inheritance... which of course he has no idea who it came from, because he doesn't remember his kin. (May need your creative ideas for that one)

Which brings me to equipment... Can I only buy one item worth three dots? He would want surveillance, nightvision, kinds of stuff synonmous woth being a PI.. if he can afford them.
May 25, 2023 2:51 pm
Character looks good, I dig it.

I made one change, and that's your attributes. Each one starts with 1 dot, so if you put 1 dot in, say, Intelligence... you actually have a 2. (I also recalced the derived statistics like speed and defense.)

BTW, a score of 2 in an attribute or skill is considered perfectly average or "base professional level." Just for reference.

As for amnesia, what you suggested works... it didn't change who he was, his life before embrace is just a blank slate for him. Maybe some early childhood memories from time to time (if you're interested in finding out who you were as part of your character arc, some childhood memories might be good to have).

That said...

Your game, as mentioned, is starting back in the 70s. We're going to hit a few stops along the way as we bringing you up to current times. The current story... is a zombie apocalypse of unknown origin. The PCs in the game you'll crossover with were on an airplane when it happened, so they were kept safe purely by dumb luck. But they landed, and are finding out everything went to shit.
May 25, 2023 2:57 pm
Okay, awesome. I appreciate you fixing it all. I'm good to go whwn you are.
May 25, 2023 3:45 pm
Sounds good. I should have a game post up tonight.
May 26, 2023 6:40 pm
Heads up. I have 8 hours of travel from Florida to Tennessee tomorrow to pick up my daughter, only to turn around and do another 8 hours back. So I'll be on the road all day but stopping frequently for gas, etc and I'll post when I stop. Just letting you know that my availability will be gappy tomorrow
May 27, 2023 2:16 am
No worries! I never dreamed today would go like it did for me, but I spent all day working in the direct sun. So hot I tried to plug my phone in and it overheated in under a minute. 🤷

Travel safe! Don't worry about posting. Don't feel obligated. The 3 posts a day was just a general pace. We will both have days where we just aren't able to post. I'm not stressed over exceptions, so please don't be either.
May 27, 2023 2:19 am
Wwll rest up, feel better.

Meantiime, Im happy to post a few times tomorrow. Tht much driving, i' ll be looking forward to the stops and the RP when I do.

Any thought on which of the five Clans you want to join?
May 28, 2023 8:41 pm
Oops. I skimmed over that part. Focusing on the scores and character sheet. Reviewing...
May 28, 2023 8:51 pm
Mekhet kind of seems to fit best.
May 28, 2023 9:05 pm
I had a hunch. Lol

Just so you are aware, the clan weakness is that they take additional damage from fire and sunlight.

That's not a reason to *not* play them, just keep that in mind.
May 28, 2023 11:10 pm
Ya, I saw that but they still seem to be the best fit. Avoid both. Check!
Jun 3, 2023 1:50 pm
I'm taking the family to an arcade/ bowling Alley today...., so my participation may be a little sporadic for the next half day. I'll keep checking on things, but it won't be as often as usual.

okay,.. im off here. severe thunderstorms rolling through including a tornado watch, it looks like it's going to be a doozy. May lose power & internet any second. Chat with y'all tomorrow assuming we still have a starlink attached to the house in the morning. lol

Lol Just batten down the hatches and be safe man.
Jun 20, 2023 6:59 pm
Lol We did the "both typing at the same time" thing again.

I did delete your last post, only because you weren't in any position to dart anywhere. First chapter is over... I'll get the next one up later today.

For the moment, I think I have to do some work.
Jun 20, 2023 11:36 pm
OOC:
awesome. Loving it
Jun 20, 2023 11:52 pm
Glad to hear it!!

Amnesia will be in full effect in the game moving forward. I have to run down applying the Vampire template to your character, and make sure I don't forget anything.
Jun 21, 2023 12:58 am
OOC:
No worries... Just let me know how far back or what he does or does not remember. If he remembers any of his career? Does he remember the events leading up to the embrace? Do your prefer that his skills are just instinctual leftovers from his previous life and he has no idea where he's garnered them?
Jun 21, 2023 2:13 pm
That's really up to you. It's your flaw.

Since flaws grant XP when they hinder you in some meaningful way, how complete or severe it is will likely have some bearing on how often it comes up. That said, you only need it to come up once in a "chapter" to get the 1 xp.

(The system -- at least RAW -- limits it to 1 xp per chapter, to keep players from having a flaw that always comes up and thus swimming in XP.)

Alright, adding the Vampire template...

Clan is Mekhet.

Favored Attribute: +1 dot in Intelligence or Wits

Disciplines: 3 dots, divided as you want between Auspex, Celerity, and Obfuscate.

