The Ministry of Brother Timothy

Aug 13, 2023 10:50 pm
Haunted by the cries of the starving and the sight of the afflicted, Brother Timothy sought guidance in the quiet depths of his chapel. In a moment of fervent prayer, he felt a profound shift in his purpose. He interpreted this as a divine directive to take his compassion beyond the confines of his monastery. The world outside was plagued by strife, disease, and darkness, and he sensed that his determination and his unwavering faith could serve as a beacon of hope.
OOC:
@SpiritualSock511 Brother Timothy's story starts here. I will bring you in with the group after a short solo session
Brother Timothy left his monastery heading north and west, away from the central region of human lands and the Divine Nations. He has long known that though the gods my care for the least of their followers their priest often suffer the all to human fallings of pride, sloth, apathy, greed, or for those truly caring like him exhaustion. The Nations and their churches do much good in the central regions with the larger churches and greater clergy numbers. However the fronters are often left with all too few to give solace and aid to those in need. The monastery had been founded by the abbot in a remote frontier region shortly after the Shattering at the end of the Dawn War. but the frontier moved on and now Brother Timothy journeys to help those most in need.

His journey lead him from the Divine nations borders and into the Freeholds where few clergy and fewer temples can be found. The people of these land blame the war and Shattering on the gods and have turned to the arcane arts to replace them. Though the region has learned to make due without divine healing, using bards, alchemical potions, or herbal remedies instead, there still are those unable to pay the price many demand for such services.

And so Brother Timothy makes his way from each outlying village, collecting ingredients along the way to help care for those in need taking only what the people can afford. Be it a bed for the night, a good meal, or an afternoon helping to find and collect his herbs. The day is warm and Brother timothy is further west than he ever has been before. The last village warned him to wait for a traveling merchant but news of a fever outbreak in the next village was too much to ignore.

On hind sight, perhaps the merchant would have been the correct choice as six small, filthy, and rather feral looking goblins just stepped out of the scrub brush to the side of the road and move to surround the aged friar.
OOC:
Quick background info : during the Dawn Age, before the war and Shattering which happened 50 years ago, there was only a single race the People who all spoke the same language. The war and Shattering divided the people and confused the survivors, similar to the tower of babel, except all languages share traces of their origin so that communication is still possible between the races, if they try.
Goblins are one of the warborn races, and though they are intelligent they were created to breed quickly as scouts and foragers. Now they are a considered a nuisance by many and a plague like locusts by others due to their rather loos interpretation of property and territory.

OOC:
Is Brother Timothy aware of the level of danger he's facing? Can he assess whether he's capable of holding his own, or does he believe he's likely overwhelmed?
Aug 14, 2023 1:51 pm
Goblins are typically smaller and weaker. Defeating one, two, or even three is be possible but 6 seems a risky proposition. While they have a bad reputation they are not known to be homicidal. In all likelihood they are simply bandits and will rob and possibly beat him.
Friars have a good reputation that has protected Brother Timothy before but he is uncertain of these goblins will even be aware of what a friar is...
Aug 15, 2023 5:39 pm
Brother Timothy's expression remains calm and composed, his eyes reflecting his unwavering faith even in the face of danger. He doesn't show fear or aggression, instead choosing a diplomatic approach to defuse the situation.

Raising his hands slightly "Greetings, creatures of the wilderness. I mean no harm, nor do I seek conflict. I am Brother Timothy, a humble friar on a journey to aid those in need. I carry no wealth or material possessions that would be of interest to you. At best you will get a couple bruises and be no richer."

He then backs up slowly hoping to get his back to a tree or something to prevent himself from being completely surrounded. He readies his Warhammer to be ready to swing at anything that comes near.

A couple of the goblins seem put off the Brother Timothy's calm reaction. One of the snarls and gestures his short sword in a menacing manor. However another, a bit neater and with obviously better gear snaps a guttural curse at the first and he looks you over.
What is a "Friar"? You aid those in need you say? If you can help us then we can escort you to the next village. This area is not safe. Bandit are know to cause problems at times.
The goblins slight accent and the odd way he looks you over makes it hard for you to tell if he is being mocking, sarcastic, or serious. But at another command the other goblins lower their weapons and half keep an eye on you while the others watch the road in both directions as well as the woods to either side.

