nezz - no way I'm dropping 9 points of luck here, but it brought to mind the question, do you allow the spending of luck to reduce roll results? I believe it's listed as an optional rule.

Yes I do, I think its one of the best rules in CoC.

Hear, hear!

Off to a fantastic start with all these failed rolls! @RAAMtentacles can spent 2 points to succeed, otherwise we can wait for @KCC's famously good rolls to carry the party lol.
Oct 7, 2023 5:08 am
Remember, KCC, we actually WANT to roll low here. I suspect many crit successes in the near future for our friend.

EDIT: thought he was a magician by occupation - what IS Mr. Wilde's occupation?

You'll have to find out in character! No metagaming for you mwahaha.

I'm assuming that luck doesn't regen right? If that's correct, then I'll pass on spending them for now.

You can regain luck at the end of an adventure, but yes for a one-shot it doesn't come back.

Perhaps we mill about the foyer, and strike up conversation about the dreadful accident that transpired? As good a way for strangers to meet as any!
Oct 9, 2023 12:31 pm
With all of the confusion it is also possible to snoop around backstage as long as you're not too obvious about it! Splitting the party is fine and dandy in CoC!

Really enjoying how creepily you're playing Charles, @KCC!

For Barrington I was like, as a player, I want to try and get info from the patient, but as the medical professional here Barrington wouldn't dream of doing that. So I'm glad Charles's ethics are different from Barringtons...

Haha! Glad to hear it! I’m not really sure who Charles is just yet! It’s a work in progress. I did think to play the kindly old man, but maybe it’s not going to go that way!

I'm doing work travel (from Europe to USA) all week - hope I have time to post, but might be slow or silent. Although hope I can at least post a sentence or two as needed. Just wanted to give a heads up.
Oct 30, 2023 10:48 am
Thanks, heads ups are always appreciated!
Nov 3, 2023 12:08 am
Hey everyone - I'm f4eling unwell and can't concentrate on the posts here atm. Happy for you to deal with Barington anyway you like - act for him, sideline him, whatever works best for you. Sorry. Hope to be back again soon.
Nov 3, 2023 1:54 am
Thanks for the heads up, hope you feel better soon. I'm also extremely busy today and tomorrow so probably won't be able to update until Sunday. I'll push the game along to the next day then.

Thanks @nezzeraj

Had/have Covid (that was fun on a transatlantic work trip #FeelingSorryForMyself heh) - symptoms improving though, so going to check out The Story So Far and see if I've got brain space to make a post.
Nov 28, 2023 7:35 pm
With the party split like this, would you recommend, or prefer, that we only read the content in the location we are in ourselves? Or better that we keep an eye on both of them?
Nov 29, 2023 6:51 am
If you can keep from metagaming I don't mind if you read the other thread!
Dec 5, 2023 8:37 pm
If we prefer to have action continuing for all of us, works for me to have time passage a bit flexible here, with Yuna, Idella, and John arriving just as Wilde and Van Ness are at their current point in the conversation - I mean, we've looked around the grounds a bit, things like that, so that would have taken a bit of time.
Dec 6, 2023 12:45 am
Yeah we are still early in the adventure so I'm trying to push things a long a little bit faster lol.
Dec 6, 2023 5:29 am
When it's better for you that I shift to posting more action, less chat, can for sure do that. Just let me know. Want this to work for you, be good for you too (I'm LOVING playing with y'all).
Dec 6, 2023 7:24 am
As any screenwriter can tell you, it is best to combine action and dialogue! You can have your chat while also searching the house you are supposed to inspect for clues lol.

That’s a good way to have details overlooked! Clues in funny colors and bolded, maybe?
Dec 16, 2023 6:31 pm
I'm on a full-on work trip starting tomorrow (Sunday 17) until end of the week (Friday 22). I hope I can still post, but please don't wait for me.

How nice of my co-players to take the hits for old Charles! Yuna will surely have her sanity rattled by the diary, and the safe is surely rigged to explode.

Charles… an ally?
Jan 12, 2024 2:51 pm
I like how both you and Charles clearly know WAY more about the Cthulhu mythos and CoC than Barrington or I..!

I don't think Barrington (or I!) are particularly focused on sanity or the kinds of things that might be dangerous in this world, so the naive it-sounds-like-very-risky things Barrington is doing require no acting on my part for their naievity heh.
Jan 13, 2024 6:32 am
How devilish haha Yuna certainly wouldn't expect to be so affected by reading a book! How preposterous!
Jan 14, 2024 11:50 am
On a work trip, away from today and back on Saturday. May be very slow to post during this time. Just wanted to give y'all a heads up.
Jan 14, 2024 12:23 pm
Thanks for letting us know. Have a fun trip!

Talk me through the particulars of this book then. Charles has to spend a full 24 hours with it, in the hopes of being able to read it? Or peruse it for a few hours?
Jan 24, 2024 7:33 am
It will take several hours of reading to understand the one spell. It's not hard to understand, just takes time to piece it together. You could use it by the next day if you spend the night or some of today and some of tomorrow reading it.
Jan 28, 2024 10:25 am
I leave for a week of work travel today, will make me slower to reply. Wanted to give you a heads up on that.
Jan 28, 2024 11:57 am
Thanks for the heads up!

So, the d4 I rolled @BeardHare is simply the amount of sanity I lost! I assume that I automatically cast the spell having spent the magic and also the sanity!

Ah gotcha! Thanks for the explanation :)

Hope someone has got a gun! These things usually end well…
Feb 19, 2024 11:52 am
Watching Barrington fail again and again... I'm surprised how sad I feel watching him slide into what feels like inevitable doom! Some strong hopeless horror vibes here!
Feb 19, 2024 12:13 pm
Lol that's what CoC is all about!
Feb 19, 2024 2:04 pm
Yep, and if the GM in CoC gives you a room full of guns, it's because they wont help :P
Mar 6, 2024 1:49 pm
Well it was a bumpy roller coaster of a ride but we finished! Lol thanks for everyone who stuck around until the end. Feel free to ask any questions here, and don't forget to post what happens to your character after the adventure ends!
Mar 6, 2024 6:54 pm
Thank you so much GM and all the other players!! A great first ever CoC game for me :) :)

I do have... questions...

What was in/what were those balls?

Where did Memphis go?

What did the spell do that Charles read out?

What are some of the clues did we missed out on?

(I could write more questions but those are the first that I have :) )
Mar 6, 2024 11:20 pm
The balls were magical and could have affected some magical effects from the house. Memphis was trapped in the house in another dimension. The spell Charles read pulled Memphis body from the other dimension back to the physical dimension. The clues you missed out on were the backstory stuff about Memphis and Harold and the motivations of them.
Mar 7, 2024 1:12 am
Oh wow, over already!? Yeah, that was a lot of fun, thank you nezz for running it!
Mar 7, 2024 11:59 am
Lol yeah. There was a lot more but nobody wanted to go to the restaurant and meet all the other NPCs lol. Also we lost one player early on and that is always a rough time in a one shot so I sped things up slightly. Hope it was still entertaining haha.
Mar 7, 2024 1:14 pm
Enjoyed it. Thank you for the efforts :)
