Chapter 2: Dig Four Plots

Sep 8, 2023 6:46 pm
With the Rosentry address, you begin your journey. The trip itself is uneventful and you find a lovely place to rest for the evening before you make the final leg of the journey.

The town of Rosentry is little more than a glorified vacation town—pandering to the many nobles who keep seasonal homes away from home in the area is the settlement’s primary industry. The numerous estates that make up the town’s forest-facing borders all have large rolling lawns separating one another but are still close enough that an easy trip on horseback or by carriage can allow neighbors to visit. The Meliosa estate is a relatively average example of Rosentry’s estates, and there’s very little that bothes you as you make your way toward
the indicated address.
Every insect has been poisoned with a vengeance; every mole and vole that might ruin the perfect lawns has been massacred. Few of the plants in the area are native species, and the only sign of natural life comes from the few stray songbirds who visit the local birdbaths or the distant sight of a horse in tack porting a cart of supplies for one of the local residences.

As you draw near to the Meliosa Estate, though, the sounds of her gala in the expansive garden in her manor’s backyard become impossible to ignore.

Lady Constance Meliosa’s garden and manor is surrounded by a 5-foot-tall cast iron fence, surrounded by a thick privet hedge. You can easily hear the chattering of humans enjoying a tea party on the other side, but without a means to see over the hedge, you have no line of sight into the garden.

OOC:
LOL! YES! *leaves through the adventure, to figure out a DC...*
Lets say DC15 strength, if you succeed you will all have a +2 to your Athletics/Acrobatics checks to squeeze through the fence
Sep 9, 2023 8:48 pm
OOC:
haha awesome!

Rolls

Strength - (1d20+4)

(7) + 4 = 11

"Twinsprout, be a dear and scout ahead. Let us know what’s on the other side of the hedge. Flee if your close to big humans" Bottlespeaker says as the tiny Leshy slips past the bars.
Sep 10, 2023 6:21 pm
Twinsprout leaps through the bars, and return moments later. It explains that 5, no 6 luxuriously dressed ladies, and two fabulously dressed gentlemen. The guests are enjoying a tea party with two tiny kidnapped leshys serving as centerpieces for the tables, each pair trapped within decorative glass bell jar displays and unable escape on their own.
Sep 10, 2023 6:59 pm
Reaching Rings thinks for a moment befor they speak, "We could wait until the gathering is over and try to sneak them out, although I don't like the idea of leaving them trapped any longer than necessary.
Sep 10, 2023 8:59 pm
Briarthorn had wrapped his branches around the bars and was attempting to tug them apart, but while they budged, they did not move near enough to let the group through. In the end his released the bars, cursed under his breath, and then looked to the other.

"I agree Reaching Rings, who knows for what purpose this human has them, probably some sort of caged oddity for her guests to look at but, well, do Human's eat lavender?"
Sep 11, 2023 7:50 am
"The injustice of it!" Popcorn declares. "We cannot allow them to suffer for the humans' amusement! I say we crash this party!" She shakes her flail for emphasis.
Sep 11, 2023 11:46 am
"I agree Popcorn, they are not some decoration or food, help me with these gate bars and maybe together we can pry them apart and get in" Briarthorn once again began tugging at the bars trying to separate them.
OOC:
If Popcorn agree's then I will use the Aid action and they can make the strength roll to bend the bars.

"Rarr!" Popcorn roars as she grabs the bars and flexes!
OOC:
Assuming I am trained in Strength checks. Add 2 to the roll if I can use Athletics instead of just Strength.

Rolls

Strength - (d20+7)

(7) + 7 = 14

Seeing Popcorn flexing and struggling, Bottlespeaker calls on the way of the green to guide the angry Leshy

While the trio work together to breath the fence, Reaching Rings will find the entrance to see if they can attempt to get in that way.
Sep 12, 2023 5:05 pm
Reaching Rings the rouge examines the locked iron gate. Locked can be picked. One could squice between the ironbars. They could also climb the walls... He challenges himself to find even more avenues of entry. If a lock can be picked, or the door can't be forced open, one could cause a commotion that would make the host open the door. The trick would be to get inside then.
Then there is all the magic shenanigans that could cause one to slip through hedges without trace, becoming small and go through the bars... There is properly more, but Rings is not a spellcaster
Sep 14, 2023 9:35 pm
OOC:
I'll wait to see how the gate bending goes before I attempt to lockpick. I'd rather not walk through the front door.