Merits: I'll give you 4 dots, of which at least 3 are to be spent on Vampire-specific merits -- including Haven, Herd, and Status (although Covenant status will be limited to 1 dot).
- There are other vampire-specific merits, and you might look up things specific to the Mekhet or your Covenant (if you decide on one).

(I have most of the books, so if you have something in mind you can ask and I can see if there's anything that fits. Or you can .pdf hunt. Lol)

Blood Potency is set to 1.

You can also sacrifice a dot of Humanity for 5 xp to spend as you wish. You can do this twice, for a total of 10. It is completely optional however, and losing humanity can result in derangements. Your choice.

Edit: If it worked, I edited the template part of your sheet to add some headers and basic information. You should have your type (vampire), clan (Mekhet), power stat (blood potency), three clan disciplines, and a few other things filled in. Hopefully.
Jun 21, 2023 3:12 pm
OOC:
Okay, I've tried to fill it out.

I wasn't sure if any of them could be zeros and if not then ...is there a default of one in each of them and I'm just adding extras?
Jun 21, 2023 3:31 pm
The only thing that defaults to 1 as a minimum are the 9 stats. Anything else can be zero.

For status... which Covenant are you joining? (Your Sire is a Carthian, if it matters.)

As for Haven, there are three categories: Size, Security, and Location. What is your dot in?

Also, it doesn't look like you added your favored attribute point.
Jun 21, 2023 3:58 pm
OOC:
Okay. I think it's fixed now.

The covenant was difficult to pick, but I think the Carthian is going to be the one I like most. Not anything really to do with the sire, but that's a good convenience probably. I suppose that can make things harder too.

Took my point in which to bump it up to four.

Put the Haven point in security
Jun 21, 2023 4:22 pm
Looks good!

I will point out each category of the Haven merit is rated 1 to 5, meaning you can technically have 15 dots in haven at its max. For now, I'm going to count your two dots of security as part of your Sire's haven (since the Haven merit can be pooled, with members of a coterie each contributing).

Plus, she's not exactly letting you out on your own yet, until she feels you're fully educated.
Jun 22, 2023 1:51 pm
OOC:
Sounds good. i envision him giving a lot of thougt to escape routes and countermeasures... Not only in the haven as a whole, the shared space, but hos personal space... Assuming hem ight have provate quatlrters within the larger. He is an overthiker, in spare time, running through scenarios in his head. if *this* happened, he would go here and do this. But of *this* hapoened, he would do thst ... One day when he has his own place he will probably set traps and escape routes.
Jun 22, 2023 4:50 pm
Traps and escape routes are perfect ways to justify Haven Security dots, so that works just fine.

If -- and only if -- you want some .pdfs...
Clan Mekhet

Carthian Movement

Working on putting together sort of a primer on everything Vlax would have been taught during his first decade under her thumb. Don't know why I didn't think of it before yesterday, but here we are.

Oh well... Clearly... addicted to gaming

Jun 27, 2023 3:32 pm
As you can see... lots of typing. Plus, I suck at formatting but I'm working on that. Lol

I did most of the city building over the weekend... now it's just putting pen to paper.
Jun 27, 2023 3:45 pm
OOC:
Oh wow. That's a lot of good reading I'm sure. I'll try to get on it as soon as I can.

I tried to start reading through the other documents you sent... I suppose I should call them books not documents.

The typeset iland formatting makes them really hard to read on PDF especially if it's on my phone. They may wind up being more reference than a full read...
Jun 27, 2023 4:26 pm
I always make due on my phone. I used to have them all on a tablet dedicated to RPG .pdfs (and a few app games).

I mean, I still have that, but I'm rarely on it and I don't take it to work. I work for a general contractor, and it would get absolutely wrecked. There's also no way to use it discretely. Lol

That said... if you have them, I can give you page numbers for anything specific. There's always some mechanics included -- Bloodlines, merits, whatever. Also, good thematic knowledge. Skimming them should give you the gist though.

Got the next chapter started, but I want to finish up more of the primer before we get too deep into Chapter 2. Since it takes place in Court, a fair bit of the info is relevant. You're free to post though, since it starts with you and Kim getting ready.
Jun 30, 2023 2:53 pm
Quick Q: Have you read the "City Primer" at all? Particularly the Elysium subsection? Asking, because some of it is about to become very relevant. Lol
Jun 30, 2023 3:52 pm
OOC:
Yes I read through all of those tabs once. I'll probably redo it all again...

If I recall the last one didn't have anything in it when you open the plus sign.
Jun 30, 2023 8:24 pm
The last one still doesn't.

It's the Elysium tab that'll be relevant.