While he can't fully decipher the goblins' intentions, Brother Timothy focuses on their words and actions, seeing an opportunity to potentially make a positive impact. He takes their willingness to engage in a dialogue, combined with his own sincere desire to help, as a guide for his actions. Recognizing the potential danger in the area and their offer of protection, he acknowledges their gestures with respect.

"I appreciate your concern for my safety, and I am grateful for the offer of your escort. My purpose is to bring aid to those in need, regardless of their origins. If there is a way I can assist you, I would be more than willing."

With his words spoken in earnest, Brother Timothy agrees to follow them wherever they lead, placing his trust in the unfolding situation.

The leader snaps a few commands to the other goblins and half move back into the trees to the north-west. You think he said something about "scouting" and "home" (Roll a test, 2d6, if you want to figure out more) Turning back to you he looks you over before asking What aid do to give. My people have a, . . . Problem we are having difficulty with. If you can help us we'll will be very grateful. If not then We will take you to the nearest village after you visit out camp. Come he says and gestures for you to follow one of the two who remained and is heading into the woods where the other disappeared moments ago.

Brother Timothy's expression turns thoughtful as he senses the goblin's hesitation when mentioning their "problem." He remains attentive, his empathetic gaze focused on the goblin leader.

"I appreciate your honesty" Brother Timothy says in a measured tone, his voice tinged with concern. "I understand that some issues can be challenging to discuss openly. Please know that I am here to offer support, no matter the nature of the problem, we are all bound by our shared existence."

He waits for the goblin's response, giving space for them to share at their own pace while still conveying his commitment to aiding in any way he can.

The goblin leader goes on to explain how the goblins, since the Dawn War, have had a hard life. Despised and feared by most civilized people and oppressed and used by bugbears and hobgoblins, as well as others. He does admit that many goblins have really taken their war time role of scavengers a bit too enthusiastically. Most are lazy and have a nasty vicious steaks made only worse by their breading rate putting pressure on resources.
We tried to create a goblin nation a couple times i have heard of but either we get wiped out by fearful neighbors or subjugated and used in someone else's war. Right now our problem is a local Hag. She says we tresspasses and so cursed us. She refuses to talk with us now and the curse is making most of the tribe sick. Or at least those strong enough to work or hunt. The young and very old are fine. We were out hunting when this all happened. Our old tribal shaman came to us and told us to go find help from outside while he tried to hold off the cursed sickness and save our people.

The goblins seems to be telling the truth but you get the sense he isn't saying everything to do with the situation.
OOC:
FYI, not sure if I told you this or not yet, all rolls outside of combat, time critical situations, or low risk, I automatically assume you are "Focusing" which means any roll of a 4,5,6 is a pass for the test. So your roll of 4 let me determine how honest and forthright he is being. FYI if you rolled 2,3 I may have had the exact same reply but you would not know how much to trust the results. Basically if you pass a test you know or are confident of the results. Rolls of 6 can get you additional information or better results.

Brother Timothy's expression softens as he listens to the goblin leader's words, his eyes reflecting a genuine sense of compassion. He remains silent for a moment, absorbing the information. When he speaks, his voice is gentle yet determined:

"I hear the pain in your words, and I'm truly sorry for the hardships your people have endured. It's clear that your tribe has faced challenges beyond measure, and your desire for a better life is a testament to your resilience."

He takes a moment to reflect before continuing:

"As for the issue with the Hag's curse, I'm willing to offer my assistance in any way I can. A curse that affects your tribe's well-being must be a heavy burden to bear. While I cannot promise immediate solutions, I am dedicated to aiding you in finding a path towards healing. Please, lead the way to your camp, and let us work together to understand the full scope of the situation."

