5. The Wood of Sharp Teeth

Oct 25, 2023 12:09 am
The sun has reached its highest point in the sky when the party arrives at their point of entry into the Wood of Sharp Teeth. Up until now the party has largely skirted around the Wood, or taken the maintained roads that cut through it. To find their bandit prey and rescue Aldous, however, they must press deeper.

The companions find a secure place a few dozen feet within the treeline to tie their horses, and then proceed on foot.

The section of the Wood in which the party expects to find the bandit camp is an expanse known as Peldvale, more than twenty square miles of tangled vegetation. It isn't an ancient, magical forest like those in the stories. There aren't many huge, gnarled trees that hint at a bygone age. But what trees there are, are many.

It will take some skilled woodsmanship to make good progress through this forest, as well as to find traces of the bandits that inhabit it.
OOC:
Time for Survival! We'll have one person make the check, with advantage from the rest helping. Guidance, Bardic Inspiration, buffs etc. are welcome!

As the group moves deeper into the forest, Runeson finds the surroundings... familiar. He doesn't remember traveling the Wood, but he finds something pressing on his mind, something like a fleeting dream, or movement at the corner of his eye. A sort of subtle mental itch, calling for attention but impossible to scratch for relief. If he focuses on the sensation, he feels a headache begin to build. But he discovers that by keeping his focus on the quiet rhythm of Aiwe's drums, his subconscious takes over and he knows where to go with a sort of confident intuition.

Around this dead oak tree, past that fallen log, up over the next rise... Runeson leads the group forward.

After several hours of hiking, before them appears a sudden drop, several dozen feet, down to a stream of clear, fresh water. And there, on the far side of the stream, are two men wearing the rough-shod attire the party has seen on other bandits. They have longbows over their shoulders, but the men don't seem to be expecting trouble here. Their heads are down, cleaning their hands and faces in the stream and filling their waterskins. They haven't yet noticed the party.

Then, having spied those two men, the group looks beyond them to see what can only be the bandit camp: perhaps twenty tents and makeshift cabins interspersed among a thin copse of trees. All the structures are topped with branches and leaves; no doubt it looks like just more of the tangled Wood from above. Half a dozen wagons in various states of repair can also be seen scattered among the structures, as well as large piles of boxes, crates, and chests. More bandits sort through these piles, separating out valuables and supplies.

Being this close to the camp, the party understands that there must be sentries or patrols out and about. Their current location, about 300 feet from the edge of the camp and overlooking it from their perch above the stream, could be a useful vantage for spying on the camp, but is also risky unless measures are taken to hide the party or discourage searching the area.
OOC:
I presume this is where Stella would cast Pass Without Trace?

Dieter quickly scans the camp then drops to his knee and signals for the others to do the same.

"Stella, do you think your friend can turn into a squirrel or a sparrow and scout out the canopy?" Dieter whispers. He turns to the Flaming fists "form a parameter and watch out for scouts, do not engage unless absolutely necessary."

OOC:
Yes, Stella will cast Pass Without Trace to help keep the party hidden
"Ah, is a brown owl too conspicuous? Hm...they're normally nocturnal, aren't they? Um...yes, I can do that." She strokes Noctalia's feathers, brushing them away into stardust, then taps out a new form for her that solidifies into a typical daytime bird for the region, then sends her to scout the area per Dieter's request for positions of bandits, buildings, and other tactical or organizational details they can't tell from their position, searching for bugs for food in the trees to keep up natural appearances.
OOC:
Stella expends a use of Wild Shape to summon a sparrow familiar, which will last for 2 hours. This will, unfortunately, permanently dismiss Noctalia until Stella casts the spell again as a wizard ritual, because the feature's weird that way. Stats of a hawk.

The half-dozen Flaming Fist soldiers fan out behind the party, keeping careful watch should any bandit wander too close to the party's hiding spot.

Stella's sparrow casually flits into the bandit camp, lighting on branches here and there and having a look at the camp's layout.

It seems the camp is divided nearly in half, with the hobgoblins of the Chill on one side, and the human Blacktalons on the other. Run-of-the-mill bandits move among both sides as they do various jobs, but avoid getting too close to any of their betters.

Easy to pick out on the Blacktalon side is an imposing man in plate armor, a massive maul strapped to his back. As he walks around inspecting his side of the camp, the sparrow hears the other Blacktalons addressing him respectfully as "Taurgosz", or sometimes "Tenhammer". All the Blacktalons appear to look up to him and follow his orders without hesitation.

(History: He earned the nickname "Tenhammer" by once slaying 10 men with one swing of his hammer.)

On the Chill side, the camp is spotless of trash or refuse, and the tents are laid out with painstaking order. All of the hobgoblins wear crisp uniforms and well-maintained equipment. Their leader, Ardenor Crush, is marked by a dozen badges of rank on his cloak. He remains by a small campfire where his mercenaries know where to find him, and issues orders from there. He looks much like what one would expect of a hobgoblin military leader, but there's something in his gaze that speaks of greater wisdom and experience, as though he's already seen everything and survived it all.

All groups avoid the very middle of the camp where the largest tent is. It's easily three times the size of any of the other structures, and there are two guards stationed at its entrance.

There's no sign of prisoners; if there are any, they're out of sight within one of the tents.

