I set this thread up seperate from OOC to focus on rules questions and clarifications in particular. Any rules questions can be asked here, but let's keep any other chatter in the OOC.
Things to remember:
1. A success is 8 or higher on a d10.
2. Most actions only require a simple success (that is, just one success) to succeed.
3. 5 successes or more is generally considered an exceptional success. This usually gives an even better result (if possible). Note that sometimes extra successes are their own reward -- combat is the most notable example of that.
4. Always reroll 10s. If you reroll a 10 and get a 10... always reroll 10s. (Even on a chance die!)
5. Sometimes you can also reroll 9s, or even 8s.
6. If your dice pool is reduced to zero, you still have a "chance die," but in that case only a roll of 10 is a success. A roll of a 1 on a chance die is especially bad... think of it as a critical failure.
7. Alright, so this is probably the big one.
(It's the one part of the system I wondered about since we're playing on a PbP forum.)
What that means, is you will rarely just roll your unmodified dice pool. Most of the time, you will have fewer dice due to a penalty... or more dice, due to bonus. Many of these are situational.
The most common example is combat.
You roll your dice pool, penalized by your opponent's defense and/or armor. Any successes are damage.
But bonuses and penalties apply to pretty much any roll.
Persuasion? Could be easier (they think you're hot, they're under the influence of drugs or alcohol making them more susceptible to suggestion, you bribe them) or harder (they're racist, you just shot their dog, your jersey is for their team's rival.
Perception? Could be easier (binoculars, crystal clear day, magical enhancement), or harder (dark, foggy, someone threw pocket sand in your face, you got pepper sprayed).
Crafts? Could be easier (recipe or manual, extra tools, help of someone skilled in your crafting specialty) or harder (you have a leatherman and a hammer, you think you saw the recipe on TV once, your "help" doesn't know what they say they do, ingredients expired).
What that means is either you'll ask to make a roll or I'll ask you to make a perticular roll, but I have to give you those modifiers before you roll.
That said, I know we tend to roll automatically. If that happens, what I'm going to try is just removing a number of dice equal to the penalty, from the right-most and moving to left.
Does that sound acceptible?