OOC:
The bar bending failed. I sat the DC to 15, but the roll was 11
Sep 15, 2023 11:07 am
OOC:
I attempted it after the initial attempt and got a 15 with guidance.
Sep 15, 2023 2:11 pm
OOC:
sorry, i wasnt sure if this system allowed multiple PCs to attempt the same thing.
Reaching Rings attempt to disable the lock on the gate. They grab their tools and go to work.

Rolls

Thievery - (1d20+9)

(2) + 9 = 11

Sep 15, 2023 7:36 pm
OOC:
This was to be an entrance challenge, not a game-stopper. As a GM I have never allowed a character to make a second check to overcome an obstacle. So the gate bars were not bent.
BUT, you all squished through the bars and the story moves on
Lady Constance
You make your way into the garden. Twinsprout's account is true. 6 luxuriously dressed ladies, and 2 fabulously dressed gentlemen are having a tea party with two tiny kidnapped lesheys as centrepiece decoration at each table. They are trapped under a glass bell and cant escape on their own.
The Lady Constance is clearly the hostess and she is basking the the attention she is getting from her guests.
Sep 18, 2023 4:16 pm
OOC:
Good to know on skill checks, going forward then it sounds like we need to state intent and then wait to roll until all people have chipped in to do things like Aid, guide, etc

Are we currently hidden from the guests line of sight? Can we make out any guards from our current vantage point?
Sep 18, 2023 6:51 pm
OOC:
Oh crap I messed up. I thought that Briarthorn tried to roll his bend-bar-check twice, but it was popcorn the second time. Sorry, my bad!
You are in the garden. While not totally stealthy, the guests are far more occupied by their tea party than some moving bushes. Guests are sitting in their chairs and G4 and I6 tables have the two leshies

Sep 20, 2023 9:23 pm
"Such despoilers, how dare they imprison our friends" Bottlespeaker angrily whispers. "I say we rush them and teach them to respect those of plant form"
Sep 20, 2023 9:30 pm
"I fear that may continue a cycle of revenge with these humans. Maybe we should just grab the Lavenders and go, making sure we aren't followed"
Sep 21, 2023 7:53 am
"Grab and go. I like this plan!" Popcorn says, readying her flail once more.
Sep 21, 2023 8:28 am
OOC:
Once you commit to your attack-plan, roll initiative
Sep 21, 2023 11:33 am
"Shouldn't we give them a bit of a lecture on how plants are friends and not arrangements?" Briarthorn said, but readied himself to grab and go like the others were committing to.
Sep 21, 2023 3:18 pm
"I suppose we can lecture as we move. I just dont want to linger her longer than needed." Reaching Rings was worried that the Lady may be keeping something more dangerous around.
OOC:
so the plan is to snash and grab, leave, and then regroup?

"I have some tricks to make us more dangerous too" Bottlespeaker pauses in reflection. "perhaps a distraction is order? These folks look like they would scoff at a little mud"
OOC:

@runekyndig are their any patch of mud or open dirt around?

