The Heart defies explanation, but that doesn’t stop some people from trying. In Ghorryn, a loose cabal of rumour-mongers, black market necromancers, information junkies and disgraced academics are attempting to unravel the mystery that is the City Beneath – and they’re making a big show of it.
Everyone in Ghorryn has their own complex theory as to what the Heart is, but also several adjacent theories concerning life, death, sanity, time, space and – most popular of all – the real purpose of Ghorryn. Why on earth would so many conspiracy theorists gather in one place if there wasn’t something suspicious going on?
It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy, of course. As more truth-seekers arrive, the settlement schisms into more and more factions, and everyone is looking to be the one who finally figures out the actual function of the Heart. For the time being, they make do with selling fragments of the information that they’ve harvested to interested parties, and warily exchange snippets of theories in an attempt to break new ground while not giving away anything truly valuable.
Ghorryn
The whole place is a paradoxical juxtaposition of sprawling underground chaos and methodical order. Entering the settlement is akin to stepping into a vast subterranean amphitheater. The walls stretch high and wide, forming a dome-like ceiling, lit from hundreds of lamps and lanterns below.
The stone streets weave and interchange both vertically and horizontally. One would almost say there is a pattern in the chaos, close, yet just a breath away from being grasped. Below are places of interest in Ghorryn.
Places of Interest
In a repurposed Vermissian vent on the very edge of Ghorryn lies the home of Hislop, a medical researcher who could also do surgery... Probably.
Entry to Hislop's place
Somehow the pub get much, much bigger once you enter the place. Each table has its own room to allow for maximum discretion, and getting to the correct place always requires help of a staff member.
Never have you seen the same staff member twice. There are no toilets.
Ballart is an expert in all things extraplanar. He claims to be able to access any dimension out there - from the demonic ones, through Fractures to the fabled Sigmar's lands.
All of that is theoretical of course, as putting the thing in practice may end up in unforeseen circumstances.
He lives on top of one of the walkways, overseeing the streets below.
Hall of Forgotten Rites is dedicated to a single purpose - finding out whether there is a connection between the Heart and the Divine. To do this, all the world's religions need to be cataloged, dissected, analyzed and then synthesized back again.
Such a gargantuan research task requires cooperation, thus the Hall is run by a number of researchers - sometimes former priests, other times staunch atheists, who spend most of their time bickering between each other. Many of these people have bounties on their lives, placed by heads of various churches in Heart on the charge of blasphemy.
There is price for knowledge - and many are willing to sacrifice anything in return for secret wisdom. Because of this, the Incarnadines managed to set up a small temple here - tucked away in a secluded corner of Ghorryn's labyrinthine streets.
Baldary: a human, doubtlessly hundreds of years old, who’s extended his life with a series of magical, technological and surgical techniques. He has a finger in every pie in Ghorryn, and his wealth of information and influence is a matter of pride. It’s hard to get an audience with him, but worth the wait and the expense, as he can shed light on almost any matter you care to mention.
Rumors say he’s on the cusp of uncovering the greatest conspiracy of all. Everything points to Ghorryn being built for a purpose, rather than simply happening ad hoc, and everyone inside is a pawn in some greater scheme. If he can gather and sift enough raw information, he can finally figure out what’s really going on here.
Also since this is a new chapter, new story beats can be selected.