Tensions in the camp are made abundantly clear when a small handful of Blacktalons, off duty and drunk, wander into the hobgoblins' side of camp yelling taunts and jeers. Just about the entire camp is drawn to watch the resulting scuffle. Ardenor Crush and Taurgosz glare at each other, daring the other to draw their weapon. The ordeal is broken up when a man of monstrous size and musculature (presumably Tazok himself) storms from the center tent. His words are loud enough for the party to hear:

"By the lower planes, do I pay you mercs to kill each other?! NO ONE KILLS IN MY CAMP BUT ME!!! The first to do so will be broth-boiled and their skin used to swaddle my small-kin!"
Oct 25, 2023 9:50 pm
The crowd quickly disperses, and Tazok fumes back to his tent in the middle of camp.

"Ohhhh very nice," Shelur murmurs. "What we need is to steal a hobgoblin or Blacktalon weapon, and then take out one of the opposite folks just meandering in the stream here, leaving body and weapon to be found by the opposite side. Then..." she mimes a fireball, her gestures creating a (quiet) roar of flames and small blast of warmth.

"We clean up and fetch our boy in the chaos."

"It won’t be enough Aiwë, Trazog or whatever his name is will keep them in line. We need to rethink our strategy, I think I can sneak into the camp like we did with the gnolls and kill the big one. I sneak back out and we watch them collapse into infighting, once the bandits are dead we clear out the remaining hobgoblins." Dieter cautions he tries to hide his fear from the others but Aiwë knows that he is spooked.

"I think either of those plans could work but I think fire as a diversion and to create confusion would be most appropriate. We can pick them off as they run to the river to collect water to try and quell the fires. Bodies would easily placed into the river and taken downstream to avoid suspicion. Ida is racking her brain for similar situations she and Tylfgyr had come into over the course of their adventuring together. It was a common occurrence to have met the wrong people or make enemies which required every tactical advantage required in taking out targets, or camps.

"Look, you saw he barely has it under control. I've seen so many tribes like this, he can barely lead because he's too busy keeping them from spilling blood. But if blood is already spilt? It's beyond drunk insults. Maybe the big guy will be scary enough to keep them from killing themselves completely but I think he'll have to do more than holler." She points at Ida.

"I like the fire! But not before we know we won't roast Aldous. Maybe we merge the two? Start with my plan and some of us sneak in while Trazog is shouting, and then set a fire to cover our exit and our assault?"
Oct 25, 2023 10:24 pm
"The hobgoblins would see through it I think. If we take out Tazok they’ll be nothing stopping them from fighting." Dieter counters probing her plan. He is still open to suggestions but Dieter is hesitant to assault the camp.

"I can put a Javelin in his heart while he sleeps and extract the boy"

Stella relays her familiar's observations.
Quote:
"What we need is to steal a hobgoblin or Blacktalon weapon, and then take out one of the opposite folks just meandering in the stream here, leaving body and weapon to be found by the opposite side.
Stella pulls out the patch of The Chill from a hobgoblin group they faced before. "We could also use this," she says, joining the brainstorming. "Or maybe we can fire an arrow from the direction of the hobgoblins and create an illusion of one that then goes and hides in the tents..."
Quote:
"I think I can sneak into the camp like we did with the gnolls and kill the big one. I sneak back out and we watch them collapse into infighting, once the bandits are dead we clear out the remaining hobgoblins."
Stella gives him a sidelong glance. "Did you not hear the part about him being called Tenhammer? He's no gnoll. You can just waltz in, kill him, and make it out alive. Aiwë's plan seems much safer."

Stella then considers Ida's plan, eyes calculating. After some much-needed sleep, Stella seemed much more alert and focused so far. "Mmmm...I think fire is a great way to create confusion. We have fire arrows, a fire staff, and I have a spell or two that could set something ablaze. Certainly not everyone would go for water, so that would be good way to divide their forces. I agree with Awie; let's combine these plans."

Dieter pauses "I do have this" he says pulling a serpentine dagger from his inner pocket "you know what it can do" Dieter says softly remembering his fight with Shar-teel

Maybe she taught me more than I would like

"I’ll go in with your cover. Stella’s friend will follow me, when I am successful it will relay the signal for the fires to cover my escape with the boy."
Oct 25, 2023 10:40 pm
"We can't even verify for certain that the boy is here dieter." Ida says thinking about what Awie said "If we go in the cover of night we can see if the boy is there, and retrieve him if thats the case. Then we could set the camp ablaze to create a diversion. We have to go about this in a smart way we cant always be so rash."
Oct 25, 2023 10:42 pm
"What makes you think the hobgoblins will figure it out?" Aiwë counters. "Besides, it doesn't have to stand up to a murder investigation. It has to make one or two guys mad enough to draw weapons and attack. The hobgoblins will respond in kind, not launch an investigation. Then it's all downhill from there."

She nods at Ida's input. "I'm with Stella and Ida. Sneak in for reconnaissance and plant our diversion, both of them, for maximum effect."

Idas look softens slightly looking at Dieter "I appreciate you want to move to action but action without thought will only lead to more pain"
Oct 25, 2023 10:54 pm
"They’re smart Aiwë. Don’t underestimate them. If they think it’s a set up they’ll be ready for us. Their leader, you don’t end up like that by accident."