Also, before we start ill use Fleet Step and Enlarge on someone(s)

Sep 22, 2023 3:51 am
OOC:
This is a finely kept garden with imported plants. None of the bushes you are hiding in are local. There are dirt, but no mud
Sep 23, 2023 7:14 am
OOC:
Oh, by the way, just to put a little bit of time pressure on. You will be discovered on Wednesday the 27th if you haven't come up with a plan of action by then :D
Sep 23, 2023 9:43 pm
"Alright, I have a plan. Twinsprout you go get some dirt and throw it at the nearest fancy human, then run back to me" Bottlespeaker whispers as he grips mistletoe and an old scroll "When she gets close I'll give Popcorn a burst of speed and make a giant Briarthorn. Then we rush the to get the leshy's and retreat. Anyone have other tricks to add?"
Sep 23, 2023 10:13 pm
"Ive nothing to add, other than that I will remain watchful and try to meet any resistance. Which of you will grab the Lavendars?" Reaching Rings ask
OOC:
is it safe to roll initiative?
Sep 25, 2023 11:56 am
"I'll distract the humans while Briarthorn grabs the lavenders. Let's do this!" Popcorn says.

Rolls

Initiative - (d20+8)

(12) + 8 = 20

Reaching Rings draws both his swords, hoping they won't be needed here

Twinsprout lobs dirt at one of the party guests, who all startles and skampers behind tables.
Lady Constance
Lady Constance on the other stands in indication. How dare you?! This is a closed party. Lady Constance calls over her shoulder. See them OUT!

4 Leshies steps out of the bushes and they don't look friendly. They also look odd, and a bit creepy to your eyes.

You have the initiative. You now know that you are up against
Sep 28, 2023 8:50 am
OOC:

What do you want to do? Multi Public

Fight the leshies guards and teach this Lady a lesson about kidnapping
Grab your kidnapped leshies and escape
Play out our choice
End the game and I'll narrate your choice

This is the final encounter in this adventure. This choice is about how you what to end this adventure, and I feel that the momentum have tapered off.
The Lady is the BigBadGuy/Girl where Darus was her contractor to kidnap leshies for her garden party.
She clearly have some ability to create leshies, but they are not as good as the real thing
Sep 28, 2023 4:18 pm
OOC:
oh, I was wondering if these leshies were hypnotized or otherwise being controlled. I suppose if our characters know that these creepy sunflowers can't be save, run for it.

you know what lehsy are magically created creatures. These are created by lady Constance. They can't be saved without lengthy therapy
Sep 29, 2023 5:04 am

ah, too bad there wasnt a leshy psychiatrist in the pregens.
Looks like we are making a run for it?

You scamper around and cause chaos among the human guests. While leading the guard leahies on a merry chase one of you jumps on a table and pushes the glassbell over, which has a kidnapped leshy. You repeat with the other kidnapped leshy.

Lady Constance is furious, and once Bottlespeaker can feel how she channels necromagic energy, but never relaeses it with her guests looking to her for protection and guidance.

The kidnapped leshies go through the fence first, and then one by one you follow while the leshi guards are pressing you out, defending the garden and its guests.

All this, the garden party, imported plants, the kidnapping, the nasty henchman Darius, and not casting magic seem to be a ploy to gain status. Lady Constance will most likely spin this dreadful day in her favour.
It doen't matter. You and the young leshies are going home.

The end
OOC:
Thank you for playing. I would love to hear any feedback. I really appreciated that you introduced rule suggestions like using deception or stealth for initiative.
I would particularly like to know if there was something I did or did not do, that caused the gameflow to halter here at the end. I know that I messed up the bend-bars thing, and that is why I moved us forward.
Anything else?

I'm still learning the system (only played in one other adventure), but I think this was great! I'll probably download this one, and it looks like there's a sequel, and run it for my friends
Not sure theres anything you, or anyone, can do to keep game interest or posting rates up. (But if you do find the secret, let me know!) That sort of stuff seems to ebb amd flow naturally.

Thanks for running the game. As crazybirdman said, I don't think there was anything in particular that caused the flow to taper off at the end. What I tend to do when I run Pathfinder games though is to roll initiative for all of the PCs and NPCs all at once, then tell everybody what the turn order will be. It helps to keep things moving when combat begins. :)

@Dmbrainiac I totally agree with you, that there is no need to call for rolls that the GM can do as well, as long as the player has no influence on that roll. If you were jumped by goblins, I would roll for all. But here you had to make a decision of how to approach the garden party and the trapped leshies. That is here polls really come in handy :)
