Hey all, excited to be here! I run OSE for a live group, and it's a blast! In addition, I've recently listened to the Hobbit and am in the middle of the Silmarillion and starting the RotK audiobook. Looking forward to some dwarfy action!

For the character creation, how flexible are we on equipment? I love buying war dogs, but I think they're in the advanced fantasy book.
Jun 14, 2023 1:55 pm
Material from Advanced I'll handle case-by-case. I don't have a copy of Advanced so will rely on players being able to quote the rules.

War dogs seem pretty straightforward, so if you can post the rules for them here I'm happy to allow them.
Jun 14, 2023 4:09 pm
All right. I'm either looking at the Runesmith (magic-user) or Scout (halfling). I'd be happy either way! I just rolled low for money, so I'm not gonna be buying any armor.
Jun 14, 2023 4:57 pm
I'm going to go Cleric, unless anyone else wants to jump in. I rolled fairly low for my stats, but at least I rolled OK for gold, so I have some chainmail.. I've never rolled for stats or gold/starting equipment. I've always used point-buys. It's kinda fun having to make compromises. And coming from 5e, my impression is that stats don't matter that much in this system. There aren't any skills or spell-attack bonuses or anything (right?).

That's right, ability scores do have a much lower impact in this game than in 5e. There' no spell attack bonus, and only thieves have skill rolls (which aren't improved by stats anyway). With the rules we are using, a Rune-smith (magic-user) with 10 Int will know 50% of the spell list, which ought to make them perfectly functional. A fighter with 10 Str and Dex is only marginally less effective than one with 14 in each. Clever thinking and good luck with the dice are much bigger factors than ability scores.

Rolling for stats, spells, and wealth can take your characters in unexpected directions that make them really memorable. You might end up deciding to play a class, or take an approach you've never considered before.
Jun 15, 2023 6:45 am
I rolled much better than average. I'm going for Delver.

Are we using Variable Weapon damage?

Yes, we will use variable weapon damage.
Jun 16, 2023 4:12 pm
I've made a post clarifying the house and optional rules we'll be using. I'll update this from time to time as necessary.

I'm aiming to get the game rolling next week. If anyone has questions on character creation or is stuck on something, just give me a yell either here or via PM.

I see cowleyc is looking at a Rune-smith or Scout, fnlyre at a Cleric and rpgventurer at a Delver. @DungeonCat any thoughts yet on what you'd like to play?
Jun 16, 2023 9:02 pm
Do Delvers get all the languages listed in the class?
Jun 17, 2023 12:09 am
I would like to be a fighter
Jun 17, 2023 2:01 am
Hello everyone! Excited to get started! I would be down for playing a Thief or another Fighter to set up a nice frontline.

Yes they do.

For those who are new to GamersPlane, once you've filled in your character sheet you'll need to submit it to the game, so that I can see and approve it.

You can do that via this link:
https://gamersplane.com/games/4082/

I see a couple of characters already submitted, fnlyre's cleric Sen Malor and Gilkarash's thief Ulrich Bronzeheart.

Once everyone has submitted a character we can start the game.
Jun 18, 2023 6:05 am
Is there a way to associate a character picture to the custom template?
Jun 18, 2023 11:01 am
When you click on the character, and click edit (pencil icon at the top right), there should be an avatar option at the top right, across from 'Character Name'.

You should be on a url like: https://gamersplane.com/characters/custom/[bunch of numbers]/edit/

(This is how it appears to me on desktop, could be different on mobile).
Jun 19, 2023 7:21 am
We almost ready to go!

Once @rpgventurer and @Kragen have submitted their character sheets, the game can start.

In the meantime I've posted a Prologue to set the stage. The first game post will put the party on the mountain near the dungeon entrance.

Have submitted my character sheet.

What's the lighting situation in here? I know the door will be letting in some light but I wasn't sure about the rest.

It's very dark.

The door opens into a big space, which is only lit by the two braziers on the end of the chasm. They give enough light to see the end of the bridge and two shadowy shapes standing there.

There's enough light coming through the door for Gyrmmal to see the near end of the bridge as well.

That's probably a good idea!

No worries, thanks for posting the stats. I'm going to treat the dog like a special type of retainer – it will generally do what you want but obvious ill-treatment or very frightening situations may pose problems.

I'll leave this for the players to work out. I don't think it's absolutely necessary, but if you all agree to have one that's completely fine.

If there's interest, I can setup a Discord server for the game which might be helpful for discussing things.

Alright so what are we planning. I was under the impression that there is basically just a bridge. Is there anything else on this side of the bridge? Does my lantern illuminate anything?
Jun 24, 2023 2:14 pm
I felt like if we tried to spend time intricately investigating this room we would alert the humans anyway. Only the delvers have dark vision to search around without turning on a light source so the rest of us would still alert them if we tried.

The ledge by the doorway is about 10 feet long and extends to the side walls.