Daasz
The goblin leader, who you learn is called Daasz, is excited at your willingness to help and quickens the pace. The route you take is a bit convoluted and Daasz explains the scouts and leaving markers to help you avoid any trouble by avoiding any dangers. You make your way through the woods the rest of the day and make camp late at night. Weary you lay down and are soon asleep.

You wake on the morrow and Daasz tells you over breakfast that if you can match that pace the rest of the day you should be near enough to the goblin camp to meet with the shaman. Daasz has sent one of the scout ahead to tell the shaman of your offer of help. Though not a true forrester you are no stranger to hard work and manage to keep the pace the goblins set, with their encouragement and help. The other goblins seem less on edge and you note that the goblin who gave you trouble is the one Daasz sent on ahead.

However you keep having the oddest sence of being watched. A couple of times during the day you think you hear the sounds of small bells jingling nearby or see a brief flash of a brightly colored clothed figure. However each time you ask the goblins about this they look at each other with odd expressions and tell you not to worry.

With only short breaks to eat and drink you are exhausted by sunset and and stumbling slightly by time Daasz stops you with a hand on your arm. an old voice sounds from the darkness and then a figure steps out of the shadows. Daasz and the other goblin you traveled with all back away and melt into the darkness of dusk.

Krunzsk
Bowing the goblin elder greets you Welcome Brother Timothy. My name is Krunzsk. I am grateful for your willingness to aid us. I assume Saasz has explained a bit of our troubled to you. Come let us sit and talk. Ask me any questions you wish and please tell me what you can do to help.

Krunsk guides you to a nearby cave where a small fire and comfortable mats are laid out and you and indicated to take a seat. Food and drink is also provided by other goblins, all quite old looking.
Aug 27, 2023 1:44 pm
Brother Timothy takes a seat, his gaze moving across the surroundings before settling on Elder Krunzsk.

Thank you for receiving me, Elder Krunzsk. It is a privilege to be here, offering my assistance to your tribe. Daasz has indeed conveyed the challenges your people are facing, and I am committed to providing aid in any way I can. You mentioned the Hag's involvement and her claim of trespassing. Could you please share more about the encounters your tribe had with her? Understanding the nature of these interactions might help us better comprehend the source of the curse and its effects on your tribe.

Krunzsk
The source of this curse is believed to be a fey hag named Elowen who resides in the nearby Enchanted swamp. We are new to this region and do not know why she is angry. Every time we try to enter her swamp her magics drive us off or try to kill us. We are hoping you can at least talk with her. We have talked with a few other fey who claim she is old and stubborn but not malicious. Likely it is a misunderstanding. The fey have suggested trying to appease her with gifts or simply leaving but this is the only place we have found without other groups of people trying to hunt us or control us. Anything you can do to either remove the curse or find out what we can do to at least talk with her is all we ask.
Aug 28, 2023 6:30 pm
It's clear that the situation is complex, and the idea of a misunderstanding does seem plausible, especially given the insights from other fey who have encountered her. I am not versed in the intricacies of fey interactions, but I am more than willing to attempt a dialogue with Elowen. Are you or anyone in the tribe familiar with Fey customs, or perhaps is there a scout who could share their experiences in the swamp about any specific actions that triggered her magics?

Brother Timothy would then wait for a response, ready to gather any additional information. If no more information is available, he would signal to the elder his readiness to proceed with the attempt to speak with Elowen.

As you walk in the gloom of night, guided by moonlight Daasz tells you a bit about the region Careful one we enter the swamp. Besides the normal creatures to be found in such a place there is a high concentration of minor spirits, including fey and elemental as well as a few monstrosities. There are a few paths but they seem to change as you move through the swamp. Though and on one of the paths can always be found

You soon enter the swamp using one of the meandering paths. As your walk you feel strange spirits all about. Most are tiny and weak but a few are stronger but seem disinterested in you. But as you go deeper in search of the hags Hut you feel something drawing closer
OOC:
FYI these 'feelings' you get on the spirits are from your Divine Sense passively detecting them. If the spirits tried to hide your world need to actively search to detect them