Then there is the bridge, about 30 feet long.

You can't see anything else that is significant.
Jun 25, 2023 10:20 pm
So has Ghardak ignored the humans at this point? I think a little clarification on who is actually doing what would be helpful.
Jun 27, 2023 3:29 am
Yeah ignoring the humans to work on the door.

Sorry, but where is the iron door on the map? I am not sure where the ogre is and who is near him.

I prefer to try to fool the ogre first. What if someone tries to convince the Great Ulfe that the orcs were the problem and our party is taking care of them as a favor to him? Gromli's CHA is 8 so he's probably not the best spokesman.

Just south of the D in Dwarves. Sen Malor, bringing up the rear of the dwarves in the corridor, is the closest PC (basically right in front of the Great Ulfe and the two wolves).
Jul 12, 2023 5:14 pm
I prefer not to fight the ogre and two wolves, but if no one has a story that the ogre will believe, I think we should use the surprise round to either attack or run retreat.
Jul 12, 2023 6:22 pm
Agreed. We could retreat to a chokepoint so that either the wolves or orge can get to us.
Jul 12, 2023 9:04 pm
Proposed plan 1: If no one has a way to convince the ogre we're not the enemy, the party retreats back to the room with the sleeping/dead orcs. They hold the door against the wolves and ogre and open it enough to let one wolf in, then hold it closed again until the wolf is dead. We repeat with the second wolf, then we fight the ogre. I don't know if we can hold the door against the ogre the whole time.

Does anyone else see other possible chokepoints on the map besides the door?

@Robago, how big is each square on the map? I assume wolves are faster than dwarves' movement of 60 feet, so this plan assumes the dwarves can make it through the door before the wolves move.

Proposed plan 2: The party retreats out of the dungeon completely, waits an hour, then returns. We set a trap (such as flaming oil) outside of the ogre's door, then call him out.

Squares are 5 feet.

PC movement in combat time ranges from 20 ft (heavily armoured) to 40 ft (unarmoured).

PCs can 'run' at their full movement rate (60 / 90 / 120), which takes up their whole turn (they can't perform any other actions, apart from dropping things).

It's a reasonable assumption that wolves are faster than dwarves.

Not sure about leaving the dungeon. Would ensure that the orcs have time to prepare and set up their own traps.

Let's try the convincing plan first?
Jul 13, 2023 7:28 pm
I'm fine with the convincing plan. So far, Gromli's attempt to endear himself to Ulfe has only confused the ogre. I assume the other orcs were his "subjects" too, so it's probably best not to mention them.
Jul 13, 2023 7:36 pm
Right now I'm missing the last magic-user I played, who spoke Ogre and had a decent Charisma!

I'll go along with whatever plan you settle on. Probably best to keep the two remaining dwarves outside of the room, to avoid spooking the monster!
Jul 13, 2023 7:40 pm
What if someone tells Ulfe the party is here to find him so he can lead us down through the mountain?

Dalo's 10 Charisma is actually the highest in the party! Not exactly diplomats, these dwarves...

With the PCs' Charisma scores all being pretty similar, it doesn't really matter who does the talking. If you've got an idea, don't be shy about speaking up.

My procedure for this is:
Make an attack roll against the Stirge's AC (to get a good grip).
On a success, deal 1 point of damage, plus any Strength bonus.

For a weapon attack: make an attack roll against the Stirge. If you miss, make a second attack roll against Sen Malor's AC. Deal damage as normal.

FYI: I'll be on vacation for the next two weeks. I should have service, but it can be spotty where I'll be. If I do, I will check in once a day or so. If I'm unable to get online and I go dark for a few days, feel free to pilot Sen!

DungeonCat has become inactive and cowleyc is taking a hiatus from the site.

I'm happy to continue with the active players.

Gyrmmal (fighter) and Dalomdûmir (rune-smith) can be used as henchmen under the control of a player, or held in reserve as back-up characters if one of the PCs dies.

If you'd like to take control of one of them let me know.
Aug 30, 2023 12:54 pm
I'm sorry to hear that a couple of people have left. This was a fun little adventure. I am back in town and ready to continue playing if everyone else is into it!
Aug 31, 2023 11:28 pm
Will be away until Sept 6. Don't mind using them as henchmen.

Definitely interested in continuing!

Feel like we def need a rune-smith.
Sep 2, 2023 5:05 am
With our luck in die rolling in combat, the party can use all the the help we can get. I volunteer to use either character as a henchman.
Sep 4, 2023 1:28 pm
If you want to use Dalomdûmir (rune-smith) or Gyrmmal Ironhelm (fighter) as a henchman, post here to let us know which one you're taking over.

Then use this link to create a character sheet with the appropriate name (leave everything else blank) and I'll copy the sheet contents across into it. Then you will have an up-to-date sheet and be able to post as the character.
